    Still In Stall!

I was sleeved on May 30th and have been in a stall for almost four weeks! I was taking it pretty well for the first 3 weeks but now I am frustrated and concerned and disgusted and angry. I am trying to be more patient and I know the weight will come off eventually. It is just a frustrating thing to see no movement in the scale for so long!

    Constipation!:(:(:(

They all take up to 72 hours to help. Miralax works pretty well for the immediate situation. After a really, really bad time during my first two weeks out, I started taking psyllium husk capsules twice a day (Fiber Therapy at Walmart). Haven't had a problem since. Work on getting your 64+ oz of fluids in every day. That's very important in controlling constipation too! All the products I researched seem to work by making your "stuff" absorb Water, making them softer and easier to pass. So the more water you drink, the better. Okay, I just grossed myself out so I'm signing off. Good luck!

    Anyone with RLS out there?

I quit my RLS meds the night before surgery. After surgery, thanks to the Oxy, I slept like a rock ! I didn't know sleep could be that peaceful! I'm only 3 weeks out (and off the Oxy for 2 1/2 weeks) ... Just starting to get the restlessness back now. I've been off all meds since surgery. I used Mirapex & Vistaril before. 4. Was thinking about non scale victories the other day while on my thinking chair...yup, the toilet and it dawned on me. My best NSV so far is fitting in a regular stall... No more having to use the handicap stalls for me. I can "think" like the regular folks in the tiny stalls that are everywhere. No longer do I have to wait just because someone else is in the big stall. It's the little pleasures like this that make me thankful for making the decision I did. Funny NSV..

@@bdejong, you're absolutely correct about that -- it's funny. Funny and swe-e-eet, Now you can roller skate around in the larger stalls. @@4MRB4PHOTO is ever observant with or without his periscope. Everyone, take note of who else is hanging around the public facilities before you go into the booth.

I totally know EXACTLY what your going through with your DD. My Mom herself said those same words to me not just once but three times befroe the surgery. I would say" I sure hope I can do this, Some folks can't & they have a rejection or gain there weight back." than she would say" well - thats no attitude to have if you have this you better succeed. Why go through the surgery & than fail at it?" I told her I didn't want to fail but that there was a chance. It still didn't sink in with her. She also said "If you can't get through the liquid stage -what makes you think you can get through the next stage?" I told her smiling" With your wonderful support!" You know your DD Loves you & is only wanting the best for you. He is probably only afraid that you may be upset if it doesn't go smoothly for you. Just tell him positive re-enforcement is all you need from this point on. I am sure he'll get the picture. If he doesn't than tell him you really don't wish to discuss the diet with him anymore & think it will be helpful if you talk about other things instead. Either way you are a success story because you are trying everyday to walk that road of improvement! Be proud of yourself & keep moving forward. One day everything will change from the inside out. By the way your plan sounds right on track-you'll do it & do it very well!!!

Margo I went through the same thing. When I saw my doctor before the surgery he was disappointed that I had only lost 5 pounds. Which I was very happy that I anything. I got it together and focused on one meal a day. I learned a lot about myself during that time. There is a lot more in life you have to deal with when you don't have food to fall back on. As I kept running into life's little struggles I would ask, am I really going to have this surgery. I don't think I shnould do it. Anyhow I did and I now I say periodically "What Have I Done". But I also say " I lost 6 pounds, I lost 1 pound, I lost 3 pounds, my clothes fit better, I can do this. Margo you can do it and no it is not always easy but what is. Get one thing out of your closet or drawer that fits tight right now. Try it on every 2 weeks and it will make the process just a little easier.

J.S. - thanks again for all your support, girlfriend!!! I will for sure see you on Wednesday! I am doing much, much, much better than I was this past week....I am losing, I am ready for my band, I am ready for my new beginning.....thanks to everyone for all your wonderful support and encouragement.
  9. I'm only 3 weeks out and by no way can even play like I eat like a normal person. I've been coming up with all kinds of excuses, but it's hard. At a dinner the other night, I sat and drank Water and just tried to be active in the conversation. I'm in NYC, a brunch city, so it's becoming frequent. Do you just move things around? I seriously feel my restriction when it's anything but water (I'm allowed softs, but it's not enjoyable). I come up with good alcohol excuses, but I know people are wondering what's up with the food.
  10. Hi I was banded december 19th but since then alot has been going on. I had a biopsy on my cervix in feb, and on monday May 11th I had to have an abdominal hysterectomy. i have only had 1 fill as they wanted me to maintain my weight for these procedures. I am currently at 173 lbs but as soon as this surgery is healed in six weeks I can finally have a fill. Im sore from this latest surgery but doing well. sure hope all other bandsters are doing well. take care and I will try to keep posting as I can. Julie

    3weeks out

Yep, very common. You’ve had pretty major life changing surgery, you’re healing & consuming very little. It’s not unusual to be feeling week & generally blah. Plus as you lose weight, the oestrogen which is stored in your fat is released into your blood stream throwing off your cycle & screwing up your emotions. It will get better just give it time. We all recover differently. Try adding some electrolytes to your water to give you a boost to your energy. Good luck.
  12. Can you survive a few weeks without all the social dining? Things will get much better, but at only three weeks...you are subjecting yourself to unnecessary (anxiety?). At three weeks, what exactly can you eat out there except maybe soup or very soft stuff (applesauce?) I can't remember. If you must be out/about, just say you're watching your portions and just order whatever, for it to come with everyone else's entree. And in the meantime, sit and talk more to keep your mouth busy, if need be. Just a thought.

One Day I Can Eat..the Next I Cant

I don't have the PBing issue but for about the past week, I have one day where I feel like I could eat anything and everything (b/c I am so hungry). Then a couple days later, I can barely get in 800-1000 calories. I have an appt next week.
  14. I had my one week post-op appointment today the doctor is pleased with my progress. I am down 8lb sense my surgery...came down to 320lb! I am now to start with my supplements and Vitamins but am supposed to stay on liquids for another week. I still have quite a bit of pain on my left side but that is normal I guess...there are some deep sutures that feel like they are pulling. If the pain does not get better in a few weeks they will open the site up under a local and re-suture....worst case. All in all things are going very well. On a side note we stopped at costco and found the Magic Bullet Blender kits on sale for $29.99. I have been looking at one for a while and at that price I couldn't pass it up.

    Swallowing Pills

I had no restrictions on pills at all and they had me taking them within a couple hours after surgery. I wasn’t allowed to take more than 1 at once and had to wait 15 min in between. Within a week I was able to take multiples at once without issues. Before surgery I did not have any issues with pills and could take 4-5 at a time. So it may vary individually. Each surgeon has their own programs and rules to follow and I’ve seen many differences on here with meds.

    gastric bypass more effective?

statistically speaking, you'll lose more with bypass than you will with sleeve, but it's only about a 5% difference. Plus an average is just an average - you'll find people who fall on either side of the average. There are people who are extremely successful with both surgeries - and people who fail with both surgeries. 14 lbs is a lot. You may lose that the first three or four months, depending on a whole host of other factors (sex, age, metabolic rate, activity level, starting BMI, etc), but weight loss slows down a lot after that. I started at well over 300 lbs. I lost 16 lbs the first month, maybe 12 or so lbs a month for a couple of months after that, then I think around 10 lbs a month until I was about 7 months out, and then 5-8 lbs a month until I got about a year out. After that, things really slowed down until it finally stopped at around 20 months out. P.S. With your starting BMI, your weight loss isn't going to be really speedy. You WILL lose it if you're committed to your program, but 14 lbs a month is overly optimistic for someone at your weight. Most of us start out much heavier.
  18. So I am two months out and I'm down about 40 pounds. That's great and all but I've been the same weight for about two and a half weeks now with like a 2-4 weight gain then loss again like once a week. I feel like I hit a plateau. Is only 40 pounds in two months normal????

    Disappointed

I had the sleeve in Sept 2014....I was a lower BMI'er when I started but I have lost hardly no weight, even gained 5 pounds....I'm hungry all the time and I have zero restriction(I know I need to have some willpower, but I don't have willpower and that was the main reason I wanted this tool to help me).....I take in plenty of Protein and I'm exercising.....Met with my Dr. two weeks ago....she said we'll give it six months and then talk about revision.......I have diabetes and that was my main reason for having the surgery in the first place.....I was scared to have the bypass.....I guess I should have sucked it up and went for it!

ohh wow paula, poor guy, cancer all over and they never detected it until now. he's so young. I bet mike is taking it hard, I'm not very religious, but I would like to think that every think happens for a reason, and I'm sure that this is no different. I hope mike gets to feeling better soon. ahhh..good ol' back to school shopping ..ahahahahahahahahahahahaha I'm laughing at you.....ok, I'm done That's what ya get for having kids!! I just teach them in school so none of those problems. You can laugh at me later when/if I have kids. :guess Ariel, thanks for the support. I'm feeling a bit better today because tomorrow.... I GET TO sleep IN! Saturday is the only day of the week I don't have to work in the morning, so I can sleep in late.....I sooooooooooo need it. I've decided that when i get back at the end of september the house is getting rearranged so I can bring the treadmill to the living room (AC and TV in there) and that I'm going to start putting myself first and get my ass in gear. I have decided I want to be at goal weight or with in 10lbs of it by July 2007 when I move back to the US. No more mini goals for me, I get disappointed when I don't make it. I'm just going for the whole enchilada!! Wish me luck and I'll keep every one posted...I promise not to over eat on taco bell, or Red Lobster, or Olive Garden..or...ohh God vacation is going to be hard.....

    7 months and a size....what

@@Kathy812 I have had most of my weight drop in the first few month's. It was dropping about 10-15 pounds and it has slowed down now. Exercise was a requirement at first for me. It changed into something that makes me feel good and I take my stress out at the gym. ( I no longer cope with stress by eating) Exercise before surgery was none. After surgery I walked 30 minuets on my treadmill about 3 day's a week. With the weight coming off I was able to up my walking to an hour about 5 days a week. At three months out my treadmill became boring. I sold it on craigslist and bought a gym membership. At four months I was at the gym for an hour doing cardio. I switch up my cardio so my body does not get the chance to hold on to the weight long. (elliptical machine, lateral machine and jogging on a treadmill) I pushed up the resistance as I got stronger. I also added weight lifting three days a week for a half hour. What a difference. I have found that not only do i exercise because I physically can. Now it is something I love. (who knew) I am working with my trainer at the gym. I still do an hour of cardio. I am also lifting for an hour 3 days a week. I completed a 10K now working up to a half marathon. I kayak and snow shoe. I love to stay active. Find activities you have fun doing. Also find what motivates you. If you enjoy music get a good play list while you work out. Plenty of fitness websites and app's to look into for Ideas. I hope you are surprised by what you're body is able to do. If you have time check back in. I would love to see how things progress for you.

    Protein Question

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. I remember in the hospital after surgery I could not drink the Water because it tasted very chlorinated. Eventually I found flavored water such as Crystal Light to work O.K. Many experience problems drinking Protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce Protein Shakes a day, in order to meet my protein requirements. You do not have to like protein shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Over time as your meal volume increases, if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op. The protein shakes that worked for me was Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme). I blended the powder with water using a Ninja single serve blender and added in a half a banana to add flavor. But really everyone is different. The operative word is experiment. Find something that works for you.
  23. I actually went in to see my band doctor on Friday and he took out most of the fluid in my band. I was getting progressively tighter over the past week and could hardly get anything down. I feel much better now, although, with this pregnancy the thought of food makes me sick. So I still seem to be having a hard time getting in many calories. Thanks for the advice. I am really glad that I had some fluid taken out.
  24. Last week someone posted a comment about their horrible experience with Dr. Nilesh Patel and the post appears to have been deleted. Does anyone have any experience with this doctor they can share? I would hope that the Dr.'s staff did not get this persons post deleted and if they did how many other negative post have been deleted.
  25. Hoping to have my sleeve surgery in September at Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington, Ma. with Dr. David Brams if all goes well with my pre-op testing. I am excited! 70 years old, retired RN and ready to be done with this weight and how it gets in my way. Had thought I would only consider the band, since it is reversible, I thought...but after lots of research I found myself thinking I wanted to do this only once, that is have surgery only once and read myself into believing the gastric sleeve was the best option for me. The nurse practitioner, who went over my particular family history, agreed and so here I am...waiting...but not so nervous as I was a week ago. I am excited to have it and move forward. mojaleski from NH
