    I'm here to help...

Thanks Janet...I have those moments when I think my face really looks old. But then I have to remember my age. The fat filled out all the wrinkles and now I am deflated. I started my weight gain at the age of 38. Prior to that I was the weight I am now. Guess I couldn't expect to have have the same 38 yr old face reappear? Why not? Oh, why not? LOL I'm on my way out the door. Blocking out thinking of my 3 hour time in the dentists chair this morning. Just focusing on fun and relaxation at the resort I will be staying at the next couple of days. Looking forward to seeing some old friends. Just hope they look a hell of a lot older than me....I'm bad.

    NA'ers?

I am happy to see this thread has been reactivated. My name is Llyra and I have thirteen years of clean time. My banding was done on March 3 of this year and I have lost 26 pounds with approximately 60 more to go. Until I got the second fill, I was afraid I was in line to be one of the lap band failures- the weight simply was not coming off. The second fill helped immensely as has a gradual adjustment to a new way of eating. I teach belly dance, garden and maintain two horses so exercise is not as big a problem for me as for some, though I do tend to spend too much time on the couch if I am feeling low. After six years of not attending meetings, I returned to the rooms in October. The catalyst was the death of a friend in a motorcycle accident. I saw so many old faces at his funeral and realized I missed them. Didn't expect to be recognized after so many years and a 75 pound weight gain, but I was welcomed back with open arms.

why only 50% of weight will be lost

According to my surgeon, he says that "yes" you can lose all of your excess weight, but after 5 years people only maintain about 50-60% of their weight lost. I am hoping that I am one that can keep 100% off, with no weight gain.
  5. Everyone pretty much answered what I was thinking! In addition to their comment, I see you're on Seroquel. Did your dr explain to you than you can gain weight with that drug? When going over my options for a med to help me sleep, he brought up Seroquel. I siad let's try it. Then my psychiatrist adds "it'll probably put 10 more pounds on you", I said no. Has something to do with messing up your blood sugar. I've sinced learned from several docs that Seroquel causes weight gain. However, if that med is working for you, don't stop taking it because I said you'd gain weight - I'm just giving you facts about it. Google it. I hope things start going better for you, sweety! It was about 5 mths before I started losing anything also. I'm now at 8 mths - 36 lbs - it'll start for you too! Marci
  6. Please be careful with seroquel. It is known to cause weight gain.
  7. When you say you can eat more than you should be able to on what are you basing that? Are you really eating a lot or is it just that you have heard/read/been told that you should be satisfied on 1/2 cup of food or something similar? You have to be able to eat enough to keep you from getting hungry and to get good nutrition. If you serve your food on a small sized plate , eat that and are satisfied then you are doing great. Don't go getting overfilled just because you think that you should be satisfied on a miniscule amount of food. What is more likely to happen if you do this is that you will eat high calorie sliders that can cause weight gain, or you could get reflux or worse. Your loss of 5lb certainly sounds like you are in the green zone to me.

    4th of July Challenge!

I'm actually up 1.8 lbs. I've been jogging 12 miles a week for the past few weeks (after finishing the C25K program), and I've definitely put on some muscle, but the weight gain makes me crazy! Went shopping yesterday, and I've gone down two dress sizes, so I am more toned at least. But the scale needs to start going in the other direction again!! I think I might be approaching a plateau, because I've kept my calorie intake under 800 cals per day. Maybe I shoud add a couple hundred calories of protein and see what happens...
  9. My surgery was May 18, I am also experiencing weight gain of 3 pounds,,seems to go back and forth. I at one point got upset, then understanding how everything works realize, I need to lighten up and just enjoy the journey. I am also in the mushy stage, but I didn't realize we could have meat ground up. I was thinking my Doc said not to have meat until the solid food stage. What is everyone eating for mushies? Also, I am not going over the 800 calories a day..sometimes less..although, I do feel hungry, maybe it is head hunger..I don't want to push it though.
  10. hey everyone.... i'm lost.. i have no idea what to do... 3 months after my surgery.. 6/9mils fill.. and guess what.. WEIGHT GAIN.. not once single pound lost.. i'm beside myself.. so so mad.. so upset.. i just don't know what to do.. my dietician sais its my hormones (PCOS) but wtf is someone meant to do, there cannot be NO answer for ppl with Pcos.. they can't be expected to stay fat their whole life.. my depression is getting so bad i'm comfort eating again... and considering my surgeon knows nothing about PCOS i'm running an uphill batttle.. i have f*ckall restriction.. (i only have 3 mils left to go in my band, he will only do one mil at a time) so therefore these binging encounters mean i can eat heapsss.. its ridiculous the amounts i can eat!! i' feel like im going to do something stupid.. i just don't know what else to do.. this was my last option.. and if i can't lose weight and be a happier healthier person.. i don't want to be at all...

    Fearful of weight gain.

Hi All, I am new here, but I am pregnanct with my 3rd child, my first while banded. I have to say that I am very fearful of the weight gain, but I am 6 months pregnant and have lost 6 lbs. I am having the healthiest pregnancy ever. I had 2 terrible previous pregnancies with hypertension being a major issue and pre-eclampsia. My doctor does not want me to gain any weight so I have continued on the health diet, but I had all the fluid removed from my band. I check the scale everyday in the morning and if I see that I am creeping up, I get back to the exercise and healthy eating. Just keep balancing what you eat. It works and my baby is growing big and beautiful.

    Weight regain with VSG?

My surgeon told me to expect a weight gain of 10-20% once I hit my lowest weight. He said the body will adjust up to where it feels healthy/normal.
  14. Q1- Can anyone that has had the ideal surgery and success give me an overview of what to expect? It is possible to have an ideal experience. I recovered from surgery within a day, had small but regular fills and lost steadily - it was fast and very gratifying for six monmths, steadied out to a pound or two a week for the rest of the first year, a pound a week for the second year and then over time, I graudally lost about 10 to 15 more pounds, for a total of 100 lost. I started with a BMI of 36, so with a 100lb loss I have lost well into low BMI territory, and am now "thin" not just less fat. I ran regularly and now also do boxing and bootcamp, but I never felt I worked THAT hard on my eating, the portion control was all I really needed. Q2- What are the rules? What will I never be able to eat? What will I never be able to do? Well, I've found I can eat anything if I want to (some foods are harder than others but that varies wildly between individuals, however bread, rice, Pasta and fresh fruit are common). I cant truly "pig out" but you can certainly enjoy a special meal and feel like you've had a treat. If I do something a bit naughty like eat crap int he mid afternoon, I simply cant eat dinner. That takes care of weight gain from small indulgences, but you have to use your stomach space wisely so its not good to fill up on sugar and then not eat your healthy meal. We just dont have "rules" in Australia like you guys do, its just a matter of eating sensibly and eating smaller portions. Q3- Do you have any regrets? Absolutely none. Q4- What is the financial impact after the surgery? Groceries, supplements, etc.? I dont do supplements - I always took a basic multi Vitamin which i still do. I dont do Protein shakes and bars, ever, so there's no added cost there. I eat fresh food and cook from scratch like I always did. However, since I had my surgery five years ago, my family has grown, my kids have become teenagers etc so I truly havent noticed any savings on food, but I do throw more out from my plate. I never spent a lot of money on take away food either, didnt have a drive thru habit and didnt eat a lot of junk foods like McDonalds. I notice that meals that the recipe book says "serves four" does five of us for two meals, but my kids also complain that I give them tiny dinners and starve them, since my perception of "normal" is now a bit skewed.
  15. Well, I must say I learned a lot today at my post op. I wish it had been sooner so I could be privy to this info but I am glad just the same. I learned several things. 1st--my doc does not have us on a long liquid phase after surgery because he has found more success in his patients if they are re-introduced slowly to foods as soon as possible. Less cheating and damage to the band. Plus since he does not put any fluid in the band the healing time is less. 2nd--I should be eating a "salad plate" size portion at each meal. And here I thought I was eating too much. 3rd--I must eat 1200 cal a day. Eating low low calories can cause weight gain or I would stop losing weight. As it was explained to me, I should not be struggling with my diet. The only thing I should have to be concerned with is healthy choices. The amount I eat should be dictated by my band. Hence the reason for follow ups and fills, of course we all know that. Got to get to the "green zone otherwise known as the "sweet spot". Well I weight in and have lost a total of.....33 POUNDS!! 14.7 lbs since surgery. Not a lot but REALLY excited. My doctor is thrilled with it. He said slow is the way to go. As he put it, if you expected to lose a lot weight fast then you should have chosen one of the other surgeries. So true!! My BP is down. It is normal so that thrills me. I am off the reflux meds now. I haven't had any since surgery. Ok, so I had my 1st fill. I didn't have anything in the band and now I have 3 cc's. It was interesting. It didn't hurt one bit. We chatted as the nurse practitioner did my fill. It was tight and all day I sipped water and ate mushy foods. The swelling is down now because I am no longer burping when I swallow water. Then...I get home today and a local hospital (not the one I went to) sends me an invitation to their weightloss surgery seminar. I had never even inquired there. Strange.
  16. if that's seriously all you eat then there's something really not adding up, I agree, because your portions would have to be simply enormous to cause weight gain and a weight problem. Do you never eat butter, cheese, any dairy, any other food than that? Is it all no fat/steamed and no carb? is that fish and chicken simply plain, a fillet steamed or grilled? Or are you really eating processed foods of a much wider variety and whilst not obviously overeating or pigging out taking in more than your body uses? To weigh 340, your body would require significant calories to not lose weight and I cant fathom how you could possibly take in that many on such a tiny variety of low fat food. I'd be insisting that it be checked out. Keep a journal for a few weeks perhaps?

    It's June already

Hey All, Mrs. Husker, you are one of my many mentors here. We all know we have our ups and downs and at times don't want to post. But then we get the courage and come and post. My reason this time was when I last posted I was losing and excerising and taking fitness classes and yoga. Since that time I had gain back 10lbs, taking fewer classes and less yoga. We at times find a reason to blame our weight gain on something. Mines is my frig needed repair and I was relying on my freezer to temp as the frig. Being it could only hold buy so much, I found myself eating take out often. Lending to my weight gain. I can't fit any of my new clothes and can't seem to find anything I like this summer. So, I decided to come back and just post my results thus far. And it's not good. So, I going to take a stand and get back on track. 1st I need to get to back to going to the gym in the mornings. To work on time to get to leave early to get to my exercise/yoga classes on time. And once I get into that habit, I'm back on track. But, we all know starting it is the hard part. So, thanks for being here and encouraging each other. Atleast this is the one place where we know, there are others that can relate to our problems. Love to you All. Thanks for being here and coming back...

    Fearful of weight gain.

This has been the hardest thing for me. I gained 5 pounds right off the bat. Now I am actually 4lbs under where I was when I got preg. I am preg with twins and am having some bleeding issues right now and am on bedrest. So for me, I have stopped worrying about the weight gain and more about having 2 healthy babies. The weight will come back off.

    Fearful of weight gain.

wow in 10 months u lost so much congrats on doing that. I also have the big fear of weight gain during pregnancy but in know that i have not been as strict as i should and have been using pregnancy as an excuse and im accually fitting quite a bit of food in. My first few weeks of pregnancy i accually lost like 8 kgs which i was so happy about because i wasnt budging on my weight for so long. But i lost due to having so much morning/ all day sickness.. now that i have passed that ive been eating n eating and have put almost all that 8kgs back on. I was very upset as i know it cant be all baby. People are telling me to stop being so effected by my weight while im pregnant, but i know i could do better.
  20. I just found out I was pregnant. I was banded in September of 2010 and had recently reached my goal of losing 110 lbs. I was feeling great about myself and then found out I was pregnant. My husband and I were told we would never have a baby naturally, because of infertility on his part. So imagine my shock when I saw the Pregnant on three digital tests! In one week of finding out I have gained 7lbs. I know that weight gain is going to happen, but for 10 months losing weight has been my focus. I was crushed when I step on the scale to find I had gained 7lbs. How do you deal with the weight gain? Does it get easier? I had set a goal to gain only 25-30lbs. I know that I will have an easier time losing the weight because of the band, but gaining weight is freaking me out!:tongue2: Please tell me I am not the only one!
  21. hey im also 20 weeks, congrats on your pregnancy.. i dnt feel a lump in my throat but i am eating like a horse and guessing that i have stretched my band. i have 5 mls in my band and i didnt want to unfill it because i was scared of weight gain. At the beginning of preg i weighed in at 101kgs but went down to 93kgs in first trimester frm being so sick.. now im 98kgs and its abit disheartning.

    Band Tightness During Pregnancy

I've had 3 gradual unfils during my pregnancy. I had my first at 8 weeks which really helped, and then i had another one about halfway through. I was so scared by how wide open i felt and i literally thought i was going to start gaining uncontrollably, but eventually that fill started to get tighter and i settled back in. Then in the 3rd trimester i was too tight again, and back i went for my third unfil and that seems to have done the trick too. I've had very good success with this gradual unfil method. My weight gain has been very reasonable. I'm 35 weeks and have gained around 15 lbs which my doctor has been just fine with (my BMI before pregnancy was just a tick over the healthy range). This gradual unfil method has also worked for me because all my adjustments are 100% covered by my insurance so i have no pressure to limit the number of visits i have. I know others have to pay quite a bit or travel long distances so that effects their decisions. Anyway, i'm not exactly sure why my band has gotten tighter throughout, but i have assumed that in the beginning it had to do with the hormones, and now it's just the baby slamming my organs around and messing with my band. I'm curious to see what happens when i deliver. Part of me thinks that once the hormones die down a bit i might just be wide open! But i'm not worried, b/c i'll just go get a slight fill. My doctor and i are happy as long as i'm able to eat enough to nourish myself and my baby. Just wanted to share my experience with everyone. I've had a fantastic pregnancy with no morning sickness (if i had been throwing up i would have had to revise my unfil strategy for sure!) I'm just about in my final month and now everything is harder, but i feel like having controlled my weight gain has really helped me to feel good during this pregnancy (but maybe it's just been luck, who knows!) Good luck ladies!

    4th of July Challenge!

You go girl! Maybe I should have, too! It might have helped me with my Water weight gain. I had lots of Soup this weekend because I had a fill Friday and my surgeon told me to do liquids all weekend. I would have stuck to Protein shakes but the ones I have are really high in protein and I didn't want to overdo it.
