  1. Hello. My name is Shannon (moeandez1) and I am 29 years old and I currently weigh about 280 pounds. I have struggled with my weight most of my life but didn't start having major problems until after high school. I had a sudden weight gain of a hundred pounds in one year and since then it's got worse. It took over ten years of problems..thinning hair, no periods, weight gain...until I was FINALLY diagnosed with PCOS in about 2009. Unfortunately I have only been diagnosed and not treated. In 2008 I started having issues with feeling like I had a flu all the time. If someone touched me I would yelp. It hurt so much. Eventually my pain got worse and worse and early last year I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have been off work for about a year now. I am still in the process of trying to get the pain under control and finding the right medication. My weight keeps going up and up. I have recently started having issues with low blood sugar but haven't been treated for that either. I've tried a number of very expensive diets and I have been semi successful but then I end up gaining all my weight plus some back. I have made a decision to go with the lap band. I don't want my health getting worse and I really want to go back to work. Unfortunately in BC, the lap band is not covered and any other surgery is about a five year wait. I cant' afford this but I can't afford not to. My husband loves me the way I am but knows that I am unhappy. I have become very reclusive because of my weight and RA and I don't want to live like this anymore. I have my surgery date...June 27th! I am so excited but at the same time I am so scared. I spend time every day reading about the band. I have read a number of peoples blogs and for some reason every link I clicked on in the past day or so has been a negative experience with the band...I have to admit, it doesn't raise my confidence...therefore, encouraging words are defninitely welcome! lol. My husband and dad are super supportive and know this means a lot to me but the few friends I told have accused me of taking the easy way out and told me it's a dumb idea. Of course, all those people are within a normal BMI and have never had a weight problem in their life. I l love hearing about other peoples experiences and would love to hear from people who have had the surgery done or are waiting to have it done. Are you as nervous as I am? hehe.
  2. I see this has been here for an hour since posted with no comments from the ladies, so I thought I would throw my 2 cents in. Of course, I did not have a hysterectomy, but we all have our reasons for getting the surgery. Weight gain after any surgery is just one of them. Does it really matter if it was after hysterectomy, knee replacement, spinal fusion, _____ ... fill in the blank. I would guess, like me, the surgery for 99% of us has been a fabulous, life saving procedure. If you have tried conventional methods (notice plural) of losing weight and have struggled, it doesn't really matter. I can come up with about 6 reasons why I was morbidly obese, but it all circles back to my poor relationship with food. Good luck with your research and keep coming back!
  3. Hello All, My name is Asmaa, I am 40 years old, married, mother of 3 daughters, age 19, 12, and 10. I currently live in Philadelphia but am originally from DC/NoVA. I have been on my weight loss journey for 19 years, right after I had my first child. I was always pretty slim growing up and only picked up weight after having kids. Over the last 10 years my weight has skyrocketed and before I knew it I was 328 pounds. It wasn't until I saw myself in a family picture that I realized how big I had gotten. Along with they weight gain I suffer from high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I am being treated medically for the HBP and have to sleep with a C-PAP mask for the apnea I have lower back problems and I plantar fasciitis. I have been on every fad diet that anyone could mention, the weight drops but then it comes right back. I had considered weight loss surgery years ago but I felt that I was cheating and taking the easy way out. I felt that I could do i t on my own, and I did. I lost 80lbs by changing my eating habits and exercising. Then I injured my knee and had to have surgery. This slowed down my exercise routine and I returned to disordered eating and the weight came back. I exercise 3-5 times a week but it hasn't been enough. I needed a change and so I decided to look into weight loss surgery. After attending the information session, I felt confident that this option was right for me at this time in my life. The surgeons and staff are terrific. They are very kind and compassionate and care about each and every patient that they treat. And as the months have gone by in preparation for the surgery, I grow even more confident that this is the best choice in my journey. So with that being said...... My vertical sleeve surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday, October 14. I am so happy to be beginning my journey to weight loss and a more permanent healthy state. Well that's my intro, I look forward to getting to know everyone!

    Contemplating sleeve surgery

I am 6 months out, so as the others said, I can't speak for the weight gain in the long term, but as with any weight loss surgery, there is still a lot of work involved with exercise and making good choices. You could easily put the weight back on, I'm sure, if you don't stick to a high Protein low carb diet. At this point, I still can't eat more than a 1/2 cup of food at a time and I was told by a year I would be able to eat a cup, so the stomach stretches but that is not anywhere near the capacity I had before surgery! As for the Vitamin deficiency, I take a Multivitamin and vit d with Calcium once a day and my labs have been perfect every two months since I had the surgery.

    Honest questions

Thank you all for your very kind and helpful words of absolute wisdom. I know what you to say to be true and sound. I had some of the Pintos and cheese from Taco Bell last nite, and tonight I had some green Beans in cream of mushroom Soup. I had vegtable soup (Broth) for lunch. I am walking. I can not do the protien drinks. YUCK I am drinking as much Water as I can, with is 1 16oz bottle a day. I am not a coffee drinker, and had a 6oz cup of decaf this morning to settle my stomach. I know I need to work on more, and wise choices. I know I am going to have to deal with the hit of weight gain too. Every reward is worth the journey and lessons learned to earn it. Thank you again for being there for me. I am honestly greatful for your replies.

MelAnne...tsk tsk tsk!!! You are having way too much time on your hands!! When do you go back to work!! LOL First of all....grrrrr....count your blessings....after my first week of clear fluids, I have to do TWO weeks of "full fluids" followed by TWO Weekies of mushies before I can even consider solids. But, I think in the long run that will be too my advantage!! You are doing fine....I agree with Janet, we'll have to take the weight gain hit at some point...knowing that it is just a step in the long journey of when it WILL come off and STAY off!!! )
  7. I'm having surgery next Monday (4/11) with Dr. Almanza. I know that if my lap-band is eroded that he won't do the sleeve. So what are the symptoms of an eroded band? I am super nervous because I will be driving all the way from Arkansas to San Diego to do the surgery. I don't want to get down there and be super disappointed because I can't have the sleeve done... I have had weight regain in the past few months. I have regained about 35 lbs in 3 months! It started when I went in for a fill and the doctor dug around and dug around before taking me to x-ray to see why he couldn't access my port. He informed me it was turned around backwards and he sent me home. That was on a Friday. By Sunday I realized I could eat absolutely anything and everything in huge amounts. I've also had minor port pain ever since this happened. So can anyone tell me what might have happened? Could this weight gain be erosion or did my dr do something?

    Lapband Vs Sleeve

It begins with YOU, and only You. What you put in your mouth must be quality food items and Not junk or high carbed items. More Protein items, less carbs and YOU will lost weight. Give it some time. Not everybody here loses weight instantly. Your weight gain took years to develop and now you must have patience in obtaining your ideal weight goal. Best wishes and Keep the Faith.
  9. Hello everyone, I am a newbie to the site but am post op three years in September. My starting weight was 370lbs and 8 weeks ago I was 282lbs. I was thrilled but really struggling to eat. Something was blocking and I was choking at night while sleeping. Pretty scary to be woken up out of your sleep because you are choking on your own saliva. Anyway I went to the doctor and they immediatly emptied me out. It was such an incredble feeling to not have any restriction. They wanted me to be empty for a week or two to make sure I was ok. But I was supposed to still be careful with my food intake. Well I went haywire right away eating everything I have not been able to eat for the last two years.(pasta, bread and fast food). I did not go back to the doctor for three weeks and in that time I gained twenty pounds. They gave me a partial fill and told me to come back in a month or so depending on how I was feeling. Well it is a month later and I am dreading going back. I have gained another twenty pounds. I put on almost half the weight I fought to lose in just two months!! The worst part is I am so upset with myself, my cloths don't fit me, I threw out all my "fat" clothes and refuse to buy a larger size yet I cannot stop myself from eating. I now know what it feels like to be a drug addict. I am eating secretivly in my car figuring if nobody sees maybe I won't gain any weight. I am in a real bad place right now and need help. I am so glad I found this site, I believe it is a step in the right direction. So upsetting the jeans that were falling off of me 8 weeks ago I struggled to button this morning. I just hope I can get back on track. I know I have to go in for another adjustment but I am so embarressed by my weight gain I am afraid to face the doctors. So Sad JimmyXXL
  10. I am about a month and a halg post op and I have only been weighing myself once a week. Today when I stepped on the scale, I gained 5lbs. Is it normal to gain?
  11. I was banded on 6/17 and lost a total of 21 lbs from pre op diet to 1 week after surgery. I am 4 weeks post op and have noticed a 2 lb weight gain in the past 2 weeks. Why is this? I gained weight moving from liquid phase to mushie phase. It's Frustrating! When do I really start losing?
  12. Hello All, I would really love to connect with anyoneout there willing to share about how to manage this lifestyle change and avoid weight gain long term. I was banded back in 2008, lost all my weight...over 140 pounds and recently gained back over 20 pounds. As you might imagaine I am in a bit of a panic and wonder why I have found myself reverting back to bad foods and bad habits. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has overcome anything like this. I really need some support and would appreciate any and all thoughts....thanks in advance for helping me out of this situation. AzRobyn.

    Pregnancy Post-op

Thanks for your thoughts! I am def planning to wait at least 12 months. I do want to optimize my weight loss before getting pregnant as much as I can. I do worry about weight gain with pregnancy, but I plan to work closely with a nutrionist to ensure the baby is getting what he or she needs and try not to stress too much about my weight.
  14. I am talking about the stomach (organ) not the exterior (waistline). To answer the other question re: 2 gallons of Water, yes I mix Chrystal Light in a half a gallon of water and carry it with me and have 4 of them a day = 2 gallons. But I've always been this way, even before I went on methyprednisone for 3.5 years which caused the weight gain to begin with. Please, I am just looking for input and not criticism. I suppose I feel I must hide this from my surgeon because I do not want to be a "bad patient." I do now see the flaws in my hiding this from my surgeon. I am good at asking for help and honestly taking seriously advise especially when there is a general consensus answer. Thank you for the nonjudgmental responses.
  15. Augh... I was on vacation and I came in contact with something I was allergic to. My legs swelled and I had a very nasty angry looking rash. The local er gave me prednisone. Normally I would not take it because I get really bad mood and eating issues even taking small doses. However the swelling pain and itch was intolerable. So my weight is up which is frustrating because in 3 weeks I have my final weight in. I was told from month to month i had to maintain or lose. I'm down 15 total but so far have 3 pound weight gain since starting this medicine. I'm retaining Water and other parts of my body are swollen. I'm drinking a lot of water but the return is not where I think it should be.Any tips on getting this weight back down? I have 6 more days of the prednisone to go. (I have dropped an email to my doctors on this but I would like to hear if any one has had a similar experience) Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App
  16. I think as long as you stick to your eating plan and let them know ASAP about the prednisone and weight gain, they will completely understand. This is out of your control. I'm sure you will be fine Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Filled too much?

Thanks to all of you. It is VERY nice to hear I am not such an exception! I read these boards often and no one seems to have the problems I am having. Even my doctor says my case is somewhat unique to her. I know a few people personally who have gone through being banded. A couple successful and a couple not so much but none of them had my kind of problems. 1 year and 3 months into this and I am FINALLY getting restriction!! The unfill did help A LOT!! I am still able to eat what I feel is just enough. The scale is starting to go down too!! Let this be a lesson to you. DO NOT LIVE WITH THE BAND IF IT IS TOO TIGHT BECAUSE YOU ARE AFRAID IT WILL RESULT IN WEIGHT GAIN!!!! It can mean the difference between misery and your green spot!! Bonnie, Cassie and Sara I hope it all works out for you in the end! (Knock on wood) I am doing REALLY WELL with this NOW!! LOL
  18. Officially freaking out...surgery is tomorrow morning!!! I’ve been trying to get ready and have most of what I need at home. Ventured out to GNC today to look for isopure (read it’s good during pos-op liquid diet) and wanted to look at some protein powder. I am really worried about getting my protein in and it is all very overwhelming. Interestingly, while I was trying to look at all the options, a couple with a baby came in and I overheard their convo (very small store). The lady explained that she’s always had trouble gaining weight and once she got pregnant and had her daughter (super cute btw [emoji846]) she thought her ability to gain weight would get better but it actually got worse. So the husband cut her off and said they needed a weight gain protein powder and basically after that, the conversation ended up being between the GNC employee and the husband. He wanted whatever had the most and best chance and it didn’t matter how much she had to drink in a day, even though she kept telling him that she would not be able to drink that much. To top it all off, he ended up choosing her flavor and a mix cup (even though she said she didn’t like the color). Sharing bc I was put off by the husbands attitude and felt bad for her. I could be completely wrong here but wouldn’t surprise me if he gets on her about her weight, maybe about not eating enough, her appearance, etc. Most of us are on the other side of that spectrum but it made me realize that we might be going through the same things in terms of insecurities and it was eye-opening. Because I am overweight, I sometimes look at skinny people and feel jealous but didn’t really think about any struggles they might have. Thought I’d share. Anywho! Lol. They left with a giant tub of protein powder and I left with nothing! Lol. I was so overwhelmed with the choices I couldn’t make a decision. So asking for a friend [emoji3] I hope you guys can give me some recommendations of what you’re using. I worry about fat and calorie content and maybe how often you’re using the powder.....and do I really need it?? Thank you!!!!

    Unfill Question

well my doc doesnt advocate the liquid diet after fills, he just says to be careful, so no, I didnt do a liquid diet at all after my recent .2ml unfill. But I found it to be like a fill. Small immediate effect, then about a week later, I noticed how much easier it was to eat, how much hungrier I was and how many more really healthy foods (as opposed to sliders) I could eat. None of which led to weight gain thank goodness. I dont know why I got so tight, one of those things I guess. PMT, plane flight etc all happening round the same time.

3 Weeks Post Op And Starting To Gain Weight

im 2 weeks out and have seen this.. i gained 2 lbs and freaked out. im told this is normal... as mentioned before.. im very careful now.. because since the swelling has gone down i get hungrier faster and again told this is normal.. i was afraid to eat between meals but did talkt o my nutritionist about it and she recomended i have a yogurt.. or pull my meals slightly closer together.. weight gain is normal because your body is just getting used to having food in it again after going thru the liquids.. your body thinks its not going to get anything so its storing everything you put into it. watch your carb intake and try to stay away from sugar. keep up with ur workout plana nd you will be successful.

    Almost giving up! HELP!

Fiqah87 I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through. I have a friend that went through the same thing you are talking about. She got depressed from being sick all the time and just gave up. Now she is only about 50 away from where she started and she is really depressed. But also, come to find out, she quit taking her recommended medicine and Vitamins and she also started back with bad eating habits. Now she is at the realization that she got too comfortable and started eating the way she used to eat because she had lost so much weight and then due to the rapid weight gain, she started staying then she was so sick that she couldn't eat. I pray things get better for you. Good luck Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. Hi Celialou, The advantage you have is that you are young, and by getting banded you will avoid any possible problems that might pop up as you get older, not to mention the possibility of more weight gain. As someone told me when I first joined this site, it's better to have the risks with the band, than the ones you might have without it. I am not where I'd hoped to be but I have been taken off a couple of blood pressure medications, and have more energy than I have for a long time, not to mention all the things I can do that I couldn't preband. Please keep us posted. I hope you go through with it, and as others have said, you may look back on this in six months and be as happy as so many of us are. Good luck! Debbie
  23. So far I have had good luck in revision due to weight gain. starting weight for sleeve 254 3 months out 204.5 weight loss of 50.5 ——————————— starting weight for bypass 245.5 3 months out I weigh 199 today (wooo!) weight loss 46.5 So the weight loss has been about the same but it has felt easier. I’m very glad I did the second surgery.

    Im Pregnant!!!

Many congrats on the pregnancy ! ! ! The main issues is that you can NOT continue to eat low carb. Ketosis causes fetal brain damage so GO EAT A SANDWICH, if you are still low carbing it. Honestly, VSG has not complicated my pregnancy. The biggest challenge has been the inevitable weight gain, but you might not have as much as I have. I've gained a solid 20lbs at 29 weeks pregnant and even though that is perfectly on target, it's mindbending for me to gain weight. I have struggled with the physical changes, my ever expanding belly, and the fact that I'm 34 doesn't help! This is also my 2nd pregnancy, and higher numbers on the scale are expected with a 2nd pregnancy. So, my recommendation is to get to your ob, you shouldn't have to take any additional Vitamins, but make sure they monitor your B12 and Folate on a regular basis. If you aren't taking anything, start now. Folic acid and B12, Iron are the ones we need the most. My labs have remained stellar through my pregnancy. All you'll need is a prenatal with a sublingual b12. If you have worked out through your journey, keep working out. I admittedly didn't work out, and haven't in the pregnancy. I know that has contributed to my weight gain. Depending on your starting pregnancy weight, will determine your pregnancy calorie/protein/carb goals. I'm to eat 1700-1800 calories, 100gr of Protein 100gr of carbs, and 100oz of clear fluids per day. Yes, it's challenging, and I drink some calorie-filled drinks because I simply can not eat all my calories. Grape juice helps tremendously. Again, many congrats, and if you need anything, feel free to shoot me a message!

    A small NSV :)

Your doc may be right about 140 being a bit too small. I am small-boned. Even at my heaviest I had to have links taken out of my watches and bracelets to fit my wrist. I wear a size 6 or 6 1/2 shoe. My feet have always been narrow so the only good thing that came out of all my weight gain was that my foot got wider and I could pretty much wear any style I wanted. Now I'm back to narrow sizes so I am limited to shoes that buckle around the ankle, lace up or just run narrow. But if that's the only bad thing to come out of this surgery, I'm OK with that.
