    SO MANY QUESTIONS

    Question 1- I struggled. There was a time right at the beginning of the pandemic (1st surgery was Dec 2019) where all I could drink besides hot tea was grape powderade zero (hated artificial grape pre-op) and everywhere was out. I distinctly remember crying in my car, like full on grief crying. I had buyers remorse for several weeks after that wondering if I’d ever be normal again. Be prepared with emotional/ therapeutic support if you’re already battling disordered eating. Question 2- A dry cough is indeed a symptom of gerd. For me, it’s now hiccups. If you’ve ever heard those honking plastic chickens just know that’s what I sound like. I did end up having a revision to RNY and hiatal hernia repair. They don’t remove your stomach, it’s still in there, they just bypass most of it and attach it in a y shape to another part of the intestines while keeping a small portion attached. The only reason I have hiccups again is because I have another hiatal hernia that needs repaired. Would I do it all over again knowing the journey I’ve been on? Absolutely. Would I also be more prepared mentally? Also, absolutely.

    Some of the restaurants I’ve gone to have kids meals but they have an age limit on them. FOR KIDS UNDER 10 for example.
  4. I am 25 weeks pregnant and was recently diagnosed with silent reflux. The ENT doc put me on Pepcid but it has not helped much. It only started when I became pregnant. I was sleeved in 2019. I had the exact lump in my throat even called 911 several times for feeling like I couldn’t breath until it was finally diagnosed. I feel for you. I hope things get better.

    Over 50 sleevers

    Menopause is what did me in too. I went from my usual lifelong range of 60-75kgs to suddenly being 91kg. It was like I woke up one day & there was the weight. Tried to unsuccessfully move it for a couple of years & decided surgery was my only option. I’m almost 58 & still have menopausal symptoms even on HRT. (Actually the estrogen flush we have while we’re losing actually stopped my menopausal symptoms. They came back once I got to goal though. ☹️) So losing your weight & maintaining is still possible. Don’t worry too much about doing ‘enough’ exercise. It only contributes to about 10% of your weight loss & I didn’t do any formal exercise while I was losing. Just was more active in my everyday life. Like stairs not lifts or escalators, park further away from where you’re going, make multiple trips up & down my stairs instead of only one or two trips, etc. Of course there are lots of other benefits to being active. I too found tea easiest to drink. I still have a large mug (about 400ml) of green tea every day. You’ll get your fluid up. Try drinking during the night as well. Sip every time you get up to pee. I still do this to push me up & over my goal. Looks like you’ve got a good handle on your protein so we’ll done. And congrats with your weight loss so far too.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

    So I had my surgery on Monday (3 days ago) and I have like no real pain. I totally had planned for this to be worse. Im sure it is different for everyone but have other people felt this way? Like right now i can pretty much do everything I did before the surgery. Im intentionally not lifting anything over 10 pounds but outside of that im still cleaning house and walking miles every day. Yesterday I did it twice. Anyone else have this happen?
  7. @Tomo Hello! I won't know what procedure or if I'll need one until my surgeon gets the results of the labs he's requested. The upper GI single w/contrast will determine if my pouch is stretched or if there are fistulas in the path to the remnant stomach. Now if everything looks fine then I'll need to review my eating habits with my nutritionist and map out a new way to reset. It's great that after 10 years your aunts pouch is still small. Hopefully she will find a way regain control of her snacking habits. It's not easy, but it is possible.
  8. It's great you have your pcp psychiatrist support. There are a few different type of RNY revision. What procedure are having? Did you stretch your pouch? The reason I'm asking is because my aunt regained all her weight back and more after 10 years post RNY. She had it evaluated and her pouch was still tiny and didn't stretch. She had learned to eat around it, and drank with her meals too, hence they didn't want to do a revision. They told her she would lose 10 to 15% max and it wouldn't be worth it especially since her health isn't very good. I am still going hoping she can get the help she needs because all her comorbities have come back. I have tried to help her go back to basics but unfortunately she can't stop snacking. She is seeing a doctor and psychiatrist to help her.
  9. Most people do. I'm a week (8 days, 10 counting before my surgery )post op. So I've been on liquid for the same amount of time. You're going to do fine. Focus more on the life change aspects. Easier said than done ik. But all this coming from a ex food addict. 🫂❤️❤️❤️

    Gaining weight

    I wondered about the steroids too as they can increase your appetite. People I know say they make them crave carbs or sugar. I also agree with focussing on your diet. Exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight you want to lose but also makes you hungry. Of course there are lots of other benefits to exercising but don’t rely on it for weight loss. Reduce sugars (real & artificial), reduce fats, reduce carbs, reduce high processed foods, increase protein, increase vegetables, get your fluid intake up to 64ozs (try for more water than other fluids), introduce more low or no processed foods & watch portion sizes. All good new habits to start. You may find it easier to start adopting only one or two of these at a time.
  12. I had the roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery in 2018. My beginning weight was 290 and in less than a year I was down 100 lbs. I got pregnant at the end of 2019. I gained 30 lbs during that time and lost it all after 2 months of breast feeding. I breast fed until my son was 11 months and he was ON DEMAND. I had to increase my intake to produce more milk. I now have gained over 70 lbs since I stopped and tried intermittent fasting, Golo, high protein low carbs and nothing has worked. I go to my bariatric surgeon tomorrow and hope to get a green light on a revision as I know my pouch has increased in size as I can eat more than I used to. My energy level is at a 2 and I'm burnt out with my soon to be 3 yr old who is full of energy. I was on no medication after my surgery and now I'm taking 6 different prescriptions daily and its wearing me down mentally as well. My PCP and Psychiatrist are supportive as long as my bariatric surgeon is as well. I pray this goes well tomorrow. I hope to return with good news.

    Gaining weight

    Remember that no amount of exercise can outdo a bad diet, so definitely focus on your diet vs exercise, and try not to worry about not exercising right now, especially if you are having issues. As soon as I was getting close to getting a date, I started cutting waaaay back on carbs, and drinking more protein shakes and eating greek yogurt, to get myself used to it, since I would be eating that stuff for a while pre and post surgery. I didn't really exercise and ended up losing over 10 lbs on my own before surgery. Good luck!

    Complex Health Issues & Physical Limitations

    I didn't really have any health issues, but I'm also a "senior" - there are lots of us on here who've had surgery in our 50s, 60s, and even a few in their 70s. not being able to exercise much shouldn't be an issue. Weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise (exercise has a greater effect during maintenance, though (once you reach your goal weight) - but then, you can only do what you can do. But for losing weight, no - it doesn't play a major role). I've "known" several people on bariatric forums who rarely if ever exercised, and they still lost a ton of weight.
  15. Hi everyone. I appreciate learning from your shared experiences. I'm a 62-year-young grandma with a zest for life. I joined here 2+ years ago, but initially ruled out WLS. Over the past two years my health has declined surprisingly, becoming complex with several new diagnoses, including: 1. A rare and progressive neurological disorder (misdiagnosed for years). - I'm told my nerve fibers will not replenish, thus my muscles (legs, especially) will continue to weaken. I'm also told I should be realistic about my physical limitations as my level of exercise isn't expected to improve post surgery. I am realistic, but I'm always hopeful. My exercise level currently consists of short distance walking (1-3 blocks) every other day as tolerated and on opposite days 10 minutes on a recumbent cross-trainer (NuStep). 2. Autoimmune issues have been resistant to stronger meds intended to cut inflammation, which also progresses my neurological disorder. 3. It was the diagnosis of liver disease (fibrosis stage 3) in January that led me to move forward with WLS. I am scheduled for the sleeve in late July. Can any of you relate to having similar health issues with WLS, especially nearing the golden years? Or did less-than-optimal exercise levels hinder weight loss (losing less than expected)? I'm praying the surgery will jolt my nerves to replenish at least somewhat and exceed expectations. We'll see. Thanks for your time! (Feel free to message me privately.)

    Hello!

    Hello! I am new here, so I am still finding my way. I had weight gain his me over the past 10+ yrs. like it came on overnight. And I've tried and tried to diet but I always fall back-to-back habits. I had an eye-opening moment where I thought to myself, "You don't really see a lot of overweight elderly people" and that thought hit me hard. I am 40 and much too young to feel this old! My joints ache, my ankles swell, my back hurts, I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, GERD and anxiety out the wazoo. I am nowhere near ready to die, and I sort of had a "come to Jesus" moment with myself and knew I had to get serious about my weight and health. I have so much to live for and I don't plan on going anywhere any time soon!! I am a mother to a wonderful adult son. I have an amazing boyfriend and a family whom I love dearly. I love my job and have so many blessings that I don't want to take for granted. I keep telling myself "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels", and I know that has to be true. I have one more appointment with my PCP before I can be submitted for insurance approval, and then hopefully a surgery date!

    Hi!  Sometime during the 10 weeks of options classes you’ll get a consultation appointment with a surgeon. I’ve heard that SoCal Kaiser is 2-3 months out with scheduling surgeries (if your surgeon doesn’t have any other requirements for you). I’ve also heard that Kaiser will give you up to one year to schedule your procedure before they’ll make you go thru the 10 weeks of Options classes again.

    I think there's some difference between sleeve and bypass on that front isn't there? OP - I have also had a sleeve procedure and 19 months on am totally loving it. I wish you all the luck in the world!

    Wow lucky you D&S!! We've been together on our weight loss journey for the last 19 months. I can't afford any tidying up procedures but I'm so happy that you can! I hope everything goes smoothly for you. Please may we have some before and after photos?? Lots of folks here will be able to give you proper advice.
  22. I have an aversion to them too! I tried them again ~1 month ago (I'm 10 weeks post RNY) and gagged and threw it out along with the shaker bottle! I've tried multiple kinds. I was able to make broths/soups work for awhile, but can't even stomach those now! Good luck to you!
  23. Hello all, I'm 10 weeks out from RNY and overall doing pretty good. My problem is I can't plan my food menu because one day I'll like a food, like eggs, and the next day it repulses me. Can't stand the smell of it. I'm like this with almost everything I'm eating. I can NOT do shakes ever again. I tried again about a month ago and gagged and threw it out along with the damn shaker bottle. Same with soups and broths. Can't even look at them. ONe day I'll do good with chicken and the next it sickens me. I'm often hungry, but eating makes me feel like crap. I enjoy nothing. I eat slow and don't eat until I am too full, so it's not like I'm overeating and getting sick from a food and then not wanting to eat it again. It makes me sad. Frustrating as hell. I'm hungry now, but nothing sounds good, looks good or tastes good. I often feel crappy after eating. Nauseated. Again, not eating until I'm too full, so it doesn't make sense to me. My dietician wants me to get in more protein but I can't figure out how. There is a part of me that wishes I never would've had the surgery because I'm so sick of feeling like crap. I have low/no energy. I'm taking all my vitamins and supplements. Anyone else have this problem? Will it get better over time? I have no idea what I'll take to work for lunch tomorrow. The chicken I made yesterday is grossing me out now. UGH!! Advice? I'm 34 pounds down now. I'm stalled but feel like it's because I'm not eating enough. I cannot do yogurt or much cheese as I have a hard time with milk products as well. Ack! One more thing I'll add is that I found I can't tolerate sugar free things either. I don't know if it's the xylitol, artificial sweeteners or what. Not eating sugary things either.
  24. Hi all, Im 37 and injust got my MGB revision 20 days ago. I was sleeved 10 years ago and never reached my goal weight. After babies and hormonal BC i gained a lot back. I feel surprised now tho. I feel i havent loose much these days. I just started Phase 3 and where i live (Middle east) is very hard to find sugar free, fat free products and im wondering if is the greek yogurt (flavored) and the protein drink the ones that arent helping. Both say they dont have added sugar but have sugars at the end. Also i dont feel there is really a restriction in my stomach. Im still hungry, i can eat half cup of food, i can drink a whole glass of water with no issues... such a different experience than the sleeve. Im scared of failure. Im passing very light yellow stools i dont know why and is so painful. Sometimes i wonder if there was a surgery after all. Any ideas of why this weight loss is so slow?
  25. Roasted eggplant 1/2c (18cal) wraps (50g lettuce = 8 cal) with homemade salsa (10 cal). Low calorie, but filling, dinner. I ate 4 mini samosas at lunch [emoji24] so I ran out of calories lol.
