These photos were taken by the nurse at my bariatric surgeon, Dr. Eric Volckmann's office. Yes, I have an iron deficiency (actually, an ironing board deficiency... I do own an iron.) And, I know I look like I'm packing appendix and at 7 o'clock; however, even though I have an enhanced concealed carry permit issued by the state of Idaho, I do not carry because no matter what I do, I print. I'll explain why the front looks like that soon, but in the back, my shirt is just caught on my fat hip.
  2. Hello, I am new to this forum! I started the process in may (not thinking I would actually get approved), I attended a weight loss seminar may 31st. Their were about 4 papers to fill out and return then wait to be called by the patient coordinator supervisor. I was contacted within hours of turning the paperwork in. I was told that I was approved and I needed to pick a surgeon. After picking a surgeon the ball rolled pretty quick. I was scheduled to see the surgeon the first week in June. I was a great candidate for gastric sleeve and could go forward with the process. I then was assigned a bariatric coordinator that got everything lined up for me. I had to do one nutrition appointment, get a EKG, lab work, upper gi study and a psychological evaluation . Everything was quick except the evacuation for some reason it took 3 weeks to get scheduled. I also had to reach out to them. After getting no response from the psychologist, I reached out to my coordinator hoping she would be helpful. I slowly realized I was getting on her nerves with my many phone calls and voicemails. After calling 3 times I finally got a hold of her getting a preop appointment for 7/26. I’m a little concerned that she will not do what needs to be done when submitting for approval. I am now done with everything and waiting for my insurance company to approve me. With a surgery date of 8/6 my concern is I won’t be approved in time. After preop with the surgery how long after were you approved for surgery? I’m guessing I will know Thursday if I’m going forward with my surgery date or not.

That's my whole problem my doctor is not a bariatric surgeon he is a general surgeon and I never got a real plan for anything most things that I've learned I've learned from this site and you ladies so that's why I'm asking I don't know what to eat I know it's time for a change I just got off of soft foods like yogurt and I'm ready to switch to something else but I don't know what I'm I know high-protein but I don't know what to make Sent from my SM-J327T1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I know, I know... what is a librarian doing with a BSW and MSW?! Go figure! I was in social work briefly, but the funds were soft and I was a single parent + 3 kids, yadda yadda.....Well, I guess we'll have to share our research adventures in bariatric surgery living. That IS my lifestyle from now on. I can't wait to explore lo-carb/hi-protein cooking and baking down the road in the Kitchen Laboratory! I can't do processed foods, so must make everything. Looks like you are about 4 weeks ahead of me -- maybe you will have some menu or cooking tips at some point. I was just reading about Banza lo carb pasta...

How often have you gotten sick?

I've been seriously thinking about compiling a bariatric surgery / weight-loss glossary of terms and I thought, "Oh! A new word to add." Good thing you corrected your post. I would have wasted time looking for the definition of a term that doesn't exist.
  7. Note that when an article refers to "bariatric surgery" or "weight loss surgery" in the general sense - not specifying any particular procedure, they are typically referring to the RNY gastric bypass, as that is, or has been, the most common procedure over the past 20-30 years (and particularly in Canada and other countries that may have been slower to adopt newer procedures). If you have a different procedure, the article may or may not apply to you. The warning may still be valid - changes in diet after surgery may result in deficiencies even of the procedure that you have doesn't have any inherent relevant malabsorption - and the advice may still be sound - keep up with labs and maintain appropriate supplements, even if they may be different from what is anticipated in the article.

@nibble. Like you, finding out that obesity-is-now-a-disease was the impetus to find out if my insurance covered bariatric surgery. Fortunately, I didn't give up when my first phone call reached someone who mixed up my plan with another plan that did not have bariatric benefits. I became a squeaky wheel after that until I knew my benefits backwards and forwards, and if anyone tried to insert a requirement that wasn't in my plan, I let them know! One of the "requirements" that someone tried to convince me was a part of my plan had to do with not being allowed to gain any weight during the 6-month physician-directed weight-loss attempt. My plan required only that I do those six months. There was nothing in my plan that "punished" me for gaining weight during those six months. I've noticed several posters on this forum, primarily younger women, who aren't confident in being good self-advocates. Stop apologizing for everything. Stop allowing gatekeepers to keep you from getting the information you need. To make good decisions, you deserve to have all the facts. Read. Ask. Read some more. Keep asking. A librarian.. .. I considered library science for a while, but ended up getting a B.S. in health information management. Of course, that's not what I do for a living. Who else has a degree or degrees in areas that they don't work in?
  9. I'm a firm believer that husbands wives and young children sign up for the bariatric package (some dietary changes have to occur in their lives too) everyone else like mothers, fathers, adult children, sisters, brothers, roommates, etc they can support in other ways VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW 167

@nibble I am speechless. You wrote to the AMA and they wrote back to you? Wow! That's fantastic. How did it feel to pour such powerful emotions into a letter and then send it to the very people who had a role in our collective abilities to have life-changing surgery? Without that disease classification, insurance companies would not have included bariatric surgery as a covered benefit. I COULD NOT OPEN THE DOCUMENT. Boo-hoo. Thank you so much. Your idea to write that letter profoundly impressed me.
  12. People with severe obesity who undergo bariatric surgery have a higher risk for fracture both before and after the procedure. “To minimize the effect of bariatric surgery on bone, guidelines should be followed and the importance of adherence to supplements and physical activity should be reinforced among patients and healthcare professionals." https://www.healio.com/endocrinology/bone-mineral-metabolism/news/in-the-journals/{7e479b49-f551-4de5-a2c2-03b0718b1bdf}/fracture-risk-increases-with-bariatric-surgery IMPORTANT: Take your supplements! Vitamins! Minerals! And don't forget to excercise!
  13. And as I have said if I didn't have insurance coverage and could afford private pay Dr I plan would be the surgeon I would choose. Alex Brecher, Bariatric Pal's founder chose him for his own surgery, and I call that a strong recommendation.👍😷👍
  14. Men with obesity who underwent bariatric surgery reported an increase in sexual function and experienced an increase in sex hormone levels in the months after the procedure; however, a reported increase in sexual function among women with obesity who underwent surgery did not rise to significance... https://www.healio.com/endocrinology/obesity/news/in-the-journals/{495cad94-7580-4c27-a9b4-29fd9163e99a}/meta-analysis-bariatric-surgery-improves-sexual-function-in-men-but-not-women. . . . . You should keep in mind deficiencies from patches can take years to show up. There are reasons most bariatric programs do not support the use of them. In the meantime, can you try something like centrum adult chewables? Even flintstones chewables would be preferable over nothing. You may find as your bypass matures a bit you will become more tolerant to these items. In the interim you could use a chewable you tolerate. Prenatal, swallowable vitamins are not recommended post bypass. The item should be liquid or chewable, and capsule form when your program allows in most circumstances.

  17. Hello friends! Sorry I've been a bit absent lately. So I've got my surgery date- August 6. Doing the sleeve with Ultimate Bariatrics in Fort Worth. I start my 2 weeks pre-op diet tomorrow which consists of protein shakes, sugar free jello, pudding, and popsicles, and soup for dinner. The last 2 days are clear liquids only. Any tips for getting through this pre-op part would be appreciated because I have a feeling I'm going to be hungry a lot. I've been having a lot of food funerals, took photos and measurements, I've got my vitamins and stuff. Thanks everyone! Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

It's unpopular, but I LOVE MY BODY

I started to write to you but stopped. Maybe I will anyway. I went ahead and had children but I wasn't the play pal to them I could have been. No honey, mommy is too out of breath and can't do that! No mommy can't fit on that ride withyou, sorry honey. I did live to see my children grown, even got to love them instead of being a picture in a frame. More good luck than good planning. And when I decided to seek Bariatric Surgery I ran into a brand new bunch,of Nay-Sayers. I was too old,too silly too foolish to try doing this. I wouldn't be a success, I quit everything before, if not I could have lost weight the "normal"way. They had no clue how hard I tried. But the most hurtful thing I was told, and this was from a person I used to call "friend". Because I willfully insisted on doing this, I was pushing a younger more deserving person out of the way. Ooh this hurt, just like acid in a wound, I am and always have been a kind-hearted person. A no drama mama ,who gave in rather than hurt another person. I managed to,leave before crying, so they wouldn't know how bad that hurt. But I wish now. I had slapped or knocked them to the ground, and I am not prone to violence. But that would not have been of benefit, I can merely pray Karma circles around and punishes them for me. For I believe I truly am young enough. This is the right time to do the right thing for the right person's benefit MINE. And I will devote every breath remaining in my 72 year old body to doing this and doing it well. For I truly deserve THE BEST OF EVERYTHING!👍😛👍

I have a Tespo machine that uses powdered bariatric vitamins and makes it into a small "shot" to drink. Maybe that would help you. You actually dont need the machine. And can mix your own. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. I was talking to my husband about the judgement passed on people who have bariatric surgery. He is on the fence about the whole "easy way out" thing. But he is being supportive of me. So he tells me that when he thinks about the easy way out, he compares it to jumping off a plane. The easy way out would be when someone pries your fingers of the plane and pushes you out. That's the easy way out but the problem is that after that the is no getting back on the plane. So you are screaming all the way down hoping the parachute will open. My response was, think about it this way you are on a plane that has lost its engines. They tell you they are going to try landing it but chances are it will still be a crash landing and many on the plane will die. Or you can put on one of the parachutes and jump? So what do you choose? The plane is obesity. We know it is a killer. Some live long, normal lives while being obese, but the majority will get sick in various ways and die prematurely. If you jump, which is having the surgery, the parachute might not open but the chances of that are minimal. The parachute might open late and you will get seriously hurt, but you survive and end up living a long life. You might not land well because you don't know how to parachute and break your legs. But you still land and live. So which one do you choose? Stay on the plane and hope you survive the crash? Or jump and take the risks of jumping with the more likelihood of survival? It is a personal decision that only you can make for yourself. I choose to jump off the DAMN plane!!!! Because I am already on the plane and the only decisions you can make are jump or crash. The option to never get on the plane to begin with is long gone.
  21. Hello. New to the group. I've done all pre op testing, except for the EGD which is scheduled for August 1st. My bariatric surgery benefits become active on October 29, and the plan is to submit on that day. Looking forward to a November 2018 surgery date.

    July surgery

@MyBeesgirl you asked and I am repliying. I have not started my diet yet, I will August 1st. My diet says : for females weighing less than 400 lbs. No, I don't weigh 400 but the way my weight was skyrocketing,i could have before long. Okay here it goes. 1 daily bariatric or prenatal vitamin plus any your blood test shows you are deficient in. I take extra A, D, calcium citrate, iron and magnesium. 4 high protein meal replacement shakes I have,my choice of these as long as there are less than 200 calories, less than 10 grams fat, more than 10 grams protein, less than 10 grams carbs and above 10 grams protein. At this time, I'm leaning toward Premier Protein. 1 fruit must be small apple, small orange, small banana or 3/4 cup unsweetened fruit. Unlimited non-starchy vegetables Cooked or Raw. No pitatoes, corn or peas. Vegetable salad with light/low-fat dressing. No cheese nuts, dried fruit, egg, bacon. 1 meal either below 300 calorie frozen entree , also less than 30 calories carbohydrates OR 6oz lean meat(chicken, fish , turkey, pork) and 1 cup non-starchy vegetable 64 oz or more calorie-free, caffeine-free beverages and water. So Sample Menu Breakfast 1 meal replacement shake Snack 1 fruit Lunch Salad with 2 oz light dressing & meal replacement shake Snack 1 meal replacement shake Dinner Frozen Entree Snack 1 meal replacement, shake My Bariatric Hospital is Ohio State University Hospital Columbus Ohio 43210 and my surgery will be Wednesday September 5th At 7 AM EDT, my surgeon is Bradley J Needleman MD and I am excited to have it fiinally happen and i,will be having a RnY bypass.😛👍😛
  24. oops REBIRTHDAY, this phone has a mind of its own & posts when it feels like it . Imanewme fast food is not good for you as a pre surgery patient. Ditch buns fries and breading. Bunless Arbys Roast beef might be okay, try Steamfesh veggies in the microwave. Let me tell you my pre surgery diet. 4 high protein shakes, my choice as long as they are above 15 gm protein and low carb, 2 snacks: here my choice is small apple, small orange, banana or 3/4 cup berries. And then my dinner is a 300 calorie low carb frozen dinner, and I have a choice of many brands or comparable home cooked, no potatoes corn or peas. And all the water and unsweetened decaffeinated drinks my little ❤ kidneys and stomach can stand. Keep up my vitamins and all is lovely . So when you 2 are having your surgeries I will be starting on my 4 weeks of dietary purgatory. Can I do it? Think so, but I may not be a happy camper, I'll be hangry, that's a combine of hungry and angry, headaches , tearful and not much fun to be around. And even the weather will change, you know how many tornadoes start up in Oklahoma, well there is one gonna be brewing in Ohio and I may be as bad a cyclone as a Texas Twister. And in the words of. your stalemate Justin Wilson from Louisiana, I gar- un- tee this! But I will soldier on and get through this, everybody who does a diet does. I have a bari-pal on here, kinda lorded it over me " Ha ha Frustr8, I DON T HAVE TO DO A PREDIET" Karma circled around and bit her in the rump. Her doctor made her do 7 weeks after of clear and murky liquids before she ever got soft pureed solids. Now who's laughing? Feel free to ask any questions you may have, I've been active,on Bariatric Pal for 8 months done a lot of study, if I don't have an answer someone else,on BP will. And welcome both of you, we are thrilled to have you!😛👍🌈
  25. Hi Newbies. My name is Frustr8, I live in Central Ohio, and imanewme I'm old enough to be your aunt or big sister and Sabrina easily your grandmother. I ha e been on my journey towards Bariatric Surgery for 3 years, it will be over that when my surgery finally takes place. On September 5th I will have a RnY bypass at Ohio State University Hospital with Bradley J Needleman MD and i am not self-pay like you ladies. Since I am 72, my primary is Medicare, my secondary Medicaid, really not too many hoops to jump through. See I went through one bariatric facility's program not once but twice, quite a story about that! When the surgeons there refused to do my surgery, pretty unethical, I think, I switched to a program at a better hospital, as it turns out a State University with a wonderful, skilled surgeon I have no trouble trusting with my life. So when you ladies are starting on your post- surgery life I will be starting my my pre surgery diet. Ohio State gave me my choice of 2, 3, or 4 weeks, 2 is minimum they mandate, of course they prefer 4 weeks, you heal smoother, quicker and your surgery will be easier for all concerned. Well,at my age, and much,as I hate to admit,it, I am older to be seeking surgery. I want things as smooth as I can make them.Although I am body-wise in pretty good shape, my PCP says I am 45 in a 72 year old shell, I may not bounce back as quick as a 20-30 year old. I probably am one of the older patients they have done. I am lucky in Dr Needleman, many facilities turn you down if you are above 60, some if you are above 70, but,I'm still going forward with a strong will and commitment and believe I can succeed. So September 5th 2018 at 7 AM. E.D.T. is my REBIRTHDA
