Thanks Jack. I didn't realize that over time we would lose our adaptive capability in our liver, and become toxic with minute amounts of alcohol and sugar. What a trip. When I think what I used to drink, and the buckets of ice cream I used to eat, my liver must have been lined with steel! Mega bottles of water later.... I feel better.

pre-op egd found gastritis..am i ok to still have band?
Blund replied to leoyne's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It was part of my first surgeon's visit/questions. Told them I get heartburn on occasion, and they wanted to do a EGD, which is where they put the scope down your throat to see your stomach. Thought was I might hav a Hiatal hernia which would be fixed when the band put in, but instead I have gastritis. I wasn't sure what it was either, but I went to WebMD to find out. Its an infection/irritation in the stomach lining. It can be cronic, or a single time. Causes of it are stress, medications (ibuprofin, asprin, etc.), alcohol, etc. All the fun stuff. My surgeon's office called back and said it would not keep me from getting the band. It isn't really serious, I guess. It feels like I have a rock in my stomach sometimes....more discomfort than pain. Congrats on your approval and surgery date! I'm getting anxious...my shrink appt is tomorrow, then everything gets sent to BC for review. -
I am being banded on Tuesday and am on my pre-op diet and doing well. I am having a social dinner with girlfriends tomorrow and would like to have a few cocktails. I can choose low carb alcoholic drinks but am concerned about my liver and the Dr. not being able to preform the surgery. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this.

That's a really terrible question to ask someone during the evaluation. Mine asked about my home life growing up...if I was close to my parents and siblings. He mostly wanted to know that I had researched the procedure and that I didn't just impulsively jump into this...like I could with all the hoops lol. Also lots of questions about drug and alcohol use.

I am having a hard time finding ANYONE that's had surgery my age ????????
Mw116004 replied to Alyssa0102's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey guys I'm 23 and from Pittsburgh Pa. It is absolutely hard to find someone my own age but I am fortunate to know about 4 close people in my life that have had the bypass or band. I had my surgery on 8.26.15. I am almost at my one week! I'm still in a lot of pain though and my back actually hurts just as bad as my stomach. I am interest how people our age handle alcohol (once they are healed of course) all my friends are still in their parting stage and wanna go out and drink. My birthday is 9.16.91 and it was actually hard to find something to do that is not food or alcohol related. Any advice? Feelings? Experience? -
Drinking for the first time! Tips?
Aribay1 replied to Aribay1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your month pre op?idk maybe you ment post op but thats crazy!!!!! I was told around 7 to 8 months or later! I didnt have issues but i did feel my stomach kind of burn or sting but other then that i was good. I felt like i handled my alcohol like i would have pre op but not drinking and going out every weekend has saved me a fortune so it was only once and god knows when ill drink again but not anytime soon! -
@Ivlpar Stuff happens. I see a lot of people picking vodka. I know when I was on Adkins, I drank diet coke and rum. Yes, yes, I know we aren't supposed to drink alcohol or drink carbonated beverages. But some of of us "chose" to imbibe in moderation. I can hardly drink. It hits me hard AND I get full. Only my opinion!

Post-Band Eating Question
dawalsh replied to Bandista's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have absolutely no problem adjusting to any social situation. If it's in a restaurant I portion. Out what I can eat and ask for a take out container right away. If I go to a partyI'll take a taste of this or that and incorporate it into my calorie count. If I get samples from Sam's I always ask to see the nutritional label so I can add those calories in my count. I use an app called my fitness pal and I log the calories right then and there. There are a lot of good apps that keep you accountable and you'll be able to adjust to any situation involving eating. Let's face it, you can stop drinking alcohol but you can't totally stop eating. We need nourishment to survive. Before you know it your new eating habits will become second nature to you. Good luck! -
There is also the correlation between alcohol consumption and weight gain. I have read quite a bit about the increase in consumption and alcoholism concerns due to covid19.

I worried about the psych eval but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I found the questions to be more about drugs and alcohol and how do we cope with things. I've never had a drug or alcohol problem. Tell the truth. They will find a way to ask the same question multiple times and in multiple ways. That was my experience. I don't know if all tests are the same. NikkiDoc replied to lapnicky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Apparently my doctor is not worried about the carbonation stretching my stomach. I am allowed it after 6 months. Same with alcohol. -
Diet Soda... good or evil??
txprime replied to txprime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the additional info L12... I was sure to check that we could still drink alcohol hahaha.. but have heard so many conflicting stories...I was not a 12 pk (of soda) or even six pak a day drinker.. but for sure had a 12 oz once a day. I think perhaps the Drs. use the band as an instrument to change other bad lifestyle habits.. but I could be too conspiracy theory there. Thanks again. -
My daughter was sleeved on 4/4/16. Has been having nausea dry heaving. The recovery nurse showed her a trick with alcohol prep pads. Just rips one open sticks it under her nose. Works wonders. Hope this helps some one else. Good luck every one

I am a success...that has failed to continue
prairie replied to Roo101769's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
You're intelligent, self-aware and you've done this before. You can do it again and be successful. I agree with the person who suggested going back to a week one diet. I'd suggest the pre-op diet. You need to eliminate carbs. Treat them like alcohol and you're an alcoholic. There's no such thing as "I'll just have one drink/chip/lb of pasta" for people like us. You made a powerful decision before and changed your life. You are STRONG. Every time you fall down, just get back up again. It's never the end. Nothing you've done is irreversible. You won't be perfect, but you can be *better. * -
Stretching Your Sleeve?
lsereno replied to cdscott89's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You really can only stretch your tummy so much. If you eat more solid food, it will fill up quickly. At over a year out, I sitll max out at 4 oz. of solid Protein, and generally am very full with 3 oz. At first, I could only eat 1 oz. of solid protein with nothing else. Now I can enjoy a small amount of vegtables and a starch with my protein. For now, I think the important thing is to concentrate on making healthy food choices, getting enough protein and Fluid every day and avoiding eating so fast or so much that you feel ill. In my opinion, the thing to watch for as time goes by is eating things that go down easy, such as chips, popcorn, candy, ice cream, cakes and Cookies, etc. Or drinking a lot of calories, such as milk shakes, coffee drinks, or sweet alcoholic drinks. For example, I was in Starbucks on vacation. I could have chose the pumpkin Spice Latte and a slice of the Pumpkin Bread for a total of 630 and 17 grams of protein. Instead, I got my usual Soy Latte and an oatmeal, which I ate with Splenda, saving the nuts and dried fruits for a salad another day. 270 and 12 grams of protein. (I was excited to see they had Greek Yogurt Parfait till i read the nutrition info - 6 grams of protein and 270 calories! - it pays to read the label!) I do enjoy treats, but I pace myself. They are treats now, not everyday all I can eat extravaganzas. It's working for me. I've maintained my weight since March. Yeah Sleeve! Lynda -
Do you have a Treat, what is it, and how often.

One Week & 10 pounds Gone into Pre-Op
2beskinny posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have lost 10 pounds on one week of pre-op - Medifast Supplements. I was so hungry and had so many headaches the first few days...I didn't think I could make it. Now it is much better. Yesterday, however, I was playing in a golf outing. Told my girlfriends upfront that I could not stay for the dinner portion (they do not know about my surgery). Long story short - I ended up staying for the dinner portion. I ate lean ham and 1/4 cup of cole-slaw. I couldn't get out of it and I didn't want to draw attention to myself by not eating. I am sure I stayed within the calorie and carb counts for the day. I did not eat the potatos, baked beans, chips and brownies that they offered . I did not drink any alcohol all day either (my first time doing that during 18 holes of golf!). I'm just not going to beat myself up over it. I did not use this slip as an excuse to raid the fridge (the old me would have). I am back on track today and doing great! There have been so many times when I could justify eating a little protein, or a veggie, as so many don't even have pre-op diets...but I stuck to the plan. Funny that I ended up being in a situation where I ended up doing it anyway. I really didn't even enjoy it. It certainly didn't feel like cheating! I'm sure it will be fine - the protein bars that are part of my diet plan have 15 carbs in them. I don't think the coleslaw had more than that...and I didn't eat the protein bar that day. My surgery is one week from today . I'm already not sleeping very well. I can't wait to get this behind me!!!! -
I had a glass about 3 months post op, the alochol did not affect me any differently from pre op to post op. You just need portion control and alcohol is empty calories so drink smart !!
-
Personal choice for me is I'm not drinking... Wasn't really much to drink a glass so not a big deal. I will say I have read many studies of high rates of addiction to alcohol with rny patients. I think it's a waste of calories and pouch space.

I've noticed that, too, and it really burns me up. I personally believe that I should be allowed the same number of breaks as a smoker is, or that they should be forced to sign out and lose pay every time they take a smoking break. I don't like people getting paid to smoke, especially if it means that I have to work more because of it. Yes, I know it is a physical addiction and that people think they can't go without smoking, but alcoholics aren't given paid drinking breaks, are they? All I can say is that if I had a business and caught my employees sneaking outside for smoking breaks without signing out first, they would get fired. I feel that they would essentially be stealing from the company because they are getting paid for time that they did not work. I wouldn't be able to prosecute them, but I would fire them if they had done it repeatedly. I know people will say, "It isn't that much.", but it does add up. If you use the figures that Carlene provided, and the person is earning $10/hour (which isn't that much), you could be potentially losing $750 per month, per person. If you have several employees, and you live in an area of the country where smoking is very common, it could severely affect your bottom line.

Too late. That already happened. An airline asked a fat guy to get off the plane because he weighed too much. Again, too late. I interviewed for a job but didn't get hired because the guy told me I was too fat to fit into the office space. Also, airline attendants and myriad other jobs have weight restrictions. They already do that for smokers, as well as the obese. Well, they will probably cover you, but for a much higher premium. Wootsie, I agree with you and will restate my position. This is simply an issue of Politically correct control; smokers are looked at as pariahs -- even those who are so very careful never to smoke around anyone. When I smoked, I took GREAT pains to ensure that my cigarette smoke was NEVER around another human being, but I was still looked upon like I was a substandard, second-class human being, as evidenced by the judgmental tenor of the majority of the comments in this thread: "If you smoke cigarettes, you are unworthy of being in the human race, and I am SO much better than you." It's just that attitude -- and not the law -- that rubs me the wrong damn way. A non-smoker is not better than me, if I choose to smoke. Just as a slender person is not better than me, if I choose to be obese. Just as a non-drinker is not better than me if I choose to drink alcohol. This is just another one of the myriad PC movements, and the cigarette smokers are getting they turn on the "let's bash a minorty" pile. A few years back it was the people who wore real fur coats. They were labeled as inhuman simply because they chose to wear an animal pelt. Well, that "bashing" ran its course, people wear fur again without fear of recrimination, and now it's some other cause in the headlines. And please spare me the "but because of your choice to smoke, I don't get a choice of NOT getting cancer from your smoke" argument. I've heard it a ka-zillion times, and I'm not saying that it's not a valid argument. What I have a problem with is this holier-than-thou attitude running rampant through this nation -- and this thread. No one is entitled to think that they are better than me, for whatever reason. Go ahead.....bash away at me now.

After surgery, I am looking forward to...
iegal replied to Foxbins's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Changes in just over three months are beyond words. I am thrilled with results of VSG surgery. I can hop onto (or on) the bed without breaking the slats or frame. Yes, I have once beause I now CAN do this. Jumping into my finacee's arms. Feeling my kids arms ALL the way around me with a big hug. Looking at myself in the mirror and being happy with myself and my choices that day. The thought of being able to hike without worrying about being a burden or forcing all to turn around. Natural acceptance of others, not judgement without knowing me. I have not changed, expect physically. Lord, let me be more empathic to all. Fitting into clothes I never thought I would be able to get into or look good in. Shopping for clothes that are not black only. I even bought a top with horizontal stripes and looki good in it. food not being an obsession. Really, I used to go to sleep planning my food excursions for the next day or week. I go to the gym without worrying about others thinking "yeah honey - excercise is good, but stop shoveling in the food" Sharing my victories with those I love. I now have a better understanding of those with addictions like drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. I am a food addict in recovery. Wish my fellow addicts had a tool like my little sleeve to overcome their problems. The money I save on eating out is tremendous. Not being embarassed everytime I enter an airplane and fly coach. I pull that belt tight now and smile. Purging....my closet of course. Twice now. Not huffing after one flight of stairs or feeling a little light headed. Wearing a cute nightie...and the good kind made of lace or chiffon - not made of flannel. Shopping at Victoria Secret...in the store and trying on a new smaller bra. Accepting responsibility for myself and my future. -

Quarantine and Drinking
WInston223322 replied to Slim_mommee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am going the other way! I do drink and have drank since about 3 months out. I agree with all of you that the calories in Vodka or any alcohol are high, However during this journey I relied on it to end the days stress and go to sleep. Now the old days would be lots of drinks, Now its just a Vodka and Flavored Protein water for me and Night Night - I do feel for you with the stress it is really getting to me also, My company is shut down and hemorrhaging money daily. So my view is if one drink helps - Go for it - Just exercised it off the next day
