    6 month diet requirement

@@johnny207 can I ask how long you had the band before you submitted for revision? Also what types of problems were you having? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. Throughout the years with my band, I always had plenty of fruit and veggies in my diet. Every morning I had a fruit smoothie with fresh fruits and veggies. I also had the rule that if I got hungry, no matter what time, I could snack on a guava or blueberries... Etc. It worked out really well, weight-wise, skin & hair-wise, health-wise. Right now since I just had a sleeve revision, I have to focus on Protein and Water but as I progress, I'll eventually go back to my balanced diet. As of now, I make sure I get at least one serving of fruit in my morning shake, along with veggies blended in. If I don't have fruits in my diet, my weight stalls. With fruit, and under 1400 cal/day, I can consistently and easily drop weight. Right now I'm averaging only 600 cal/day and losing about the same but on so little food... So I look forward to more fruit & veggies in my diet again. That's just me though. Everybody is different. Whatever works hehe.

    Lap-band

There's nothing I can say about bypass. I was beginning to think I might be a revision candidate, but, happy to say, my band is still viable; seven years next month. May I ask why you're considering revision?
  4. Hi Shrinkingmeme, That darn Lap Band!! My hubby had his for 13 years, which was in the year of 2000. He did lose 100#'s but he is a Large man. He started out at 520#'s so we had expected a lot more of a loss. When he went in for his fill the nurse damaged his port. First let me say his Dr at the time said he wasn't strong enough for the RNY which was what he wanted and needed. She also used a VANGAURD BAND ( he was the first man in Oregon to get one) it was a BIG lap band. So he never lost any more weight and it came to be that he couldn't eat or drink and hold anything down. The VA sent him to a Dr in Coos Bay Oregon to empty his band. Then he tried to refill it but couldn't. He was scheduled for a revision to the RNY. When they got in there the band had eroded into his liver and he had to much scar tissue to be able to do the RNY. They did remove his band and his Gallbladder. He told him that after he healed for 3 months they could go back in for the RNY. Well he developed abcesses bad He was so sick he almost died. He was sick for 9 months and 3 of them he doesn't even remember!! Fast forward to him trying to get the Dr in Coos Bay to get the RNY well he told us he wouldn't do the surgery because he was such a problem child, but he referred him to OREGON HEALTH AND SCIENCE they told him they would do it if he got his A1C down below 8. And lose 20#'s. Well I don't know if you are familiar with Diabetes but if his blood sugar is down his weight is up so he just couldn't get it done. So we went to Mexico June 3 when that Dr opened him up his whole right side was solid scar tissue from his band and other surgery so they did the Sleeve on him. He isn't losing his weight easily for sure. He has lost 60#'s now. I had the RNY and lost all of my weight in 6 months which was 124#'s. I think people should be compensated or at least Dr's should have to make it right!!! I have heard that the FDA may be pulling them off the market and there are a lot of Dr's that don't even do them anymore. It makes me so mad that so many people have suffered because of the Lap Band!! Good luck on your Journey's!!
  5. Hi all so I had the lap band placed Jan of 2011. Slowly was getting fills each month trying to get to the "sweet spot". Got down to 220 from hw of 275. Well in Oct went in for my monthly fill and it ended up being to much but I could still eat some things so I was going to try and take it easy until my next apt in Nov 3 weeks latter. Well the Sunday before my apt I got so stuck I couldn't swallow my own silva. So to the ER I went and they did an emergency unfill of about 5 cc's. Went in that following we'd for my scheduled apt and they put 3 cc's back in now that the swelling had gone down. 2 weeks latter I get my bill for both ER visit and fill apt and my insurance did not cover the unfill or the fill so that was $300 for the ER visit $250 per fill unfill. I could not afford that so I did not go back to get another fill for a few months I think it was Jan get 2 more cc's so now I'm back up to 7 cc's out of a 10 cc band. Go back in Feb get .5 cc's and am almost back to where I was when it started. Well in the few months of being at only 5 cc's I gain like 20 lbs back. Sill not covered by insurance so wait another year. 2013 get .3 cc's and now I'm am at 7.8 cc's. Still gained weight during this. And have always dealt with stuck episodes very often. My family got very used to me having to leave the table to go PB. I thought it was because of my teeth. I only had 1 molar and the 4 front top teeth to chew with all bottom btw. Spring forward to this year Jan I got my teeth fixed so now I have a full head of teeth and can chew better. Still having stuck episodes often. So jump to July 2016 teeth are healed well and I make an apt to get a fill. Go in and am told that they have found problems with the lapband and it causes the esophagus to dilate. So have to go for an upper GI. That looks good but no real restriction. Well at my apt I talked to my Dr about of this doesn't work wanting to go for a revision to Gastric bypass. She calls me the day after the upper GI and we talked and decided that my body is not seeming to be tolerating the band and with all my issues and the issues they have seen with the band to go ahead and start the process for the revision. Aug I decided I wanted to see if a slight unfill would help with some of the pain I am experiencing and thinking I might be experiencing silent reflux. So make another apt for Sept 8th. She tries to do the unfill but my port is angled and she can't get it so now I have to have it done under flora scope. And she wants me to have an EDG. Just had both apt this last tues Sept 20th. The dr that did the EDG found my z-line to be irregular did a biopsy and diagnosed me with GERD. so now here I sit waiting till Oct 19th for my second new patient apt and to start the process all over. And waiting for the biopsy results. Thanks for the support Love ShrinkingMeme

    Not losing weight

Are you working out? How many grams of Protein are you consuming daily? My doctors say it's best to get around 80 grams of protein daily. I just started working out because my weight has reached a stand still and I had surgery back in April and I've lost 40 lbs Good luck!! 7. Hi Aivey! Congrats on your baby. Well the band looks like it's more hazardous to your health, most insurances will not hesitate to revise you from band to whatever so if you choose which is most likely the VSG or the RNY. I doubt that you will have to wait a six-month diet prior to surgery. It all depends on your insurance too. I suggest to go ahead and speak to your surgeon and get the ball rolling Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  12. My endo suggests I have a revision to sleeve or bypass from my band. I am pretty sure insurance will approve a revision pretty easily as I have regained almost all my weight. My question is this: My insurance requires a 6 month preop diet. (I did that with the band.) Will that requirement stand for a revision, or does the fact that I have a band serve as my medically supervised weightloss attempt?
  13. Can I butt in here? I had Lapband in 2009, but my endo thinks I need a revision. I lost 65 pounds initially and kept off 60 of those until I had my daughter. I had a complicated pregnancy, and lost weight through most of it. Thanks to preeclampsia, I did manage to gain 16 pounds. All of that was gone before my preemie came home from the hospital. Since then, I have gained back all but 15 pounds of my highest weight. My insurance required a 6 month diet before my first surgery. Do you think this will be required again, or will the fact that I have a band negate that requirement this time? Also, anything else you want to throw in there will be welcome.
  14. I had LapBand in 2009, but my endo. thinks I should have a revision to sleeve or bypass. Insurance required 6 month supervised diet before my initial surgery. Will they require this again before a revision surgery or does having the band itself negate that requirement?
  15. Back in 2009, I picked the lap band, but in 2016 my new doctor suggested a revision to sleeve. I am happy with his suggestion and am happy with the surgery so far. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    September Sleevers!

Hey September sleevers ^^ Had a 9/2/2016 band to sleeve revision. Other than the first day, it's been a good recovery. It's a totally different feeling than the band which I had for like 8 years, so it's going to take some getting used to but no complaints so far.

    Revision Advice (help)

I was a band to sleeve revision. I never had issues with acid prior to getting sleeved, but unfortunately, have been one of the unlucky ones to develop major acid issues post-sleeve. My doctors have tried everything, but nothing has worked. Thus, I am now looking at revising to bypass.

    Revision Advice (help)

I had a band and was revised over a month and a half ago and have not had one instance of acid reflux. Acid reflux is not a given with the sleeve, but it can occur Sent from my LGLS991 using the BariatricPal App

    September 22nd Sleevers

Band to Sleeve revision on the 2nd of Sept. so today is my post op day 22. I too had to climb stairs on the day I came home. I don't ever remember it lol, as I did everything in a daze that day. I had it done outpatient, check in at 5 am, surgery at 7am, released at 4 pm. Recovery has been good. Only tough day was the when I first woke up after surgery, and I felt like I got ran over by a truck or two or three. Day 2 I slept all day. Thanks for asking.
  20. Hello. i'm new on here. just want to share my story to seek advice. when i was 15 back in 2008, i got the lap band. it was the worst experience ever. i was only loosing weight because i threw up EVERY SINGLE bit of food i ate. i lost 80lb very very quickly and i was extremely sick. my doctor said it shouldn't be happening, so instead of trying to fix it he drained my band. After a year i started to gain weight. In 2012 i was revised to the gastric sleeve. at this time, this procedure was brand new to my doctor, he hadn't done it before. I got it done quickly after the appointments with him, maybe 3 months. i was a slow loser for a whole year. it took me a year to lose 70 pounds, even eating what i thought was healthy (Protein first and some vegetables and brown rice, wha i was taught). i wasn't never really taught about carbs at all, always just eat "whole grain everything but eat your protein first and you should be fine" none of the information that i learned now from the fb group. i got into my first relationship, went to the DR and was diagnosed with PCOS, like lots of girls are. I was put on birth control and as soon as i did my weight shit up. as it shot up and me not knowing why i threw myself into a mind change that i couldn't shake out. while working 2 jobs (13 hour days) i began to lose care about myself, and regained most my weight, shooting back up to 230. i hadn't noticed the weight gain for a while, either because i'd stopped weighing myself. last year i started to exercise and count my calories and lost 20 lbs. even continuing it again, i have not budged. does anyone have any advice? yes, i know that you need to diet with the sleeve. it wasn't till recently by following where i learned about macros and counting calories and Protein shakes. my mother recently got the sleeve procedure, and i was thinking of going to her doctor to discuss my options, because mine no longer takes my new insurance and he is a pediatric doctor. do you think he would help me, or just toss me to a nutritionist? thanks. Why did you choose bypass?

I had the sleeve on 1/26/2012. I did lose 90 lbs. within the first year. I had absolutely NO dumping and no reflux. I figured out really quick that I could eat all the same foods as before but only less. I convinced myself that now I was "normal" and could eat what I wanted because of my restricted stomach size. WRONG!! I started regaining a couple of years out and all the weight came back quickly. I have no restriction and can eat a full size plate with no problem. I am now scheduled for a sleeve to bypass revision at the end of October. Everybody has to do what is best for them, but I have since learned after the sleeve that there are quite a few others that are also gaining back after about year two. I am beyond blessed that I get a second "second chance" with bypass. I will not mess it up this time! Stay afraid of the foods that caused the gain in the first place!!
  22. Hi SDC, yeah, I guess you can guess that tacos at 3 weeks wouldn't be a good idea. Do talk to your nutritionist and/or surgeon when you can start incorporating solid foods on your plan. If there is anything one will learn on this forum is that there are huge differences between surgeons/nutritionists/people opinions. Some go low carb, others prefer balanced... blahblahblah. hehe Once you're cleared for solids, may I suggest some healthy taco recipes. I had the band for a long time (been a member since 2010), and often enjoyed healthy tacos. I just recently revised to the sleeve due to issues with the band, so I'm still in the pureed stage. So like you, no tacos for me. However, in the future, here are some ideas. Hope this helps. http://www.self.com/story/3-ridiculously-delicious-and-healthy-summer-taco-recipes
  23. I was banded 03/2012 with my highest weight being 318. The lowest I saw with the band was 237 around 07/2014. I rarely felt real restriction and worked out 5-6 days a week, 2 hours a day, to get to 237. Once I couldn't keep up the workout routine I began gaining. My doctor/nutritionist put me on a diet pill around 10/2015 which I didn't see much results and hated the side effects. I was unbanded on 05/2016 and am on schedule for my revision 12/2016. Currently, I am about 305. My surgeon suggested a sleeve, but I am wondering if bypass would give me better results despite the complications that can come from bypass. Should I push for a bypass instead of the sleeve? Do others feel they would've been more successful with a band to bypass revision? I have a goal weight of 155-170 pounds.
  24. I got the approval for my sleeve to bypass revision surgery from Aetna!!!! I had VSG in January, 2012. I started gaining back the weight about 1 1/2 years ago and sadly regained all I had lost. I am SO ready for this second "second chance" and feel so blessed!! The insurance coordinator at my doctor's office was very worried that we would get approved because other requests had been denied by Aetna. So I am the first one that has received the approval at their office! I will be getting all the pre-op appointments done quickly and surgery is like to be by the end of October! One thing I did not do after VSG was to develop a network of support from this community. I want to change that this time around! I need all the support I can get. VSG Surgery: 1/26/12 Highest Weight: 239.9 Lowest Weight 150.2 Height: 5'5" Bypass Surgery: Date TBD Current Weight: 236
  25. Hi Stefanie, I'm in toronto too. I'm going to Montreal for a revision (self-pay). I looked into both. Like others have said. Bypass is the proven gold standard, so should not be something to be too concerned about. I'm the opposite of you. I've been told they may not be able to do a bypass because of scar tissue and my have to do a sleeve. I won't know until I have woken up which I got. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
