Ugh... why the hell did I do that?

For me, it is Chinese food that really hurts me. My husband went out last night and brought home take out. This place has the best egg rolls ever. They are filled with shrimp, pork and chicken and of course the usual veggies. I tried 2 bites of an egg roll and my stomach just turned. I could not eat anything after that. I ended up having a Greek yogurt a little later. I usually have a couple of steamed chicken or shrimp potstickers and those Sitwell with me but I could not manage it last night after those two bites of egg roll. Then of course my husband has drilled it into his head that he needs to eat whatever I don't. He gains weight and wonders why. I gently try to help him understand that he doesn't need to clean his plate or fill it that full in the first place and he certainly does not need to eat my left overs. I won't be doing that again anytime soon.
  2. I have only been able to drink bottled water at room temperature otherwise I swear my stomach actually cringes. It has to be the cold and I have learned to drink my water plain or with a lemon in it. I too eat bacon, the real thing but I did not start eating bacon until I was about 8 months post op. Because of how little I eat, I do eat full fat cheeses, bacon, yogurt, cottage cheese. But, I really do stick mostly to quality proteins, veggies and amazing fruit so that really helps control my diet. I also believe in everything in moderation. If I want a brownie or some ice cream I have a small portion every once in a while. I find if I don't let myself have these foods at all, it is likely I will go off plan and be right back where I started. Again, I did not even think of touching anything like that until I was post op about 8 months and down over 100lbs.
  3. I'm exactly 2 weeks post op and during this time I lost 16 lbs, but since Wednesday I've weighed 254 lbs (I usually weigh myself wed and Sunday and log it in my journal) I was cleared to work out so I've done 30 mins on the arc Trainor (it's like an elliptical) and walking around my neighbor hood etc. Been moving moving moving . I am getting plenty of fluids in and I get 75-80 GM protein in. I'm following my plan I just don't know what's happening or what I'm doing wrong. I'm not drinking sugary drinks I only have water, milk every few days, water, protein shakes, yogurt which is 0 everything, and now I'm on full soups I'll do tomato from Panera bread etc. maybe it's sodium from the soups? Is this normal? I know I already lost a significant amount which I wouldn't have been able to accomplish in a week let alone a month on my own but it bums me out to see that the scale hasn't moved in almost a week.

    Not losing weight

Yes, you need to increase your protein.....and I assume when you said 300 carbs, you mean calories....However, I suggest leaving the baked potato and eat more protein. Potatoes don't have a lot of nutritional value...it's high in carbs that you don't really want while you're trying to loose weight. Try sticking to lean meats and fish, and non-starchy veggies like green Beans, yellow squash, zuchinni ...etc.....Potatoes, rice, Pasta, bread......stay away from! If you have difficulty getting enough protein from food add a protein shake that is low in carbs....If you eat fruit eat it with a protein like deli meat, Greek yogurt, or nuts.....(of course eat the foods I'm mentioning only if you're cleared to eat them) I eat mostly protein, by the time I finish my protein, (fish or chicken) I have very little room for veggies or anything else.....maybe a bite or two. I hope that helps.

    Pre-op diet

I've been on my peo-op diet since this past Tuesday. I have surgery on the 19th. My pre-op diet consists of three Protein shakes a day with skim milk or light soy milk, I use Rutein for the protein. I can have up to 2 cups of lettuce or spinach or greens. That's cooked or regular. 1 light yogurt a day 6oz. 1 cup of sugar free Jello, coffee and tea with no sugar, honey etc... And up to 2 cups of low sodium chicken broth or beef broth a day. Sounds like everyone has something a little different. Guess is dependent on the doc. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App

    Question about Fruit

I agree with this 100%! Protein bars and Protein shakes are just way too processed. Work on getting your protein from real food.....fish is a great source as it's higher than most meats......and yes enjoy your fruit.....I usually have fruit once a day but I always have it along with a protein......strawberries with my Greek yogurt......almonds with watermelon.....apple with a slice of low sodium deli meat....the options are limitless. Good luck!!
  7. Except for traveling to Mexico to have the surgery, you sound very much like me. I am 51 years old and just had the sleeve done on Tuesday the 5th. I understand it is very scary because you have no idea what to expect in terms of outcome related to surgery and risks associated with that, but also with how you'll physically feel afterwards and down the road. I can't answer the part about down the road, but physically right now I can tell you 5 days post-op, my abdomen is sore, I am not supposed to bend or lift anything heavier than 10 pounds. I am on a liquid diet and my meals these past two days have been mostly Water or beverages in addition to 4 ounces of pureed Soup and 2 ounces of yogurt. I am not hungry for more. Even smelling yummy foods...they smell good but it doesn't somehow make the connection to my stomach and me wanting to fill it with whatever I'm smelling. It's a really weird feeling for sure. I can't drink very much liquid at a time, and it's a struggle to get in the required 56 ounces of Fluid, though I'm trying hard because one of the biggest complications early on is dehydration. Oh, and I lost 4 pounds yesterday! Surgery always comes with risks, and I went into mine worried about not making it through to the other side. The admitting nurse made me feel instantly at ease, though, and talked about the things I needed to do post-surgery, which made me start seeing past the actual surgery. She was a godsend. I would be very nervous if my plan was to do this in Mexico, but I admittedly know very little about having it done there. I do know that my patient coordinator got a bit annoyed with my questions at times, and that irritated me! Your obesity will impact your family one way or another. 54 is not too old to do something to get yourself to a healthier place. I wish you the best of luck in your decision

    Question about Fruit

I also agree with @Bufflehead. Pro fruit.... Anti protein bar. Now my Nut allowed reasonable quantities fruit after I was cleared to try "any" food. My personal trick it pair my fruit with protein like cottage cheese , Greek yogurt, cheese or some lunch meat. Berries are a great choice and so is watermelon. Things like pineapple or banana are considered an occasional treat. I also find I can't eat much fruit without a tummy ache so it keeps me in check.
  11. I keep lots of fruit, cheese and nuts around and in the front of the fridge or pantry. I love the idea of frozen bananas or frozen yogurt so I need to get some of those in my freezer. YUM! In fact I am watching a show on how to make frozen bananas right now.

    Probiotic yogurt?

I eat Activia. I take several kinds of meds & it messes up my stomach. I started eating the antibiotic yogurt because I didn't want to take another pill!! It works & I haven't had any issues.

    Probiotic yogurt?

    This is Horrible...

I had my surgery on the 27th, too. My doctor put me on the purée phase on day eight. I have been eating egg beaters' yogurt' applesauce' baby food, sugar free pudding, mashed potatoes, and cottage cheese. So far, with my fluids, things have been going smoothly.
  21. Losing weight after WLS is a lot easier when you don’t have any off-limits foods around. Ideally, you clean your kitchen before surgery, and restock it with healthy foods to make weight loss a no-brainer. Unfortunately, we don’t all live in a healthy-food-bubble. We may have children who demand normal kid foods like mac and cheese, packaged chips and Cookies, and other high-calorie, low-nutrient fare that’s not really on your WLS diet. Or you may be in charge of cooking for family members who won’t touch the lean Proteins and plain veggies you eat. So, that means you can’t clear your kitchen of all forbidden foods, and you may even need to have close contact with those foods when you make your children’s lunches or serve your family dinner. How do you cope? One of my strategies is to always make sure I have a healthy alternative around for me. So, if the kids want ice cream, I can have yogurt or a frozen banana. If they want burgers, I can have a turkey burger on lettuce. The other thing I do is try to keep healthy foods way more visible and accessible than the junk. I try to keep Snacks like nuts and canned fruit in front of snacks like chips and cookies in the pantry. I also make sure fruits and veggies are super easy to eat – I keep some washed and cut in the fridge so if I opt for mindless munching, I’ll grab them instead of whatever unhealthy alternatives there are, like crackers with jam. How do you deal with the tempting and off-limits foods that you can’t get out of your life?
  22. I had a very hard time with the puréed stage. I could not tolerate meat or eggs right out of the gate. I leveraged Protein shakes, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, cream of wheat with Protein powder and milk. I literally lived on that for a month before they let me move on the the soft food stage. Then for the first 6 weeks of that I really stuck to fish like white fish, salmon and tuna. Now I can eat all meats but still cannot do eggs. I can only eat a couple of ounces of meat at one sitting so I still drink 1 Protein shake a day that has 30grams of protein and I always have 1 Greek yogurt.

    Meal Planning for Phase 3

Sometimes I still struggle at 22 months post op. I can only eat a couple of ounces of dense Protein at one sitting so I am still drinking one Protein shake per day. I will also use cottage cheese and Greek yogurt as Snacks which helps but there are days where my 70gram protein goal is still short at the end of the night. I will usually have a half of a Protein Bar or some beef Jerky to push me over the top. Part of my struggle is my inability to eat eggs post surgery. I still cannot eat them without getting very sick to my stomach so I don't.
  24. I would have mashed potatoes and cream of wheat in moderation, besides the normal refried Beans, ricotta cheese (with tomato sauce), yogurts, etc. I also would get some of Amy's Soups and purée them. They worked well. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I think cottage cheese, sugar free pudding and Jello, ricotta cheese, and yogurt are probably going to be your go-to foods in the puree phase. I ate fat-free refried Beans a lot during that phase. I get the texture grossness about pureeing but you have to wait to eat solids for a reason. Hope you find what you're looking for! Definitely ask your nutritionist for suggestions, as he/she would know the most about it.
