  1. I recently had a consult with my doctor. He told the the amount of weight he could help me lose. Is that number realistic even though its an estimate based on BMI or can you actually lose more? I "read" total amount lost is dependent on many variables.

Question about amount of weight loss

My surgeon is scary, he wanted to take down 100% of my excess weight (110 lbs) in 6 months!!! I guess I'm doing ok for the first month (I've lost 18.48 lbs - 3 weeks out) but now it's getting slower and slower, not sure if I can lose 10 lbs next month. :-(

    Dating

sadly, i've never really dated before. been overweight my whole life, and i guess i've never had the confidence to put myself out there before. i'm a bit nervous about that whole aspect of my life changing as i lose weight. frankly, i don't think the eating is what'll be on my mind once i'm dating.
  4. Hi there! I'm new to this site, but I am looking for some support and am excited to join the community!! I had my lapband surgury in October of 2009 with Dr. John Webber at DMC in Detroit...having no clue what I was getting myself into. I was young and healthy (besides, you know, the morbid obesity) so I went to a seminar, got an appointment with the surgeon, and it was scheduled for 2 weeks later. I lost 20lbs with the pre-op diet and another 25 after....and then I stalled out. I started to get back on the wagon at almost a year post-op, and that's when I found out I was pregnant! The surgeon emptied my band, I gained about 50lbs during my pregnancy and it's been pretty much an uphill climb since then. Throughout the years I have been on the yo-yo of "Back to it! Let's lose weight! Fill it up!" to "I can't eat anything healthy, everything gets stuck, I'm having pains, I'm sick of throwing up" and after lots of test, they empty it. Then a bit later I get motivated and try again...rinse and repeat. My band has been empty for almost 2 years now. I am officially 35 lbs heavier than when I went to that seminar years ago. Something needs to change. I have fought my lapband since day 1, which I am sad to say. I was 22 when I got the surgery and did not address any of the issues that got me to that surgery in the first place. I did what so many do and foolishly hoped that the lapband would magically fix my overeating and poor choices. Well, I hate to break it to any newbies out there, but it didn't!!! I still had the issues and poor choices, and just added an inflated tube inside of me. I know I'm sounding quite negative toward the band, that is not my intent. The lapband can definitely help drastically and has taught me SO much about myself and eating. You just need to be prepared to put the work in as well. So, after that novel, hi! I'm here! I am looking to support others so they don't make the mistakes I did, and to get support myself so I can start moving in the right direction again! I look forward to talking to you all!!

    Losing weight

My doctor requires a 10 liquid diet.. to shrink your liver but nothing about having to lose weight before the surgery -- i guess cuz if it were easy to lose weight before surgery you would already

    New Guy 55-80 overweight

You have to understand that this isnt a one shot surgery and I am "fixed" kind of thing. There are revisions, complications, appointments to adjust restriction.... point being its a lot of time, money and effort. A doctor is going to tell you that should plan on 50% of your excess weight loss with the band - so for you what is that like 35lbs? I am not sure its worth it for you. That said, and end to the yo-yo dieting might be. You also have to ask why your fat... Do you have portion control issues (I did) or do you eat all day long (I didn't). From what I have seen on here the band seems to work better for folks with portion issues. Also what do you eat? The band isn't going to help you make the right food choice - you will still have to do that on your own. I had never been the thin guy - but I am now thanks in part to my band. 296 with a bmi of 42 to 165 in a little over a year, but not without two additional surgeries. But still the best decision I ever made. Good luck

    New Guy 55-80 overweight

I understand about being at the end of your rope, I have struggled for 20-30 years of my life dieting & exercising as a fat person. I have managed to yo yo between sizes 12-16 & weighing between 180-210 - That is high for a woman, but I managed to wear it well. UP until after I turned 40 2 years ago, i have been steadily gaining more weight & my exercising has been all but nil. Anyway, I think if you don't feel like yourself at 235, you should get this. The lap band is a tool to help you with portion control & it is permanent, NO more yo-yoing will happen if you use this tool correctly, and have the restriction at the perfect spot. I considered the lap band for quite a few years, and am finally getting it on October 19th, I should have gotten it years ago, when I was at a little lower weight, then I wouldn't be struggling right now.
  8. Ok, I am the new guy here. Let me tell you a bit about myself before I hear what you all have to say. Pre College weight was 165, I was athletic and had energy. Post college weight was 225. Weight as of 6 months ago was 246. I am currently down to 235 after dieting and trying to exercise. I believe I am a 165 man trapped in a 230+ pound body. I have been dieting and working out for almost 15 years as an overweight person. I feel bad about myself, my cholestral is high and currently using meds to fix. I can't run or do much exercise because the extra weight has caused planter faciatis, horribly painfull to walk. I am wanting to get the lap band surgery. I know many of you will say that I don't weigh enough or that I could do it on my own without surgery. I couldn't agree more. i have been trying to for years and I am at the end of my rope. When I look in the mirror I don't see myself but rather myself blown up like a ballon and I am tired of it. I am looking for your opinion on my situation, whether you agree with me or not, I want to hear it. I need a reality check. I have a beutiful wife, who is in shape and works out every day, who thinks I am crazy for wanting to do this but she will support me if this is something I want. I have two great kids that I am out of breath from just trying to teach them to ride a bike. Sad. Tell me about yourselves and if you were less than 65 pounds overweight tell me more about yourself and your surgery. I appreciate your help and opinions.

    Comfort eating crisis!

My husband had to have open heart surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. I was VERY worried about how this would effect my weight. My triggers for eating have always been boredom and stress. I was going to have a lot of both. I started buying sugar free gum and breath mints. I made sure I had a couple bottles of water to drink in the car. The nervous eating was taken care of by the gum and mints. To my amazement, I actually lost weight over the week we were in the hospital. I made a point of getting a walk in everyday, but other than that did not get any other exercise. This is a very stressful time for you and your family. Take some time to take care of yourself.

Oh hunny I'm there too right now n was banded on Jan 2nd. I've been at 219-220 for 3 weeks now n have totally upped my exsersize. It's verry frustrating but I'm wondering if it has to do with loosing weight so fast at first. Idk if that's the case but my cloths does feel looser. We'll get there as long as we keep moving in the right direction, exsersizeing n eating the right foods.
  11. It's a statistic based on averages. The average person loses 60-70% of their EXCESS body weight. So if your healthy weight is 100 and you weigh 200 on average you will lose 60-70 lbs. That means there are people who lose more and people who lose less. As others have said, it's all about how you use the tool surgery gives you. I am a couple weeks away from being 8 month out and have lost 91% of my excess body weight (111lbs). Still losing relatively easily so I have no reason to think I won't make 100%. Only 15lbs to go!
  12. Congratulations -- what a great set of pictures. Beautiful in both but so healthy to have lost the weight. Very inspirational for those of us pre-band!

10 day Post Op appt w/Dr.

What a great appointment! I'm glad things are going well, and I think 12 lbs. lost is great! I know what you mean about wanting the weight gone now, though. I feel the same way. I'm sure everyone does.

How Are My Plication Friends Doing?

I'm doing great! No fill yet I'm down 17 lbs...changed my diet to low carbs and the weight is starting to drop off. My dr. Says to eat no more than 30g. I'm barely eating a cup of food. I find that I'm full after a meal for a long time. I'm not complaining though! Had homemade chilli for dinner -- it was yummy! Have a great night and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

    RNY 12/21/2017

My Story I had RNY 12/21/17 starting weight 230 and Surgery weight 218. Lowest weight was in May 2017 at 173. I bounced between 173-175. Since then I’ve creeped up to 180. I’ve gotten off track. I don’t eat much in a sitting bc of the restriction. But I find nothing I eat affects me negatively (no dumping etc) so I will eat bread items and sugar and I have gotten back into the habit of drinking coke again. Even if it’s just to have a couple of sips. I need to buckle down and get back on track. My goal weight is 140. Anyone else in the same space as me?

    May 18

I am 19 years old and I can bot wait to get started losing weight after surgery. However, I am a little worried about what will go on during surgery. My pre op appt is April 25 but some information from someone who has been there would be nice ?!?!
  18. Hi - Just found this group. I had uterus removed prior to sleeve surgery (ovaries intact). I am in mid 50's and did well with sleeve surgery, but lost focus and had about 40 lbs. re-gain. It definitely improved my blood pressure. I am struggling with losing the re-gain .... I am on doctor supervised liquid diet & not having the success that the other re-gainers in my support group are having. I'm chalking it up to PCOS metabolism. I see the dietician in a couple weeks & hope to get some additional help/advice.
  19. I really feel for you @GradyCat on this one. My fear is the same so I got rid of my scale. Now I only weigh in at Dr. appointments. I have at least one appointment every couple months until next year, so I know I will be weighed each time. I think spacing out measurements is going to help me with my obsession over this. It was definitely becoming a problem and now getting rid of the scale feels like a weight off my shoulders, no pun intended...

    P90X Anyone?

Anyone else doing P90X post-surgery? I am now in week 4 (had a VSG on June 17th so I started around 4 weeks post op) and liking the results. I did a few of the 90 days sessions 3 years go and had good results, but the weight came back on after i stopped. This time it's for good as well as building more muscle. Anyone want to join me?

I Think I Am Eating Too Much

Wow thats amazing I am almost 23 weeks out and I still can only eat 1/2C. I understand the size of the new stomach is different with each surgeon. The hunger feeling can be from gas some of the others have mentioned gas feels like hunger so I got gasX and it helped squash that feeling. You really have a great weight loss already hope you have continued success.

Question about amount of weight loss

You could lose more or less than predicted by your surgeon. There are many factors other than initial BMI, including but not limited to: age (younger=greater loss), sex (male=greater loss), eating habits (junk food & grazing=lower loss, high odds of regaining), regular exercise (more=greater loss, less regain), and lipo/plastics after loss (yes=less regain). Of course, the above is a just general guide and there will always be exceptions to these rules. We've all read about that person who gets away with grazing on junk food and that person who 'does everything right' but doesn't lose much. Total weight loss and maintenance depend largely, not exclusively, on habits and choices after surgery. Accurately calculating exactly how much weight you will lose is impossible.

    HELP, STALLED? CONFUSED!

I love tomato soup. I would make one small can with milk instead of Water almost daily. I would heat it up and pour it in a large coffee mug and sip it like coffee. I think that you are worrying too much about weight loss right now. I am not even exercising and I am averaging 10 lbs per month. I am retired so I can afford to do nothing all day long now, and a back problem prevents me from doing really good aerobics, so my weight loss is going to be slower than most, but I am happy with it so far. When you get to start eating real food again in a few more weeks, you will feel more satisfied and less hungry, I think. The sleeve will start working. Stick with the post-surgery meal plan. Relax and try to feel happy.

    Band to plication

I've not done well at all with GPS weight loss-wise (I just don't have much restriction), but if reflux is the main issue then it should help as this is a variant of the fundoplication which is specifically for reflux. I never had reflux post op (or pre op) and I haven't vomited once since surgery either. You check your surgeon WRT GPS and reflux as I don't know how far it varies from the fundoplication (I guess you end up with a smaller sleeve).
  25. It's been a few months since I posted; however, I remember reading the pregnancy threads with interest as a pre-op. Prior to my surgery, I had been infertile due to PCOS for many years, to the point of having less than 5 horrible, irregular periods each year. I had my sleeve done April 16, 2012, my weight on surgery day was 296 (down from 312 before preop dieting). By March 1St of this year, I had been holding steady at 180lbs since Christmas, with not much luck in losing more. I am 5`8 for reference. Around 220lbs, without medication, my periods returned with clocklike regularity - to the point of starting during the same two hour timeframe in the morning. Wow! In late March, I started losing weight without any other changes....and then found out I was pregnant. I knew within about a week of conception due to the onset of gutwrenching morning (read: all day) sickness, followed by crushing fatigue. This has been a total change from previous pregnancies at higher weights, which were much less symptomatic. As I had a major, life-threatening portal vein thrombosis after my sleeve surgery last year, requiring hospitalization on a Heparin drip, I called my hematologist with confirmation of pregnancy at 4 weeks. He placed me on Lovenox injections to be continued through my entire pregnancy and for a handful of months post delivery. Finding a OB who would take me on as a post Bariatric patient was a challenge. My normal OB chastised me, staying bariatric patients are incapable of carrying healthy pregnancies (which is patently false, by the way), and refused to care for me. After many interviews, including one with a midwife who told me I was fat and shouldn't gain more than 10lbs through my pregnancy, I found an intelligent OB who is attentive and knowledgeable regarding the unique needs of expecting post bariatric moms. I am currently 11 weeks, and pregnancy has not been kind to me. I have been on prescription antiemetics in order to stop vomiting, now IV Iron infusions due to anemia. I've lost a few lbs, now holding at 174. My injections had to be doubled due to already forming a clot in my leg. However, that being said....I yearly believe my sleeve gave me a chance for one last pregnancy. A chance I wouldn't have had otherwise.
