    My Band Has Slipped

I've been struggling with slipping for nearly 4 months now, and finally went in for revision surgery last week. Just do what your dr recommends and know that you can and will get better. I am! It's discouraging, but it can be overcome.

    Therapy....

Has anyone considered or is in therapy for weightloss/body image issues??? I know people do not like talking about therapy and please dont take it that I am snooping into your life....the question that has been on my mind for a while....mainly because I'm planning to have revision surgery in June and wondering would it be benefitial for me because I've been overweight since age 8, and since having the lapband for the last 7 years has failed me... I guess I'm just afraid of failure again and want to help myself as much as I can...
  4. I couldn’t help but reply. A friend of mine had lap band done at 15, and just recently had revision surgery for vsg at 23. The surgery was initially successful but she slowly gained all her weight back. I live in New York and almost all of the surgeons on the team at Mt. Sinai (uptown) don’t perform the lapband due to low success rates
  5. I'm looking for some information on those who have had a revision from sleeve to bypass. I'm 5 months post-op from my vsg surgery and my stomach has severe stenosis and two strictures along with gastroparesis. They are unable to treat it with dilation so I'm going in on Monday to have a revision. I just don't know what to expect. Is there anyone out there with any advice? 6. It does work for many people. I know a few. The problem as I see it is that if there are complications people tend to blame the patient or their eating issues. The honest truth is for some people it just is NOT a good fit no matter if they follow the rules or not. It has been hard to deal with the attitude that if you don't lose or your having complications that the person not the band is to blame. But I do see alot of that attitude on this site and with the WLS community. For me is is just alot of medical complications that I am trying to navigate around to figure out how I can work WITH my band. I have a good friend that had to have her band out becuase she was allergic to the silicon. And I sometimes wonder if my body just wants it out and it out and is trying to tell me that. If I ever get it out I would just revise to the sleeve. I am not eligible for the RNY per my doctor. The malabsorption would be a problem for me. At the time I was banded the sleeve was not an option just band or RNY. I will say that I got banded with about 8 people and that two lost 100 pounds. Those two have since gained about 25-30 back two years out. Not bad if you ask me I would be happy. Not perfect but better than me. Two gained all their weight back and a bit more. (our doctor won't give you fills in the beginning unless you lose alot of weight first and in between fills). They never really lost and thus could not get fills in the band and never got back on track. Since they were not losing they were embarrased to see the doctor an get yelled at. After getting yelled at a couple times they didn't go back. Two people lost 80 pounds. One got pregnant and gained it all day and than some. She lost her medical insurance and so no more fills now. The other got a divorce and asked for her fill to be totally removed as stress was making her PB all the time and she was losing to fast. She gained about half the weight back. The rest of us lost about 25-30 pounds and are at a standstill. One person I know lost 76 of the 150 she wanted to lose but is at a standstill for the last three years. The success stories are wonderful to hear but not the norm in my group. But here is the thing. For me even losing 25 makes me feel so much better. And when the fill is gone I gain period. So I know I use the band as a tool because I struggle MORE without it. I know it work at least for maintenance now. And it has helped my health so I would do it again. I am just afraid of fills because my body overreacts to fills. I need to lose another 75 pounds to make my goal. I have NOT given up. I figure my body tries to make a statement with every fill that it wants the darn thing OUT!! . I am just trying to figure out how to use my band in a way my body won't fight. But I won't be surprized if I have to get it taken out at some point. RNY you just have to be careful. I have had a couple friends almost die of malnutrition issues with the RNY issues. But others did fine. You just have to be on top of your health and know when to get to a doctor if something is wrong. Waiting or thinking it would work out and not going to ER has caused a few people some issues. So the labs are a good thing. For me more than 50% of the time I have been banded I have had no fill at all. I am sure that is a large part of my not losing as fast. WIth no fill you are basically on your own like pre band and back to willpower. I could even tell I had a band. It is a process.........................

    Band to VSG or Bypass

After 10 years with the band, I finally had the revision to by-pass on December 9th, 2016. Being the holiday month and going through all of the holiday parties, this was a pretty difficult month for me as I was mainly on liquids. I was surprised about the initial depression I experienced. However, I have lost about 28 pounds in a month+ (from 205 to 177), my diabetes is virtually gone, my blood pressure is 117/70, and I am now getting my energy. I feel great. I have had no problems with eating correctly, getting my liquid and Protein in, etc. Have periods of feeling very tired, but those are resolving, as well. All in all, I am very happy that I made this decision. I have joined a gym for weight lifting to build muscle mass, joined a support group, taking my supplements, walking, and tracking what I eat. Again, I feel great. Weight loss is slower than I thought, but it is coming off and that is good enough. I do not look forward to some hair loss, but it comes back, so what? I had scar tissue from the band (lots of it) so the sleeve was not recommended. Best of luck, Gail
  9. Also my cousin who had the DS also has a friend who 2 years ago I believe had a lap band revision to DS and she's not successful at all in the process, either way if you want it to work and are determined it will work, for me in all my failed attempts in weight loss it wasn't the getting there that's hard for me it's the maintaining, for years I could get to my goal but then would gain back plus. From what I've seen and from what I've read I believe RNY is the best option for me. Goodluck on your journey, ultimately it's your decision so do your research, find testimonies of people who have had both and take some time to carefully consider which is right for you.
  10. never heard of a revision from sleeve to ESG... which ESG is basically the sleeve. They sew thru your mouth into your stomach... Every revision i have seen on here is from sleeve to bypass or some form of bypass like mini bypass or that Duodenial switch or however you spell it.
  11. i saw Dr. Cribbins in April and was scheduled the next month for a revision to a sleeve. i put it off until September. they are really quick. no 6 month wait for me. Dr. Cribbins was one of the first in Dallas to do lapband surgery, so he has been doing these for years. i made appt with Dr. Barker and ended up walking out bc his waiting room was so full of people and i really hate the feeling of being a number and not the patient. went and saw Dr. Nicholson who does the two step surgery, which I did not want. stuck with Dr. Cribbins. he is awesome. i actually work with a nurse, who used to be the nurse of Dr. Hamn, ( dr.cribbins partner) and all she could say is how wonderful Dr. Cribbins is.
  12. When I lived in Plano I went to Dr Cribben's talk about lap band. My insurance wouldnt pay for him, only Dr Gonzales. I feel like I had good care and the procedure was one at Medical Center, Dallas. I have since done a revision to a sleeve with Dr A Ortiz in TJ. I also felt I had excellent care.
  13. Dr. Cribbins did my band 10 years ago. going for a revision to sleeve in three weeks. Dr. Cribbins does revision in one surgery. Dr. Nicholson does it in two surgeries one week apart. not sure why because the cut is made around the scar tissue from the band and not through it. Dr. Cribbins is the best. No doubt! I believe Dr. Cribbins is the director of Bariatric surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano.

    Bundle of nerves

I'm in relief tears, because you understand what I'm feeling. Thank you for answering me in such detail. BP is like a journal entry for me that responds to what I'm expressing. I love having this support system 💜. My actual support system is selectively small, by my personal choice. I'm private and respect other's rights to their privacy as well. I have 2 people in my support group who are Post-op, one had to revise from vsg to rny (major complications after revision this year). I read these posts and truly value everyone sharing their very personal experiences. This is like Cliff Notes for Bariatric Surgery.

    Band To Sleeve (New Member)

I had the band to sleeve revision on 3/22/12, and am loving it! If you are on facebook, I would recommend the facebook page "Failed Lap-Bands and Realize Bands". It's a fantastic source of information as well, and just about everyone on there has either had a revision, or are trying to get one. I had my band in 2007 and it didn't work well for me. Through various trials and errors, we ended up emptying it in 2009. I was "stuck" and "sliming" every single day! No more!! Since getting the sleeve, life has been so much more enjoyable!
  16. Yes definitely get it out sooner than later. I had a band put in - in 2002 and just removed this January 24. It was severely eroded - and had done nothing for the longest time - except make me vomit and wear all the enamel off my teeth, so I have had to have extensive dental work. I am now 4 months healed and am going to Dr Garcia in Mexico for a revision. I couldn't wait any longer here in Canada - because of my job I had to find a time to suit the company, so in 2 weeks from TODAY I will be sleeved. Good luck on your journey - like Nichole said you will find lots of us here.

    Lottery Winner!

You will find it life changing. I refer to my revision as my chance at a "do over"
  18. Went back to the Doc's office yesterday and I was right. The new port which is smaller has less capacity therefore I need less fluid to get me back to the ("sweet spot") level I was previously enjoying. Removed .6cc's. The end result was adding .4cc - new level 5.4cc's brought me to the same level I was at with the old port ( 6.15 cc). Was able to eat last night. ( First time in two days).....Felt sooooooo good. Back on track and feel great. WHAT A JOURNEY !!:smile2:

    MAY 2019 date

Had my sleeve on May 23 and had to go to ER twice over the weekend for pain and dehydration. Now pain almost gone but still get something like esophageal spasms. Driving me crazy and very worried that it won’t go away and that I will have to revise to bypass down the road. Psychologically I am really hurting and questioning this decision. Very anxious.
  20. I had an endoscopy done first. I was 2 months out and I was not even able to hold a sip of water down. I was admitted to the hospital for dehydration and malnutrition and the endoscopy was done there. The GI doctor found a large marginal ulcer that I am still having problems with. It was found in November 2015 and I will have a 3rd scope in 2 months and if it is still not healed then I go back to my surgeon. This scares me because I had the sleeve to bypass revision due to reflux, so I can not go back to the sleeve. I was told they would attach my stomach to a different portion of my intestines.

    hernia development

I had the same thing. I was constantly throwing up due to the hernia. My surgeon just corrected the hernia and made the diaphragm hole smaller without a bypass revision. . My problem now is that I’m struggling with that stuck feeling and feeling a bit nauseous. My surgery was just 2 weeks ago, so still figuring it all out

    Band removal denial...

Can you appeal. I had been denied for lap band and appealed and won. I have since had it removed and revised to sleeve. Your band needs to come out for sure. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. The liquid diet is a pain. I was an emotional mess when I had to do liquids for two days before surgery. It is so worth it though for the sleeve! Just get your mind set and do it. I went to Mexico for my band, so I understand what you are going through. I also have three kids. You will do just fine. The doctors are great there. I would have returned for my revision from the band to sleeve but my insurance took off the exclusion for WLS. Your kids are going to have a healthier, happier mom as a result of the wonderful sleeve. I know it is overwhelming sometimes right before surgery. Just know you are making a great choice. The sleeve really has changed my life. I feel so great and I love that I can keep up with my kids. I know you will have the same experience. Best wishes and keep us posted! You are going to do great!!!

    Lap Band To Gastric Bypass

Johnnybots...I was a lapband to RNY revision. My lapband came out 2010 and I had my RNY 7/11/2012. My lapband prolapsed and emergency surgery had to be done to take it out. I had suffered through a lapband revision 2 years after I had it put in and then the 2 years later the prolaps. I too did well with it but, after it came out I gained some back and decided I needed to stop the weight gain before I gained it all back. I've had a few infection issues with the RNY but, I don't regret having it done. Looking forward to when I feel 100% with it all. So far the weight loss is going well. I'm a slower loser but, still happy with the results. Good luck with your journey

    For best results....

Question for vets...I’m 6 weeks out, getting all my fluids, protein in and carbs about 20g. I’m wanting to make sure I’m getting maximum weight loss in these first 6 months (I’m a revision and terrified of not being successful this time) but I see conflicting information about either keeping calories low (around the 600 mark) or eating more to get calories in the 800-1000 range because “your not eating enough”. What is your experience when in the losing phase?
