Blah...my first stall...
SleeverSk replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ok ssooooo I am in a facebook group that has lots of veterans in it and one made this comment to me today and it makes sense. "its only considered a stall if you have lost no weight for 6 consecutive weeks." She stated that this is what her surgical team have told her and few others agreed, I kind of agree with her because I did think calling a few days or a week or 2 of no weight loss a stall especially straight after surgery was a bit soon because your body does need time to heal and adjust. this is how the comment came about, someone had posted about not losing weight after week 2 they were now in week 4 I chimed in and said oh yes don't worry its call the week 3 stall, there are numerous post about it in the forum I am in blah blah blah thinking I was giving good advise only to be shot down in flames. so yeah its interesting how people have a different view on what a stall is, I like this one 6 weeks no loss because your body does need time to adjust and we all know that even though the scales dont move the inches can so that needs to be considered too because you are still losing its just in inches not on the scales. -
Almost 8 weeks post op, when can I eat certain foods ?
Arabesque replied to PM2022's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Were you given an plan with recommended foods to eat or avoid by your surgeon &/or dietician? If not ask your dietician & medical team for a list. Generally, we’re advised to avoid breads, rice and pasta because they swell in your tummy filling you quickly, and are nutritionally poor. So sushi, tortillas etc. would be out. Focus on getting your protein in first, then some vegetables, then a little fruit &/or carbs - look for low processed whole or multi grain as permitted on your plan - if you can. For most of us by the time we ate our protein then a couple of bites of vegetables, we were done. By 8 weeks I was eating all meats (soft white fish, smoked salmon, chicken, beef, pork, lamb). When we say we can’t tolerate a specific food it can be that you feel nauseous, or it sits heavily in your tummy & causes a general discomfort, it may taste or smell awful, it may be too dry or coarse & feel like it gets stuck & you get the foamies or you may bring it up. It occurs because our tummies are so sensitive after the surgery - healing & then getting used to foods again. But it doesn’t mean you won’t ever be able to eat that food. It’s really a temporary thing. Sometimes a couple of days or a week or so later it’s fine. Also you may be able to eat something without issue for weeks then one day your tummy says no, not today. Then the next day it’s all good. I called my tummy a petulant, tantrum throwing two year old for a couple of months. Yes, chicken can be too dry especially breast. Try thigh instead. It’s way more flavoursome & moist. If beef sits well, eat beef. Some struggle with salads to begin because they can be coarse & the leaves can seem like they get stuck & often they’re not on your plan for a couple of months. -
Surgery day questions--Assistance please.
Arabesque replied to BariatricLove0718's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The variations in answers to your questions occurs because we all heal & recover differently. For example,e, some return to work after a week, others take two or three. I took four but my energy levels were very low as was my blood pressure but my recovery is always slow. Your surgeon may do things differently too. Like, some surgeons send their patients home that afternoon. Others say stay overnight. Mine had me stay two nights as I lived alone. I ended up staying three nights as my back went into spasm & apparently my colour was poor. Have to admit I’m glad I threw in an extra pair of pjs & knickers. Ask your surgeon about the length of the surgery, expected length of your hospital stay, what to expect when you get to the hospital, etc. The hospital may have different prep requirements too. I had an appointment at the hospital a couple of days before, weight, height & medical records checked & had an ECG, blood test, etc. They also gave me an antibacterial wash I had to use in the shower at home the morning of my surgery & had to wash my hair with it too. My surgeon (& his anaesthesiologist) were lovely. He always is. Joking with me as I waited outside theatre. They both saw me in recovery after surgery too. Time sort of moves weirdly because your nervous. I have no idea how long I was in the theatre waiting room but it didn’t seem long. Though it felt like ages when I was moved outside the theatre. Make sure you get all your over the counter meds (non steroidal pain meds, Imodium, non swelling soluble fibre like Benefibre, gas X, etc.), vitamins, a variety of shakes, broths, soups, etc, as per your plan, herbal or green tea, some electrolyte drinks or sachets, before you go to hospital. All the best. -
Almost 8 weeks post op, when can I eat certain foods ?
PM2022 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I have found this website helpful so I thought I would ask. I am almost 8 weeks post op and I usually just alternate between tuna or grilled chicken daily. I have tried ground beef and I would say my stomach handles it better than chicken. Chicken is pretty harsh sometimes. I eat alot of Poke too but I feel like I haven't really experimented with alot of food yet. Not even salad. I am going on vacation in a few weeks when I am almost 3 months post op and was wondering when it was ok to try sushi with rice or thin meat like Carne Asada or Barbacoa or Korean bbq? or corn and flour tortillas ? Also, alot of people say they can't tolerate a certain food. What exactly does that mean they vomit or it hurts ? Thanks for the help -

As @ms.sss said it all evens out. You lost a large amount to begin then nothing with your stall but your average is still 4lbs a week. This is a great rate of loss. You should be jumping for joy. Don't worry about small gains. We all have a natural fluctuation. We women gain & lose just with hormonal fluctuations & fluid retention that actually have nothing to do with our true weight & how much fat we’re carrying. Plus our bodies can be just weird & react unexpectedly. Two weeks ago I literally peed every 30-60minutes all day long & peed a lot overnight. I felt like ever drop of fluid in my body was gone yet got on the scales the next morning & weighed a pound more. I should have weighed at least a pound or two less. Our weight loss graph is never a straight line. It zigs & zags up & down but as long as the general tend is in a downward direction you’re doing fine. PS - have to admit I imaged you eating a giant loaded burger at first too. 😁 -
Lol I know my phone sometimes does that when I comment. It says error and looks like it didn’t post and then before I know it, it’s on there twice-or like this time three times lol

Day 4 of Liquid: Weak and Worried
liveaboard15 replied to doobie31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No not really. depending on your surgeons schedule you will be able to eat soft foods in a few weeks after surgery. and tiny amounts fill you up fast. I was on solids after 2 weeks and it was glorious lol. Because the 2 weeks pre op liquid diet sucked and the post op liquid diet sucked because that point you really cant have any solids until a couple weeks or longer depending on your surgeon. but after the liquids it gets so much better. -
I'm on my fourth day of liquid (mostly liquid - I do get a tiny protein and veggie meal). The desire to eat (combo of hunger and craving) is difficult. But what's more difficult is most of the day I feel pretty weak and lethargic. I can live with that - it's only two weeks. My bigger concern is - Between the meal and 3 shakes, I'm taking in about 700 cals a day. Will I be feeling this weak after surgery as well? It's one thing to have 2 weeks, but if I'm going to have 2-3 months of this, I want to get mentally prepared for that. Anyone that had a hard time with the liquid prep because of low-energy, would love to hear how things went post-op.

I’m 9 days into a three week pre-op. I lost 5.4 pounds the first week, but I ate the post-op diet for five weeks prior. My mom started on the same day and lost 9lbs in the first few days. my husband isn’t unsupportive just clueless. Asks me to cook food that I can’t eat or bring food to him that smells good. I’m actually sitting in a movie theater with him right now and he’s eating a flatbread pizza while I sip water. I’ve had two protein shakes today. It can be frustrating.

Hey everyone, day 3 of my pre op surgery diet! Anyone else loosing like crazy on their pre op? Makes me wonder If I really need to be having this surgery, then I think back to all my failed attempts to do it on my own and my weekness for all things bad, So I'm counting down the days till surgery and trying not to think about food. 😛 still getting a little anxious the closer I get to the big day but I have a wonderful husband who I've been married to for 20 yrs and he's been supportive in my decision. And this group has been amazing. How is your gas pain??? Please keep us updated on your recovery...good bad and inbetween! I want to hear it all 😉 -

Homemade burgers. I was told I can since I'm a couple of days from 6 weeks out. I don't eat fries or pasta or breads or any of that. I don't eat sweets. I drink black tea, green tea, protein water, my protein shake in the morning (has caffeine), sugar free juice, flavored water. -

I have been seeing a lot of different time frames and I am curious how long it took your doctor to complete your surgery? for my sleeve, Surgery was about an hour and a half or so. My surgery was at 9:30am and i was back in my room before noon How long was your hospital stay? one night How was your doctor's bedside manner? I did not see the doctor after surgery. his surgeon assistant saw me twice and just went over things and asked if i had any questions which i did not. What can I expect when I get to the hospital before surgery? You go to pre op section, where they may have you strip down and for me anyway wipe myself with some special rags all over my body, put on a gown and lay in a bed where a nurse came and put an IV in my arm, Put some special stuff in my nose and just waited there to go to surgery. What was your biggest struggle at the hospital and at home? getting out of the chair, I needed help to get up, A bed was out of the question for a few weeks. When did you go back to work? i work from home but if i worked an actual physical job, i would want at least 2-3 weeks off If there was one thing that you could have changed, what would it be? nothing really. What did you pack to take to the hospital? extra set of clothes, crocs, headphones, nintendo switch, magazines, cpap machine, -

Ugh, that's a pretty strict pre-op. Mine isn't quite as strict, but close. I can either do 3 protein shakes or two protein shakes and a lean meat and veg dinner. However, if hungry between meals I am allowed to eat some low carb veggies, sugar-free jello, sugar-free pudding, eggs, or fat free cottage cheese. So far today I've had two protein shakes and some sugar-free jello. I'm trying to be somewhat strict with myself, because I want my liver to shrink as much as possible, to avoid complications. So I will likely be sticking with three protein shakes a day, and sugar-free jello as a snack. If I get desperate for something more filling I might boil an egg. Does your plan not allow you to have any snacks at all? -
I feel good! I start the pre-op diet this week so I might say different later on 🤣

lizonaplane replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Um... I wasn't told no burgers! Because they are ground meat, they are easier to eat, so I often order them out, as they are high in protein and I just don't eat the bun. And at 6 weeks out she should feel restriction. Most people feel it as soon as they start solid food. But I agree: just because you CAN eat as much as you want, doesn't mean you should. I can eat as much cookies as I want, but I have to stop myself from doing that. -

you have to stick to the plan and that means NO BURGERS NO eating or drinking whatever you and as much as you like. slow down your eating .you're only just 6 weeks Post op you could do serious damage, your nerves wont be healed yet to give you those "full" signals which is why we get strict eating plans to follow. sorry if I sound harsh but I think someone has to say it. I am sitting here shaking my head at the fact you are eating a full burger at 6 weeks out my god woman what are you doing to yourself. Again just because you can doesn't mean you should. -

I'm so sorry you're struggling. That sounds really hard. Have you talked to them about medications? I was hungry since day 2 after my surgery (but I did/do have restriction) and they put me on metformin and then also topamax, which have both helped. Also, what helps me is drinking a lot of coffee and tea with milk and splenda (the combination of milk and caffeine makes me feel more full) and drinking when I feel hungry, or keeping busy. A friend of mine didn't have any restriction and after her weight loss stalled they started her on ozempic. That has helped her to start losing weight again. -

ms.sss replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@SleeveDiva2022. One word: Perspective. You’ve lost 26 net lbs in 6 weeks. That is a good amount. The glory of losing 15 lbs a week those 2 first weeks is just not sustainable. You were actually above the curve those first weeks. But really, it all evens out in the end for everyone. So long as we stick to plan and make intelligent adjustments along the way, we’ll lose weight. And yes, some at faster/slower rates than others. I know it probably feels like its over and that this is all the weight you are destined to lose, but frankly its just not true (if u stick to it). And basically impossible (so long as u stick to it). So another word for you as well: Patience. Good Luck! ❤️ -
How about I got my period on day 2 of post op.

If you are only a few days out from surgery, it might be pain from the surgery itself. I had a lot of surgical pain for the first week. -
Blah...my first stall...
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so frustrated. I lost 30 pounds the first 2 weeks after surgery. Then I hit a stall for 2 weeks. Lost 5 pounds when the stall broke, and then literally lost nothing else. Stayed at that weight for a week, and now I'm gaining weight!!!!! I don't understand it. I bought a food scale and I weigh everything. I check the labels on everything to make sure Protein is high and carbs and fats are low. I work out once, sometimes twice, a day. I never have restriction, so I make sure to set alarms for when I can eat so I don't graze or eat too much (I eat 3 meals and 1 snack per day). I'm always hungry, but I do my best to ignore it and stick to the diet and eating schedule. I did a journal of what I eat and I sent it to my dietician and she said "it looks good, you're doing what you're supposed to. It might be that you have PCOS and it's holding on to your weight and even putting some back on. We see this a lot in PCOS patients." Wait....what??? I lost 100 pounds in 8 months on Keto, but I can't lose more than 30 with WLS??? And it took 2 months before the weight came back with keto, but I can't even make it to 6 weeks post op before the weight starts coming back with WLS??? I went down from a size 30 in clothing to a size 22 before the weight came back with keto. I haven't gone down any clothing sizes with WLS and my clothes are still fitting pretty much the same (I've gained 6 pounds back from the 30 I lost). I can drink as much as I want, eat anything I want, don't have to eat slow because there's no restriction and nothing to make me slow down, I could only eat 1/3 of a burger a week or so ago, now I can eat a whole one with no issues and not quite feel comfortable yet (I still stop, even though I'm still hungry). I know everyone says my stomach is still healing, but I never lost my hunger hormone, I never had food aversion, I never really had any restriction. After the first 2 weeks (my stomach was still very sensitive and I had to crush pills and be careful what I ate because PAIN), I never had any other ANYTHING that would even indicate I had surgery. Literally nothing has changed. So I follow the diet, weigh my food, eat only at my designated times, work out, journal what I eat, stay hungry, gain weight back, and basically just live miserably every day.
