Hardly Any Restriction = No Motivation

I have been there-very recently. I went through the same thing last week. I was banded shortly after you, on 12/31/10. I did great-up until last week. I had a lot of stress going on, and began coping with it as I always had-eating. I had no restriction, and was eating a lot at night. I didnt' have any willpower to stop, and kept eating even though I wasnt hungry. Granted, it wasnt the sheer volume of food I used to eat, but still it was constant grazing, which makes it difficult to get back to healthy eating habits. what i did to break the cycle was to get myself back to the gym FAST. I started going back to the gym after work, on my way home, so there wouldnt be excuses. having something to do kept me from coming home and snacking prior to dinner. This week, I have been back in the gym, coming home and preparing dinner and then after dinner, putting gum in my mouth and 'closing" the kitchen. Lights off, no reason to be in there. with these little tricks, I am back on track and ready to go again. I am not sure if this advice will help you, but I was really crying out for help last week. I understand the difficulty that you are having, and just remember, you had great willpower when you were on the pre op diet. You were working for either avoiding the open surgery(shrinking the liver with the pre op diet), or were just very motivated as the change in your life was just around the corner. Find something that drives you as it did then-whether it be exercise, a new pair of jeans, or take up a hobby that keeps you busy in the evening. Idle hands feed the mouth, it seems lol. I hope this helps, and hopefully at your appointment tomorrow they can give you either some tips or some idea on what is going on restriction wise, Keep us posted and good luck.

    Gall Bladder Gone Bad

My Gallbladder flared up for maybe 10 years before I finally had it taken out. At the end I was throwing up every night for a month. It was my own fault though. I was petrified of going to the Dr and getting surgery. By the time I finally went to the emergency room, I had a high fever, my gallbladder was gangrene and had perforated and had gone septic. I was admitted and had it removed as an emergency surgery. I was hospitalized for several days for what should have been a one day affair. The Surgeon said it was "one of the grossest things he's ever seen" ... Now since he's a doctor I imagine he's seen a lot of gross things but I didn't ask him to elaborate. I understand that many doctors are conservative and do not operate until they are certain that recurrences of the attacks are inevitable. Sometimes dissolution of the stones works and sometimes patients never have a recurrence... but where you've already had two attacks so close together, hopefully they'll just take care of it expediently. Good luck!

do u have a sudden urge....

A make over can involve color or highlights, new cosmetics, new clothes to go with your new attitude. If you have long hair and it looks good and you don't want to cut it short, who says you have to? the over 50 thing is silly to me. Who made up that rule? Lots of cookie cutter women with the "graduated wedge/bob thing". At any given event at my son's school at least 10 women have some version of that haircut. I should know I had it at one time too. Looked nice, but what a pain in the tush to keep up with. Just because it is popular, doesn't mean it works for everyone or is everyone's taste. Live and let live, I say. I think short hair can be sexy and that touseled long bedroom hair is to die for. Halle Berry looks better with short hair and Christie Brinkley and Jane Seymour (over 50) both look amazing with their longer hair. I'm certainly not a movie star, but my hubby loves my hair longer. I'm in my late 40's and it is to my middle back. I have been blessed with thick, wavy hair and why should I cut it because someone said as I am getting closer to a certain age I should? Guess what is the best about your thread? We're all losing wt and feeling good and want to shed the old fatter image. I say go for it! New haircut, just a trim, new color, new clothes...any and all can make us feel terrific and in the end, isn't that what we should want not only for ourselves but for other woman as well? Strut your shorter perky do, flip your long hair, enjoy your classic bob.......and enjoy every second of this experience. I wish all of us a successful journey !
  10. I am curious to see who watched a video of an actual VSG before you had the procedure? I am a nursing student & have had one surgery prior to this when I had my gallbladder out 10 years ago. I wasn't afraid of surgery & the procedure went fine. Since then, I have been in the OR a few times in nursing school & have seen open heart surgery while I was 2 ft from the patient's open chest. Now that I am (hopefully) getting the VSG, I found myself feeling nervous about the procedure in a way I had not before. I went back and forth with the idea of watching a video of the procedure to take the mystery away. We fear the unknown & all that I finally decided to watch one last night & I am SO GLAD that I did. I already feel better! AM I NUTS!? The consensus among my friends was to NOT watch it. They all thought it would be scarier. What do you guys think??

    Very disappointed!

I'm 19 and I'm having surgery on the 7th of July. And I am definitely not lazy. I've played sports my whole life and have danced. Having this surgery is the only way i am going to lose the weight I need to in order to live a healthy life. This decision was in no way easy. The only people that know are my parents and my sister and brother.. I don't know how my other family members would react but at the same time it's my life so who cares if they think negatively about it.. Good luck everyone!

    Need help, quick!

I lost 13lbs in 10 days following the liquid plan. Your surgeon is likely comfortable with this but the question is are you? I would call them and ask your question directly just to give you peace of mind. Honestly, many surgeons require the liquid diet for a much shorter period of time than mine. Then again, I met my plastic surgeon on Monday and had my Brachioplasty on Thursday. Had I had the chance to have my bypass long before I did I would have jumped at the chance. That's just me but I have had a lot of surgeries in my life so I was comfortable with it which is what matters. Are you comfortable? If not, take the original date.

I lost 10. That is just so your liver can shrink. It's easier for him to move around and get to the stomach. Just make sure you don't gain Sent from my SM-G550T1 using the BariatricPal App
  14. Wowo I can't believe the surgery is over. Was a little dizzy and nauseas, but other than that, not bad. I went in at around 1:00 PM, was scheduled for 11:30 AM. Was getting nervous the longer it took. My husband siad I was in for about 2:00 hours, that was sedating me and waking up. Not bad. The couldn't find my hiatal hernia, so I didn't have to have that repaired. Good I guess. Stayed overnight in hospital. Came home on Thursday night around 6:00 PM. Just have a little tenderness in rib area. He made 6 incisions. I have picts, but still embarrased to show them. Will eventually, when I have some progress. I am losing about 1 pound a day. Have to stop weighing myself though, because one day I lose the other I gain. I have a lot of swelling in my belly. But is going down a bit. I can lay on my side and get up and down OK which I am happy about. Showers are a little funny, because of the hot water making me dizzy. Should put it cooler, so that's my fault. I am very hungry. Has anyone else been hungry. It's almost like I miss the chewing part. My stomach is always making funny gurgling noises. I feel like a baby, every time I eat soup broth or a protein drink, I move my bowels like a newborns. Very waterry and gasey. I had my LapBand put on at Brigham and Womens in Boston, MA by Dr. Robinson. Anyone else go there or have him? Love to hear if my progress is normal. Can't wait until mussies. I am sooo hungry.

I too live in FL and have been picking up things on clearance in smaller sizes. And living in FL yourself you know how the stores follow with seasonal clothes but you and I know that the stuff they sell for summer (even some spring) we can wear 10-11 months out of the year. So when they go on clearance, like now, we are set. I have a spare bedroom closet that I am using for my new sizes. And I have been trying to come up with a cute name for that closet but am stumped so if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them! But there are some great deals out there right now. Since most of the time I usually have to try things on before purchasing I have just picked up a few safe pieces I know will fit. You should do it! At the very least you could find cute workout wear! What part of FL are you in??

    Nicotine Testing

Mine did bloodwork.. I googled to see how long it takes to get nicotine out it only takes 3 to 4 days. But there is another chimical in cigarettes that takes 10 -15 days to get out of your system. Drink lots of Water to flush your system Sent from my LG-H343 using the BariatricPal App
  20. cleos mom, your post makes me really appreciate my surgeon. you have a low bmi; it's not likely your weight will clip off fast..10-15lbs in 3wks, PLEASE pm me if you can do this. the most i ever lost in a 1 month period was 8 & that was the first month of banding. it's just not realistic or likely in many cases. you may also require MANY fills for restriction - i needed 8.5ccs in my 10cc band before i "got it"..... you already had your surgery done by him - does the hospital you went to afford you another dr to work with? nutritionist? nurse? only 23 bands under his belt - that's pretty green to be lecturing with such a small sampling of patients. hope your GI turns out OK!
  21. I was banded on 9/22 and had my first and only fill on 11/11. Today I went for my second fill and when the surgeon came in (I haven't lost any weight since the 2 weeks post op) he started lecturing me on "the band is only a tool, etc.." and I told him that when the amount of food that I need to eat to lose weight both satisfies me and controls my hunger - then I'll lose weight. Here are the reasons I don't think he gets it..then tell me what you think. 1) He is a general surgeon who has only done 23 bandings. 2) In the hospital when I complained about left shoulder pain after surgery, he said it is usually in the right (I have researched this - it is almost always the left) 3) At my 3 week post-op visit he said he wanted me to lose 10-15 pounds by the next visit (in 3 weeks) with no fill. 4) He doesn't seem to take into account that I have lost 60 pounds in almost 4 years - and none of it due to the band. (pre and post op diets) 5) I have something underneath the port incision that looks like a cold sore. He didn't know what it was but couldn't prescribe anything because he said he's "just a surgeon he doesn't know what to prescribe - I would have to go to my PCP." 6) I didn't get a fill today because I told him of my chronic shoulder pain so he wants me to get an upper GI to see if the band is okay. This I agree with. 7) He seemed surprised that I have the same capacity for food as I did pre-band (I have 2cc's in a 10cc band). I am 187 now and almost didn't qualify for the banding because my pre-op BMI went below 35. I don't know what to think. I want to have confidence in him and he did a good job surgically. But I have doubts.

    Too early to start?

Hi, I did mostly liquids for a two week pre-op diet (64 oz water and two protein drinks a day plus a palm size dinner, half protein, half veggies). Had no problem moving to full liquid stage, but only had to be on it 10 days. I personally didn't have a problem staying on it at all. Everyone differs. Mushies is what killed me. I'd say you don't need to go on liquids this early. Do you have a one or two week pre-op diet? That should be enough to prepare you. I agree with GreginMI. What I did was make sure I stayed off refined carbs, rice, potatoes, caffeine and carbonated water before the pre-op. That made the transition to pre-op and after surgery a lot easier as I already was weaned from them and didn't miss them. Good luck!

    Clothes Shopping

I bought this really cute dress in a size 10 last week. Been eyeing it since it came to that store but a). Didn't feel the desire to spend $120 on it and . Didn't want to buy my current size (18-20..I'm pre op) if I wasn't going to stay this size longer. Well summer is almost over and they put this dress on clearance for$20!! They only has size 18 and size 10 left..so I scooped up the 10 I have been buying more clothes in mediums and large instead of 2xl. Also gives me motivation to fit it them :-)
  24. Good luck everybody , I feel alot better listening to all of the encouragement! !! We got this....my name is neenee and I am being sleeved on 10/16/2012. Thanks... And keep up the good work, I'm glad everything went well...on your way to a better you.
  25. I eat so liitle food also and would not be able to make over 60 a day...I love the shakes and have enjoyed drinking them for almost 10 years, first as a bandster now as a sleever...I eat abt 3-4 bites and Im full so i cant get the full serving of protein...i guess if you are able to get your numbers in food then good for you unfortunately i cant
