    Kept it Quiet?

my immediate family knew, as well as my husband (of course) and a few close friends. Otherwise, I wasn't very open about it. I'm still not super open about it, but i do tell more people about it than I used to - although at seven years out, I really don't have to. Everyone has either already seen me since I lost all that weight, or they never knew me when I was obese.

    Kept it Quiet?

It is such a personal decision! Most of my friends know, as well as my immediate family and my husband's family. Everyone has been supportive (to my face, at least) and no one has given unsolicited opinions. Lots of questions, but I don't mind that at all. My extended family doesn't know - I don't live near them, and they are the unfortunate combination of gossipy and judgmental, so I didn't feel the need to broadcast it. I'm reaching a decision point, potentially, as I will see them for Easter in a few weeks. While I am still obese, by the time I see them I'll have dropped around 100 lbs, so I can't imagine someone won't realize I'm losing weight. I need to decide what I will say when they ask. I don't feel ashamed of surgery, and I want to be a good advocate for the procedure as an option for people so educating them could be good. But, I know I will be the topic of conversation (and probably conversation on whether I will keep it off or not this time) so I need to think through how to handle it. In the end, you have to decide what will give you the best support. I have found having a good support network has been so helpful - they are happy for me and are good cheerleaders sometimes when I need it. But, if the people around you are likely to be toxic, then I would keep my mouth shut. You don't owe anyone an explanation and the potential impact of toxicity on your success is huge.
  3. Rice. This is likely the main contribution to your inability to eat alot and gain weight. Rice is notoriously filling for the majority of us, with low nutritional value. One cup is only 200 cals so if the majority of your diet is (less than) 1 cup of rice and a chicken thigh (and assuming you attempt this 3 times a day) your cals are pretty low by end of the day….resulting in further weight loss. Maybe cut down a bit on the rice and replace with with a fattier meat? Or some avocado? You can also pour a nice high-calories sauce over it all, like a pesto or herb infused olive oil, or a nice peanut satay, etc. P.S. Rice was a daily staple for me too pre-op…now i only have rice when i eat sushi.

    Kept it Quiet?

I told my hubby and son and my best friend, who I had the pleasure of meeting at infant school from school. They all knew I had struggled for years with loosing and gaining weight. I haven't told anyone else, my parents are dead and my sisters well - one would be jealous and one would try and find a psychiatric reason for my need for it. The rest of the world just doesn't bother me. I have a very pointy middle finger for them.
  5. I “eat out” (or take out) all the time…maybe 3-4 times a week (and almost always when its NOT my turn to cook, lol) I don’t actually eat much (compared to others) when i do, and sometimes i wont even eat, i’ll just drink. Im not losing any more weight, but im not gaining any either.

    Kept it Quiet?

Welcome aboard! 👋 Everyone around me knows. My family is super close, and yes they're supportive and wonderful. It's something you have to decide for yourself, because only you can predict how those around you might react. When the weight starts coming off and there's a dramatic difference, people will start to ask questions. So at some point people are probably going to find out. You just have to decide if it's better to tell them before or after. Will delaying telling them make them more upset (they might feel betrayed for you not confiding} or will seeing your weight loss prevent them from making negative comments (they won't be able to say it's just another diet to fail when they see your progress)? I have a friend that had VSG in Mexico two years ago and she only told her husband and kids, and she went alone due to Covid. When she came back, some months later she told me, or rather showed me. We finally met for coffee and I didn't recognize her. I was shocked, but in a good way. We didn't get together that year until the end of summer, due to Covid. I was the only friend she told about her surgery, since I was a weight loss patient, she knew I would understand and support her. And she still hasn't told anyone else. Sure people ask questions about why she eats such tiny amounts, and I don't think they buy her "I'm just not hungry" line now, lol. They probably suspect, but they never bring it up. Best wishes!

    Kept it Quiet?

Some people have family being totally terrible. My family has been nothing but supportive and I've actually put it on FB, and only had one negative comment from someone who failed surgery. It's your decision. People will ask you once you start losing weight what you are doing. They will comment on what you eat (or how much you eat). You don't have to tell them the truth, but you have to figure out what to say when they ask you what's up. But yeah, some people are jerks. Good luck!

    Regrets...anyone?

Yeah friends on here used to be a bigger thing years ago when there was a chat room. The entire community was closer knit than it is now. I miss the way BP used to be. I'm sorry to hear about your band troubles. They sound much like mine. The second process is coming along nicely. I started the process in February and I will be cleared for surgery after my dietitian appointment next week. Then my case goes before review, then I get an appointment with the surgeon and a tentative surgery date. It's looking like some time in May. GERD is under control at the moment due to Protonix and I've not gained any weight since band removal, I've actually lost a bit. Best wishes!

    Utter regret

Can I ask you- although this is not about the original post (my heart goes out to OP and hope they get the help they need!!) you wrote you ate every time you were in pain. But I see on your profile that you lost lots of weight. How did you get on track and lose the weight if you were eating all the time?

Stall or I am done loosing?

You could stay at the same weight for months and then drop more weight, from what I've read and heard from others. Shift work does make it really hard to lose weight, so congrats on losing as much as you have! The only thing you can do is really focus on what you're eating and drinking - keep track of your calories from food and drinks. I've heard from many people that even years out they still have restriction if they focus on lean protein.

    Regrets...anyone?

Hi don’t know if do friends thing in here , it’s been years since got on, but seems we are in the same boat. I was in an O/S assignment and got sick then the all night acid vomiting started. Because of Covid, I was stuck there until late oct ,20 . Had lap band removed last April and now IBS n all sorts of problem ensued and now my stomach does not empty. Sugar is wack, plus gaining weight fast. How is the 2nd process going.? I know the lap band took 4 months to get it finally done . Good luck!
  12. I know there has been lots of posts about stalls and here is mine. So for the last 8 weeks I have been bouncing around the same weight 71-72 kg today I even went up to 72.5 I am 8 months Post op and have lost 30% of my starting weight. Is this stall or has my body said nope not loosing any more weight? my original goal was 70kg but I still have quiet a bit of fat on my tummy so I would like to get that off and reset my goal to 60kg . I am a shift worker and don't get great sleep and I have found in the past this makes it very hard to loose weight. now I sound like I am making excuses again like I did pre surgery but prior to surgery when I took several weeks leave I always dropped a couple of kilos just from having a better sleep pattern but it went straight back on once I returned to work. but to the topic what do you all think and what are your experiences at this point in your journey?

    Pre Op high protein diet

My dietician put me on a 1,300 calorie diet with 45% carbs, 30% protein and 25% fat. I only had to lose 5 pounds to get a surgery date. Honestly, I ate what I wanted as an evening snack every other night. My healthy snacks were Greek yogurt with fruit, low fat cookies with green tea, or one piece of string cheese with almonds (counted out). I wasn’t ready to sacrifice ALL of my favorite foods. I viewed the diet as a sort of “practice” for eating healthy, tracking my food and drinking more water. You will give up everything and lose a significant amount of weight when you do the two week liquid diet before surgery (which I am doing right now). Maybe you should ask your dietician if you’re supposed to follow the diet 24/7.
  14. Hi all! I still do not know which surgery I am getting as of yet, as my first dietician appt was last week. She has me on a protein first diet... about 1500 calories a day etc to start getting used to the way I will be eating post surgery. No date yet for surgery,. btw. Assuming June or July. How many of you had to do this and what did you find eating works good for you? Ive been watching a lot of Youtube videos on what they ate before and after. Im doing a lot of mushy high protein foods already. Refried beans with sour cream, soups, tons of eggs, etc. But for snacking I was told to always eat protein first!! Im only a week in and I have not had 1 sweet yet! The most sugar I had, was a thing of cottage cheese last night with a teeny bit of strawberry topping and an apple with cinnamon sugar. That is it. I crave sweets so much. This is so hard. What worked for you guys in the sweets department pre op?? Did you still lose before your surgery?? I dont NEED to lose before surgery. ,but they dont want me to gain either. My dietician told me eat sweets in moderation, and obviously I know that... but if its eat protein first, where do I fit in a slice of cake once in awhile?? LOL Can any of you give me some good food/snack ideas/ plans that worked for you pre op?? As Im writing this, my snack tonight is a cup of vegetable beef soup that is high in protein.... Is that bad?? lol Pinterest has been a help too.

I went through exactly the same thing so I know first hand how you are feeling. First of all reach out to someone who can help you with the suicidal thoughts get some counselling asap. Gosh I was that bad I was bawling to my mother that I now wanted a stomach transplant 😳. I felt awful I wanted to die I spent 6 weeks curled up in a ball on my sisters couch. I did the old but I wasn't that big blah blah blah. What you are going through is grief and you will go through all the stages some more than once. When I started loosing weight I would tell people I would gladly have the weight back just to feel normal again. I totally get how you feel. Hormones have a lot to do with this I was perimenopausal and ended up on patches as I said to my Dr I can't deal with both meaning the effects of surgery and menopause, so that helped alot. It gets better trust me on this. I cried multiple times a day for weeks, I didn't go to work thank God I had plenty of leave saved up but going back home and back to work helped me get back into my routine and gave me something else to to think about. On your path to recovery the good days will slowly out number the bad days. I couldn't talk about surgery without crying for months. I would tell people it should be outlawed all sorts of crazy stuff. So now I am 8 months post op and feel so much better. I am 35 kilos down and have come to the realisation that I wouldn't have lost the weight without the surgery, yes I went through a stage of if only a stuck to the pre op changes I made I wouldn't have had to have surgery... But I can't say this enough and you are probably thinking yeah right what do you know it's worse for me but I do know and it will get better just be gentle on yourself try to do things you enjoy spend time with supportive people who will look after you when you need it. You are not alone it gets better, how long will it take you I don't know it took me 6 months and I think when I realised I could eat and drink "normally" again I got better quicker. Now I am fighting another battle but that's a story for another day. Love your restriction while you have it. Get your protein in stay hydrated. If you want to message me privately please do as it helps to talk to someone who has been where you are. It gets better ❤
  16. I used the each of the following items every single day during weight loss phase (some things multiple times a day): Food Scale & measuring cup Body Scale Some sort of food tracking app (i used My Fitness Pal Premium) Insulated water bottle something to keep u regular (i used Benefibre) A Timer (used the one on my watch)
  17. The weight loss for revision varies a lot, but in general is significantly less than with your initial surgery. If you're doing it for GERD, it makes sense, but for weight loss, it makes more sense to look at other weight loss strategies like medications and counting calories/behavior change
  18. You shouldn't even be looking at the scale at this point. Just follow the program, stick to the program, heal, recover, and take care of yourself. The weight loss will happen on its own. Quit watching it.

What was your "this is it" moment

My turning point was when we went on our usual walk with the dogs in November 2021. I was struggling and out of breath on a small incline and had to stop. My ankles and hips were throbbing. I started crying and my husband was all worried like I was gonna pass out. I said “I’m just having a melt down right now because of what I’ve done to my body. I need to cry it out.” I cried the whole way home. I started Googling weight loss surgery in December. I was surprised that I actually qualified because when I looked into it 5 years ago, my BMI was too low. So I figured this was a sign that it was meant to be.
  20. Almost 8 yrs VSG and had severe GERD beforehand. It significantly decreased post op but I've remained on PPI medication the entire time. I was down to 1-2 total doses per week, however I had some regain over the last year and am up to THREE TIMES daily!! It's everything to do with how I carry my weight- all in my middle. While I was quite satisfied with the GERD being almost totally resolved initially, I'm fearful that even IF I lose the current regain it won't go away to the extend that it was in the past. I have been told by my bariatric team that a revision is likely the ONLY way to get the GERD to go away with 100% certainty. That sounds pretty good to me but I am quite fearful of surgery in general because I'm a nurse practitioner and we make terrible patients... I would love to know what the loss pattern was like for those who had the revision and can I plan to see awesome results? I mean, BESIDES the GERD clearing up? I am currently about 40 lbs about my ULTIMATE goal- I never reached that goal with my VSG, stopping about 12 lbs away from it...
  21. Random inflammation every now and then on the middle right side of my stomach. It’s a year since I did the surgery and am consistently losing weight but I always get inflamed randomly. Is there something I should be doing differently to help with the inflammation. I don’t eat much but it’s concerning since it always happens and lasts a couple of hours then goes down. Usually when I wake up and sometimes at night. It feels bruised when I press down on it lightly.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

It’s weird. I’m hitting all these milestones now back to back to back. 2kg ago I officially left the “obesity” category of the bmi. Now I’m “just slightly overweight”. I’m 1kg away from being in Onderland, which is insane! 🥰 Then another kg and I’m in the 80 digit (89). Granted I’m cheating by combining metric and imperial weight system’s milestones 🙃 but for the longest time it felt like I was losing weight and losing weight and losing weight and “nothing changed”. I was still viewed as and considered morbidly obese, I felt it too and the clothes I wore were baggy but still okay. Now all of a sudden it’s going super fast and in 12kg I’ll be at the weight I havent been at since 6 years ago. At the beginning of this it felt so insanely daunting (145lb weight loss) and when my surgeon said he thinks I’ll get to somewhere in the 80s I thought he was crazy! I really thought I had “failed” surgery because there were so many stalls and I can eat quite a bit of food. Now I’m just really happy and excited about where this will continue to go, even if it slows down. I will now officially join a gym and get my butt moving again for the first time in 5 years! Kinda nervous. Kinda excited 😊 Sorry for the long post it’s just been on my mind!

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Yes.. 3 weeks sounds crazy to me too.. but if I dont do it.. no surgery.. its standard here in Canada.. most do Optifast.. my only concern is how its going to taste!.. lol.. not worried about the surgery.. I'm so ready for it!.. my weight has been up and down my whole life.. I can't seem to stay down.. so I need this.. my body needs this.. everything is starting to ache.. I also need a knee replacement too.. need to just stay positive..think of all the great things that comes from this.. for me its feeling better, live longer, do more things with my kids, not be the fattest one in the room, not worry about seating, and being able to buy clothing everywhere! I am a stay at home mom.. no need to worry about work.. I also don't drink coffee.. lol.. in fact, Canadas program starts by ween everyone off caffeine before surgery so it's not a problem after surgery.. need to be 2 months clean.. chocolate WAS my biggest hurdle.. but I'm ok now.. i think... lolol

    Vyvanse after surgery

VSG typically does not cause malabsorption because the pyloric valve is left intact and not bypassed (such as with RNY/MGB/DS). So it generally does not interfere with meds. That being said, you should absolutely check with your prescribing doctor and your surgeon to be sure. Additionally, as you lose weight, you may need to have your dose adjusted. Hope that helps!
  25. I actually eat whatever I can and drink whatever I can just to get my caloric target. So I have no guilt surrounding drinking a really sweet Starbucks drink loaded with whipped cream. But even all those sugary foods and junk food and also protein and carbs, my weight is still going down that I dont even want to exercise because my muscle mass is so low now I'm scared Tell me it gets better and I can eat better later on. I really want to put on weight now and go back to the gym and tone my body.
