  1. I was banded on May 7th and they didn't tell me not to bend. They just said not to lift over 10 lbs for two weeks. I feel good. I am a hairdresser and went back to work on the 6th day after surgery. I had some pain but it was tolerable. They did keep me over night in the hospital right after surgery because I had so much pain so they could give me IV pain meds. I'm 10 days out now and feel good other than that I can't sleep on either side. I am sick of sleeping on my back. haha
  2. Walmart has one in the fitness section. The cost is under $10.
  3. The first couple of days after surgery are a bit fuzzy, but that is to be expected. I tried to ween myself off the pain meds fairly quickly. Now, I only use them at night, if needed to help go to sleep. I haven't used them for the last couple nights. My new stomach and I are still trying to negotiate terms, and each day is spent trying to figure out what things we do and do not like. The only major hiccup I have had in this process is that I woke up this past Thursday night/Friday morning about 3:30am screaming in pain. It was an excruciating pain on the upper-right part of the abs, just under the rib cage. I suspected it was a gallbladder thing. I contacted the doc as soon as his office opened in the morning, and they had me come in for an exam. The doc seems to think it had something to do with gallbladder too. He sent me to get tested and have an ultrasound done of the area. By about 2pm in the afternoon, the pain left about as quickly as it came... and I was able to relax enough to fall back to sleep. Something positive that came out of the doc visit is to see that I dropped almost 10 lbs since surgery. All together, I have lost like 47 lbs, I can hardly believe it. I'm almost at the 50 lbs mark since last spring. How is that even possible? I've never been this successful at losing weight... and most of that weight came off pre-op! So, as I've approached (and maybe even hit) the 50 lbs mark, something I've noticed about my morning/evening walks with the dog is that I feel phenomenal. I mean, as I walk, it feels like there is less gravitational pull on my body... almost like what I would imagine walking across the surface of the moon would be like. I walk faster, the pressure that used to be on my knees and lower back is gone... and my clothing is hanging on me... making it feel like I'm flowing as I walk. I know that people still seen the 300+ lbs version of me, but that version of me is becoming less by the day. I still have a long way to go before I hit my goal. However, with as fit and energetic as I feel at the moment, I see myself more as the person who has already hit that goal. I hope I can continue on this strong in the coming months as winter approaches.

T minus 24 hours and counting!

So glad there are two others on this topic going in tomorrow. I need to report to the hospital at 10 am. I'm jealous of the others who report earlier. I was allowed to have a light Breakfast and a light lunch today (just had Protein shakes) and then only clear liquids until midnight. After that - I'm cut off. Definitely do-able to not drink or eat when I wake up tomorrow but when you are denied, that's when you want it more. Interesting how different surgery instructions can be, both pre-and post-op. Good luck to Orion and Green-eyed wolf (glad you were able to work things out). Speedy recovery!!
  5. My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow at 8:00 am (24 hours from now!) I don't know what anyone else's day before surgery looks like, but this is mine: Protein sake at 7:30 and 10:30 I can't have anything but Clear liquids from lunchtime today until midnight... but NO solid food is allowed today so I will have my last shake at 12:00-12:30 this afternoon. After I shower normally tonight, I then have to shower with a special soap, which involves turning off the Water and rubbing the soap all over me for 5 minutes before I rinse, after which, no lotions, powders, deodorants, perfumes, etc. I have to get up at 4 am and do the shower thing a second time. I have to leave for the hospital at 5 am and check in at 6 am. Does anyone else have special "day before" instructions? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App

    Hi there!

I joined my local gym and waddled in there all 265 lbs of me. I was embarrassed but I knew I needed to be there. I would swim for 30 minutes. Slow laps of course. Eventually I was up to walking 4 miles on the lap course. The compliments I recieved from people who had noticed me big and then becoming smaller and smaller made the embarrassment so worth it. So I started in a size 26 swimsuit and finished my membership in a size 10 tanktini. When I started maintanance I had to cut my mega exercise back to 2 miles a day and so I quit my membership . Good luck, edie

    3 days post op

Jamie, put you feet up, get your ipod, watch TV, read a book, but just give yourself time to heal. You just had major surgery, you're not supposed to lift more than 10 lbs for 6 weeks. OK, so maybe that's not possible, but still, take it easy. Any house cleaning will still be there next week. You can take liquid Tylenol if the hydrocodone doesn't work, drink lots of tea and sip, don't gulp water. It's really important to get as much water down as possible, up to 64 oz and everything counts, even the water in yogurt. Take it easy, don't stress over small stuff, a little depression is normal, and be sure to take a bunch of time for yourself. The pain is normal, most people go through it. Try to keep your attitude positive and I'll guarantee you'll be over this part in just a few weeks.

    when to get tummy tuck?

I went through this. I really wanted a tummy tuck about halfway through my weight loss - about November last year. I too thought that if I just lost my tummy, I would be happy with how I looked at that stage. I was convinced that it was the best idea. It was actually Dr Schulman who reminded me that if I lost more weight after the tummy tuck, that I'd likely need even more surgery later because the 'effect' of it wouldn't be as good as if I waited until I was closer to goal. So I waited. I figured at about 7-10 pounds a month weight loss, I'd only have to wait another three months before seeing a PS. So I rescheduled my PS appointment for Jan 09. When I saw him I was 8lbs from goal, instead of 25lbs. He scheduled me for body lift surgery (it's today actually, in about 6 hours!!) and as of today I'm below goal. So I would say that it may be an idea to wait. Even if it's only for 2-3 months. You only have 25lbs left to lose according to your ticker. What's 2-3 months in the scheme of your whole life? And the results will be much better if you wait just a little bit longer.
  9. A Bariatric Surgeon I saw while researching for which surgery and doctor to go with, stated he no longer does Lapband because the weight loss outcomes are so poor. He was the chief of surgery at a major hospital, Harvard educated and had stellar credentials, only lost one patient due to deep vein thrombosis in over 2,000 procedures in 15 years. He also stated he does all the more difficult cases with the higher risk patients. I considered the Lapband as well but he talked me out of it. Of course, he was very professional but it was clear he didn't support it, even though he recommended another doctor at the same hospital if I wished to go that route . He says it works very well for some patients but it requires a level of maintenance with adjustments (adding or removing saline through the Lapband port using a needle and syringe) to the band that most people do not follow through. In addition, the complications with the Lapband are high in his experience. But has you have seen there are many people who have successfully adjusted to life with Lapband and had a great deal of success. My understanding is, they are in the minority. I would advise to see a few different surgeons and attend the support groups. You will meet a variety of patients and their experiences will educate your decision. On another note, I find the gastric bypass diet a fantastic weight loss diet. It is by far the best diet i have ever been on. I am not hungry and feel fantastic. It's a high Protein, fruits and veggies but only a little carb. The trick is not drinking while you eat in the golden hour. No drinks 10 minutes before you eat, chew your food for 20 to 25 minutes (it's an eternity) and again no liquids for 20min after. I am never hungry. Good luck
  10. I'm 3.5 years out from gastric sleeve surgery and got below my goal but in the last two years have put on about 15 lbs. I need to lose 10 to get back to goal. My problem is that I started drinking. I'm so ashamed and feel so guilty. I did so good and was doing everything right. Now im afraid that I won't be able to lose the weight. I know I need to stop drinking but it's been hard because a lot of the people I hang out with drinks including my husband. Excuses I know. When I don't drink I get asked every time why I'm not drinking. I see that this is not uncommon but I'm actually putting myself out there and admitting I have a problem. Any words of encouragement?

    A couple of questions

    1) I had pretty bad hairloss between 3-10 months. Now, 18 months out my hair is back to normal. I do take collagen but not sure it had any impact. 2) I am not perfect with vitamins --- I probably hit 90%+ and so far my labs are good. 3) I take 3-4 times a day. Most I take in the AM (Multi, Calcium, D, B12, A, Thiamin) then I take calcium at lunch; calcium and 2nd multi at night. 3 days a week I take Iron and Vit C before bed. I take Turmeric as well to help with inflammation but that's not standard. 4) At 18 months out I eat "normal" sized meals - normal people not my pre-surgery normal. I could eat again after a couple of hours but try to stick to the 3 meals a day guidance. Hope this helps. Lori

    EGD procedure

I've lost count of how many EGD's I've had done (probably close to 10 now) because I have EOS (eosinophilic esophagitis) so I usually get 1-3 of those a year (I'm overdue for my next one and, oh joy, I will have to get my throat stretched the next time I have one -_-"). The EGD's don't hurt. They give you something to put you out and the next thing you know, you're waking up in recovery and 10 minutes later they let you go home. You'll probably be a little dizzy from the meds they used to put you under so my advice is don't watch your feet lol. Also, depending on the meds, you might be nauseous afterward as well...

    I Actually.....

I probably don't eat as I should, but I eat a way that works for me....every morning I have a slice of peanut butter toast...at around 10 AM I have a Nature Valley protein bar (yum)...12:30 is half a PB&J sandwich....maybe at 3 I'll have a piece of string cheese or an orange....I have whatever I fix my family for supper......and in the evenings I usually always have a TCBY frozen yogurt bar and I always always have my 2.5 cups of white cheddar popcorn. I get around 1200 - 1400 calories a day, but I lack protein (usually getting around 50-60 grams). I eat whatever I want but ALWAYS count my calories on Myfitnesspal.com (which I love). On the weekends I still stay within my calorie range but I'll include a trip to DQ (mini blizzards are great) or whatever treat we're indulging in....but again, I always count the calories.

Has anyone had a cold prior to surgery

I am scheduled for surgery on the 24 and I am worried too. I've been coughing my head off for 2 weeks now, I mean coughing like every 10 seconds non stop. My chest burns from it. I went to the doctor friday and got some antibiotics and nasal spray. I'm worried b/c I feel like my lungs are taking a beating right now.
  16. Pain yes but that's why they give you Med's take them it will relax you and help you heal. Gas pain is the worst but walking helps and is a good start to getting more exersice. So walk but don't over do it take it ez in the beginning. Incision pain will go way in a few days. You will be tired all the time this to will pass. What I dident expect was rapid weight loss or as much as I have lost in the first month. I con only hope I lose 28 more pounds in the next month. Just remember after surgery do as your doctor says and you will be fine Good luck on the 10 We always room on the losers team for more losers, on this team it's good to be a loser. Anymore questions just ask Surgery Anniversary 7/30/12

Has anyone had a cold prior to surgery

Same thing happened to me 10 days prior. My nurse at the hospital told me to call my Dr. and get a script for that real strong antibiotic that you take only two or three pills and you are sure to knock it out. I think it is call Z-pack (Zythromax) or something. Maybe someone else will know what I am talking about. The anestesia guy told me he would not do it if I was not well and did not get this script to clear me up before surgery. You should call your family doc and ask them about it. It does matter with anestesia.
  19. Don't worry.....it'll be okay. I had my surgery last Friday, 02/19/10, and I was really excited until a few days before. Then I was scared. Even in the O/R on the morning of my surgery, I remember watching the nurse put my shot of heprin in my leg to help prevent blood clots during surgergy, and I was thinking, I could just jump right of this table and take off......but I didn't. Even going into the O/R itself, I kept thinking, this is scary. But it's okay, and the post op pain really isn't all that bad--at least I didn't think that it was. Just take a deep breathe, close your eyes, and think of how awesome you'll look some time down the road, and how much better you'll feel physcially. You'll be fine!!!!:cursing:

    Very Frustrating Doctors Appt .

I do hope you can get the revision done soon, I do know what it feels like to really work hard at losing it only to regain it so rapidly because of the PCOS. It's so frustrating, that is where I am at now! I can look at someone else eat something and gain 10 lbs just from smelling it! Thats how bad it is for me. Then I just give up and though I'm not a horrible eater, I'm not the best either. So frustrating! Hang in there! Ping me anytime you want to vent, I do understand the PCOS hell!
  21. I was diagnosed with bipolar at the age of 26 or so. Have had 3 major manic episodes, 2 of which landed me in the hospital. Escaped the hospital by the skin of my teeth the third time. I've had my ups and downs since then. Been doing great for about 3 years now, stable on meds. I too had to meet with a psychiatrist before surgery and was completely honest. She talked a lot about addiction transfer (I have other addictions besides food). I was successful loosing all my excess weight in about 10 months. 30 pounds has crept back on. I plan to loose 20 of it, I got just a little to thin, or so people tell me. As long as I loose enough to get back into my jeans I'll be happy.
  22. I gained 65 pounds during my first (and only because of extreme complications) pregnancy and had a 4 1/2 pound baby. And he was born two months early. If I didn't gain so much weight he would have been smaller and may not have made it. That was 10 years ago. My goal weight (150) is my pre-pregnancy weight. I've got a long way to go. It is doable, I just have to be patient. I do fit into clothes from three years ago, so I guess that's something to be happy about.
  23. Hello Everyone, I am post op day 10 and extremely tired after walking 2 miles today. Since my surgery I have been walking daily but only in the house or when going to the store which has been every other day. When I was walking it felt as if I can feel my internal organs, it is kind of weird. Has anyone else experience this same feeling? How long before I can walk without feeling extremely tired? Prior to surgery I was walking about 6 miles a day

    4/19/07 My LEGS ARE TINGLING!

4/19/07 Goodness!!! My legs are tingliing!! So today I tried to make up for the past two days on eating. I think I might have eaten more than I should have tho. For breakfast I had 1/2 cup Total Cereal with 1 cup of skim milk. ( i use the milk left over to take my medication) For lunch I had 1 1/2 tacos from Taco Bell. Just meat and cheese only. My hubby and I were out and he wanted TB real bad....so i went and ordered a kids 2 taco meal. Gave my daughter one taco and one for me. She ate half her taco and i ate her other half. I also had a pintos and cheese. I probably consumed 400 calories in one sitting but i made up for it at dinner time. For dinner I made a pork chop with my all fave SHAKE N BAKE...lol...I ate 3 bites of that.....yum......Then i attempted something that really shouldnt EVER be done again... I tried to eat a baked potatoe with all my FAT FREE stuff..... NOTE TO SELF: NEVER put FAT FREE butter, FAT FREE sour cream, and cheese on a baked potatoe.....YUCK....i took 2 bites and it all went straight into the trash...i said screw this....id rather eat smaller portions and enjoy it than eat yucky fat free stuff that makes me want to puke when it touches my mouth.... At least I tried right? So I tried to clean up the kitchen today and make a concious effort to clean up the house but i been DRAGGING all day. I kept telling myself I need to workout......FINALLY at 730 i said thats it go do it...and i did... Why is it that lately...(past 4-5 days) my body is struggling to walk 30 minutes on a treadmill? I been trying my best to keep going. I turned on a movie and I been trying to get into one while i walk and for some reason after 10 minutes im extremely tired and feel like i cant go on. Well it was hard...but i made it 30 minutes....1 mile....not much to some of you...but to me it was extremely hard. My legs were tingling and everything...whats with that? Im hoping my hard work Im putting into this really pays off. I think I will have a fat free no sugar added fudgcicle tonight....man....what a day. So is it bad if i just sit on my butt the rest of the night? I guess I feel being 360 lbs right now, it would be asking a lot of me to do more than what im currently doing....am i wrong? Seriously.....do you guys think i should be pushing myself harder? I dunno OK......im gonna go watch "Notes on a Scandal" I rented it today.....its break time.... (funny when i say its break time i end up sitting here for at least another 30 minutes) Tata for now!

    fustrated #3 nothing has changed

Ok so i had my 3rd fill one month ago. I now have 5.6CC and in the first week i lost 4lbs.....and that is it!!:smile2: Once i started eating solids i have maintained. In total i have lost about 35lbs..in the last 7 months. i am only 1/3 away from my goal and i have ZERO restriction. One night i was able to eat about 10oz of MEAT! and to top it off i had about 2oz of mash potatoes. I have been keeping to 1200-1500 cal per day and about 65+ grams of protein. I am working out 2-3 times a week. I just started going to Zumba classes and at home i work on tummy crunches. It just seems my body is refussing to give up any FAT. I have not been perfect with the Diet.... with 3 small kids it seems i am always surrounded by food and so i find myself eating cookies, crackers, godfish, chips... and ofcourse those things go down well:sneaky: I have my next appt in 4 weeks. I would be somewhat happy to be able to loose a total of 10 lbs before then. I am guessing my Dr will give me another 1CC... I read alot of blogs and hear people say that they " are at their sweet spot" I would truely be happy if i could loose 1 lbs a week...more importantly to see iches come off!! I hope soon i will be able to have a more positive Blog. thanks for hearing me out... its good to vent!:wink2:
