  1. 9pdmnm5 I too have had a hard time recovering from the anastesia myself. That is one of my main concerns. I am hoping this time will be better. I go for what my Dr's office calls Bariatric University on Monday and do my preop at the hospital right after. Pradice73 I hope you feel better soon. I am so excited to find some buddies to walk through this process with. I will be on here frequently as I want to be prepared for whatever may come. Thanks for the encouragement Mutt! I know I need all the help I can get.

    Cooking book

Please look at Pinterest, Bariatric food recipes, and you will find a cookbook is not necessary!!!! Good luck!
  3. Excited to start the pre-op diet, as it's one step closer to surgery! Not so excited to be starving, but I'm committed! Wondering...Bariatric Advantage sells a Pre-op kit (bars, shakes) that I think will last 2 weeks. It's expensive--$200. But, I'm thinking it might be worth it just for convenience and peace of mind (knowing I'm eating correct amounts). Have you tried it? Your thoughts on it? Thanks!

Day one of the pre-op diet

So I called the dietitian at the bariatric that I am working with. She told me that I do not need to focus on all liquids as the instructions I was given said. She said that she has looked into the research on the liver shrinking diet and that the point is to get as much protein as possible and as little carbs, I have to stay under 30 carbs a day. Which means how I had interpreted the diet (drinking a lot of protein shakes) is not what I should do, as milk and any dairy has a lot of carbs. I need to eat plain meat (chicken, fish, ground turkey, etc.) and take protein supplements if I need to to bring my protein up to at least 60g a day. This sounds much better than all liquids, but now I need to rethink my approach. So, that being said, I am going to need to go shopping for eggs, fish, chicken, etc. I need to get unflavored protein powder that I can mix in with things other than milk and will still taste ok. I need to restructure my whole eating plan for the next two weeks and do something about the groceries that I just bought on Fri. As for the rest of my life, I am WAY behind in my calculus class, and I have to take a quiz online some time between Fri and Sun. WAY, WAY behind. I e-mailed my instructors about my missed class from Mon when I was in the hospital and still have not heard back. I am broke and the sub teaching jobs are hard to come by this early in the school year. Oh and I started yesterday and have cramps, Back to work. Maybe things will look better tomorrow.
  5. Hi! I'm new to the site (and like so many others, excited that I found it) and have just started my lap-band journey. I'm still in the start stage, but have a meeting Tuesday with my local bariatric center. I've been battling my weight my whole life, but was able to keep it down (if you call 157 down) until I went to college, and met my husband. That was 11 years ago. And since then, we have both gained lots of weight. Once our son was born, five years ago, we decided to lose the weight as a team. We tried the South Beach, Atkins, and finally Weight Watchers. I was devastated when my DH seemed to have the pounds melt off him, and I seemed to put them on even though I stuck to the same diet and exercise routine he did. Now, it's up to me. I've always said that I wouldn't have surgery because I ate my way to the 300lbs and BMI of 50 I currently have. Then, my DH pointed out that our son always draws round people, instead of stick figures. That was it for me. I want to be a good example for him! And, everyone needs a little help once and a while, right? It'll still be up to me to lose the weight; the surgery is just a little nudge in the right direction. So, now I'm just counting down the days until my meeting. Yeah!
  6. Hi Mark, I was pre-diabetic about 7 years ago with fasting sugar in the range of 111-112. In the intervening time I've gotten my band and lost around 70 lbs. Now my fasting sugar is around 99-104. So, it is slightly elevated, but did not progress. My endocrinologist was thrilled (I left his practice for a bit due to insurance changes, but am back now). But, my sugar has not gone all the way down to normal, either. I can also tell you that my bariatric surgeon will not do a band on a full-blown diabetic, due to the remission rate achieved with bypass. It doesn't exactly answer your question, but I hope it helps a bit.
  7. From reading great advice on this forum I made a list of these items & gathered in preparation........ :-) bariatric Protein powder (I like the fusion chocolate mousse) & some pre-made Protein drinks for quick & easy grabs GasX (sounds like the gas afterwards for a few days is quite painful) Nexium (ditto on the acid) liquid Tylenol (to use after the dr's liquid painkiller has finished it's job) lots of gatorade, s/f Jello, Water bottles chewable bariatric Vitamins (again the Fusion isn't bad...the mixed berry looks a bit intimidating but is relatively easy to chew up and swallow...my dr advised 2 of those a day for always after.) pill crusher (this is a cool little thing I found at WM which crushes any non-chewable pills you have to take) low cal/lactose free yogurt of course my chapstick! that's all I can remember at the moment! Best of luck! I go in tomorrow morning............(feels like the first day of school when you were a kid!)
  8. Ok...I strongly dislike my job. The only reason why I am still there is because of the insurance. Here is the thing...my company was bought out recently by another company and before the buy out...I wasn't covered but now since the new changes..bariatric surgery is covered. Now to the point...the new insurance doesn't take in affect until January. If I happen to resign..how long can I keep COBRA and will I be covered in January once they switch over?

  10. My first appointment with my surgeon is on July 14th, so I have a good 5 weeks. I would like to use this time wisely. I don't feel the need to go on weeks of food funerals, though I am sure I will have 3 or 4 favorite meals during this time. But how else can I best use the time til mid-July? Here's what I am in the process of doing now: I have read several books and am well versed on the different surgery types, am uncertain btw. sleeve and RNY, will rely on physician input once he sees the whole health picture. I am seeing my primary care doc on this month to officially record starting weight, and let them know I am getting WLS. I will attend support group meetings. Am getting my psych eval done this week. Trying out different protein products. So I guess the big question is, do I start serious, low carb, dieting now, in the meantime? I am the type who can lose 20 pounds fairly easily, but then....I stall, and I stall HARD, and then I usually get sloppy and start slowly regaining. So I am a little worried about losing my 20 easy pounds, showing up to the surgeon mid-July and he says, hey lose 10% of your body weight before surgery please, and then I am stuck "starting over" right in the really hard part of every diet I have ever been on. Maybe I am whining here? I would like to do everything I can to get a head start before that first surgeon appt, since I'd like to do the surgery as soon as I can bc of work cycles (I work in college administration). I supposedly have no mandatory diet and exercise waiting period (we'll see on that....). I figure that starting to lose weight now will just mean it's some weight at least that I don't have to lose later, so maybe I should just jump in and diet? Try bariatric recipes? What do you recommend? Thanks for any input or advice.
  11. Thanks for the reply Brightfaith I have worked with a bariatric nutritionist for almost a year now. I have met my surgeon. I am currently in therapy for the binge eating and once they sign off then it will be up to the insurance. So far insurance has given me all the hoops I have to jump through before they’ll give me an answer.
  12. Hello Everyone, I hope that you are all doing well. I'm trying to get back into eating right. I had a couple of bad days of food choices with the holiday weekend. I work at a hospital and everyone brought in food to Celebrate the 4th and of course nothing was healthy. (Funny since we are all in the nursing field and have a bariatric center in the hospital). I am going back to the Dr. on the 15th to have some of my Fluid put back in. I had to have 2ml removed 2 1/2 weeks ago after a bad migrain. I had severe vomiting that put some serious stress on my band to the point I couldn't even drink Water. Feeling much better now. I have actually been more suscessful losing weight since they took some of the fluid out? Has anyone else lost weight after having fluid removed? Once again thanks for the replies and I look forward to talking to everyone. Ronda

    Cincinnati bandsters ! Please help!

wow. i gotta say looking for a job based only on if they cover lapband is a new one to me. as a small business owner with 9 employees can i give a different viewpoint on this? sorry if it seems crass. i provide pretty decent healthcare insurance for our folks here< at real reasonable rates, but i do not have bariatric coverage included in our pkg. i had lapband by the way in august of this year. i was a self pay. i excluded bariatric coverage because i have 2 employees and 1 of their spouses that would probably utilize it. sounds like a typical "cheap" employers huh? look at it from an employers side. 2 years ago we had 2 gallbladder surgeries and a pregnancy. our renewal rate was initially +24% the following year. my agent got it down to only a 16% increase. we had very few claims last year and no serious ones. latest renewal was less than 1% for 09. good for all of us. if only 1 of these folks had a bariatric operation here in the states it would run minimum of $20k and up to $45k. for 2 folks, double that. here in lies the problem...i know these folks need help but if we have those surgeries go on our insurance our renewal rates would approach 40% to 60% next year IF they choose to renew at all. then what do i do when i can't afford to provide any insurance to ANY of my other empoyees. everyone thinks employers are just greedy and don't want people to be healthy if it costs them money. not true. most small business owners i know want to provide good coverage for their employees but the insurance companies have us by the balls! small companies can't get insurance if there are too many claims on the history so we are forced to be selective where necessary to be able to maintain any coverage. sorry, i'll get off my soapbox now. my advise to you is DO NOT advirtise to potential employers that you want bariatric surgery as soon as you qualify. no one will hire you. trust me on this one. good luck.

    I match my driver's license!

That is so cool! I remember when that happened! I remember when I originally put 240. I think I was actually about 260 at the time. Then, I had to renew it a couple of months ago (was it only a couple of months!??!?!) and I struggled on what weight to put there. I was still 55 pounds from my goal weight so that wouldn't work. So, I put my EXACT weight from that morning--235--which was only 5 pounds less than what was originally on it. The DMV guy thought I was strange for making him change it only 5 pounds. I don't know about other states, but I know CA has the date your license was issued on the bottom. I figured I could go back later and see what I was on that exact date. Well, it's been about 2 months and I am now 219...16 more pounds gone! Yay!
  16. After years of research and finally making up my mind to make the choice to improve my quality of life. I am starting to feel this will NEVER happen..and I am bombed about it. I have been waiting for this surgery for years now. I did my research and decided on which I wanted and I made up my mind do have gastric bypass. At the time the insurance I had did not cover bariatric surgery. I swicted jobs a few years later and FINALLY the ins co I had would cover... I made up my mind to have surgery! I called my insurance company to see what was necessary I was told that my plan did NOT require the supervised weight loss. My surgeon's office was told them same thing. In January 2015 I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, so of course wls was put on the back burner. I am over that and all healed up so I go back to my weight loss journey. I get to one of my last appts last week (Nutrition) and was advised that I my insurance requires me to be on a 6 mo medically supervised weight loss plan...WHAT?!!!!! I know that a lot of people have to do this so when I 1st called my insurance company to see what was necessary I specifically asked that question and I was told that my plan did NOT require the supervised weight loss. My surgeon's office was told them same thing. I really wanted to get this done this year because I have met my annual deductible and the surgery would be covered by my insurance co 100%. ..a 6 month diet plan means I wont be done until December. Which will probably push my approval (surgery) into 2016..I can not afford to pay the high deductibles and fees. I am sooo disappointed and hurt. I was really beginning to accept this was going to happen...I am crushed...devastated!! I just want off this ride. Hopefully something can be worked out somehow...but if not...I am afraid that the "life" I have now is what is as good as it is going to get. has this happened to ANYONE else or does anyone know about how long the approval process takes???
  17. I really wish I'd seen this article before having the crapband surgery! Just found this posted on OH... sleep apnea). Data Sources and Study Selection - Electronic literature search of MEDLINE, Current Contents, and the Cochrane Library databases plus manual reference checks of all articles on bariatric surgery published in the English language between 1990 and 2003. Two levels of screening were used on 2738 citations. Data Extraction - A total of 136 fully extracted studies, which inluded 91 overlapping patient populations (kin studies), were included for a total of 22,094 patients. Nineteen percent of the patients were men and 72.6% were women, with a mean age of 39 years (range, 16-64 years). Sex was not reported for 1537 patients (8%). The baseline mean body mass index for 16 944 patients was 46.9 (range, 32.3-68.8). Data Synthesis - A random effects model was used in the meta-analysis. The mean (95% confidence interval) percentage of excess weight loss was: 47.5% (40.7%-54.2%) for patients who underwent gastric banding; 61.6% (56.7%-66.5%), gastric bypass; 68.2% (61.5%-74.8%), gastroplasty (VSG); and 70.1% (66.3%-73.9%), biliopancreatic diversion or duodenal switch. Operative mortality (</=30 days) in the extracted studies was 0.1% for the purely restrictive procedures, 0.5% for gastric bypass, and 1.1% for biliopancreatic diversion or duodenal switch. Conclusions - Effective weight loss was achieved in morbidly obese patients after undergoing bariatric surgery. A substantial majority of patients with diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea experienced complete resolution or improvement.
  18. HI i'm new to the site, after many years of going back and forth with multiple diets i have made the decision to proceed with bariatric surgrey, in stage one diet now , to be followed by liquid diet. Happy i have found this site. :-)
  19. I was banded in December of 2005. I had many boughts of vomitting. Finally in August, 2007, I could not even keep liquids down, I had my band deflated and it was discovered that my band had slipped. I decided on removal because of the risk of future complications and the fact that I will no longer be insured for bariatric coverage. I am about ten days into my "post-band" life and it is nice to eat and keep the food down.

    Recipes needed:)

There is a recipes section on this site. Not sure if you have had a chance to look at it or not. Also there is a site called "the world according to eggface", it has a lot of bariatric recipes. I would definately suggest making a good homemade chicken stock for your liquid phase. Use carrots, celery, onions, chicken, Water, salt, pepper, garlic if you like it. For most this becomes a lifesaver during both preop and post op liquid phases. Trust me, you will be sick of Protein shakes and needing something warm and comforting to sip on. It helps with hunger too during preop. I made homemade chicken cacciatore using boneless chicken breasts, mushrooms, onion, green pepper, garlic and your favorite marinara sauce. I then vacuume sealed it in 2/3 oz. portions and froze them. When I wanted to eat, I simply dropped one in boiling water to heat through. I bought a vacuum sealed after another bariatric pal suggested it. It is one of the best tools in my kitchen given my need for tiny little portions, especially the first 6 months. I would bring home leftovers from the restaurant and get 2/3 more meals or more out of 1. I made a lot of different chicken, ground beef, ground chicken/turkey dishes. In the beginning casseroles are not recommended. Stick with Proteins with Fat free gravies or sauces to help them slide down easily. I would go to the eggface site to get some good purée ideas. I personally did not do well in that phase and lived on yogurt, Protein Shakes and cottage cheese. Good luck to you!
  21. I am a 45 y/o female. I am a conglomeration medical problems. They all culminated in a trip to the ER in an ambulance for a strained back due to coughing caused by congestive heart failure. I knew that day that I had to do something about my weight. I slept 1-2 hours a night due to sleep apnea. I heard of this surgery that could help 80 percent of the problems wrong with me. I could not be cured because nothing cures bone growth or arthritis, but it could slow the progression of my disease. I had a consultation with Dr Awad in Palm Springs, and found my BMI to be 53 and weighed 270. He thought it would be simple to get my insurance to pay for my procedure. They fought it. Finally, after running and jumping through all the fiery hoops they threw at me, I was able to set a date for my surgery 6 months after I first spoke to the surgeon. I had my surgery done 08/26/15 and I am sleeping now. I did not have any problems for my first 3 weeks, but now that I have reached the 4th week I have problems. I have difficulty getting fluids and Proteins in on the same days, and I am having difficulty eating enough times in a day to keep my hypoglycemia under control. I wake up sick, nauseous, and vomiting from not eating for more than 6-7 hours just from sleeping. Sleep was supposed to be a good thing. The bariatric team is great. I can not complain about how they have supported me through the last 40 pounds. I still have 90 more to go.

    getting the vertical sleeve approved

Your surgeon's insurance coordinator is going to be the most important person who can help you with this process. He or she should be familiar with all the major local insurance carriers, know their requirements, and know exactly how to tailor your insurance submission for the best chances of acceptance. That is the person who will put everything together and actually make the submission. As far as I know, things like personal letters only come into play if you have been denied and are appealing the denial. I never even saw my insurance submission, so I can't send you anything helpful there. I had a sit-down meeting with my insurance coordinator at my intake visit and we went over all my requirements in detail and set up a time-table for getting everything in. When it was all in, she submitted everything and I was approved in under 24 hours. So when you do have your appointment with your bariatric team, make sure you ask lots of questions about how they manage the approval process and what you need to do in order to have a successful submission package. Meet with the insurance coordinator if possible. I guess that's my best advice. Good luck to you!
  23. Hi everyone , I just had my 18 month post-op labs done and my B1 shot up from 157 to 203 in 6 months. Is hat normal? I read it can be caused by bariatric surgery. But normally people are deficient in both the sleeve and the bypass. Not sure if I need to worry or wait to hear from my surgeon. Any thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. I agree it is usually tight at breakfast and then looser at dinner. Your body must just react differently to the band. Try to have the good protein shakes you like availabe when it gets real tight to at least have that to sip on for your meal. I really like the Pure Protein drinks that come in a can like soda because they are easy to grab to take with me. They are 35 grams of protein. Try to count your calories threw the day to make sure you not going way under what you should be eating. I know that sounds weird because diet was usually starvation but when we don't eat our body metabilism shuts down and your body goes in starvation mode. You will feel tired and fatiged but not loose weight. I have done it a few times and I think to myself I am practically starving why am I not dropping wieght. Your body will think it is in starvation mode and just shut down and any little bit you do put in it will just hold onto. Our bodies are amazing and you will really start looking at everything as a science with protein and vitamins for fuel not just eat it to fill your belly. Just be careful with the soups because they are super salty and when your tight it is hard to get the water you need and by having lots of salt your going to have cotton mouth and feel FAMISHED for liquids. It is a balance that everyone's body is difference and some need more iron some need more B-12. I love the Bariatric Advantage multi vitamins you can get online because they are easy to chew and taste good. Then you know at least your multi vita are covered for the day. Check them out if you need suppliments or vita that are made for Weight loss patients. Good luck.

    Need a fill in Nebraska

There are several bariatric surgeons in the Omaha and Lincoln area that may be able to accomodate you. Otherwise you might have to go to Kansas City to get your fills. Hope this helps. Mona
