800 calories ? IS IT ENOUGH?
Womanvsmirror replied to Womanvsmirror's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you all for such a quick response. I do have a chart to keep measurements but I have to admit I have missed a week or 2 . Not staying consistent is one of my struggles that lead me here. the clothes are fitting better and when I do measure inches are definitely dropping. I have recently added flaxseed to my yogurt daily . But the lack of bm's got pretty bad 2 weeks ago and it was literally impacted.(sorry tmi).. The few times I jumped on the scale at the gym I was still at 195ish... been that weight since week 3. I get about 32-40 oz of Water a day eat plenty of Protein but have little to no Fiber in my diet. -

(I apologise in advance. This is going to be long and maybe a little graphic). Good question! I was moving from Japan back to Canada and with the stress of that the cramps and bowel movements became more pronounced. In particular, the stool was really different. It became very loose to pure liquid. Every colour of the rainbow came out, even a kind of translucent stool which I guess was solidified mucous. Even then I didn't think of going to the doctor until blood started appearing, which freaked me out. Unfortunately I had a trip planned to Vietnam before returning home, and I couldn't handle waiting for 3 weeks so I went to an international clinic there and they did a bunch of tests and told me they thought it was Crohn's or UC (and not cancer, which of course was my first assumption). They gave me meds and anti-inflammatories to deal with until I got back to Canada and could get tested properly. After my first colonoscopy I was told it was Crohn's-Colitis, but having seen a much better surgeon here in Japan he told me it was UC. He gave me the meds that I'm currently on (Pentasa, in both pill and enema form) and I've been happy with that. Unfortunately I have never lived in the same city as him, so going to see him regularly was a problem in the past, and now nearly impossible because of where I live now. I have yet to find a good gastroenterologist to replace him. So, instead of taking meds regularly, I take them when I have a flare-up, since I'm almost out. The problem with being obese is that a lot of doctors don't believe you could have a disease that often leaves people at the very low end of the BMI scale. One doctor in Japan told me I had diarrhea and to eat more fibre, without doing a single test to prove himself right and me wrong! This was when I was in a really bad flare-up and basically had blood and mucous pouring out of my a$$ many times a day (I know, TMI, but that's often the case with this disease). Similarly, the doctors in Canada were very reluctant to believe I had this condition until the tests came back from the colonoscopy (in fact, I remember seeing the infected areas as I was very awake (i.e. high on meds) during the entire procedure). I almost said "told you so" to the gastroenterologist when he told me I had Crohn's Colitis. He was clearly shocked at the diagnosis. I was very happy when I found my gastroenterologist here in Japan (he is not Japanese BTW) who took me seriously from the start and moved his schedule around so he could a colonoscopy the next day because he was so worried about my condition. Anyway, I have since found research articles that indicate up to 30% of people with Crohn's or UC are obese, which they can't explain. The problem with abdominal cramping and loose stools is that there are a lot of conditions that have similar symptoms, like lactose intolerance and celiac disease. I did go gluten-free for a month once (it was hard to maintain, mostly because I liked my beer in the summer months) and that helped tremendously with the symptoms (i.e. they disappeared). So clearly, even though I don't have celiac disease I have some level of gluten intolerance which causes flare-ups. Similarly, while most dairy I eat now is cheese or yogurt, when I add other things like normal milk or ice cream I get a lot of cramps so some lactose intolerance appears to be there too. But other things, like fibre (whole grains, gassy veggies, lettuce, fruit or vegetable peels, nuts, oatmeal, barley) are really problematic for me, as is alcohol (I'm off it now because I just can't deal with it). So...(sorry, this is really long!) UC symptoms include severe abdominal cramping - most of mine was in the 'corners' of the large intestine. Cramping could be caused by food or stress (sometimes delayed). Often a person has to go (#2) multiple times a day - this doesn't necessarily mean something will come out, but your rectum will be in full cramping mode, regardless of what's in your body. For me, once food or Water hits my stomach it will trigger a response in the lower GI tract, even though I know it's impossible for it to move that fast. That said, when symptomatic, food would pass through my system so fast I couldn't take any pills - birth control, Tylenol, whatever, would be sitting at the bottom of the toilet bowl an hour or two after I took it. The only time I've ever seriously lost weight is when I've been symptomatic with UC. One of the posters in the doctors office referred to "rectal urgency" which I thought was a great phrase to describe the feeling of needing to go "right now" - 30 sec or less, because you didn't know how long to hold back the cramping. I've had some accidents. The whole "never trust a fart" after weight loss surgery is true for Crohn's and UC patients as well. Sometimes the cramping is in my large intestine, sometimes the rectum. And sometimes it feels like I'm sh*tting fire acid out of my butt - like the digestive juices or something. It's very painful. If you look at the infographic here, I think a lot of UC patients have the bottom 3 types of loose stool (from loose and feathery to pure liquid). Blood and mucous are also usually part of the deal too. Even though it's always the lower bowels that are affected, I have found that antacids like Gaviscon, Tums, Pepto Bismol help reduce symptoms. I don't know why. Sometimes eating helps stop the cramping as well, which seems counterintuitive, but at least for me it would work. Okay, I gotta stop.

2 Week Liquid Diet, Day 1
LaDivaDev replied to Dawnie Doo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey Dawnie! Best wishes to you today and beyond! I too started the liquid pre-op diet today. It went okay although I felt hungry throughout and peed a LOT (I know TMI, but still). I'm on Protein shakes with some solid food options throughout provided by my dietician. How was the first day for you? I have to do this for 2 weeks. Dev -
Started Liquid Diet Today - Observations
LaDivaDev posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I began my 2-week liquid diet today (RNYGB is scheduled for 8/8). I'm noticing a few things right off the bat - warning - this may be TMI: I've been peeing like CRAZY, and when I feel the urge, it is all of a sudden and incredibly urgent. I felt a bit deprived today as I'm taking in 900-1000 calories per day (I pray this improves), BUT the good news is that my nutritionist provided me with dietary guidelines that allow for solid food consumption in addition to the Protein drinks I'm taking in. Question: has anyone experienced this pee pee phenomenon? Why does it occur? Thanks for the support, as always! -
Gassy and sore after protein shakes
missblonde20 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all I am 16 days out, and finding that my shakes are giving me horrible gas and pains. Sometimes it goes straight through me too (TMI) but the issue is, so does a lot of other stuff!! Sometimes milk goes straight through me, and yoghurt too. So I then resorted to water based shakes, and then they are doing the same thing. Bit confused on what to drink and eat now!!! Will call my nut tomorrow - but it's just frustrating. I am enjoying a poached egg most days, or hummus....but that's about all ha. -

Any 7/14's- post op?
cupples0405 replied to reducer623's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi guys, I'm 7/15. I'm doing well overall but I'm just so darn sore and it seems like I'm sore everywhere. From my head to my legs. My incisions are itchy but sore. Im able to get close to the 60g Protein daily (52ish) and close to the 64oz. I'm just so darn tired of sipping. I'm still having a hard time establishing a good pattern of bowel movements (sorry, TMI). I also still can't sleep on either side comfortably and that frustrating. No issues of nausea but did take some of my acid reflux medicine for the first time today. Thinking about adding some GasX to help in that department. Adding one more medication makes me cringe but if takes some of this discomfort away I'm game at this point. food has really been the last thing on my mind but I am looking forward to the puréed stage. I think once I start chewing something I'll start to feel normal again. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Hey, all! I had my sleeve done July 11 and had to come off my birth control pills because of the risk of blood clots. So, usually when i come off my pills, i would have my TOM a couple of days after. This time, a couple of days after surgery I stained a tiny bit and that was it! Does this surgery mess with our cycles?? I apologize for the TMI... Sent from my LGMS345 using the BariatricPal App

TMI.... What do you do when you have stomach bug post WLS
ocgirl15 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ok I have a stomach bug...7months post op. TMI...Diarrhea since last Saturday. I am staying hydrated so that's good. Mild fever at the beginning. My former go to foods are not ideal anymore. BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apples and toast... Actually allergic to apples ) would make me feel worse I am sure. What soothes your stomach? Any OTC medicines you recommend? At this point there is nothing my surgeon told me to avoid except NSAIDS. -
Here's my TMI status for the day: Why does my body wait until I get to work (well after weighing in) to poop now? *sigh*

Late June Sleeve Buddies?
ccflotron34 replied to Maggie143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone! Well I haven't been feeling too good lately, I'm not sure why. I had my sleeve done on 6/27 and I have been doing great every since. Until Saturday I woke up and had a scrambled egg and some cottage cheese, a few hours later it was like all my gas pain in my shoulders came back. Later on I took my evening Vitamin and instantly felt like I was going to throw up. Ever since then I have felt like someone is sitting on my chest, if I take too big of a breath it hurts, I keep having little hiccups and it hurts. So being scared to throw up I had no food yesterday but one string cheese and only a few bites of Cheerios this morning. I'm trying so hard to get my Water intake in but I'm not, and I'm not getting hardly any Protein in. I'm not really sure what to do or if I did something wrong? But it is very uncomfortable. Also, TMI, maybe lol but I am not having normal bowel movements at all, so I don't know if that could play a part in it or not. Any advice? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I am pissed ,too. Seriously, what happened? What happened to people? The people in the middle east? Here in US? The corruption in the government? TMI on social media? So on and so on.......like someone said Love will conquer hate. It has to start now. Those of you who have young children, turn off the tv and they will play on their own, books and fun activities. These innocent kids do not need to know what is happening out there! Lots of prayers !! Have a good day ????

Anyone had a conversion from sleeve to bypass?
lisylooby posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry I've posted this in two forums as I wasn't sure where to put it :-) Hey everyone, just wondering if there are any other sleevers who had to be converted to a bypass due to complications? I've had a pretty bad 8 months with complications from my sleeve and never actually progressed to solid food. My surgeon was concerned that I was dehydrated, malnourished and losing too much weight so she converted me to a gastric bypass. Gastric sleeve surgery was on 16 November 2015. So after my surgery I was pretty much vomiting up after my puree meals. The nurse at the hospital told me it was my own fault for eating too quickly (I ate 2 teaspoons over about 30 minutes), and since then I blamed myself every time I vomited. I rang the surgeon a couple of weeks after going home and said I was still regularly being sick and feeling hungry because nothing stayed down. Her advice was to cut down my intake even more and said I was having head hunger. So I listened to what she said and things didn't get much better. At one month from the operation, she sent me for a barium swallow as she was suspicious of a stricture. The swallow showed narrowing in the sleeve, but the surgeon decided to wait and see if it resolved itself after the swelling from surgery went down. This wasn't communicated to me so again I thought there was nothing wrong except for how I was eating. Fast forward to March of this year and the vomiting is getting worse - I felt pain whenever I ate and then an almost passive regurgitation of food and lots of mucus (Sorry for TMI). I even vomited in my sleep and aspirated, which was awful. I talked to the surgeon again and she did another swallow exam which showed a very tight stricture. So I had a gastroscopy during which it was dilated. I did it without sedation, just pain relief, but it was terribly painful. One week of relief after the dilation, then the same symptoms came back. So about 6 weeks after the original dilation, I was having it again as the stricture was back. I am a doctor so it was frustrating missing so much work for these investigations - I had to travel to another city to have it done. Fast forward again to early June, and the symptoms are there again! This is when the surgeon decided to admit me to hospital because I was getting too unwell and dehydrated. The gastroscopy showed I actually had TWO strictures - one at each end of the sleeve - and these were dilated. But the symptoms didn't go away and another barium swallow showed that there was still an obstruction. This led to an oesophageal manometry study, which confirmed that I had a torsion in the sleeve. This meant that when I ate, it was twisting on itself and effectively blocking the food and making it come back up. I was relieved this was found - turned out I had 2 rate complications in one. I was beginning to think that my symptoms were in my head after they kept happening after the dilations! On the 8th of July, I had the sleeve converted to a gastric bypass to basically bypass the torsion and enable me to eat again and get back on track. This was a horrendously painful surgery and I recovered slowly. I then got an obstruction of the distal anastamosis a few days later as it twisted and stuck to itself, resulting in blockage. Had to go back to theatre a week after the conversion to fix it. I am still in hospital as I type this (5 weeks here) but am hopeful to be discharged tomorrow! This whole process has been really tough emotionally. I keep thinking "I never signed up for a bypass" but I didn't have a choice - it was bypass or slowly starve to death. The diet sounds very restrictive and I worry about dumping, although I am not much of a sweet tooth. I think the main fear is being isolated - unable to eat with my family/friends. I know it will get better eventually, but it's really sad. I have talked through this with the health psychologists at the hospital which has been helpful. I feel a lot of regret for having the original surgery, but there was no way anyone would predict that I would have such a bad run with complications. My surgeon said she's only ever had one other patient she had to convert from sleeve to bypass. Stats wise: I'm 24 years old. Started at about 250 pounds. I'm 8 months out now and have lost 78 pounds, giving me a weight of 170 pounds and a BMI of 25.5. It obviously slowed down when I was unable to take solids, because I was given total parenteral nutrition (food through an IV which worked out to be about 2000 calories a day). But I'm happy with the loss, not happy with all the complications and having 7 gastroscopies, 5 barium swallows, 3 dilatations and 2 extra surgeries. My goal weight would be 150 pounds Sorry for such a long post, but it would be great to hear from anyone who has had complications with the sleeve - strictures, torsion, leaks, conversion to bypass etc. It would be great to have some support as it's been quite a whirlwind for me. Thanks so much :-) -
Anyone else have a sleeve revision to bypass due to complications?

My surgeon was concerned that I was dehydrated, malnourished and losing too much weight so she converted me to a gastric bypass. Gastric sleeve surgery was on 16 November 2015. I had it in private with a lovely surgeon and support team. So after my surgery I was pretty much vomiting up after my puree meals. When I first received the bariatric meals at the hospital, I was shocked as the amount of food for one meal was far more than I had been eating in a whole day!! I think the main fear is being isolated - being unable to eat with my family/friends and being left out of social occasions involving food. I'm a private person so only my close family know about the surgery. I know it will get better eventually, but it's really sad. My first bm was at 7 days post. I'd call and ask your team if it's been more than that. Mine (tmi ahead) felt like a weird fart, so I went to the toilet and it was a tiny bit of blackish diarrhea. After that I went again and it was more. The next day I had one bad diarrhea, and today it stopped being blackish. The foam could also be from gas in your system, combined with drinking too quickly or too much. I had a lot of hiccups (ow) and burping my first few days. Gas-X strips have been wonderful for reducing the gurgling rom my gut. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

I'm 3 days post-op and have a couple of questions. 1. What's with this frothy foamy stuff coming up from my stomach? Does it mean I'm drinking too much, not enough, or just something that happens? 2. How long did you guys wait before taking a laxative? I don't feel like I'm constipated and have been passing gas. (TMI, sorry) But I'm afraid to let it go too long and also afraid to put a laxative into my poor abused GI tract right now. And advice? Thanks!

I posted this in wrong forum, my bad, but wanted to share with fellow sleevers for advice. ., Hello, almost week 4 post-op. Have been off and on but mostly "regular" enough. But after, let's just say an event, where I weighed myself because at day 3 of having not gone I thought, "that MUST be a pound lost!" (No such luck btw). I thought I cannot do that again, I mean I have not given birth but that must have been close. So not to get too detailed (fleet). Let's talk prevention. Anyone doing the Fiber mix that you can supposedly mix in Water with no taste? How are they are non-fiber carbs? Thanks!
