  3. Twiddling thumbs here and I'm starting to get impatient. I start month 3 of the 6 month WAIT tomorrow with my PCP. Anyone else starting month 3 in January (started diet in Nov.)? Let's party now that we're almost half-way there! Here's to May or June at the latest!

    Soft solid introduction

Try to take atleast 3 to 5 minutes between bites. And chew it to as liquid a constancy as you can. To the point you can suck it through a straw. Try to only incorporate one soft solid at a time. Like have mostly pureed and one soft solid meal. It's a slow process for sure and it is very uncomfortable in the beginning. Even water hurt like hell but it gets better. Are they spasms that happen like right under your chest bone around the upper/ middle of your torso? If so thats what i had. You're still really swollen and tight right now. I find drinking a hot cup of tea helps relax things so they aren't so tight. Its still rough 13 months out but WAY better than the first couple months. Still call your surgeon just to be sure it isn't a stricture, but if the food is staying down without nausea i wouldn't worry TOO much (not a doctor just speaking from my own experience). How long does the cramping last? Is it soon after a bite, lasts a few seconds and then passes? If so that sounds like what i go through. I take REALLY small bites, breaks in between of atleast 2 to 3 minutes depending on how far in the meal i am. I take longer pauses between bites if im more than halfway done so i can better judge when I'm satisfied/ full. Just take your time. You may have to go back to mostly puree for a bit to give your tummy more time to adjust. I didn't start soft foods till a month out and could barely get halfway through a soft scrambled egg. Egg drop soup was my friend. Stay strong and keep your surgical team in the loop. They may be able to adjust things to better suit your needs. Sent from my SM-G925T using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I am meeting with my surgeon oct 5 and am nervous and frustrated with the long process of approval is anyone going thru the same thing. Also I went to a support group and was the youngest one there I felt weird
  6. I think it is a mistake to set goals based on things you have seen others do , or things you hope for. You will find out what your particular body will do with this brand new tummy of yours. Meanwhile, 20 pounds in three weeks is amazing! Around this time in the process you may have your first slowdown as your body processes what has happened and gets into the losing chemistry rhythm . It is important to get the Protein in or your body will burn muscle instead of your fat cells. You may fall into the misconception that you should use this opportunity to just starve yourself without working to get your protein, your Water, etc. I think that would be a mistake. My research and the stories here have told me the things you can do to maximize your results 60-80 grams protein- EVERY day. In the absence of carbs, with lots of protein, the body turns to fat cells to burn- that is what we want! Hence the protein. 64 ounce plus water it is important to flush out the waste from all that burning < or = 30-40 grams carbs per day This makes your body turn to the fat cells Not everyone counts carbs but many people have great results in doing so. at least 30 minutes exercise per day Vitamins supplements So that is my advice to you- follow the rules, you will lose to your maximum. Don't compare yourself to anyone else- you are YOU! Good luck on this wonderful journey!

    Feeling discouraged...

"although I've had several dreams where I was thin as a pencil lol". WOW, I just had one of those dreams last night and I swear I was running around naked as a jay bird through the whole dream!! I guess I am so impatient because I just feel so gross, my whole body hurts, my clothes are too tight, it's getting warm out and the heat bugs me....I want a date so I can have my "last supper" and start this two week liquid phrase.... I am just so uncomfortable I can hardly stand it..... I want to thank everyone for the support....I truly need it right now. Margo

    Feeling discouraged...

Most of us get very impatient during those difficult weeks between the time we finally decide to have surgery and the day we actually get banded. What you're going through is normal. Hang in there and keep filling out the effing forms. You're getting a band!
  9. How long did u guys wait before going back to the course. Tuesday ill be starting my 6th week post opp
  10. I was laying in bed today, (it's my day off) I was reading some posts and came across one that motivated me enough to get me out of bed at 7 and go do a 40 min workout. I was going to do the workout anyways but I was putting it off until later. Today is my double workout day...God help me. I've decided that I need to change things up for myself. I have already gotten in my 3 days of workouts that I require myself to do and still have 3 days left. I do believe I'll get in 5 days atleast this week. It's been a long time since I've done 5 days straight. I love to workout, I just let my life get in the way. Well not anymore. I know that if I want to reach my goal weight by my 41st birthday in July I need to get moving. My body is screaming at me for using muscles I haven't used in years, but I don't care. If I can move I'm moving this body. No amount of arthritis is stopping me now. Nor is my weight for that matter. This is my year. I normally don't think about myself so much as I do everyone else, but when I turned 40 I decided all that was gonna change. Let's talk about me!

    Fake Ice Cream

Here's another that's good for those who can have whole fruits. All it takes is a food processor, but an ice cream maker would be great to give it a better consistency. 2-3 large, very ripe/black bananas Good-quality cocoa to-taste 1 teaspoon vanilla Sweetener to-taste (optional) Leave the bananas until they're very black but not rotten, to ensure that they're as sweet as possible. Peel and freeze them. Add the frozen bananas to the food processor 1/2 at a time, blending until they're completely creamed. Add the vanilla and 1-1/2 tablespoons cocoa, blending until thoroughly mixed. Taste, then add more cocoa and/or sweetener as needed. It should have a consistency similar to soft-serve ice cream. If you add it to an ice cream maker and process per the machine's instructions, it should become airier and creamier as it's processed. Either way, it's an excellent dessert that's full of Vitamins and you don't have to tell anyone how good for you it is!

  13. I met with the nutritionist 1 week prior to surgery and she laid out my pre-op diet really well. She provided suggestions on what to eat and what not to eat and why certain things like soda are bad for me. She talked about what it will be like post op to eat with the band and stressed certain points such as chewing really well and not drinking with meals. She introduced me to several forms of high Protein shakes, which was wonderful, because all I thought was really out there was Slim Fast! I was really in the dark about Protein Shakes Good luck!

    question

I am 3.5 weeks out and it has gotten easier just this week to eat a little more. But before that I could only eat 2 oz. And it also depends on what it is. Yesterday I ate tuna salad and could not eat much, but couple hours later was able to finish the scoop. Same with yogurt. But if it is something warm and not too thick I can eat more. Temperature seems to be a factor for me. Also if I try a baked potato nothing works b/c it is just too thick and seems to stick to my chest. I often wonder where IS the stomach/sleeve b/c when I have problems it is always in my chest not what I thought was my stomach. But eating less, but more frequently is definitely a key. It took my hard head a while to learn that.
  15. Thanks Everyone! I am extremely backed up. I haven't gone in over a week and I took the stool softener (colace) last week. Im popping gas x but it's not really working. I just sat on the toilet and I felt something trying to come out but it won't. Ugh!! I can't sit on the toilet all day. So I think I may have no choice but to try the fiber option someone suggested. I hope it gets better. I didn't know you shouldn't go more than two days without a BM! I'll keep that in mind. Thanks again!

    Sleeve too big?

Denser protein rich foods will trigger your restriction. Refried beans are more of a slider, and so you can eat more. I can eat about 5-6 ounces of refried beans, but really feel the restriction with 3 1/2 ounces of meat. You are fine. Just continue with your doctor's program.
  17. Hello! Just wanting to see about starting a forum on tips of getting through the pre-op diet. I am on Day 3 of the Liquids and so far so good...I have had one instance so far that I really didn't think I could do it...I keep looking at the final picture. What is or has helped you get through the 2 week liquid diet or whatever diet that was preferred by doctor?
  18. Thank you for your response. I know that as far as exercise I’m getting enough of that in. I go to the gym at least 4-5 times a week. My workouts vary from cardio for about 45 minutes to strength training in a structured class to a high intensity spin class. From what you’ve posted I think my problem is my water intake. I’m having a bit of a problem getting enough water. My surgeon told me that I had to wait 90 minutes after eating to drink and 30 minutes after drinking to eat. So I know that my water intake is not even close to what I need. As you mentioned, I need to cut my food intake in half which would help me get in more water since I wouldn’t be waiting the 90 minutes to drink. My calories are usually around the 800 -1000 and may go a bit higher when I eat out. Carbs I need to work on. You are absolutely right in that. I try to keep them low but I’m afraid after I hit my six month post op I did slack on tracking my food so I believe they may be the culprit along with not enough water. Can I ask you to please give me an example of your daily meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Can you also tell me your starting weight and current weight and surgery date because you mentioned that you too were low BMI I’m interested in just how badly I’ve done with my surgery in comparison to others of similar BMI. Thanks again.

    Soda Pop

Im 15 weeks post op and had my first sip of soft drink/soda the other day. I didn't die. I could feel the bubbles in my stomach so it was a weird sensation but not uncomfortable or anything like that. Think I had 3 sips over a couple of hours and that was enough as its too sweet now after not drinking it for 4 months. Each to their own, I say. Everyone is different!
  20. Congratulations ! Sounds like you have had a wonderful few weeks

    Such a long wait!

I hear ya!!!! My 6 months started on 3/8, and waiting is not fun. I figured it would go by fast, but wow time is dragginngggggg! I should have waited until now to quit the Diet Coke- which to me has been the hardest part!! It seems like all I do is go to the doctor. When I have my surgery, I am also having my ovaries removed and a bladder sling thing done. One surgery, versus three. I was already hitting my out of pocket max this year, so I figured i might as well. Luckily the docs are all good with it- but getting all the prep appts for all three surgeries is CRAZY. I have never been to the doctor more in my life lol! Happy Waiting.
  22. I had carpel tunnel for the last 15 years. I had decided to get the surgery and got the date for next month. But, I have noticed this last week. I have not had any symptoms. I haven't talked to the doctor yet but I don't think I'm doing the surgery. I was sleeved May 23rd and have lost 50 lbs. so far.
  23. I am almost 4 weeks post op and I haven't lost anything since 8 August. The scale has fluctuated between 202 and 204 since 8 August. It is very frustrating and discouraging to say the least. I started at 216, so to only lose 12 pound the first month is certainly not what I expected......I am feeling very down with this....

    Please help me!!

Hi Noosh, I did have my surgery on 12-29-08. It went well, and although the incision where the port is was a little more painful that I expected, it hasn't been bad at all. I've lost about 15 pounds (not surprising, since there's not a whole lot that i can eat!), so I've got about 60 more to go. The first week was a little rough, between some pain (though not bad) and wanting to eat. Since then, it's been easier. I will be getting my first fill on 2-11, and I am looking forward to being able to eat real food again soon. As far as the process went with Aetna, it was really painless! The insurance guru at my surgeon's office did basically everything, and the fact that I had been seeing my primary care physician for about 6 months (and had 3 consecutive monthly visits...make sure you get those done) and had tried other way to lose (Meridia, Pfen-Fen, Weight Watchers, etc.) really helped. My out of pocket expenses were about $2000, including my co-pay and the classes that I took through the Bariatric Program that works with my surgeon. I've submitted the fees for the program to Aetna to see if I can get reimbursed, so we'll see how that goes! Good luck to you, and if I can do anything to help, please let me know!
