    4 years & nauseous

    I'm three years out and still get nauseous occasionally, but I can trace it directly to overeating or eating the wrong foods. I'm definitely not nauseous all the time. I second the suggestion that you go to a bariatric surgeon, since your original doctor was not one. "Get your information from the internet" does not seem like sound medical advice to me.

    Exercise - Who even am I???

    I have been on an exercise streak the past 6 weeks. My routine is off the week because of guests and I am so antsy to get a work out in. I have no good advice, but just validating your experience because I am going through the same thing. I do get a bit hungrier with exercise, but not too terribly.

    I'm sad VERY SAD!

    As someone who is 3-ish weeks out from surgery, I completely understand how you feel. I don’t have much of a desire to eat anything or drink anything, because everything gives me heartburn or indigestion. I’m really tired and I miss going out to drink with my friends. The only things I can keep down are soup and ice pops. Even water makes be feel a little ick sometimes. I used to be able to drink 64 oz. of water in like a half hour, and now I can barely get down 1/4 of that amount without feeling gross. I’m going to be patient with myself and say that this takes time. But 4-6 months feels so far away. And when food is a basic thing you need to function, and something you relied heavily on, every day feels like it’s going at a snails pace. I mean all of this to say that you aren’t alone in this. I know exactly how you feel.

    I completely understand the part about enjoying meals with your husband. One of the ways my spouse showed love was through cooking elaborate, delicious meals (which is a big part of the reason I got so big in the first place). I thought that would be taken away from us and would be a source of friction, but three years later we can enjoy a lovely meal together--but my portions are much smaller now! I will be honest--I had major regrets about having the surgery for the first four to six weeks. I know you said you don't want to hear it, but three years later I'm thrilled I did it, and my only regret is not having done it sooner.

    Exercise - Who even am I???

    I'm 9 months out and I haven't felt like I've had more energy than before surgery until this week. I feel restless if I don't get enough exercise, and I want to work out twice a day. I'm trying to be careful and vary the exercise from day to day so I don't get injured, and I still have a tendency to inertia, but it's definitely a huge change. I notice since I'm losing weight my Apple Watch tells me I'm burning fewer calories for the same amount of exercise 😪 I know that's to be expected, but it's getting harder and harder to get to 500 calories burned in a day. Do you get hungry from exercise? I only find I am hungrier after swimming.

    Upper Endoscopy

    Good Morning, I just did my EGD a few weeks ago. I too was nervous, but the hospital staff (nurses, doctors, etc.) were very nice, calming, and reassuring. The procedure only lasts like 15-20 minutes. When you wake up, you'll probably feel like you just took one of the best naps of your life. I know I did! Just be calm (I know, easier said than done) and it'll be over before you know it! Just breathe and think that you're one step closer to your surgery.

    Loose skin vs. abdominal fat

    Yes, they do. I scheduled one for next week. I just looked at my last results from Feb 2022, and I've only lost about 20 lbs since then so it might not be too different. I am feeling a bit too obsessed with my weight/stats at this point, but oh well...
  9. My Upper Endoscopy is today… feeling really nervous (I hate being sedated). The next two weeks are jam packed with clearance tests and appointments (Cardiologist, Physical Therapy, Nutrition, etc) so I’m closer to getting my surgery date. If I’m this anxious about a procedure, worried I will be completely overwhelmed when it comes to surgery. Any advice for dealing with nerves and anxiety that helped get you through? Thanks in advance. :)

    May 2022 surgery?

    I've been taking miralax and within a couple of days I've been passing, it's a temporary solution but I think once we're on solids we'll be good. I heard of the 3 week stall, and Ive also heard that its normal and isn't something we should worry about. Stay strong!

    Thank you for your kind words. The best advice I would give anyone is to ‘be compliant.’ Follow your doctor and nutritionist’s protocol to a ‘T.’ I read some posts here and the difficulties people are having, granted, sometimes, yes, crap happens. But some of the stuff I read here boggles my mind. People pay little or no attention to the protocol they have been given. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would sabotage themselves that way. if someone had told me one week ago how amazing I would feel right now, I would have not a single second of nervousness or anxiety. I have a friend who had VSG done in October. She is also extremely compliant. She has lost 90 lbs and is at her goal weight. She is off her thyroid meds, and she says this surgery is the best thing she has ever done. I feel the same way about my surgery and I’m not even a week out. im already on a lower dose of my blood pressure meds. Follow the protocol, follow the process. Don’t cheat. These people know what they are doing. Good luck and let me know how it goes! You will rock this!

    I'm sad VERY SAD!

    Im 4 weeks out and questioning whether i should've done this, im experiencing pain when eating in soft phase so am reverting back to soups for a few days but im also feeling like there is no end to this, ive gone back to work now and honestly that is helping as its moving my focus away from the surgery. I'm not suggesting you do that now as you n body need time to recover but try something like drawing or paint by numbers as distraction, i did needlework (cross stitch) and that really helped too Sent from my SM-S908E using BariatricPal mobile app

    My First Binge :(

    Ah ok, i thought so as i couldnt imagine u could do this straight after surgery. I had sleeve done 4 weeks ago and im struggling with soft food stage, keep getting sick. Im reverting back to soups for few days to see if it helps. Did you manage to lose your goal weight? I wouldnt beat yourself up about your binge, i imagine its going to happen from time to time, guess the hard part is trying to ensure it doesnt happen too often.     June 2022 surgery buddies

    Hi, vabs: My surgery was last Wednesday, 6/8. I have never felt better in my life…I had a massive hiatal hernia that was repaired via gastric bypass. I found it helpful to have a pair of shoes that fit rather loosely to wear home from the hospital. It’s unavoidable to be bloated after surgery, and you will need comfy shoes till the Fluid dissipates I had a supply of sugar free popsicles in the freezer. I had about 6 boxes of them because a few weeks ago they were impossible to find. Broth…check the sodium levels. You won’t want to be retaining fluid. If you have a favorite Protein Shake, stock up. I was off Clear Liquids and on Protein Shakes from the day I arrived home which was 2 days post op. I also stocked up on sugar free Jello, crystal light, unsweetened ice tea, and I had ice packs in case I wanted to ice my incisions. I never needed a heating pad. I had a box of tegaderm Patches even though my incisions were covered. I used the tegaderm as a safety precaution. I had 45mg per bottle Fairlife Core shakes on hand because it’s a super easy way to get our Protein requirement. My nutritionist also highly recommended Fairlife Skim or 1% milk so I stocked up on that. And Decaf coffee pods. That’s all I can think of. I packed really lite for the hospital. I wore the hospital gown and I was given compression stockings in the hospital when I was being prepped for surgery. That’s all I can think of. Best of luck to you. You will do great. ❤️

    @lizonaplane & @ShoppGirl are correct. You’ve just had pretty major surgery, your hormones are out of whack, your digestive system has been altered, something you relied on to provide emotional support (food) has been taken away from you, … Give yourself time to heal & recover -physically, mentally & emotionally. And I’m going to say it: it does get better & easier. The staged return to eating is to support the healing of your tummy. In a few weeks on soft foods you’ll be able to have some of that tender beef stew (just no rice unless it’s cauliflower rice). Yes, it will be a much smaller portion but you’ll be eating more slowly so your family will finish their serve about the same time you likely be finished too. Think of all the new recipes you & your husband will be able to try or reinvent with alternative ingredients. I also agree with @lizonaplane suggestion to meet with a therapist. Many bariatric patients swear by the support they received through therapy & how it helped change their relationship with food, how they see themselves, etc. I still drink just not as often & not as much. I say I drink quality (like champagne not sparkling) not quantity now. I often go out to restaurants. French, Italian, Japanese, Greek, etc. fine dining, bistros, cafes. I’m just careful with my menu sections. And I’m not afraid to ask to take leftovers home even in fine dining restaurants (took home duck breast, duck rillette, parsnip purée & baby carrots the other night).
  16. I’m sure catwoman will respond too but I am also on birth control so I figured I would chime in. My period was weird for about three months after surgery. I had spotting and longer, heavier periods from those few months. Then it went back to my pre surgery normal and has been ever since.
  17. Can i also ask, did uou gind that after surgery, your period changed too? After surgery i was having spot bleeding, i had my period 2 weeks ago and i now have spot bleeding again.     How long ago did you have surgery? If it's in the last month or so, what you're feeling is completely normal; many people have "buyer's remorse" after surgery. I sure did! I couldn't eat anything without pain and nothing tasted good for three months or so. By about 4 months out, I started to enjoy eating again. I can eat pretty much anything now at nine months out, though smaller portions. Which is exactly what I wanted. I could eat beef stew with rice (although, I'm not a fan of rice!). I just have to be careful not to eat junk food, which I can eat too much of too easily. This is a very hard process and I recommend you meet with a bariatric therapist. My family and I really enjoy going out to eat and trying new foods when we travel. We still do that, I just don't finish everything now. You will still be able to enjoy your husband's cooking. I think I appreciate food more now because I'm actually savoring it, not just inhaling it. I think it will get better for you.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

    For the first few days all I had (and you will need) was water, jello, and clear broth. Actually, your clear liquid 2-day pre op diet continues that first week. Week 2 you can introduce protein shake, yogurt etc as you will be on a liquid diet. I'm still on my clear liquid and can't wait for Thursday to have yogurt.

    Two months

    I’m about two weeks post op and feeling a little depressed but this made me feel so hopeful!
  22. I have tried three different brands of multivitamins. No matter how I take it, I throw up some days. I bought some iron-free pills, but I will need to take iron, so I don't know what the point is if I take them separately vs together. I took iron with no issues prior to surgery. I just try to eat a big dinner late, or have a decent sized snack with fat before I take the pill, then go right to bed.

    Well it sounds like you are all doing well on your liver shrink diet which would be my first piece of advice. I had very little pain post op and after my dr commented twice on how well I did on the liver shrink diet I asked the NP if the two were related and she said that getting the liver out of the way definitely makes the surgery easier which means less bruising and stuff so yes that did help. The second piece of advice is to not compare yourself to others during your recovery or weight loss phase. We are all here to cheer each other on but every one of our paths will be unique. Don’t get discouraged if you are a slower loser or have more stalls than others. Trust the process and the weight will come off if you just follow the plan.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Yeh I really don't know how stalls and breaking of stalls function no matter how much I read on it LMAO. Though upping calories is a lot of work for me if I adhere to my diet guidelines. I don't want to feel like I am continuously eating throughout the day just to up my calories. I think I'll stick to whatever calories I can consume comfortably without pressuring myself to increase or decrease. Average for me also about 2ish Lbs/week but that includes all the weight I have lost in the first 6 months. Though, I have noticed that every other month I stall or lose slowly. So may be that's the pattern for myself, which again is fine as long as it is spiralling downwards. Just hope I don't stop anytime soon lol. I still have tons of inches especially in the middle which need to come off to a reasonable amount for my body to look symmetrical. Anyhow, let's see how my body progresses. It's good to keep this thread updated to see how everyone is doing.
