    can anyone help

hmmm. Difficult dilemma. Being a meat eater, it is hard for me to come up with ideas for Protein. Nuts, Beans and tofu maybe, however that seems it would get boring after a week or so. I wonder if a vegetarian site might be more help. I myself just recently realized that eggs were so high in fat. I didn't really know this, I guess I should have but I just found out that a single egg has 27 grams of fat. Eeek! Good luck, sorry I couldn't be more help. P.S. I guess there is also Protein shakes and supplements.
  2. I know - I really never doubted my surgeon until this point. I think it just really shocked me and I felt unprepared. I'm very good at following things for a short amount of time and then I stray. I wasn't expecting to be able to eat solids so soon. I mean, my family's doing a cookout next weekend for the 4th...don't know how I'm going to handle that! I was worried about that with the calories...I don't want my body to get used to this amount, and I've heard stories of people increasing their calorie count to get out of stalls, so maybe it'll be good for me to increase my calories a bit and aim a little higher. @@Babbs I've struggled with that concept because I love veggies. I was a vegetarian for several years and don't like a ton of sources of protein, but I'm trying. I've had chicken the last several days and nights and that's how I've hit my protein goal lately. Before, I was doing more veggie purees and they didn't give me nearly enough protein.
  3. thank you guys for your input!!! i'm very happy that it's possible! yep, i've seen forks over knives & also fat, sick & nearly dead. both are very good! sad thing is that i've been looking into that kinda stuff for years.. also looked at the gerson therapy & raw foods.. been trying to eat more raw vegetables & fruits.. but i don't stick to anything for very long, i mean, i have stuck to eating more fruit & vegetables.. but i don't really stick to "diets" for very long because i have no hope & just don't care about myself enough to stick with it. the reason i'm considering having surgery, is because it would force me to stick with something.. and i'm 100% guaranteed to lose weight (or die in the operating room)... i used to have more willpower than a chinese olympic athelete.. lol (that is not a dig on chinese people, just saying i had VERY strong willpower).. now i just don't care if i'm here or not.. i only stick around because i'm too chicken to off myself and am an only child & don't want to completely devastate my parents.. my doctor's also always up my butt about my weight.. anyway.. JenC, thank you for telling me about shakeology! that's pretty nifty! it really does make me happy to know that you can be a vegetarian or vegan after weight loss surgery.. i looked at the diet on the mayo clinic for post surgery & thought "wow, that's almost nothing but animal products.. i don't know if i could do that...." and of course, when you hear "low carb" the common stereotype is all meat & cheese & little vegetation... :/ but you can do low glycemic, low carb, low sodium, low sugar & be vegetarian/vegan. i just don't see a lot of that! but i'm excited now! woo hoo!
  4. YES it's possible. I'm a de facto vegetarian who flirts with veganism. I was a vegan for two years a lifetime ago (obviously it's possible to be vegan and still seriously overweight!) and post-sleeve have returned to vegetarianism with a vengeance. I will say it's a lot easier if you include dairy or eggs, but it's not impossible to do if you don't. You already know about vegetarian Protein powders, but don't forget about "real food" options--Peanut Butter powder (PB2), sneaking rinsed and drained Beans into everything including smoothies, avocado, etc. You're going to want your Protein Powder at the beginning especially, when your volume is so restricted. I include dairy on most but not all days, but I'm 16 months out. A vegetarian diet is typically higher volume than a diet that includes animal protein, so be prepared to sneak those veggies in--Soups, green smoothies, alternate milk smoothies (I make a wicked good spinach/kale/white bean/peach/blueberry/almond milk concoction!)--whatever you can do to get a lot of nutrition in a small or easily-assimilated volume. Agree with the poster above regarding searching the forum. There's a bunch of us veggie-heads on here, and you're more than welcome to PM or post questions, etc. I actually won't be able to help with the protein powder thing, since I haven't ever used it (couldn't tolerate any of them immediately post-op and just switched to "real food" protein sources from the get-go, including dairy), but I am happy to help if needed on other topics. Welcome to the board!
  5. just curious if you can be a vegetarian or vegan if you're sleeved, as long as you meet the nutritional requirements that the doctor gave you?.. everyone always asks how they get their Protein, but they have vegan protein powders and stuff, as well as leafy green vegetables & stuff. everything has protein in it. alrighty, thanks for your time.
  6. Where to begin I started gaining weight about 7 years ago to date, right before I had my son. Seven years later here I am today on my way to weight loss Surgery. A piece of me feels ashamed I let myself go like this, but all I can do now is pick up the pieces and strive for a better life. Ever since I can remember I had a yoyo weight up and down on the scales. Throughout my teen years I was a vegetarian who never ate meat, or junk. I was the girl you would find riding a bike for miles to lose weight or walking for miles afraid of gaining weight. Now today I’m just the lost FAT GIRL trying to find herself. I decided on weight loss surgery because over the last couple of years the struggle has gotten harder and harder High Blood Pressure, Swollen ankles and legs constantly, and PCOS I’m a mere 32 and something tells me if I want to see 33 or any other age it’s time to make a drastic change not only for me but for my son. So as I began my journey to the other side please, please leave words of encouragement.
  7. Hello, I am a year post-op (gastric sleeve) and would like to start transitioning towards a plant-based diet and eventually become a vegetarian. I am wondering how any vegetarians out there get their full amount of Protein. I have started doing research about what vegetables are high in protein. My concern is that I won't be able to eat enough of them to get my daily requirements. I would love any advice, sample meal plans, etc., from anyone who has this all figured out Thanks!

How to avoid awkwardness during group meals?

It's perfectly acceptable to make a specific request. Talk to the person making the meal or catering it and explain what you need. You can always blame it on your doctor without being specific. If you were vegetarian, or lactose intolerant, or allergic to peanuts, or something similar it would be expected to let the person preparing and/or providing the meal know about any dietary restrictions. Just politely let them know what you need. If they can't accommodate your request then you have the option to bring something you can eat.

    Cooking

I still cook for my family, but I honestly cook LESS for myself now than every before! Don't worry about not cooking. A typical snack for me is string cheese - low cooking required. A meal might be scrambled egg whites... which, I cook in the microwave! LOL! Oh, I also love to "cook" morningstar vegetarian products. Lots of Protein, and super yummy... and also hardly considered "cooking". Don't worry, you find easy little meals to make for yourself.

    Help from a pro?

First off thanks everyone for taking the time to answer and for the advice. I guess I'm stressing a lot on protein because I became vegetarian 2 months ago and even with out the surgery it's been a rough couple weeks

    Low carb Vs. Calorie counting?

We seem to have 3 vocal camps running around. Low carb keto. Low carb non keto. Vegetarian. Everyone counts calories.

    WLS cookbooks

Oh, can I add one? I bought "Hungry Girl's 300 calorie Recipes", which has some great, small-portioned foods, including a bunch of recipes that need a mug and a microwave. She seems to lean towards the vegetarian side of cooking, but the few I've tried have been good. And, there's always Egg-face's blog. She's got a ton of WLS friendly stuff on there, including tons of shake recipes for Protein drinks.

    Sugar

I've never craved sugar until surgery! UGH!!! I want it, and I want it in cookie form! Im now trying to eat a more plant based diet which includes fruit, that's how Im going about killing the craving...hopefully eating more vegetarian will help, so far so good, and I feel better without consuming whey, I prefer to get my Protein via Vegan options such as nuts, lentils, Beans, etc...

    Working out after GBS

I had my surgery 13 years ago and the biggest disconnect I have noticed is the lack of support as it pertains to working out after gastric bypass. When I first had my surgery, I walked around my office during my breaks but didn't join a gym. The lack of this lifestyle change, and developing some bad eating habits resulted in a regain of 40 lbs during the first ten years. I finally managed to change my eating habits to vegetarian and started working out regularly. I joined the gym and have been a loyal gym rat ever since. I think the thing that kept me away was the insecurity of not knowing how to use the machines and thinking "everybody knows I had surgery!' I finally hired a trainer and she knew little, if anything, about gastric bypass and some of the limitations. She read up on the surgery and developed a workout routine to suit my needs. Since I joined this and another forum, I have received a lot of messages from local people who wanted to workout with me and I have met some of them at my gym and given them a workout. I have looked for trainers who offer workouts to gastric bypass patients and I cannot find anybody locally! So I'm wondering if any of my fellow gastric friends have received training from someone who focuses on the gastric/lap band community? I am thinking of getting my personal trainer certification and just focusing on this community!

    CONFUSED??? Is Protein, Protein?

As a long-time vegetarian, I'd like to point out that by combining non-animal Proteins, you can make complete proteins. Combinations like rice and Beans or grains and beans can be just as complete as meat. It does take a little more planning, if that's something you are concerned about. I've always been told that just eating a good variety of Protein from different sources is all you need to do. Also, lentils have a higher quality protein than steak, if you like them. Lots of choices... Emily

What should I be eating...I need help!

No Laura I'm not a vegetarian. Lol I eat chicken mostly. I am afraid to eat more. I have been stalled for months now...I didn't realize fruit was considered a carb !! Like I said I eat alot of chicken I guess I'm afraid to eat it all the time. Are veggies considered carbs too ? Lately I've been eating polenta (corn meal) with some chilli (1/2 cup) approx. I appreciate the responses guys.

    Vegetarians...

I actually never said I was vegan or vegetarian, I am a pescetarian. I don't eat land animals. I'm nervous about telling my surgeon because they talked Protein protein protein SO much in my nutrition class. I'm afraid I can't convince him that I will get my protein in, without the help of animals. I did finally get a surgery date though, 4/16 and I go back to see my dr. on the 11th, I guess I'll talk to him then.

    Vegetarians...

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I did a search and couldn't find anything. Is anyone here a vegetarian? I am (hopefully) being banded next month and am nervous about the 1st few days. My doctor has a few "rules" about what you have to do before you leave the hospital and drinking chicken broth is on that list. I haven't told him that I don't eat meat so I'm scared we will battle it out in the hospital. I did buy some vegetable broth and have unflvored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury to add to it for when I get home. Any suggestions? Also any high Protein post-surgical suggestions would be great. I do eat seafood and eggs, and I have already stocked up on protein Water and Unjury. Thanks! -Stacey
  22. This just happened to me -- I am 19 weeks post-op and about 3 weeks ago, I hit a wall. I was losing 2-3 lbs a week and then BLAM! nothing. My weight was fluctuating up and down a pound or two every day for 3 weeks. It was driving me crazy. Just 3 days ago something seemed to break and I'm down 3.5lbs in 3 days. I did literally all of the things they tell you to break a stall -- upped my water, logged every single thing that went into my mouth, changed up what I was eating and changed how I was exercising. I have no proof, but I think what broke things for me is radically upping my fiber (I prioritized getting 25g a day above everything, including protein) and completely cut out dairy. (I am a vegetarian, but I went totally vegan for the past week.) I was super upset during the stall -- I would blame myself, yell at the scale, etc. Just keep fighting your way through this -- it sucks, but I promise you it will break.

    Any Vegetarian Sleevers?

I will be two weeks out tomorrow so it hasn't been an issue yet. I am lacto ovo so I am planning on lots of eggs, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. I've been a vegetarian for two years but I do find myself really craving a McDonalds chicken sandwich!

    Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian?

Hi Robin! I'm also a vegetarian! There's not many of us out here. My nutritionist helped with showing me many different high-Protein vegetarian items, most I already knew about but it was very helpful to go over it all. I had my surgery Nov 16. I've had some complecations (but not because of being a vegetarian) so I'm still on a full liquid diet. I'm having trouble getting all my Proteins down. I mix my Protein powder with Westsoy soy milk which has 11g protein per 8oz. I try to have a serving of unjury chicken Soup (it's vegetarian) it has 20g protein. If you have any questions let me know.. and let me know if you find any high Protein shakes that taste good! Kelli
  25. Your friend gave you awful advice. I can't speak for bypass patients but as a sleeve patient I can eat whatever I want. The difference is the amount of what I can eat. Because that amount is small I choose to make sure that what I eat is quality. I go for real food; fresh veg, and because I am vegetarian Beans, eggs and cheese. I don't reach for junk food. However I can eat pretty much anything I want. Yesterday I had chocolate chips Cookies. That's not a typical choice, but I can have it if I want. My thought process is different. Now it's why would I regularly eat chocolate chip cookies when I went through surgery, and then 6 weeks of reintroducing food back into my life (2 weeks all liquid/2 weeks purees/2 weeks soft foods)? Why would I eat chocolate chip cookies regularly when I spent the past year exercising to loose 115lbs? It's about making good choices and not being a slave to food. The holiday's are over. Get rid of those leftovers. You don't want to go into surgery still having cravings from all those sugary carbs.
