Loose skin! Do you have it or no? Is it inevitable?

I'm 36 years old, 5'11, girl, banded in April 2013, starting weight of 326.2, have lost 107 lbs in the last 13 months, still want to lose about 60 pounds. I have a pretty saggy stomach. Not a panni that hangs down, but just a bumpy stretched out stomach. I think that is mainly from being pregnant while I was overweight (14 years ago). My arms are a little bat wing-ish, but not horrible. My upper thighs are saggy, but not horrible. Plastics would probably be the icing on the cake when I'm at goal, but I'm not desperate to have anything done. You really have to wait and watch how your body reacts to the weight loss. Losing with the band is at a much more reasonable pace than with other surgeries. Your body will slowly adjust as you lose. Try not to trouble your thoughts with the "unknown". Focus on eating right and listen to your band. The rest well come in time. Good luck and hang in there!

Try and exercise as much as you can, especially weight training, I regret I didn't initially.

    STOPPING IN TO SAY HELLO

Hi Mikee...glad to see you're doing well. ..and you are because even if the weight isn't coming off as quick as you like, you're still going to the pool and doing the best you can right now. Kudos for you.
  4. My gf says I have...but I didnt really measure before to be accurate. I feel great and people tell me Iook great so I'm def. gonna keep on keeping on...my trainers said eventually the weight will start coming off again....
  5. I have been working out with a trainer for the past 7 months - 3 days a week. I only lost 20 lbs but I droped 5 sizes. There is a misconception that muscle weighs more than fat but actually a pound is a pound no matter if it is fat or muscle. The difference is muscle is leaner and therefore you are toner and smaller instead of all jiggly and fat. So you say you have only dropped less than 3 lbs but have you lost inches, dropped you percent of body fat and do you look toner? Are you sure you are eating enough protein and calories, when lifting weight I know you burn more calories and high protein diet is key to developing muscles. My two cents!
  6. Thanks everyone...I weight myself a day ago (about 6 weeks since my last weigh in) and I'm down 9.5lbs which is awesome! LOL I was just taken aback with the 3lbs after 5 hard weeks. I appreciate the insight, I am taking it to heart...I have already modified my diet and upped my Protein and Water. I will not let this plateau beat me! LOL Thanks again.
  7. <p>I have to eat 1000 calories a day to keep my weight lose steady. Some days it's pretty hard. I eat mostly dairy, eggs and tuna. I don't buy low fat cheese because if I cut all the fat out I can't reach my calorie goal. I add a little reduced fat mayo made with olive oil to my tuna to add calories. I cook my eggs in olive oil to add calories and good fat. When you're able to eat nuts, an oz. of nuts will give you calories plus protein and good fats. You can also add peanut butter to your protein shakes. Good luck
  8. Hi guys. So I'm getting really frustrated with my weight. I know stalls are completely normal, and I've dealt with a few before this one. I was 4 months post sleeve on the 11th. My weight has moved up and down the same 2lbs since the end of march. I've upped my water intake, increased exercise, and I'm hitting my protein goals and nothing is budging! I've had stalls that were like 1-2 weeks but nothing like this. And all my nutritionist says is to make sure to hit protein and water goals and I'll be fine. Apparently not [emoji36] they also don't give us a calorie range so I don't know if I'm not eating enough. I feel like I am? I'm around 800-1000 calories depending on the day. Sorry, I just needed a place to rant. It sucks putting in so much work and not seeing any changes! Especially because it had been going well before.

    2 Fills Help

No, I went to Mexico for my surgery, self pay. I wrote 10 cc on the paper, I knew what I had. But when she put in 3 cc fill, when the barium didnt go into my stomach, she decided I didnt know what I was talking about and must have misunderstood, so she took almost all the fill out, so gave me a usual fill for a 4 cc band. Im sure the fill doctor is a nice person and she only does fills on Saturdays because she knows how it is to get banded in Mexico and have trouble finding a fill doctor. She doesnt take you until after you have been banded for at least 5 weeks and then our schedules didnt match, so Im on my own until sept 27th. She was banded herself in Mexico her husband said. She does the whole thing, fluor and barium swallow, and got worried because 3 cc I was too tight for and its not too tight for most with a 10 cc band. So she decided my surgeon had said the band was 10 cm across in diameter, not a 10 cc band and took out way too much of the fill. My surgeon recommended a 2.5 cc fill for the first fill. Im just in a panic because of the cruise coming up. Will power aint going to cut it and I can eat anything, there isnt any food I cant eat because of my band so far. I was also hoping that my clothes would fit better, they still look too tight to be attractive on my cruise. Im insulin resistant so losing weight is hard enough for me. Just feeling all around frustrated tonight.

    Will I regain the weigth?

I agree with everything @@Djmohr, @@Inner Surfer Girl, and @@VSGAnn2014 have said. The only thing I would add is that WLS is a tool, it is not a magic bullet for weight loss. In the end, what it does is help you to develop good eating habits. By decreasing the size of the stomach, it helps you to reduce your portion size and forces you to eat slowly, chew thoroughly, and generally eat more healthy. But, it is only a tool, and it is totally possible to overcome the tool and sabotage your weight loss. One example is grazing, or eating small amounts constantly. By doing that, you get around the fact that your stomach is smaller, but still rack up the calories. Or drinking your calories by drinking high-calorie drinks throughout the day. Or eating high-carb or high-fat foods. These are some ways to defeat the WLS. In the end, if you have real food habit issues, you would be best to combine WLS with therapy to deal with those issues so they don't sabotage your weight loss. As far as hunger is concerned, it is different with everyone, and you won't know until after surgery how it will be. Most people have less hunger, but not everyone. Everyone seems to struggle with "head hunger" (cravings) to a greater or lesser degree.

    Will I regain the weigth?

Everyone has these doubts. Ask yourself: If I don't have the surgery will I continue to gain and/or if I lose what are the odds that I will gain it all back, plus? If I do have the surgery, what is the likelihood I may reach my goal and then gain a little bit back? Under this scenario would the surgery still be worth it to you? Also, as to which surgery to have. That is a decision you need to make with your surgeon. Learn as much as you can so you can make the most informed decision possible. From what I observed almost everyone has an opinion about what is "best", but keep in mind that we are naturally biased based on our own decision and experience. I was sleeved on April 20 of this year and couldn't be happier with my recovery and progress. And, yes, I had the same doubts as you at one time. I was just sure that I was the unique person who would fail. Now, for the first time in years, I am confident and hopeful about regaining my life. Edited: because autocorrect is insane.

    Will I regain the weigth?

Well yes you could regain weight; the surgery only helps you eat smaller portions it does not chose the food you eat. As someone who has had the sleeve and now the bypass I suggest you go with bypass, personally I believe it has better weight keeping off abilities than the sleeve. You shouldn't be hungry in fact I have a hard time consuming my calories as I really don't feel like it. With the sleeve I was never really hungry and I had it for 3 years. If you research how the surgeries are performed the bypass has rerouting that has a major effect on the stomach hunger hormone(I can't explain it would be better to read about it). Good luck in your decision.

    Will I regain the weigth?

@@Canadian lady, You are having surgery in a few weeks? Has your surgeons office given you information about both surgeries and the expectations for post op care? If not I would suggest you ask for this information so you have everything you need to do to prepare yourself for success. Having WLS requires a great amount of work on your part to be successful. The answer to your question about regain is yes, absolutely you can gain all of your weight back down the road if you do not follow the plan. It is important that you are given a plan and speak with a therapist to ensure there is a plan to deal with any current eating habits that got you here. Otherwise it is very possible to eat around your surgery. I would definately reach out to your surgeon asap and ask for their expectations post surgery. I went to a bariatric center of excellence and was given a giant binder that informed me of all the surgery options, their risks, what I could expect afterwards and a food and exercise plan. I believe most surgeons have something similiar. Best of luck on your upcoming surgery!
  14. Hi, I was banded August of 2009 and got pregnant 4 months after my band. However I have been pretty successful in my weight loss total of 65lbs of the 110lbs I want to lose. However in January I started to notice I could eat much more and really started to have a lot of reflux esp at night. After fills and unfills to try and adjust my band we did the swallow test and my band slipped down. My doctor took out all my fill and now I have to wait a few weeks and see if my band reposition itself properly. If it does not I have to decide whether or not to just remove my band or have it revised. Both require surgery again. I was just wondering if anyone out there has gone through the same thing and what was the outcome of the removal or revision. Thanks for any input.
  15. I had the gastric sleeve on June 2nd 2014, Dr. Hoyt was my surgoen at Darnell army medical and I had several complications after surgery one of which was a leak that resulted in me needing to be transferred to BAMC (in San Antonio ) and then was finally released and able to start true post op life on June 30th. I went to all my follow ups and lots of support groups meet quiet a few times everything was great (other than having 3 drs over the years and 2 surgeries to repair a umbilical hernia I had fixed during the same orginal surgery in 2014 ) I have not had a follow-up in close to 2 years or seen a nutritionist but ive maintained on the appropriate diet and stayed exercising, my start weight was 290 surgery was 273 and at my smallest was 160 (I'm 5 ' 5 1/2 ) Over past few months things have been changing, my restriction feels totally gone, I have incredible heart burn that doesn't seem to go away my food at times feels like its stacking I'm often very nauseas and I get awful stomach pains and headaches and noone can really figure it out, I feel bloated constantly Im back up too 195 regardless of me mantaining the diet and exercise and then I finally thought maybe its sleeve related? Im in the process now to figuring out how I go about getting in to another surgoen for a follow up to see if everything is okay and the hospitals nutritionist who heads the WLS program as well but its just been so long I dont even know the proper steps to take so its taking time. Is there anyone whose gone through this? Im so frustrated and defeteated and I'm at a loss as to what to do.

  17. Two weeks until my surgery! It's getting closer I am so excited. When they gave me all the information on the lap band and nutrition information I became nervous. I am so afraid I will not be able to change me eating habits!! My worst fear is I'll do this surgery and it won't work for me! I know it isn't good to think that way bc if you think you'll fail then you just might. I need a boost of confidence in myself. I have dieted before but this will be more important and a life style change. I want to prove to myself and everyone I know I can be successful losing weight!! My weight will never hold me back from being truly happy. Does anyone feel like I do? I just feel like I won't find anything to eat thats healthy enough. Obviously why I am fat is bc I'd never stick with a diet bc I would cheat or get bored or run out of foods to eat. I guess with lap band I can still have a half turkey sandwich whole wheat bread with low fat cheese no mayo. Also some fruit and low fat crackers. If I can even eat all that. That's another thing. Fills. I want to be restricted so I won't over eat! I don't wanna have to come back several times! I want it tight so it'll work from the get go!! I guess I need to relax and set my mind now before surgery day and so my body isn't shocked.

    Weigh-in

I went through the same. Initial BMI was 41. I was told don’t gain anything, but don’t lose either. It was very stressful. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield in NY. I lost a few lbs but not too much. It took forever for them to approve me but they did. That little bit of weight loss showed I was trying. It’s better than gaining!

    Weigh-in

Most insurance plans look at it from first weigh in not the last one pre-surgery. The carrier wants to see you are committed to following the plan and losing weight so they expect you to lose some. You should be fine. My BMI starting was around 48 and about 43 at surgery. Trust your doc - s/he has been at this with a bunch of insurance companies and knows the drill.

    Can my goals be achieved?

Well, you may. I can and have lost 108 pounds (49 kg) in a matter of 18 months through diet and exercise. Only to gain 128 pounds (58 kg) back in half that time. I am hoping that the Lapband will help me keep any weight that I lose off. What I was trying to say is don't wait until February and hope you lose enough. Get a headstart and make the odds better.

    Can my goals be achieved?

Hi, difficult to say if you will achieve it or not.In the beginning you tend to lose fairly quickly, then it slows down a bit and of course there are the dreaded plateaus. If you work on 1llb a week which is the low average weekly weight loss then that is just under.5kg per week. you may lose more - you may lose less. A lot will depend on how you stick to the eating recommendations, how much you exercise etc. And don't forget there is a period after banding before you reach your optimum fill level(sweet spot) when you may not lose at all because at that point you don't really have any restriction. Where in Vic are you and who is your Dr. i live in Ballarat and was banded in June by Peter Nottle.
  25. In a couple of weeks, I am going to get my first fill. It will be at the radiology department where upper GI tests are done. My Doctor explained that he will fill my band (almost full) and then they will give me barium liquid to drink. They will then take some of the fill out to a level that shows a proper amount of flow and constriction. He said that by doing it this way, you can get proper restriction on the first fill. Ultimately it is likely they will leave 3.5 -5.5 cc in the band after this fill. He said that if they don't go through radiology and do the fill in the doctor's office, they can only add a small amount. You then need to keep going back until you have a proper fill. I was very happy to learn about the approach my doctor takes to fills. I am hoping that I get decent restriction quickly so I can keep the weight I have taken off and continue with my weight loss program. I am curious as to others whose Dr. has taken this approach and how it worked for you. Did you get good restriction after the first fill?
