Calling All August 28Th Sleevers
Red597 replied to Ready4success's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a horrible headache today too. I was drinking the Bariatric Advantage shakes until I realized that the taste and smell of all of the added Vitamins were giving me an instant headache. So I got some Total Lean RTD shakes from GNC and some Body Fortress whey from Wal-Mart and it was all good. I've done liquid diets in the past, so between 4 shakes and the Water, I'm not hungry. Plus I get one low-carb meal a day and can snack on cucumbers and sugar-free popsicles, so...so far so god for day 2. -
When to ask for surgery date
Frustr8 replied to Daisy's's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All of my prerequirements were done, some twice, quite a story behind THAT, had my presurgical July 17th, found out that day when it would be. Started on my liver-shrinking diet August 1st, met with a Internal medicine resident, who went over in great detail my previous surgeries, any reaction to anesthesia, went over my med list with a fine toothed comb, a lot of meds on there but truly boring type stuff. Gave me 2 bottles of a prep diet solution, one at midnight, other 2 hours prior to surgery.Made by Abbott Labs, the folks that make Ensure, also headquatered in Columbus, do I sleek a slight kickback there? Wanted to give me a nice big bottle of Hibiclens, get that nasty stuff Away from me, found out at previous surgery ( on my left knee) I am quite allergic, looked like somebody thrown acid on my poor leg. So I got special instructions , Dial Gold liquid soap, double shower, 2nd shower leave on 5 minutes and be sure to scrub your navel. Hnnnh? Turns out my surgeon Dr Needleman uses there as one of his portal sites, so I got 7 , one in the navel so it was made clear. At 6 months they have faded some much into the surrounding stretched marked territory they are not easy to find. Only one still clear is the one just below the sternum kinda between my breasts, that was where the liver retractor went in, and the liver shrink diet work, lost 15 pounds that month alone and he said my liver was small, sleek and smooth like a newborn calf, once I was certain he wasn't going to sell me for veal I felt pretty proud of ME.. Would I do it again? Oh no doubt, I have not had a textbook recovery but I'm more mad at my crabby old 73 year old body for mal- healing than I could the hospital, surgical procedure or my wonderful surgeon, in my ❤ he was and is a miracle worker. And to my dying day, and I don't plan to do that for years, I will be intensely grateful he took a chance on me when many programs would have turned me down on age alone. I fought seen and unseen hostilities for 3 long years to get Precious Pouch installed, although she is an ornery brat who rules my life, we will still make our final peace, the GERD freedom makes up for a lot of things, the blips, twists and turns in my bariatric journey . Basically we each write our own journal, in our lives, mine will be a cliff- hanger, you won't go to sleep if you read mine. 📝 -

Does your dr's bariatric program have a nutritionist that tells you exactly what you are supposed to be eating when? At my dr my nut tells me EVERYTHING, writes out sample diets, gives me lists, writes out a schedule, meets with me at all of the followup appts, everything. From what I am reading it sounds like some dr's don't have this?

I'm scheduled for the Gastric Sleeve on January 9th with Dr. Alejandro Gutierrez from Mexico Bariatric at Mi Doctor Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. I'm kinda nervous and excited at the same time. My husband and I fly in the 8th and fly out the 12th.

Updates from former Dr. Garcia & Dr. Illan patients?
rredrruby87 replied to Tiff's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am a patient of Dr. Illan also! Im 26yrs old 5'3 and started at 230lbs had surgery on Jan 17th 2014 and i now weigh 210lbs only 12 days later. It was an amazing experience! The doctors were so great and caring even the nurses. Also Omar goes out of his way to take care of you and your guest. I went with my dad who was nervous and against the surgery but once we got there we met two other patients we both felt more comfortable. After my urgery I never felt any pain (except for some gas pain) and I never took any pain meds. Soon as I was out of the hospital we were out shopping and touring TJ, thanks to Omar! I would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks Baja Bariatrics -
Just an observation: I've noticed that the proper serving size for almost all foods is actually the serving size bariatric patients are supposed to eat. Everybody just eats 3 times the serving size on the labels. Nearly everything is 1 cup or less or 4oz or less or 1 slice, etc. Makes life easy since you don't have to measure nonstop... just actually follow the recommended serving size for once. Once upon a time I used to laugh at how little they'd say a serving size was... but now it makes so much sense. lol. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

Amerihealth Nj - Does Anyone Know The Requirements?
Chele H replied to SandeeD's topic in Insurance & Financing
Is your insurance through your employer? Regardless of the insurance company, if your insurance is provided by your employer the coverage is totally dependent of which policy your employer chooses and if they choose a bariatric surgery exclusion. I urge you to contact your human resources department and/or the actual insurance company and get specific written guidelines. Good luck! -
Hello, I had the gastric band out in 2017. Because of a dilated esophagus. I hated that because I really did well with it. I wanted to get the sleeve but since my bmi was low the insurance would not approve it , that's what the bariatric coordinator told me . So i went on with life but now it is really hard to get weight off and keep it off i try every day, some times i have slip ups . I am gaining my weight back, so i went to my PCM and she put a referral in for me at the same place i had my lapband put in and removed. The coordinator seem like she really didn't want to help me . I was calling ever couple of days to see if she received the referral. I told her i only had 1 comorbidity hypertension. She said she would speak with the dr to see since he had done my other surgery. He had told me in 2017 to try to keep the weight off, but if i started to gain to come back and see him I can't even get in cause she says my bmi is only 34 and i only have i comorbiditie. I have a sleep study on the 24 July to see if I have an apnea. My PCM is really trying to help me. May sound crazy but I hope I do so I can qualify I am on vacation now and I know I have gained even though I was not trying to but I knew I would. It is so hard. Any one else out there In a similar situation? Sorry for the rambling 😊

I did compare the nutritional facts on this to bariatric infusion. Which is what my surgeon recommended and it was about the exact same so I think it's safe?!

@ i had my surgery done by Dr Foote in Grand Haven on the lake shore of lake michigan. He actually practices out of grand rapids but comes to GH. He is a leading Dr in the sleeves surgery and has done some ground breaking surgery with the sleeve. Hes an awesome doctor with an absolutely awesome supoort staff to back him up. I feel i made tue best decisiom by going to him. I live in muskegon but chose dr foote over the resident bariatric surgeon in muskegon. Best choice i have ever made. I can call tue office or email any of the staff and actually have cell numbers of tye staff to call them day or nite with pressing questions. They also have an awesome bariatric group that meets twice a month.

Try adding some fruit or healthier carbs and see how you feel...and how your weight loss is. I also read an article that said that drinking low-fat chocolate milk after a weight training workout led to more muscle gains than by drinking sport drinks. Very few physicians have any training in nutrition. They do what the other guy does. I venture to say that those who propose a low-carb diet have no idea if it works better than higher or moderate carb diets for weight loss in bariatric patients--why? There are no studies showing which diet is best for bariatric patients. Read this article, it's very enlightening FINDINGS; Diet and Fat: A Severe Case Of Mistaken Consensus - New York Times

Really Need Some Support...and Affirmation
merrywait posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Last week I went to get my surgery date set. My surgeon's P.A. is the one I spoke to. She did EVERYTHING she could to try and get me to switch form the band to a G.B. I do not have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other co-morbidities. I have a BMI of 42. BTW, my surgeon is Blue Cross Bariatric Surgeon of Distinction She went on and on about what a hassle the band was and what would happen if I was on vacation and it got too tight or too lose. She said no one would touch it. She said we had better never move cause other surgeons won't do fills on patients that are not theirs. She mad it sound like I would never be able to travel again and that the band would become nothing but a hassle and a curse to me! Then she launched into the problems. She said 80% of all Lap Bands have problems. They get so tight they can't swallow their own spit, band erosion, reflux, esophagus dilation, having to get fills or unfills every few weeks, not losing any weight. Yet when i asked how many bands they had have to remove she said only one since they began doing them. Finally, she wrapped it up with the fact that, if I was lucky, I might lose 40 pounds of the 100 i need to lose. She said the only way for the band to work was to follow the diet without one goof-up and to exercise like a Trojan Warrior!!!! Why, why, why??? Please tell me it ain't so!!!!! -

Good info. But to clarify, I didn't say it was true - I said that other people use it that way. I do not think this will cause weight gain as part of a normal bariatric diet. -
I'm going to KC bariatric which is through Shawnee mission Med. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Awww!!! Need help choosing a lapband dr in mexico
54Shirley replied to alowe81's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To the person in CANADA: With the Health Care that you have ! Come to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit ! * They have excellent surgeons there, and they are a center of excellence. They will be able to take care of all your aftercare. Canadians flock by bus to see the bariatric surgeons. So trust me when I tell you, you would not be alone. Sometimes I think there are more people there from CANADA then the States. Your Ins. is gold. I don't know why anyone would consider Mexico for the band... It's your business totally. I just hope you know that if anything will go wrong, and it will "it's plastic!" that you have to go back to the surgeon who did your work. Because know one else wants to touch someone else's mistake. It's very hard to get another surgeon. I KNOW ! All I did was move away from my area and I can't get anyone to touch this "it has a leak" If not I have to go back to who did my surgery, or have it removed. I am waiting, and hoping that they call me and set this up. They say they haven't forgot me, we will see. I would suggest someone that will monitor your fills Not a fill station that's who put a whole in my Port. I will have him replace it with a newer band I guess. We will see. I will post if someone else takes me in for repair. In the meantime I hope you consider someone in your state. Good Luck Shirley. Dr. Jeffrey Genaw Henry Ford Hospital "Center of Excellence" Detroit, Michigan. -
Hi there. Does anyone know which Dept of Veterans Affairs hospitals do the sleeve? The system is divided by regions, and the VA does not put out a lot of info about the bariatric programs. I have Tricare Prime too, but they do not cover the sleeve. BUMMER... I am a service-disabled vet too and am able to use all services at VA hospitals too. Thanks for any info you can provide. Shan

Bariatric vitamins are loaded with lots of nutrients, so you do need to coat your stomach prior to taking them. I personally can’t stomach mine whether I have food or not. I tried to take my multivitamin with iron and I threw it back up. I actually can’t stomach food or water currently so hopefully this will pass. I hope things have gotten easier for you.

All good responses above. I had the same reaction after visiting some bariatric forums. It’s normal to worry and stress over surgery procedures. There are risks with ANY type of surgery. Talk to your surgeon about the statistics for complications. Know that your team will take good care of you. Your pain will be managed with medication. I’m five years out. No complications.

I was in a similar situation with 12 years of no insurance. I spoke with the Bariatric coordinator and luckily with my surgeon/ insurance it wasn't an issue. (Horizon NJHealth)

I am having gastric bypass on March 4. I have several medications that I take that have nothing to do with weight loss surgery, and I will add the bariatric vitamins after surgery. I've been told that I will need to crush the pills for a while, and I wanted to hear how people dealt with that. Do you put them in a protein drink, in water, or something else?

Mostly it depends on what you are going to eat. There are a ton of bariatric cookbooks out there. But I did find this link: http://obesitycoverage.com/before-after/top-7-apps-after-weight-loss-surgery/

I just got an Omron on amazon that was $34 plus shipping. This was based upon the recommendation of Dr. Wolkodoff, (www.energyzone.org), after I did a VO2 profile recently. He said as long as it is basic, I could follow along with my zones on all the machines from the result of my VO2 Max test. I have not had the time to post about the VO2 max test, but was really insightful to determine how I should train aerobically. As a result, I am now doing two interval days and two aerobic days as my Anaerobic Threshold was low, and Dr. Wolkodoff said elevating this will allow me to burn more calories in my cardiozone. I did the test of a recumbent elliptical, as my hips won't fit on a regular bike yet. Apparently he did a study about Bariatric patients and VO2 and found the recumbent elliptical was a very good way to test these things as most of us don't fit well on a regular bike. If you are close to Denver, and want to improve your aerobic training and take the guesswork out of it, I highly suggest this test.
