  1. Got on the scale today and I am up 4 pounds from last week!!! CRAP!!!! Is this normal, does this happen, how can I not freak out about this?? ???? My brain is going crazy with a million thoughts. Did I stretch my pouch, can I eat more than I should, is this my fault from eating something a little too calorie high? Did I not exercise enough? I feel like I want to cry

    smoking

Patients who are scheming to have lap band surgery are inquired to stop smoking six to eight weeks before surgery. Patients who do not smoke have less difficulties and it takes not less than a month for the lungs to recover. Smoking damages the lungs which raises the possibility of surgical difficulties. Quitting smoking is powerfully recommended.
  3. Hi everyone! I was banded on December 3rd and I did a pre op diet for two weeks as well as a three day liquid pre op right before surgery. My doc didn't require the two week, but from what I read it seemed it would make it easier on my body. I lost about 10 lbs doing that and then I have lost another 15 since the day before I was banded. I am pretty stoked. However, I have read A LOT on here about how you shouldn't focus on weight loss in the beginning. I know that now is a time for healing. I have been taking it easy and following the diet regimen I was given. But I guess I am nervous. I have read that I should anticipate a gain when I am given the okay for more solid food. So can you guys give me an idea how much I may gain back? Is it a definite that you gain back some? Because I plan to eat the same type things I have been, just not blended. Anyhow, please share your storeis! Thanks! ~Mya

    Acid Reflux Problems-Need Help!

Ask your Dr if it's possible you have a hiatal hernia (not sure my spelling is correct on that). I had one and didnt know it. He repaired it during my lapband surgery and i've only had one bout since surgery! Before surgery, it was a couple times a week, and i was on double doses of protonix, morning and night. Now, i'm only on single doses once a day and as i said only one time in 4 months! Good luck to you! Tkl
  6. I found out yesterday that my paperwork was submitted on 1/21/15 to the insurance company. This has been the longest 3 months. The real game has begun...now I just sit back and wait. I called the insurance company this morning and of course, it's pending. They will be hearing from me every single day. sooooooo excited! Lord now I just pray I'm approved! I may need someone to pick me up if this doesn't go the way I hope.
  7. Hello; I am being submitted for approval tomorrow and am concerned because I was told that Medicare requires among other things, 5 years worth of doctor notes with weight information. Like many overweight people, I didn't like to be weighed. So for my notes, I only have the last 3 years notes with weights and the first 2 years it says I refused to be weighed. Has anyone else run into this particular problem? I was told that some insurance companies will take pictures if the date of the pic is shown on the pic. I am hoping not to be denied, but was wondering that if they are a stickler for this information, what can I do. I cannot speak to the pre-cert department with United Health Care as they will only speak with the provider. Member services is just telling me to wait until the information is submitted and see if they contact my doctor for more information. I am really started to stress over this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. K

    Dumping...

I never experienced dumping until I was about seven months post-op. Even then I did not have any vomiting. I ate some red grapes and the light headedness hit me about an hour later. Most folks (about 2/3) experience dumping within 15 to 30 minutes following a meal. The other 1/3 don't have any symptoms for one to three hours. How do you know it's dumping? Dumping is caused by the rapid movement (dumping) of food from the pouch into the small intestine. The symptoms are thought to be caused by the dumping of large amounts of sugars into the small intestine (hyperglycemia). In response, the body releases large amounts of insulin to absorb the sugars which causes your blood sugar to crash (hypoglycemia). Once you understand what dumping is and you connect it with what you ate, pretty easy to put the two together and know that it's dumping. In the case of my grapes, I was curious so I checked my blood sugar which was 50 - the insulin released by my body caused my sugar to crash and the light headedness followed. Dumping is not very pleasant but in the overall scheme of things, it is not considered serious from a medical perspective in all but the rarest of cases. It's also worth noting that you might experience dumping with a particular food but eat the same food weeks or months later and have no problem. So you may want to try some foods periodically.
  9. My surgery date was 3/1 and 1 day after surgery I have a cold. I've been sneezing and caughing quite a bit. I hope I don't do any damage to my surgery site. mizzzrenee
  10. Congrats on having a date for your sleeve! You are wise to start to make changes now. I really did not do much in the way of dieting before getting sleeved and I so somewhat regret that (especially when I see someone's ticker who has a surgery date near mine and they have 2x the amount of weight because they dieted BEFORE the sleeve!) I could not let my BMI drop below 40 to be covered under my insurance, so mentally that just gave me a reason "not" to diet. BUT, the changes that I did make before getting sleeved were these: I dropped the diet soda habit. I didn't have a problem doing this (I used to drink 1-2 diet sodas per day) and back in July I quit buying soda to have in the house. So it then became an occassional treat when I would be eating out. Then sometime in early Sept. I just quit. (AND YOU CAN DO THE SAME WITH THE SWEET TEA! I would start by decreasing the amount of sugar you put in your tea, or switch to Splenda.) I also quit the coffee/caffeine habit. (beware because even regular non-sweet tea has caffeine...and I love non-sweet tea but not the caffeine.) I switched my coffee to decaf before surgery and didn't have coffee for 4 weeks post-surgery. I also decreased my carb intake. Just little changes. Instead of eggs and toast, I would drop the toast. I got in the habit of not drinking with my meals. I started taking my Vitamins BEFORE surgery to get me in the habit of taking them daily. I already was a regular exerciser, so I didn't have to do much there, but if you do not exercise I would recommend starting something you can stick with. Just even starting to walk will help you recover post-surgery, and walking is not only good, but necessary post-surgery to help prevent blood clots. THIS WILL BE AN AWESOME YEAR FOR YOU!!! I think attitude and gratitude makes a huge difference in this whole process. Going into this with the right attitude and having gratitude that you are being given a opportunity to change your life will carry you far! Good luck with everything!

    What about the grapes??

I agree with Rick, plus you probably won't be able to eat the whole cup. For cravings, I usually wait a few weeks before I indulge to see if it is a fleeting whim. If it is still there after that time has passed I have a a tiny bit of whatever it was I was craving to get rid of it. I wish I could have grapes but even eating just one hurts, so no grapes for me.

    Port movement

Hi guys. First time posting. Ive had my lapband in for 3 weeks. Im doing really well but im worrying myself sick about the position of my port. Its moved about 5 inches to the left of where it was at the beginning. Below is a pic of me on my side. Sent from my SM-G920I using the BariatricPal App
  13. At 3 months out I wake up with gross breath fairly often still. I think it is ketosis as well. I just carry mouthwash around and I also brush more often. It's yucky but I'm dropping weight so I'll deal.

    Ugh! Gained! Help!!! :-(

I follow that same path of weight loss as dhales. I was at 192-194 for 10 days, then over one weekend I dropped to 188. Now I flirt between 188-192 for the last week. So if the trend continues, I'll drop to 185 and hang out between 185-188 for a few weeks. I used to sweat it but not anymore. tmf
  15. I had the sleeve in 2013 and am in the process of looking to revise to a DS. I am extremely worried about the insurance portion. I know "everyone's insurance is different" I get it. Having been through the insurance stuff before I do realize it's case by case etc. I have Aetna and I did read the policy jacket and all that. I just want to know is there anyone on here that was approved for a second surgery and if so what is your story? I have had a little regain but been stalled over a year and a "twisted" sleeve it looks like cobblestones on top of each other. My BMI is 37. NO COMORBIDIES (sp?) Has anyone been approved in a similar situation?

So... 2011 In Restrospect. How Was Your Year?

Love this topic! For me, like the rest of you, 2011 was a banner year. January to February I spent going through the motions and various required visits for insurance to cover VSG. This included various freak outs as to what I was doing and if I would ever eat normal again. March 1st became an icon date in my life when I had surgery. I literally feel my life should be measured pre and post VSG. I lost weight very quickly- more than 50 lbs. in two months. As I dropped weight I found a level of confidence that I am not sure I have ever possessed previously. In June, I applied for a position on a lark that seemed waaaayyyy out of the realm of possibility. Well, the confidence came through and they hired me! In July, I decided it was time to pursue a goal that I secretly thought unattainable and signed up for a 1/2 marathone training program even though I could barely run a mile. Two weeks ago, I ran 14!!! Over the course of this year I have lost 111 lbs, and gone from a tight 24 to a solid 14 (and sometimes 12). Heck, I even lost a shoe size! This year has been equal parts amazing and terrifying. I am not sure I ever realized how scary it would be facing food demons and embracing all that I have to offer the world. Have you guys noticed that too or is it just me? Regardless, yay for us!! Amanda

    Pain at 7 weeks.

It's pretty near constant today but the previous week it has been come and go, usually hurts after I eat. Where does the abscess form? What is the treatment? Thank you! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    February 16th was my RNY

Hi Kare.1768! I had my RNY on 2/16 as well. Because I am a girl who is 6ft tall, I was told to get between 100-120g of protein. My liquid intake has to match this as well. My weightloss is averaging about 2-4 pounds a week. I got a little discouraged at first seeing everyone dropping like 20 pounds right off the bat, but I have to remind myself to keep on keeping on. I will say that so far I am able to tolerate all foods so far. No dumping or vomiting. Knock on wood! Congratulations on your loss!

  21. I had my surgery 4-24-12. Since then I did the week of clear liquids. Then last Monday I was told to start my protein shakes (3a day). That didnt work too well... Made me very nauseous. So I haven't really been drinking them. In addition my vitamins make me instantly nauseous so I haven't been so good with those. I am currently trying to find other options. My nut said I can hav some egg whites, cooked veggies, applesauce and some cheese. But the main reason I'm writing is because I feel scared and have some anxiety.... Am I ever going to feel "normal" again and not be afraid to eat food and get enough nutrients in I guess I'm looking for someone who is a few months out that went through a stage of doubt and fear after surgery... How long did that last? How do you feel now? Thank you

    Lapband Surgery - Diabetes

My blood sugars were fine during the liquid stage. I was borderline Type 2, on 500mg of Metformin 3 times a day. I was removed off my meds prior to surgery and have never went back on. My blood sugars continue to be in the normal range! Best of luck!

    Weight Loss

From a similar thread... 1. The first 6 weeks are for healing. You cannot expect to lose weight for the next 6 weeks, and if you do count yourself lucky. Stay off the scale. 2. The scale isn't your only measure of success. Take your body measurements. Are you feeling better about yourself? Those all count as well.
  24. Hey everybody! I hope some of you can relate and give me some peace of mind! So I’ve been making some spinach/feta/egg white wraps the past couple nights for dinner and timing my bites, 1-5 minutes between nibbles, and after I’ve finished I feel so horribly full. I weigh and measure everything, I know my macros. Anyway, Im thinking I should definitely eat only half. I know for sure that last night and tonight I ate more than I should have. Is this common for everyone when navigating the new regular diet? I’m so scared that I’m going to start stretching my pouch out early on and sabotage myself. It can’t just be me?!

    7 weeks out, perfecting portions

Though you should stay within your program's guidelines because in the beginning your stomach is healing so you don't get the full signal sometimes for weeks or months. Hence it is important to follow your diet guidelines and portions, at least initially. Do reach out to your doctor if guidelines aren't clear or you need more guidance.
