    1 year out -98lbs

Wow!! 98 pounds in a year that is an amazing accomplishment you should be so proud! I am waiting to be banded and I hope that I can be as successful. Did you loose weight pre-band or did it all come off after you were banded? Congratulations!!
  2. @@cbonet The fact you lost ANY weight 5 days post-op is excellent! Others who lose faster may have more weight to lose - or they had more Water weight to lose (depending on whether they had a pre-op diet or how they ate prior to surgery). Your loss is not slow - nearly 10 lbs in 2 weeks is a great loss! Stay strong - you're going to stall - you need to follow your program and just keep working at it.

    Weight gained

I'm post op and for the first time in ten months of diet and the surgery I've GAINED A 1lb this week I could just scream I'm so mad at myself
  4. Just know that when you have alot to lose like I did, and people notice that you have lost a considerable amount of weight, they may very well assume you had WLS. I've dropped basically a whole other person in terms of the amount of weight I've lost and I know the women in my department are likely assuming I had WSL. The guys only notice I'm smaller...they don't wonder how I did it.. But these days, WLS is so prevalent that I think most folks make that assumption. I've had a few people ask me outright what I did and I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are asking because they see I've been successful, and not just because they are nosy. I tell them I went on a strict food plan and am staying around 1,000 calories daily. Most people I work with knew I had severe joint issues as I've been on a cane for more than two years and once they found out I had bilateral hip replacement, they are satisfied with my answer that I needed to lose weight to prepare for the surgery. It's all true and the only thing I leave out is the lapband part. And I do that because I'm not comfortable talking about it, not because I fear any negative response.
  5. I also kept it quiet except for close family and 2 friends I knew I could trust. I was out on a Thursday and returned on the following thursday. Since I took personal time without pay I just told my boss I was having a medical procedure done and left it at that. People asked questions when I returned but I just told them I was taking care of some medical issues and left it at that. Nobody asked anything further than that. And I work with nice but GOSSIPY females!!!! Hopefully that you just called in sick for 2 days there will be little questioning….if they do you can use any assortment of reasons….stomach virus is always a good one. Do you think people will be questioning you about your absence?? And when they started noticing my weight loss which was a while later I just told them the truth…i've been working hard to eat smaller portions of high Protein and lower carbs and walking, walking, walking…it IS the truth!!! Its harder now that I updated my wardrobe to fit the weight loss that Im getting bombarded with questions…I still use that same explanation as above!!!!! Hope that helps you in some way…hope you are feeling great and good luck returning to work!!!

Wowser on the elliptical, I still can't go past 5 minutes without thinking I'm going to die!!! Patience.. Seems like forever away now, but pretty soon when you're good and filled, things will be right with the world ;o) I couldn't get a fill for 6 months, I had a couple months of absolutly no weight change, 1 month of gaining a couple pounds.. and I still lost 100lbs in the first 12 months!!

    Struggling

I'm just shy of 3 months out. 10/217 was my surgery day. I did pretty well for the first 8 weeks or so. For the last two weeks or so, I seem to be losing and gaining the same one or two pounds. I know I weigh too often. I need to stop doing that. I do feel like I am shrinking. My clothing is almost falling off of me and everyone is commenting on my weight loss. I'm just not seeing in on the scale. Would love to hear from anyone who has worked through this issue. I am trying to remain positive and focus on my protein and water.

    Struggling

I’ve hit a three week stretch before where I bounced around within 2 lbs. I never stopped weighing myself, but I tried to be scientific about it and ask myself: are you eating okay? Are you exercising? Are you sleeping? Are you stressed? I really focused on these 4 things at the beginning of my stall and ....I didn’t lose any weight for three weeks. There are some things that are up to us, and there are some things that are not. Good Luck! VSG 10/11/17 HW 336 SW 306 CW 255 GW 206

    Eating Disorder

Man, I really can relate to so much of this. I do a "chew and spit" thing all the time, too. Not only do I not enjoy food but the process of planning what to eat or forcing myself to eat is extremely anxiety-inducing for me, too. I didn't have all of these complications you had to deal with, but from day 1 I've had a really (irrational) intense worry that my new stomach isn't strong or that if I get something stuck it will just tear or explode... things that don't even really make sense or have any chance of actually happening. I feel much, much better when I restrict my calories. Maybe not physically. But mentally, on the days I have some reason (whether real or invented) to greatly restrict my calories, I feel like I'm doing well. The days I actually eat 1000-1200 calories - I've only had two of these days - I feel absolutely horrible and the urge to drink nothing but a Protein shake or two the next day is almost unbearable. The fact that I do lose more when I starve and stall or gain when I eat enough, coupled with how good my bloodwork still looks, just reaffirms my positive reaction to not eating enough and my anxiety and self-criticizing just pushes me further away from actual physical health. I'm in therapy too. Let's hope we both kick these problems in the ass in the end.
  12. Congrats to your weight loss!! I'm so happy for you all and look forward to posting my own weight loss after my surgery in March/April.

    Intimidating

I think an elliptical would be great, but you should really use it before you buy it to make sure it's a good fit for you. Ellipticals have different stride lengths. The one I love at my gym makes my workout partner really hurt because we have different stride lengths. She prefers the one at our community center while it makes me feel like I'm taking baby steps. I love my recumbent bikes, though. You can vary the intensity and it's much easier to use than the elliptical, at least early in your weight loss journey. If you have knee problems, the bike is a great way to get in an intense workout without killing your knees.

    Total Unfill

Let me give ya'll some advice .. If you have to get a TOTAL unfill do NOT do what my dumb ass has done and eat like HELL . I have gained 8lbs since my unfill nearly 2 months ago and MAN is it not a good feeling. I have done it to myself . I could have gotten filled nearly a month before I did , because i was going on vacation I decided to stay unfilled while on vacation so i could eat what ever the hell i wanted. NOT SMART !!! So the moral of the story if you have to get totally unfilled be smart about what you eat , dont go nuts like i did . Now instead of 25 or so pounds to goal im nearly 35 !!! UGHHH . SMART Mindy REAL FREAKING SMART! I have my fill on Thursday THANK GOD . Because what people do not know is when you get TOTALLY Unfilled. YOu can eat like you do not have a band anymore. At least I can and THAT MY FRIENDS is a SCARY FEELING !!! :frown:

    been thinking

I think I understand . . .only for me, "feeling normal" was "being big" --big child, big teenager, big momma, then fat momma! Five years ago I got banded and without any of the complications here, lost about 5-10 pounds a month (1-2 pounds a year) and one day I was 100 pounds less --242 to 142 --I'm 5'9. There were some psychological changes too --I called my doctor's nurse (I only saw him for the six fills and one unfill --then he died) --because I was worried I'd starve to death --she said that fear was normal, about the time you start feeling bones under your skin, you start worrying about "what if I can't stop" --but "we're here" she said and assured me I wouldn't starve to death. One day in the mall, I saw an attractive woman and thought how I had a similar shirt --only it WAS me in a mirror! ME! and I thought I was attractive!!! Until then, I avoided looking at my reflection . . . And size by size I went down. And down. And down. When I hit the weight I wanted, I got a face lift, dyed my hair platinum blonde and got rid of EVERY stitch of clothing I owned "before" I sold every sinlge thing on ebay or gave to Good will ---then I bought underware at Victoria's Secret, clothes from ebay and Goodwill --but with labels from Gap and TAlbots --as high end as I could afford and find and I bought NEW SHOES (my feet shrank too) with HIGH HEELS. I wear makeup every day!! Do I feel normal? Heck NO! I feel great!!! :-)

    1 month Post-Op

The short answer to your question is YES. However, a lot depends on how your doctor approaches fills. Some doctors like to "creep up" on restriction, giving the patient lots of time to get used to the feeling. Others, like mine, try to go for a good level of restriction right away. Depending on which way your doctor goes, you'll either feel not much different, or VERY different. Only time will tell. But, either way, eventually you will get to a level of restriction that will indeed curb your hunger and let you lose weight. Congratulations on 15 lbs, and good luck with the fill!
  18. Tapdancin, Of course you can get back on track!! Everyday is a new day! You know what you're doing wrong! Stop it! go back to the basics, do what you need to do, do it right and keep on doin it! The weight will start dropping off again in no time! Yes, as we get further out, it becomes more of us doing the work than the sleeve, but the principles remain the same. Protein first, no snacking, 20-30-20, and exercise! Even if it is just getting 10k steps in a day! You can do this and you can finish this journey proud!! Keep on keepin on!!
  19. A friend of mine gained weight (intentionally) during her supervised diet and was denied because, in different speak, they did not believe she showed the potential to be successful with weightloss efforts.
  20. I don't have BCBS, I have First Health, but I can tell you what my insurance required. My managed weight care rule was this: Documentation that patient has failed to lose weight (approximately 10% from baseline) or has regained weight blah blah blah. It also requires a comorbidity if your BMI is under 40. Depending on your insurance (I looked at all the BCBS programs that were in the packet of insurance requirements that my surgeon gave out, but didn't see yours.), they most likely won't pay for surgery if you get below 40 and stay there, especially since you don't have a comorbidity. The majority of the BCBS programs that were in my packet required a comorbidity if you had a BMI under 40.

    Frustrated...

Hi Megan - First of all, our problem with food has nothing to do with "lack of willpower" - this is a fallacy, and something we have all used to beat ourselves up. The fact that I have been gleaning from posts about the Swedish band is that it is EXTREMELY difficult and frustrating to get a good, restrictive fill. The best example of this for me is Monica, from the SoCal group. She had the Inamed lapband, got to goal, had to have her band removed in an emergency surgery due to stomach torquing after a food poisoning incident, went bandless for 6 months to heal, and was rebanded a few months ago with the Swedish band. She is very, very frustrated, and is on fill 7, or something like that (she's lost track). This is an extremely experienced bandster, and she is a huge advocate of the band. She knows, though, that it is only a matter of time before she gets to the restriction that she needs. In the meantime, she is not beating herself up - she is doing what she can on her end, and pursuing fills in a safe yet aggressive way. Please do not blame yourself, or let yourself become discouraged. As long as your band is healthy, you WILL eventually get restriction, and those numbers will start to go down. But you WILL have to be patient, safe, and aggressive. And you WILL have to find a way to be "okay" with this process emotionally. It is never too late to get professional help with the emotional part of our eating disorders - the head is the most important part in our overall health , regardless of our weight. If we are not healthy in our "head," we will not be happy with ourselves. That's just the way it is. Hang in there! Remember, the trip is more important than the destination! Start up those positive tapes - "I am exactly where I need to be today." "Everyday that passes gets me closer to my goals." "I love myself, and I am worthy of kindness and respect." "I am doing the best that I can." "I am becoming the person I want to be."

    Frustrated...

Hi everyone. I just need to vent a little tonight. I'm frustrated with my band. I had the Swedish band placed Oct. 15th...at first I lost 14 pounds. I've gained back about 7 and I'm really sad. I understand that the Swedish band is flexible (vs. the molded rubber of the Lap-Band) so that may be the cause of my problems. You see, I have absolutely no restriction what so ever. I've eaten everything in sight, and then some. I went on a long weekend vacation to South Dakota and ate my way across the state and back. My intellect tells me to be patient and that after my fill on Nov. 22nd things will be better. But, my heart is sad and I feel like a failure and if only I had more willpower that darn macaroni and cheese and chips and candy wouldn't have jumped into my mouth. I've heard so many stories of people online being so successful even without a fill...they "made a commitment" to a healthy life...you know the stories and you may have even wrote the stories. What's wrong with me? I thought I was ready to make that commitement, but without the band's help I feel hopeless. Can someone who's been through this give me a little story or information that I can hold onto? I'm trying so hard to stay positive but man, it isn't easy. Thanks, everyone... Megan
  23. To the best of my knowlege you have to have a BMI over 40 or over 35 w/ obesity related co-morbid condition including.....diabetes, cardio disease, hbp, cardio-pulmonary....must have participated in weight loss attempts appraised by physician.....and possibly a phys evaluation. Here is the kicker for me though, mine won't cover bariatric surgery if coded morbidly obese? If anyone knows, what should it be coded?

    Surgery Date is in May!

I'm super excited as well. I figure that with all I have been through in my life, I can certainly make it through this! So I'm actually not scared at all. The only thing that scares me is the stories of people gaining all their weight back even after this!!
  25. Im 12 days post op rny and I have not lost any weight for 5 days... im hiting my protein and water goal and I exercise (focused) for at least 30 min a day (the last 2 days I've been doing an hour) the only thing that comes to mind that could be why im stuck already is that my period is about to come in and ive always gained before it starts. Anyone gone thru something similar♡♡ Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
