  1. Can you be successful losing weight with the lapband if you have difficulty moving? I have fairly significant arthritis in my knees and find walking somewhat difficult. Obviously, losing weight may relieve some of the pain, but since I've had knee problems since I was a slender teen, I'm not expecting it to resolve completely. Since I've been sedentary for so long, my plan is to start doing physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around my knees, and simultaneously begin a more general weight lifting program to increase my general strength. I'm hoping after a few weeks of this I'll be strong enough to start walking short distances. What I have to avoid is injury - the last time I injured my knee I managed to gain another 50 lb :-( I'd love to spend time in a pool, but the nearest one is 45 minutes away and doesn't have childcare... So do you think I can be successful with this plan? Have any of you had similar experiences? Any suggestions or comments are appreciated. Thanks - Alyson
  2. As my Mom used to say, " Penny, you are borrowing trouble." I keep wondering all the "what if's" What if something in my lab isn't 100 percent , what if I'm pregnant. HELLO i'm 45 and had a hysterectomy.. See told ya I was borrowing trouble.. SO.. I came here to find out what in the labs would keep them from doing surgery.. just so that I know the information.. I'm not sick, pregnant, or anything else that I would think would cause complications.. Just wondering and worrying, cause that is what I do best.. I know everything is fine.. I just can't stop it.. I try to distract me.. I'm building me a farm on farmtown via facebook. LOL but the crops are growing so slow and I just keep coming back and reading and going to the other board and reading. I am just trying to gain and process all the informationn that I can find right now.. I guess i'm 'venting;.. just can't seem to concentrate on anything besides getting everything together for the surgery.. I"m so ready for the July 29th to get here.. Thanks for letting me talk Hugz, Penny~

    Virtual Lap Band via hypnosis?

I suppose it was to be expected sooner or later. While I'm certainly not opposed to hypnosis per se, my own personal exposure to a 10 week session of it circa 1973 for weight issues, was ineffective.

    Working Out Again

You go girl!!!! Keep it up, I'm right there with you. I started lifting hand weights yesterday. Since moving I have been running up and down the stairs. I actually layed sod (fake grass) Saturday and I still feel it today and the back of my thighs. I consider every little bit calorie burning exercise. Come on girl let's get this right.

    First Nutrition Counseling Session

Hey girl, I will be your buddy. Everyone needs someone to talk to about this overwhelming process. I haven't been perfect pre-op. But I am not beating myself up about it. If I try to make every change overnight I will be right back where I started. This is a lifestyle change. I am focusing on portion control. I can't spend to much time focusing on what I can't have. That will drive me crazy. If someone has chips and I have a taste, I eat it. But I stop at one. Get the feeling out. I have even had an ice cream cone. A one time decision isn't why I gained all this weight. It is eating junk every day, every meal, and not moving at all. I am learning every day. I will get better and stronger and by surgery time, I will have so much information gathered and incorporated, I will find my own success. My weight loss goals have less to do with actual pounds and more about my knees not hurting anymore. Being able to walk up and down stairs regularly. I want to fit in my clothes. I want to go out dancing. I want to feel better in my skin. I want to take less medication. Hopefully none at all. In the end, I plan to define my success. I have a picture of myself from several years ago. I wasn't small by any means, but my smile was a little brighter. When I get there, I will define that as success. When I can fit in a certain pair of jeans, that's success. When I can wear my favorite heels without pain, that will be success. We are taking a huge step in the fight for our lives. However, we get there we have to be proud of making the effort. Some people never get the courage. L.

    First Nutrition Counseling Session

I am due for my third visit. This month I slid back into old habits. My Nut basically wants me to learn to be better at habits and behaviors that will aide me in my journey to lose and keep off the weight. I was great the first month, wearing my BodyMedia Fit Link armband, using MyFitnessPal app to log all my foods and calories. Then a week before my May appointment I quit doing my logging, and then also haven't started up again until this week. I had a f/u visit with my psych doc who did the eval and placed me on some medication. I expected to discuss my issues with her that day but she just asked some simple questions and doubled my dosage and sent me out the door, it happened so fast I didn't think to ask about therapy actually occurring. I need to make sure she has me in for a session not just med management for this next appointment. I got my chest xray done and my abdominal ultrasound done. I need my upper GI test done, some labs, finish the nut supervised 6 months diet and then I can submit. I hope to submit for approval in late September/early October. I am not losing weight yet. I need to seek out support groups. That is pretty lacking. I also think I need to attend some Overeaters Anonymous groups. My husband has been out of state all month and he is such a good support to me for exercising and getting out to do things. And watching my diet. I didn't realize what a big help he is for that until he was gone. I feel really down about going right back to old habits, I feel like I am failing myself and if I can't do this 20-30 pound weight loss prior to surgery how can I expect myself to be successful post surgery??? sighs... I am trying to get back on the wagon of logging calories and exercising. Anyone want to help me and be a support buddy hit me up!

He sounds like a jerk. That said....if he wants to eat crap, he can. You can't make him cook if he doesn't want to. His body. Let him kill himself with garbage. No skin off your nose...so don't worry about it. No, it's not very supportive to eat crap in front of you....but it doesn't sound like he worries much about how you feel. By the way...if you're 4 days post op and have a headache, a cough and chest pain...why in the hell isn't he taking you to urgent care immediately? Because he doesn't care. That's why. Learn from this. Lose weight and find someone who actually cares about you. Life is too short to play martyr.

    Decaf Coffee

I have a cup of decaf every morning and flavor it with Coffeemate's sugar free french vanilla powder (not the liquid one). YUMMY!! My surgery was on Monday, March 16th and I've had absolutely no complications and losing weight steadily.
  11. If you never really followed the rules then it would make sense that you're gaining. Weight loss is really basic math, if you burn more calories than you consume you lose. I would be willing to bet your calories have slowly crept up and now the weight is catching up with you again. I would start tracking your calories to see how much you're actually consuming. This way you will know for certain where you need to make changes. Best wishes!
  12. I'm so happy that I found this place.....wahoo. I am 10 day to my revision From lab band to sips. So here's my story an I'm stickin to it lol. In 2005 I got my LB. My HW ever was 340 SW 270 LW 215 My CW 232 Because I've been on my per-OP for a week. Last week was 247.8 My first yr out I got to 215 My band was awesome.I had hit the sweet spot an life was amazing. Then in 2017 I got rear ended at a stop light an it broke my neck in 5 places an my back in two. Plus it tweaked my LB. I had to have it emptied. Never found my sweet spot again. [emoji26] My weight has bounced all over the place for the last 14 yrs. So I started doing research an decided I needed something with malabsorption. Cuz I really cant eat that much for the pass 8 yrs I have been at 236ish. I am very grateful for my LB. It has helped me to never see 340 again. But alas I must move on an get rid of the last 100lbs. Two Years Out

hi all. Well, its coming up two years since i was banded. ive lost about 35 lbs… the last four months ive not had much weight loss. Ive been having issues with heart burn .. really bad. I put up with it for so long hoping that i could manage it myself without losing any fill. but, after nights of sitting up in bed afraid to sleep because of the problem, i knew i had to go back and get some fill taken out. I was weighed and had lost about 2.2 lbs over that time, at least i hadn't gained. another problem that was developing was the fact i was turning to foods that i shouldn't have been eating, foods that were easier to digest… like mashed potato, cream, Pasta, not good. I knew i had to do something. anyway, i had about a 1/4 CC taken out on wednesday. My stomach is still a bit touchy but nowhere near as bad. AT least now i can sit and eat something without the pain. Even through all this I'm so pleased i had banding done. My eating habits most likely would never have changed without the band putting limits on me. Im the sort of personality that finds discipline very hard unless i have a powerful motivator. I certainly have it now. lol. With summer coming our way (Aust) I'm looking forward to more salad greens than before. i was really concerned because i wasn't getting the nutrition that i needed. Now i have a better chance of a rounded diet… just a lot less than i used to eat. whats happening out there with those of you who have been banded about two years? Have you had issues like me? judych

Protein, carbs, water - Oh My!

Follow this. Quality carbs before, quality protein after. Fasted cardio works for tons of people, but at a non intense state. Working out hard on an empty stomach in most will promote catabalysm and you'll end up burning tons of unnecessary muscle mass, you'll lose weight, but that weight will be the worst kind to lose, muscle. Look at low GI carbs. 70% of your energy starts with carbs, eat some oatmeal or sweet potatoes before a workout. You can google best pre workout carbs and get a ton of ideas, or better yet, click here.

    Oddly emotional post op?

Yep. I am not known to be an emotional person, in fact quite the opposite. But after surgery I was an emotional wreck! I felt sad, depressed, isolated, lonley, angry, agitated, you name it. What's worse was I had no reason to feel this way. I have a very loving, supportive family who took good care of me, I didn't have to rush back to work, my weight loss went very well so I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. Then it made sense when I realized that all of the hormones stored in the fat were being released as I lost weight. That, plus the changes in brain chemistry caused by the surgery/healing process, it was no wonder I was such a mess. It was comforting to know that I wasn't losing my mind along with my weight! The emotional swings should level out about 6-8 weeks post op. Hang in there and good luck!
  18. I got my packet for pre-surgery requirements today, and I noticed that my surgeon suggests (but doesn't require) a pre-op liquid diet for two weeks. I am currently on the South Beach diet and doing OK with hunger, but I am afraid I'll be starving on a liquid diet pre-op. Does anyone know the reason it has to be liquid. I understand why post-op it must be a liquid diet, but not sure why you need to do that before the operation. I am curious because I tend to stay less hungry on solid foods, and if the goal is just to lose weight, I'd rather stick with South Beach.

  21. I had surgery on April 13, 2009. I just got my first fill on May 28, 2009 and am loving my band!! Not regrets no going back. I have lost 40 pounds and have never felt better. My weight has also been lifelong as well. I had to do this for my health. I needed a drastic change and this was what it took. I did go through bandster hell and than my emotions about my band were all over the place but I knew to expect that we all go through that. I am losing weight again and have restriction now!
  22. Thanks for your encouraging post. Sadly, I've tried all different BCP's, Natural Progesterone Cream, Metformin, Acupuncture....However I haven't taken Clomid due to my extra weight. I'm thinking I may give that a try once I'm down to 215/200 or 1 year post-op at least. I know that I sometimes ovulate, and my OB-GYN thinks I have had several chemical pregnancies. Gives me hope to know that others struggled and still got pregnant. Good luck with your pre-op, it took me a year to get the courage to make an appointment, and was approved in three months, but waited six due to work/grad school/time off etc. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster three weeks, but I'm down over 25 pounds so I can't complain.
  23. My OB/GYN thinks that I have had PCOS since I was a teen/puberty. I have 4 children. This isn't me trying to boast. I'm currently on Mirena. All of the times I got pregnant I was on the mini pill. Progestin-only no other hormone. I've only conceived between these weights. 230lb to 270lb. I'm not sure how uncommon it is for that to balance someone out. During blood work, Progesterone and Vitamin D are the only levels that ever showed up alarmingly low for me. So my OB/GYN recommended Mirena instead to make sure I don't have an accidental pregnancy or trouble with continuous bleeding and sporadic periods. I feel slightly embarrassed and erroneous saying I'm technically infertile. Without the mini pill, I likely wouldn't have been able to have children. I wonder if seeing an endocrinologist specifically for fertility-related reasons would help just to raise whatever is low. I was also on 500mg of Metformin with my last baby so that may have also been at work with the progestin. I hope I'm not being offensive to you or your OB/GYN. Maybe I was just a rare case that isn't similar to most PCOS hormone imbalances. So this wouldn't be helpful at all. I just thought it might be worth a shot later on. I'm only done with the first stage of my insurance for Weight Loss Surgery. I don't have a surgery date yet. I was just told by the weight loss clinic that my file was processing this last week and I'd hear back in 2-6 weeks. I hope everything goes well for you and the weight loss is enough to right everything naturally and that you find something to prevent it in the meantime if that's what you are trying to do. ❤️
  24. One of the main reasons I chose to have the sleeve was on recommendation from my OB-GYN. I have PCOS pretty bad, never wanted to do IVF because of $$ and also the hormones with PCOS are so bad I didn't know if I could stand more. My partner and I have not prevented pregnancy in over five years. I had an early miscarriage about 4 years ago, but nothing since then. I will be 40 when I hit one year post-sleeve and I'm a bit nervous that I'm too old. But at least I will (hopefully) be at a healthier weight by then and more able to have a healthy pregnancy. SO my question is , did the surgery help with fertility? Any older Mom's get pregnant after surgery? Was it a healthy pregnancy?
