    Upset.

Its tough an alcoholic and a smoker can avoid social situations putting them around other smokers or drinkers. food is everywhere and we need it to survive. Commercials are my worst enemy! Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Upset.

I'm 3 months out and was just thinking the same. It's a lot tougher than I thought it would be. I don't think you can ever be really prepared for all the changes. It really grinds on my nerves when someone insinuates i took the "easy" way out. An alcoholic and a smoker can have moments where they give into temptation. We cant this soon out even if we wanted to. Hang in there. It's going to be worth it.

    Alcohol Abuse

Scotti you need to get help. AA is NOT a form of weakness. It is proof of your inner courage shining through the fear of change that you have decided to attend a meeting. It takes far more courage to seek help for a problem than to deny the problem. The damage an alcoholic inflicts on their family is devastating. I am the child of a raging alcoholic. My mother refused to get help because it was "weak". After 25 years of self loathing she took her life. She could not live with the guilt of the abuse she dealt us. She devastated her children and robbed her grandchildren of the chance to love her because she refused to look beyond herself. You can do it. You just have to be willing to take that first step. A good lunch is canned chicken with fat fre mayo, pickles, and mustard wi th a string cheese. There are a lot of different uses for the chicken and it has a lot of protein. Good luck to you!

I need help getting back on track

I also need help I'm 6 wks away from my one yr and I have not reached my goal I eat carbs and crap and feel like I'm hungry 24/7 I have lots of water on most days at least 64 oz and have stopped going to gym, I know I'm setting my self up to fail maybe we can share and support each other. This week I decided to stop drinking for a month and see how it goes. I feel I've been sabotaging my diet with alcohol. I've completely stopped logging food and I need to get back to protein packed diet, I keep saying tomorrow... Tomorrow I'll go to the gym suggestions?

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

I smell a muddy troll... No doctor in their right mind would sleeve someone with only 20# to lose, and at two weeks out your sleeve can barely tolerate water and protein shakes, let alone alcohol. If this is what you do for entertainment is start drama on a site intended to support those who need it I feel sorry for you.

KarissaKhaso, what the "administration" of these forums supports is the enforcement of our forum rules, which are located here: http://www.verticals...tion=boardrules Those rules express how everyone has a right to post, regardless of perspective. They also say "We take the "Be Polite" rule very seriously. We do not tolerate any rudeness. Any member who is intentionally unpleasant or disruptive may be banned without warning." And, they state, "Members will treat each other with courtesy and respect, especially when they disagree. We understand that bright, intelligent and educated people may not always agree, but personal attacks in the form of insults, abusive language or other means of obvious harassment will not be tolerated." Now, asking when one may drink alcohol is not a violation of the forums rules. However, calling people ignorant, pathetic and other names is.

    Drinking... Alcohol anyway...

Lovemyself2012 I haven't had my surgery yet but I believe & listen to everything I read online so the first thing I'm going to do one month out of surgery is get hammered & then as a result become an alcoholic! And it will all be your fault!!!! LOL Seriously tho how can you really know if it didn't slow down your weight loss? However I do know that when I drink alcohol I become a "professional" dancer & shake my booty all night at the club far more than if I drink Water all night.
  8. I don't think any of this is surprising. I think most of us notice our negative emotions more because we used to calm them with food. When you can't do that you start feeling crazy until you learn different ways to cope--hopefully healthier ones. But it's part of why transfer addictions (alcoholism etc) are so common after WLS. I know I didn't even realize I'd been having anxiety all my life until a couple years ago--I've been treating it with food for so long I didn't even realize I was anxious until it got way out of control. Now I am dealing with this with my therapist and it is very helpful.

    Alcohol Abuse

Now this is my specialty. IMPO it would be highly advised that u don't take up alcohol or drugs. It's a disease and it is advised to get some help. AA is a good place to start. When doing alcohol u become less inhibited and more likely to eat way too much that can cause damage by his is the time to work on cultivating new healthy bodies and habits. Focus on learning more about healthy goods that nourish ur body don't tear it down with alcohol or drugs. U can do this! Now Rock that sleeve and clean up ur act!

    Drinking... Alcohol anyway...

It's interesting that you "couldn't make it" through your birthday 1 month out without drinking and that you find drinking "Awesome!". Those are words to evaluate and consider. It's pretty irresponsible to encourage other people down the same path IMO, but not atypical in the case of people who have addictive issues - whether with food, alcohol, or substances. Perhaps you have none of the above. It's not that I think everyone with the sleeve must give up ETOH 100% - but those whose doctors have told them to abstain ought to, as should those who have addiction issues - and those who find that it affects their weight loss should probably consider it. Several other people have made very good points about the problem of crossover addiction and health issues (like liver damage). My guess is that most every reader of this will know better - but some are just looking for someone to tell them that it is a good idea to indulge their urges 1 month after surgery.

    Alcohol Abuse

My name is PDXMan and I am an alcoholic. One of the toughest phrases I ever uttered, but one that has saved my life. As has been mentioned, AA has been the program I have used to keep me sober. You may wonder, "How does AA keep me from drinking?" It doesn't. It shows you how to live life on life's terms. Once you start doing that, you see that you don't need alcohol or drugs anymore. For me, alcohol isn't my problem. I am my problem. Alcohol was my solution. Until it wasn't anymore. If it is no longer your solution, then try finding one that has worked for millions. All it takes is some willingness to make a change. That's it. And showing up ... BTW, it also works for other drugs of choices, too. It's a scary thought, not having your coping mechanism around, but it just might work.
  13. I had my surgery on tuesday of last week (so 8 days ago). I went to my doctor today to make sure everything is healing well. He told me that I have healed so well that I can start eating any kind of food, exercise, and drink alcohol (as long as I mind my calories). He made an appointment for me to get my first fill in seven weeks. I ate about a 1/4 cup of rice and about an 1/8 cup of chicken for dinner with no problems. Although I feel totally fine, I still find it odd that I have permission to do everything 3-4 weeks earlier then is typically allowed. Did anyone else start eating solids one week after surgery?

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

I didn't mean to come off rude but some people were calling me a b***h and other names , guess I went into defense mode. And there are so many different boundaries of when not to drink alcohol . Some surgeons say 3 weeks 1 month 3 months just thought I would put it out there . Guess shouldn't be so truthful next time . But I do apologize if did come across rude to any of the people here. . I really do like these threads they have been really helpful!

  18. Not really scared of the surgery, but about not being able to eat much or drink alcohol after. I keep thinking "how am I going to act in social situations?" Will I be a different person? Am I going to be the "odd duck", while all my friends are having a good time? One of my favorite things is to go out for a prime steak & a few glasses of wine. Will I be able to do that? Lots of questions....a little uneasy, & scared. I hope I'm making the right decision. Surgery is set for a month away. On a brighter note, I booked a quick little vacation to Mexico for next week. I thought a little rest & one last fiesta would help me tackle these thoughts & fears I'm having.

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

If you can't abstain from alcohol long enough to let yourself lose weight and heal, then how will you control yourself when it comes to food? Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. Your surgeon must be losing marbles, because I don't know what surgeon in their right mind would approve alcohol consumption LESS than a MONTH out. It seems as if you weren't and still aren't in the right mindset for this journey. If you didn't want people coming at you like you have, then you shouldn't of posted something that sounds so incredibly ignorant. To come on here and boldly say that you're less than a month out and enjoying alcohol is bound to attract negative comments.

    So, here goes! pics

Thank you Missy, thank you so much for your kind words. You know I will be divorced 2 yrs this coming June, wow, how time flies. The hardest part for me is, I still love him, dang him. He just up one day and decided he wasn't happy and left, later I found out it was another woman. Yes, I was at fault too, we hadn't been happy in the last few years but I also want to add that I had watched him become an alcoholic the last 4 yrs of our marriage, not violent, just out drinking every night till the wee hrs of the morning and watched him lose a high paying plant managing job and college education to alcohol. He is a good person and we had many wonderful years, he was good to me. Guess that's why I still love him. Don't know why I got off on this, guess I needed to get it off my chest tonight. When I can let go of him, and the good Lord knows in His time I can feel pretty. But for now, it's time to focus on my weight loss, my health, me time, and maybe someday remarrying, woohoo....heehee. Had to find humor in there somewhere didn't I? Thank you again Missy. Donna

Yeah I have issues with alcohol because I had a couple sips of a drink ... That's a joke also
  23. Are you kidding me?!! Boycott a store because they put some yummy, sugary, pastries on sale? This is about taking responsibility for you choices and actions. That would be like an alcoholic saying, "Poor me, I'm trying to stop drinking, but alcohol is everywhere. They even sell beer and wine at the grocery store!" How about a law against fast food restaurants, all you can eat buffets, donuts, sodas, candy? I don't mean to sound harsh and flame me if you want but the whining and blaming have to stop. Perhaps those of us with overweight parents and grandparents should just give up. It's their fault too that were fat! It's not like we walk in to a store and if you're overweight, you get charged more for your food than the thin people. Perhaps diabetics should complain and get a special discount on what they get. BTW, overweight people cost this country more money. Overweight people tend to have more health problems, take more sick days from work, go on disability, etc. Someone complained about the cost of weight loss surgery. Well, for heaven's sake, if you weren't obese, you wouldn't need the damn surgery. Of course it cost money. Perhaps plastic surgery should be discounted for unattractive people or people that need it to feel better.

    Attention ! Australian Sleevers

Hi Seth and welcome to the group. This is one question that concerned me the most prior to my surgery. I was scared that things would never be the same again. I initially started out thinking that I didnt want anything permanant. Through the process of investigation of the options I found that it was the best option for me. I dont say t hat the sleeve is the best choice for everyone, we all have different needs and wants in life. What i do know all the fears I had pre-surgery about what life would like after surgery and things never being the same again were wasted energy. Post surgery, yes I eat less, the only time I really notice that now is when I am eatting out but I have developed ways of dealiing with this, either share a meal with friends or order an entree for myself. I can eat pretty much the same things that I did pre-surgery, however generally now my body craves good stuff that I can derive more engery from rather than junk food. I am in maintenance and yes I still eat junk on occasion. I still drink alcohol, maybe a bit slower but doesnt really feel like it. I guess what I am trying to say is that while it is a permanant measure I dont feel like it is an impact to my life now. Life isnt the same for me but in every way it is better, cause I took control of my life. For me my eatting/weight was defining me, it doesnt now. Just my 2 c from 16 months out.... Welcome sconatsam!! Way to go Lila!! Way to go!! *insert cheerleader singsongy thing here*...double digits here you come..I know how much of a landmark in the process is. You are seriously rocking your sleeve. Swiftkate, hopefully all is still going well with your recover
  25. I don't have pain if I eat too much it just wants to keep trying to come back up my esophagus. Then I spend the next hour or more trying to keep it down. Really annoying. I'm still on full liquids and have been trying to actually eat something 3 times a day like cream of wheat or a soup, but really I feel better when I don't. It's like alcohol though. No real signs while I'm eating then about 10 mins after a meal WHAM it hits me. Too late by that time.
