  1. Is MGB an option for you at that practice? The weight loss approaches DS, with fewer side effects, and there's a proven great effect with VSG-->MGB revisions. The DS revision wouldn't do anything for your reflux, so that'd be on borrowed time anyway. The MGB could solve it.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Congratulations to you! Best wishes as you continue! I'm finding my 7th month has really slowed down with the weight loss, but I expected that. I figure it might take 6 more months to get the remaining pounds off -- unless I can find an additional hour to increase exercise!🏋️‍🚵‍♀️🤸‍♂️🤽‍♀️

    liquid diet :( lol

It's funny how treating people like adults make them behave like adults. E.g.: WARNING: DO NOT EAT ... on swimming pools in America. Edit: OP, best of luck. Remember the point is to lose weight to shrink your liver. It's all you need to do.

Wow so liberal! And we lost the same amount of weight and you did it without starving. No fair!. 😂

What do you guys think of this video?

Haha loved it, he has some very good points. He is right about you can't loose weight and build muscle, sure you can loose fat and build muscle but your scale probably won't move .

    liquid diet :( lol

With my lap band surgery, I had the 2 week pre op diet, which consisted of two shakes per day and one meal of 3 - 4 oz lean protein and 2 cups of non-starchy veggies and I had to lose 7 pounds. I was afraid of not losing that amount of weight in two weeks, so I started 3 weeks before surgery. Yeah... HUGE regret doing that. Don't do that. 😂

    liquid diet :( lol

Remember, the liver knows if you're in a calorie deficit because of shakes or because of a calorie deficit in general. ... just kidding. At least you're not with one of the completely insane American programs with months of Optifast because It wIlL maKe yOU lOsE mOAr WeIghT (ok, show me the science, oh you can't, great). Just stick it out. Remember a chicken breast with veggies are a better alternative if you feel like giving up on this insanity.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

UPDATE: All that worry was for nothing. I passed, and the cardiologist was beaming. He had told me 10 days ago he didn’t think I would pass. I laughed and told him: ‘I know I don’t look like a runner, but I used to run 7 miles a day, 5 days a week. I will do this.’ And, I did. IMHO, they go easy on you when you are over 60 (I’m 67). I did 2 thallium stress tests 18 and 15 years ago and THEY.WERE.DIFFICULT. I think that at my age, they just don’t want you to keel over. So, I worried for nothing basically. The techs at Cary Radiology were fabulous! They could not have been nicer! Everything was explained in great detail. They wanted my heart rate to get to 130 which I was fine with. A year ago, I could get to 138 running around a nearby lake. They were constantly asking how I was doing while on the treadmill. I was in for 5 minutes, they were hoping for 4.5 minutes. My bp was 220/140 when I told her I was finished. I knew to jump right onto the table so they could U/S while my heart rate was at peak. I found it interesting that I was fine on the treadmill one minute and almost instantly I knew I was finished. My post treadmill U/S pix were excellent. The cardiologist was very nice. He told me that bariatric surgery is going to be wonderful for lowering my blood pressure. He said I will likely always be on bp meds, but carrying less weight will make a huge difference in my life. He was very encouraging, and Now that the stress test is behind me, I am really excited to move forward.
  9. I'm not excited because I know I'd get better weight loss with DS than with RNY. I'm shallow I guess but really wanted to lose the weight. He told me DS was an option if I only wanted weight loss but RNY would alleviate the acid reflux. I'm likely going to get the RNY but was hoping someone here could tell me that weight loss is also good with this procedure.

Thats awesome! Have people already started to notice/comment? I’m sure you’ll lose those 40lbs I’m still 45 - 65lbs away from my goal weight depending on where I end up.

VSG to RNY - Not excited

You're not excited about a new opportunity to lose the weight that you weren't able to with VSG? Or are you unhappy that your surgeon is recommending RNY instead of DS? My surgeon will only do DS on patients who have out of control diabetes, from what I understand.
  12. I had VSG in November 2016. I never really lost the weight I had hoped (lost about 30 pounds). I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my choices because I really want to get the extra weight off. I recently met with my surgeon to discuss my options and after having a Bravo Endoscopy, we learned I have extremely bad acid reflux (I didn't need a procedure to learn that but whatever). He also stated that I have a hiatal hernia. Today he advised me to undergo gastric bypass which will completely eradicate the reflux. I was hoping to go in for a duodenal switch but he stated that wasn't a good option for me. Does anyone have any experience on vsg to rny with great weight loss results?

Alcohol is a Transfer Addiction !!

Thank you for sharing. Sadly I am in the same position and today is my 3rd day without alcohol and the withdrawals have been so bad that I needed medication from the doctor to get through it. My blood pressure raised at such high levels it was dangerous. All this is such a shock to me and before my bypass back in December 2017 I was never really interested in alcohol but over the last few years my drinking has increased so much so it had taken over my life…I seemed to look forward to the joy it gave me and the quick fix that food no longer could give me. I am hoping I can keep going and start to feel better soon. I hope to learn to live my life without alcohol and the extra weight gain from the late night snacks and start to enjoy eating healthy and to feel alive again! 🙏🏽

What do you guys think of this video?

Advice is sometimes given with the best intentions but everyone is different. You should do the things which work for you. Only you know what is best for you. Listen, learn and experiment with your routines. Find something which is sustainable to achieve your long term goals. In my personal case, I believe the following things contribute to my success. I eat less calories because of surgery. I made a decision to make healthier food choices. I exercise regularly (cardio.) I perform weight training regularly. I feel great. I am losing weight. This is what is important to me.

    < 3 Weeks Until Surgery

It sounds like you're well prepared for your first stage of your post op diet. The only other supplement that some people take for hair health is biotin, that I know of at least. I have no experience with pregnancy after weight loss surgery. I had my son many moons ago when I was at a normal weight, lol. I'm sure you're going to do fabulous on surgery day and thereafter! Just take it day by day and focus on your weight loss and 18 months will sail by! Best wishes!

    having an issue with cravings

First of all, cravings are completely normal. We all want certain foods at certain times because of their taste, nostalgia, or other emotional drivers. That being said, if you feel compelled to "cheat" to satisfy a craving, you might want to sit down and really think about WHY you are craving that food? What emotions, situations, or other factors are driving those feelings and how can you cope with them other than giving in or finding a substitute? The reality is, your surgeon has specific post-op phases/stages for a reason - I promise its not arbitrary. And deviating from it could cause any number of complications, discomfort, etc. This is the really hard part of weight loss surgery - learning to heal our relationship with food so that we are free from diets and cheat meals and trying to rationalize our food choices. If necessary, get a bariatric/eating disorder counselor to help you work through some of this stuff and gain new coping mechanisms. But, long answer short, no you should not given in. Not only because it could make you sick, but because it will perpetuate the cycle you had surgery to break. We are rooting for you.
  17. I am Irish and my family thinks they can make underhanded remarks about my weight ALL THE TIME and they ;augh about it more often than not and they know its hurtful yet they do it all the time and i am so tired of it remarks such as " here comes porky here comes chubby or look it here is fatty it goes right through me and i laugh it off because if you get defensive or if they see they get a rise out of you they only do it even more don't need to be reminded about my weight thank you very very much , so i have to say to you if try make remarks i know it's hard try to ignore it because bullies like to pick on people who feed their ego but they are the weak minded ones they will get theirs one day karma is a beautiful thing trust you ignoring them it makes them crazy again i know its h hard but do your best to just look away you're the better person by not feeding their foolishness they're not worth it, you're worth it, more then you know.
  18. Hi everyone, I am 20 days from surgery (4/18) and I am nervous and excited. I feel prepared but at the same time I feel like I don't know what I am doing. My hospital hasn't been the easiest to work with as far as providing information on what to expect so I have been doing a lot of my own research. It almost feels like my doctors put everyone in the same camp and don't take each person as an individual which is highly annoying for a "Type A"/Planner like myself. I start a full pre-op liquid diet on 4/4 to help shrink my liver and jump-start weight loss before surgery. I am fully stocked up on Fairlife protein shakes (every flavor except coffee) and have unflavored protein powder and collagen to add to soups. What other options should I explore or do you have any recommendations for protein shakes to try? I am fairly nervous about my hair thinning or losing my hair - does anyone have experience with this or prevented this from happening? I started taking collagen about 3 months ago and noticed it has helped strengthen my nails and added hair growth but I am worried this won't be enough in the long run. Any advice is appreciated! Does anyone have any advice on pregnancy after DS? I am mainly going through this process to increase my chances of having children - my husband and I have suffered two miscarriages and I am being told by my OB/GYN that there's nothing they will do for me until I am at a better weight. I am fully committed as I want to start a family but waiting an additional 12-18 months after waiting this long seems like a lifetime. I want to be as prepared as possible for any hurdles or issues we may encounter - thanks in advance! That's a little about me - tell me about you! I am excited to be part of this community and build each other up! Thanks so much for reading, K. Becker - Minneapolis, MN

What do you guys think of this video?

Lol @ "you guys got to stop worrying about calories, calorie counting does not work" ~ Okay Dr Duc... Not calorie counting was a contributing factor to leading most of us to bariatric surgery. Some of what he says makes sense... increased activity can increase appetite, I agree with that. But not doing weight training until you're on the lower end of the normal BMI spectrum, I don't agree with that. It might not ever happen. Because as Catwoman7 said, statistically not all bariatric patients reach goal. But everyone can benefit from resistance training when they reach maintenance. There's sooooo many opinions out there on how to lose weight and how to build muscle, it can be confusing. You can talk to different doctors, different personal trainers and get a different opinion from each one. Workout while fasting, no, eat before working out, blah blah blah, etc... I think Dr Duc's Covid videos are laughable, and so are some of his bariatric videos. 🤷‍♀️
  20. I'm Greek, and everyone in your extended family feels like they can comment on weight. If you are thin, they will criticize that as well, but generally not as much as being fat. At the same time, they are constantly push food on you, sometimes immediately after commenting on how you are fat. So yeah, lots of fun to navigate. It definitely makes you feel (or at least made me feel) like my worth was/is inversely proportional to my weight. You also are always navigating a mine field of how to deal with social situations (all based around food): if you eat too much, that's not good, but if you don't eat, what is wrong with you? Add to it all the fact that food is the coping mechanism for many, because they don't have healthier methods, and it's a powder keg. I'm definitely generalizing based on my experience but I think it is pretty accurate. And all the "helpful" comments about how "beautiful you are, if you could lose weight" or how "you are the prettier sister, if you would lose weight". Yeah, those started early and often and do a great job of vaporizing your self confidence (at least when it came to my physical appearance).

What do you guys think of this video?

according to statistics, only about 10-15% of bariatric patients make it to a normal BMI range, so that means only a small percentage of us would be doing weight (or other resistance) training, if we go by his advice. Resistance training is pretty important throughout life, especially as we age. So I'd have to say I don't agree with Dr. V there. I do agree that food intake is 90% of weight loss, though. Exercise can make a little difference, but not as much as most people think. It's basically good for overall health and building lean muscle, which is, of course, desirable.

    Tattoos

As an overweight individual, I always felt trapped. So my desire was to get a tattoo that celebrates my freedom from this chronic weighted cage. Theze are some of my ideas for a tattoo. Quite generic and many have had it, but it truly calls me out 😂 I am not a fan of tattoos but want to get something similar when I achieve my goal, but that decision will truly happen once I cross the bridge.
  23. Dr.V, another bariatric specialist on YT has many such videos and here he suggests working on getting "lean muscle mass" once you hit the goal and in the normal BMI range. Do you agree with his take? I know many here start their weight training quite early during their weight loss phase. So what's your opinion on his take? I would love to hear some input and opinions based on your personal experience. https://youtu.be/Sb63zPQxk0o
  24. I can't tell you or count how many times I was told I was fat since I was about 10 and weighed 90 pounds. In highschool I was 160 and so many people gave me the "you have such a pretty face if only you'd lose weight" line. I had friends tell me when I gained weight. When I became a nurse I had coworkers say stuff about my weight. When my son was a baby he was delayed and we thought he might have autism. When he was 5 we took him for an evaluation, and the doctor mentioned our weight (my husband is 6'10 and a big guy), and she went on an on about it which had NOTHING to do with why we were there. I've had doctors mention my weight for completely unrelated medical conditions. I had family members mention it. I could go on and on and on. Customers when I worked in retail before I was a nurse. And yes, men mentioned it too. But my husband, when we met, said I guess you weigh around 220. Just so blunt, lol. And NOT in a critical way. Just a matter of fact thing and he was the only person I ever admitted what I weight to, because I knew he didn't care what I weighed. And he doesn't care and never has. But my whole life, I thought none of my accomplishments mattered because I was fat. I did a lot of soul searching long before I had wls and eventually realized I was me no matter what the outside looked like and I liked who I was. I learned to accept myself, and I think that has made this process easier. I don't care what anyone thinks anymore. I wasted too much of my life letting others tell me I wasn't good enough because of my weight. And it is NOT OK to mention people's appearance whether it's weight or anything else. Many people are just jerks! Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. For me, I just know. I am just starting my journey and had my first nutrionist appt today! Needless to say, when they weighed me I was horrified at how much I gained in 2 years!! I was never heavy as a child or teen and mostly gained all my weight by the time I was 30. Then I lost big amounts over the years, but then gained it back tenfold. I just turned 49 a few months ago. I hate the way I look and feel and I have a 10.5 year old son I have to live for. This is it. I am determined!!! I am not scared anymore. I can do this and I am going to hopefully feel great and look fantastic!! Thankful I found this site tonight. I know it will help!!
