  1. Ask your doc if you can let one go flat to get rid of the carbonation before drinking it? The carbonation is the issue with the drink and unfortunately they don't have a water flavoring that tastes like soda, but that would be a good. Maybe someone should write crystal light? They have alcohol flavorings, so why not soda?
  2. ok, so here is the deal. i had the nasojejunum tube placed yesterday in IR....not as bad as i thought (way better than chest tubes and drains) but today my nose and my left face hurts. this is a temporary as i see the specialist wed and hopefully have an OR date for a jeujuostomy tube placed surgically like my last one. so i have to suck this up for about 2 weeks. i do not think i can handle much more than that. i bought a backpack and placed the bag, joey, syringes, alcohol wipes, etc so i can be on the go if i feel like it. not gonna feed during the night this time....will shoot for the 15 hours day time. yeah, the tube sucks, but i keep thinking temporary, and i know i will feel stronger and be able to socialize and beat this malnutrition thing. nice not to urp, vomit, etc.plus, with the 900cc of flushing, i can get hydrated even if i do not take much in orally. that said.....here's to protein and health!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH AND THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT!!!!

    Stomach pains

I was sleeved on 12/28. It took about 4 days for the majority of the pain to go away. Three days later I was back at work with no pain. Be careful about what you eat. I didn't know it, but I was causing myself gas pains by eating sugar free popsicles (they contain sugar alcohols that my stomach didn't like) and sugar free Jell-O (don't know what sugar substitute they use, but my stomach didn't like it either). The only thing I could safely eat for the 1st 2 weeks was low carb protein shakes, cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup.

    Too emotional and moody?

While I expect a lot of it is hormone change, I sort of see it also as coming off of a lifetime addiction. Watching people I love battle drug and alcohol addiction, I know that extreme irritability, depression and mood swings are all part of the package when you try to detox or break an addiction. Specifically on Atkins, I did induction for 2 weeks and I was such an emotional, irritable mess I couldn't handle it and I had to stop and revert back. Once I brought carbs and sugar back into my diet it was as though I was magically re-aligned again.

    Dry mouth

Hi newgrandma, I have arthritis in my knees right now but my mom has it in her fingers and other joints and my dad has it in his hip and back. He's had a hip replacement and invertebrea drilling before the age of 70. I have no cartilage between my knee cap and leg bone and develop spurs from the impact. Last year I had the spurs smoothed off by my surgeon but my diagnosis is stage 4 chondromalacia and he says I'm too young for knee replacements. I function OK on an anti inflammatory diet, i have salmon oil everyday, no wheat, try to limit alcohol (being sleeved has made it easier lol) and when I do mountain stuff like skiing and hiking I take lots of turmeric. I also ice afterwards. When it's really bad I'll take tylenol arthritis, it seems to work ok but i have to be in tears to take meds. I've seen what over medicating has done to my dad, he started loosing his mind at 65 and now that he's 70 he has officially been diagnosed with Parkinson's. I also think over medicating leads to cancer of the pancreas. Has your surgeon offered to do laproscopy and dremmel off any rough bits/spurs? Where do you have your arthritis? I can tell when I do my Tuesday yoga class that my L hip feels sharp when I do certain motions. I hope I'm not following too closely in my dad's footsteps.

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

mkardh is right. Not only does it thin your blood but alcohol is a irritant. Your stomach still has a fresh suture line and drinking alcoholl can cause impaired healing and irritation. Imagine if you will, pouring alcohol on a open wound. YOUCH!

    coffee

That's a gray area had you not had surgery, right now or especially while still starting healing you need to stay well hydrated. for your stomach to mend best. Basically it comes down to that the cafeine makes you urinate. It's over rated to say it's a cause of dehydration when you read about it, they say it takes more than 4 cups a day or at least 6 -8 cups to be problimatic in causing dehydration, yet also when you consume a cup you let out many times more fluids than just that cup of coffee from it's cafeine content. Drink allot and you'll pee out quarts. When I was post surgery in hospital, I was roomed with a man who had a by pass years before and needed a hernia operation, he plainly said that once he started drinking coffee it did in fact cause him enough dehydration and it's discomfort to quit altogether after trying that. A small portion may not hurt, but the coffee has enough cafeine and is a diaretic and causes your body water flood out each cup and tea about 20% cafeine of coffee. If you do get dehydration problems some worst things you could do is drink coffee or alcohol because it will become worse.

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

Well, I asked the hubbie what he thought and he just said (he's a phd chemist) that alcohol is a pretty strong acid and will hinder the healing of the cut down your stomach. We both think you'll be fine though. So if alcohol is an acid, so is coffee which I was going to have one tomorrow. Now I'm kind of thinking I should just wait a little. Everyone keeps mentioning liver but it's the gallbladder that we lose from losing too much weight too fast, it can't cope with all of the fats (or something-I don't know the processes involved). Since alcohol is fat soluable, I'd think that it will also be hard on our gall bladders while we loose weight. I know I'll have something every now and then during this process but I don't want to loose my gallbladder. That makes for a permanent careful diet from what my buddie at work told me, he can't have coffee etc and not supposed to drink (poopy!) BTW, to whomever said alcohol is a stimulant, it's a depressant (and not good to have if you're already clinically depressed) but you're right, it interacts with lots of meds.I hope people just get information from this discussion, it's too bad so many are so heated up.

    Alcohol

Donewithdieting,I hope, really really hope you can find a way to stop drinking, quickly. I started smoking at 4 months out and this December on holiday, decided to "cut myself some slack" and have one drink every day with everyone else.Just one! I have also been trying ro cut out the 5 cups of tea I was drinking every day! Since being home I am struggling as I feel like a drink every day.The first week I had one every third night.Second week every second night and this week I had a drink 5 nights out of the week. I have stopped losing weight even though I am eating little and I get up in the morning and all of a sudden Im thinking of a drink tonight. I HAVE NEVER,EVER BEEN A DRINKER!Alcohol just didnt do anything for me and tasted bad! I realized this morning that this is the way to get into trouble with alcohol! It happens so fast and who would think that one drink can get into a persons head like this? But this is definitely how transfer addiction starts. Thanks OP for asking this question as I needed to see this thread and take responsibility for the fact that I miss food at night and I am trying to replace "something nice" that I've missed so much and cant figure out what it is, with alcohol. Of course no one around me knows about this as I am a very conservative person and I am very ashamed of the smoking (quit and start all the time now) So Donewithdieting, seek council this week.Dont wait.Being an alcoholic is an all consuming thing. It steals lives worse than fat does.Maybe just go to an AA meeting. It seems to really work.Work on a plan for yourself to change this!Change your routine, tell someone about this! As for myself I am going to tell my friend (accountability partner) and I will start going for a walk (run) in the evening and go to bed earlier.and maybe I will find myself a shrink to help me figure out why I always need a "thing". Dieting and food and being fat was my thing for years. It seems Im just trying to replace it now.

    Alcohol

The various issues are as follows - Initial healing of the sleeve - a few weeks or months. Empty calories - avoid throughout weight loss period. Liver health - our livers are typically in bad shape to begin with from being obese (hence the "liver shrinking" pre-op diet that some surgeons impose,) and the liver is further taxed during rapid weight loss by its role in metabolizing all that fat that we are losing, so it doesn't need any more stress from alcohol (my doc is also a liver transplant specialist, so he's a bit anal on this point!) - no alcohol throughout the weight loss period. Transfer addiction - many/most who are obese can be considered to be food addicted (as can many "normal" weight people,) so when the focus of the addiction (food) is removed it is very easy for that addiction to move to something else - alcohol, gambling, shopping, etc. - avoid alcohol forever. These are the major issues regarding alcohol and the sleeve - different docs will emphasize some or all of these issues in their recommendations. We are all adults here, so you can make your own decisions in following or exceeding your surgeon's guidelines.

    Alcohol

I have friends that are less than six months out already drinking like they never had surgery. I am 3 days out of surgery. I won't have alcohol anytime soon. Just wondering what everybody thought. My nutritionalist said to refrain "as long as I could" lol.

    Alcohol

I am going to be very-- very honest. If you have ANY problem with addictions ie: smoking, eating, biting nails anything I enplore you NOT to drink any alcohol after your WLS. Before I had my surgery I read and researched alot. This information about alcohol was brought up. I personally did not drink much (maybe a glass of wine a couple times a month) Never drank for 27 years. No desire/need to. Well fast forward to today, I drink wine every single day alot. Gained 10# since August. And now I want a cigarette ( I quit 16 years ago). The pull to addicition is so strong every single day it drives me crazy. Now to take a look at me and my life you would never think I would ever have a problem. I now doing research on alcoholism. ICK this is no fun that I changed addictions. If anyone who reads this gets this please please please do not even start with alcohol. NEVER EVER thought it could happen to me. Good Luck

    Alcohol

I only had sips of wine (for Shabbat, we're Jewish) for several months post op. Beyond that, not only did I not want to drink, I had no room to do it! I'd wait at least a few months. The only thing to be very careful about are transfer addictions. As we mourn the loss of our old emotional crutch and coping mechanism (food) it's not uncommon to see people develop other bad habits because they haven't learned to cope without yet. Alcoholism is a real problem for WLS patients. And yes, drinks are empty calories, of course. And while some people can still drink the same way post op I think stories of getting tipsy on just a few sips are more common. I can sip on one mixed drink all night and keep a buzz going, so I'm much more sensitive to alcohol post op. ~Cheri

    Alcohol

My nutritionist recommended a year. Both for healing purposes and also the avoidance of empty calories. She said that sleevers tend to get drunk on only a few sips of alcohol rather than a few drinks! Think of all the money we'll save later on down the road!

    Alcohol

I was asked to refrain from alcohol for 18 months and so that is what I have done. Theoretically I think it takes a few months for your stomach to heal up completely, so I wouldnt touch it until maybe month 5 or 6

How long should did you wait before drinking?

    Drinking... Alcohol anyway...

I agree, we can still do alcohol we just have to be careful about when and how we go about it. Personally, I have sworn if off for 18 months. I made a pact to myself to follow ALL my guidelines to the best that I can for 18 months, and then after that I told myself that I can loosen up but for once in my life, I need to take something seriously. But I know that's just me... I don't judge people who still have a drink here and there, as long as your not telling me your one or two weeks out of surgery trying to do that.

    Drinking... Alcohol anyway...

I think we would be best served leaving our curbside psych consults to the professionals, that's why there is a multidisciplinary approach both pre and post sleeve. I have had some wine post op (I am two months out), but have lost my gusto for it. I used to enjoy a nightly glass with dinner, and a few more on weekends out with my BF. Since my sleeve, my tastes have changed and I don't enjoy it as much. I would not begrudge anyone from doing what they decide to do. That being said, we do have to be careful overindulging in anything to excess. That is what got us here in the first place. I am trying to be cognizant of that on a daily basis, whether it's carbs, chocolate or alcohol.

    Drinking... Alcohol anyway...

Coming from a LOOOOOOONNNGGGG line of alcoholics I have always chosen to stay away from alcohol because I've seen the negative effects it has on people, their health and their family. I always turned to food because that felt safer to me (and look where it got me!) so I will basically echo what everyone else says, not because I want to be a "downer", but because I feel like it should be said. Obviously you have an issue with knowing your "limit" or you never would've needed WLS to begin with and it is dangerous territory to substitute one addiction for another. That is why the amount of alcoholics among WLS is high-people with addictive personalities use one addiction to cope with the loss of another. It doesn't matter if you're escaping using Hostess or Bacardi-they both put you in a bad spot! You've already done so much damage to your body by overeating, you are finally blessed to have the surgery and basically be given a second chance at health and at a month out you feel good about filling your newly constructed stomach with alcohol like you got away with something?! You have an "I'll show them attitiude!" but haven't you already learned that it's YOUR body that suffers? I agree with what others are saying if it really is true that you couldn't make it through your 30th birthday without a drink there are bigger problems you should face. I'm all for drinking in moderation I just feel like those of us with food issues probably have a hard time with "moderation"!

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

Hahahaha! The Darwin awards! Did nobody else notice the OP said she followed her dr's directions of 3 weeks, but the title of the thread is something to the effect of alcohol TWO weeks out. I say do whatever you want, but I really don't see the point of posting this after the fact. Were you planning on having more drinks and the warning replies made you stop? Because that would be pretty legit I guess. If I could give you advice that you would accept graciously I'd tell you to probably call your surgeon BEFORE you do something you're unsure of. Good luck with the rest of your journey

    Fainting Spells and seeing spots

Same thing happened to me . I was on the ground at the grocery store and ambulance took me to the ER had all the tests done came back DEHYDARTION,you need 64 oz of water a day ,I got a 20 oz bottle and drink 3 a daay. It gets boring so mix it up crystal light, powerade, what ever keeps you going. Alcohol dehydrates your body so limit that. Good luck hope it nothing serious

Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

I think the best site to post this question will be alcohol anonymous it seems like an addiction I guess the only reason you got this surgery was for cosmetic reasons.. Anyone that I know of would be more concerned about healing instead of alcohol this is a major surgery and we take it very seriously. Also to me numbers don't make sense why would you get operated if you are size 12 ???? 201 lbs ???? A lot of things r not adding up and that's y everyone seems to be frustrated. Drinking... Alcohol anyway...

Ok I know I haven't been very active since just after my surgery but I felt like I had to start helping those going into some thing that can change your future so much. Now let me start by saying that at 6 months out was enjoying my drinks on occasion and when I was at Disney got a little buzzed on occasion, so I come at this probably sounding a bit like a hypocrite so I apologize. lets start by looking at the health issues, you are only a month out of your surgery, you should still be soft foods and yes alcohol is a liquid but it is highly corrosive to the stomach and your stomach is still healing. It can take 8-10 weeks before your stomach is "healed" and more than 6 months before it begins to scar and be considered healed. So there is a health issue to drinking. Put aside the addiction aspect it can cause many issues. I also want to address the fact that you say that you couldn't get past a milestone without drinking, I assume that this is a way that you have celebrated large milestones for most of your life, but one thing you have to keep in mind is that after a procedure like this it is a lifestyle change. You can't have a procedure like this and not change your life going forward. There needs to be a mindset change in the way you think about everything you are about to embark. I was a big foodie before my surgery and used to "enjoy" food well beyond a reasonable limit. But when i went to Disney I had to change the way I looked at food, it was a temptation to over eat and go to far but I know that I will not succeed if I don't make major changes. For those that find people on here rude for trying to help keep in mind that people come on this forum to get help and insight into life before, during and after the surgery, these replies are just trying to help those that might read these posts. While drinking is OK there are cautions that need to be taken, and while it may be OK for some it could be dangerous for others. I am sorry for my rant but it felt like it needed to be said.
