Psychologist And Surgeron Appointments
lydiajohnston611 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay because I'm the type of person looks to have my ducks in a row. I have my psychologist and surgeron appointments next week and I really like to have a rough idea of what's going to happen. I know each person has there own experience but I figure/assume there is some basics that they all follow. So if someone or someones can give me an idea of is going to happen...I would love it! Thanks. The psychologist told me that my appointment will be about 3-4 hours. Is that normal? I don't think I can talk about myself for that long...I'm actually quite boring! lol Then I figure the surgeron is a meet and greet type appointment and then will discuss why I'm here and what surgery would be best for me kind of thing. Any help would be lovely! Thanks y'all! -

I was at Safeway last week and in the deli section they had "crackers" that were made entirely from cheese - four different flavors. They're nice and crunchy. Of course, I love anything made with cheese. But, no carbs, and several grams of protein in them. You can make your own too, which I've done, but I have a hard time baking them for the right amount of time to get them crunchy. (There's a recipe on these forums for them). -
Hi :-) I mainly post on a different site-but am pretty desperate for imput and hope to broaden my search-hope you'll indulge me :-) I was banded 2 years ago-get fills and feel some restriction for a couple weeks then lose the feeling (NOT the saline- no leak) I'm filled to 4.25 cc in the smaller band with NO restriction-honest< I can eat anything in preband portions and never pb anymore...my surgeon has checked it and says it looks tight enough under fluro...but I believe food just goes right through ...my fill doc (different man) is willing to add more but has no reason for my feeling no restriction-the only thing I can think of is a weak place in the tubing that is bulging, keeping the saline from moving equally around the band-checking that out means a trip to Mexico-again- to have barium injected instead of saline..which I'll do when I can -BUT if you have had a similar problem or lack of restriction with plenty of saline I really love to hear your story-thanks so much!!

I am for sure slowing down when I eat; It also takes me 10 or so minutes after I eat to feel full. I did not think I would still be so restricted after just getting the band and no fill. I can eat the hamburger patty off of a burger and I am satisfied. I have ate the bottom piece of the bun before; but that causes the ear pain; won't do that anymore. Another thing; I thought you were not supposed to be able to eat bread with the band; and I have read where people eat toast or a bagel...I can eat the bread but I think eventually it swells causing the ear pain; I did go to the Chiropractor and to get "adjusted" and my back feels alot better. Wednesday will be my 4 week anniv and I go to the Dr on Thursday for a weigh in; I have stayed away from the scale lately. Is a hamburger patty alot to eat for someone 4 weeks post op? Thanks everyone!

I am eating anything I want now. I am supposed to be getting a fill this week; but I have postponed it due to our vacation at the end of this month. Good Luck on your journey!

Hello all. I am new and having a few problems. One is that I need a fill and still can't get one for another 3 weeks. I am eating much less than I would have before surgery altho not the best foods but still gaining. I can't wait for my first fill. But I still don't understand how I can gain by eating less!!!!!!!! Secondly, I have been having increasing problems with food getting stuck. Some have said PB but after reading about it it doesn't seem like it. I can get food stuck on the first or last bite, it doesn't matter. I do think that I should still chew better but not sure if that is the problem. My food gets stuck and the pain in my throat, not my chest. I have never brought the food back up but have tried to drink and I can feel that slowly come back up and I will spit it out and it will do it again until the fluid is gone. Many times I can feel the food finally work its way down having the feeling of someting move in from my throat to my chest area and stomach. And yes, it is quite painful. I am calling the drs. today as I have discussed this with them before. But just curious. I was prescribed Flexeril right after surgery for esophagial spasms so maybe that could be another cause. I just don't know. I was just hoping to find someone with a similar experience. thanks to you all. cindy

I have three weeks of post-op liquid diet and am almost two weeks through it. I'm allowed to have unflavored Greek yogurt, skyr, and sugar-free fat-free puddings on my "liquid" diet and I find those help a lot. Also, warm savory things help—phở broth, miso soup, chicken broth. And the Fairlife nutrition shakes that taste exactly like chocolate milk seem to assuage my hunger. It is better now than it was immediately post-op, for what it's worth.

I love how simple things are such great accomplishments! Congrats on your towel covering up all of you! That's awesome. I'm waiting to see if I will have a three week stall (I'm at 2 weeks tomorrow post op). If there is a stall, your post has relieved me. Thank you!

Seeking Bandsters with 50-65 pounds to lose
linda1195 replied to linda1195's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Really glad to hear from you all. Makes me feel somewhat better. I hope I have sleep apnea. Isn't that crazy? I can't self-pay. I guess I could, but since we've been paying 13,000 for health insurance for years, these folks can pay out! I have anthem b/c. Anyone else have this insurance and what was your experience with it? I called them myself and they said there was no waiting period and I needed a doctor's authorization. Sounded easy, but I am sure there is a lot more involved. Was hoping to get banded the 2nd week of Dec., but may be Jan. I want all the input I can get! Thanks. Linda -
My TT is in 4 weeks and my Lap Band Surgeon said I MUST be UNFILLED

Hi: The most important thing about post tummy tuck is making sure that you've got enough nutrition to heal well. So, don't be concerned about 1,000 calories a day. Be happy to maintain. I had tummy tuck with muscle repair, but my port stayed where it was (top of tummy - just under middle of rib cage). I think I got refilled at either 3 or 4 weeks after tummy tuck. By then it was not too uncomfortable to get into the proper position for a fill in that area. You'll be surprised at how numb some areas are after the initial healing time. So, it may not be that uncomfortable. They'll probably fill you gradually because that's the most safe way to approach fills. Best wishes. Can't wait to see pictures or hear your comments. You're gonna love your flat tummy! Sue -
Just got back from the bariatric clinic weigh in. This was my first week with eating real food and even though I was eating around 700-850 cal a day, I still only lost a pound this week. Guess my system is not used to eating real food after so long on watery stuff and mush:( Hopefully next week starts to pick it up. Other than that, I'm feeling really good. Already started to pack up a couple outfits I can't wear anymore to give a friend of mine that is getting lap band soon. Time to start shopping again

I think as long as you like it and can tolerate it, then drink it. Slim Fast is still one of my favorites. It does come in Low Carb version if you can find it. They usually have coupons and good deals on it too. Rule of thumb, don't buy tubs or crates of anything pre-surgery because chances are you won't like them post op. Just buy samples and once you have surgery figure out what you do like and what you don't. The liquids phase is only a few weeks anyway, your #1 concern at first will be getting all your fluids in. Whatever you can tolerate is what you should be drinking.

Ok so tomorrow I start my 2 week diet. It's not completely liquid as I get a bar a day but still won't be easy. The thing is that for the past six months I had been talking about how the day before I would go all out on food and have a wonderful steak dinner. Well I've been sick for the last three days and have had no appetite. Today I had oatmeal for fb and a lunchables for lunch. I'm not craving ANYTHING. The only reason I feel I should eat is bc this is it for a while you know. Although with time I will be able to enjoy those foods again, it just feels like I need to gobble it all down. But not tonight, tonight I'm having baby carrots and grilled chicken for dinner. And it's only because I need my Protein after the kick ass workout I did. If I did go out I would probably be forcing myself to eat. Let's hope I feel the same the next three days as I heard they are the hardest lol Ok blabbing over -

Hi there What are u eating at the moment can u give us a run down of your typical day menu ? Sounds like u could be too tight , not chewing enough or bad food choices . I at the moment was how you was , no restriction and waiting my first fill , everything I do now is on pure will power , its very hard but Im damn sure Im not gaining the weight ive lost (we have worked to hard for that) Although my band still does its job and curbes my hunger , I had a bad few days where I grazed last week . So this week Ive have got back on track and Im following the hospitals diet sheets . Were u given any ? S x:thumbup:

You pouch has stretch sensors in it which signal the brain when you're full. Following surgery those sensors are temporarily ineffective during the initial healing process. Nothing to worry about and a blessing in helping you get your protein and water intake in. Within a few weeks you'll start getting full on much smaller quantities. Keep in mind that it's important to get ALL of your doctor's recommended protein in every day. Equally important to get as close to 64 oz of water a day as possible. Dehydration can land you back in the hospital in a heartbeat. You're doing great and you're gonna love the new you!!

When I got my first fill I had enough restriction that the 1/2 bottle of Water they wanted me to drink afterwards was feeling a little dicey. The nurse said not to worry if in about two weeks I felt as though the restriction went away. She said that was fairly common in first fills, and to see if I could go another two weeks before getting my second fill. Sometimes part of the first fill gets absorbed into the band and you lose the restriction. The absorbtion does not usually happen in later fills. So, I wouldn't worry if the band has slipped or anything. :biggrin1: Good luck, Jo Ann

Has anyone been told your losing too much?
allielee replied to dc0520's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are probably weak from the surgery itself not the weight loss. I lost 20 first week as well and now I am losing about 10lbs a month. If you are getting in protein and plenty of water and taking your vitamins you are good. Don't worry before you know it the scale will slow down and may even stall for awhile. It's normal. I keep track of my weight on my fitness pal so I can see that I may lose a lot then stall then lose.. -
Be very careful, with this one. Just because you can feel the port does not mean it where it's supposed to be. For example I had surgery on aug 20 and had no issues with surgery. 6 weeks later after going to the surgeon for my first fill my port flipped. I could feel my port and to me didn't have any kind of pain or weirdness to think it had. Not trying to freak you out but you should jut go to your family doctor and ask for an X-ray to make sure it's where it needs to be. And of its just a muscle then great but I'd rather know sooner than later.

I also heard it's harder to get you off the breathing machines when you're coming out of surgery. I think that was what made me quit pre-surgery. I've been smoking again for a few weeks now but we're going to be quitting again soon. I just had a hard time there handling the no smoking AND barely eating. For yall that have quit again post surgery, how do you handle the mouth craving? You know wanting to snack & stuff post op?
-
I am a smoker(trying to be nonsmoker) who was sleeved. I quit for 6 wks before my surgery, then started about 2 weeks after. I started wearing the patch this weekend. I noticed this weekend, that my indigestion got 10 x worse whenever I smoked. So, as an experiment I stopped smoking on Saturday and started wearing the patch. I still have indigestion, but it's not nearly as bad. I know smoke effects your esphougas and stomach, I'm not sure but somehow only being one month out of surgery and still healing it's doing a number on me. I'd rather not smoke and feel good, than get my fix and feel like crap drinking Maalox all day long. It's not worth it.

Well i finally met with the surgeon today and luckily I've had all my testing with the exception of blood, chest xray and NUT consult. So in a perfect world I would be planning my surgery date....BUT.....due to a few meds I take daily( for anxiety and depression) I may be held up another three months. It seems that since I can't swallow pills post surgery I will have to crush my meds. If my meds can't be crushed then I have to try alternative meds that can be crushed. However, I would have to stay on these "new" crushable meds for 3 months to make sure they work before the surgeon will give me the green light. Anyone have this issue?

So I have a friend who has RNY in 2009. She started off at 410 pounds and at surgery day she was 398 pounds. 6 months later she was 185 pounds. She was telling me all about how she felt and how everything worked for her. She felt she was losing too fast and was scared and nervous. She also wasn't use to being able to feel her bones or other people feeling them either. She was losing more down to 174 lbs and felt she was losing too much, so she asked her doctor about gaining back up to 185 lbs. She has stayed within 10 lbs of this weight for the last 4 years, she has recently gone back down to 175 lbs after she had a tummy tuck. She hasn't had any complications besides 1 stuck moment because she ate taco salad too soon, she said she was 8 weeks out at that time. I'm so lucky to have someone who has already done this and been successful to be around to help. So with her story I'm even more encouraged and happy to move on with this journey.
