    Not obese enough???

Plus most insurances clearly state that the weight that "qualifies" you for surgery is your initial weight. So you are correct they cannot mandate that you lose 10% of your body weight and then deny you for being a few pounds shy of being "officially" obese. Good luck and I am sure things will go your way

    Insurance Approval!

Awesome. I have Anthem BC/BS and they didn't take much time to approve me as well. I had surgery on 9/10. Please just make sure that this is definitely what you want to do. It's tough.

    2 weeks post op!

I am 2 weeks post op today and feeling great! No more gas pain. Just a little tenderness near the biggest incision. But I can already sleep on my stomach which is amazing. Sleeping was hard before, most of first week, since I'm a stomach sleeper. I was waking up every 2-3 hours. But thankfully it's improved now. Been exercising everyday at least 15 min up to 45 min walking or going to the gym on the stationary bike. I'm down 19 lbs since the pre op diet and have a goal of 65-70 more to go. Been tracking food, drinks and exercising on myfitnesspal. It keeps me honest. On soft foods now starting today although I've been slowly adding day by day since I've been hungry. I'm scheduled to get my first fill week after next. I'm a little nervous to travel next week on a 4 hour flight. Sitting for a long period of time is uncomfortable. I've been working at home since 4 days after surgery so it's been easy to just lie down whenever needed. So any suggestions anyone has would be appreciated about flying and sitting for so long.

    Coffee Post Op

I was told decaf, but no limit. My nutritionist said if you are very good about staying hydrated, then one cup of coffee with caffeine is no problem. I am only 10 days post op so I haven't tried yet. Maybe in a couple of months.

    Passing My Tests...

First, I did like you attend a seminar. Next I made an appointment with the surgeon. After that initial meeting, he said I was a canidate. Yeah!!. Next thing is 6 months (continuously, with no breaks) of medically supervised diet. That meant I had to see my doctor every month for 6 months and tell him I was on a diet and exercising. They document your weight and that's it. Then after I needed a Psychological Evaluation. After that I needed to see a Dietician/Nutritionist. Then I was complete. Next step was to tell my surgeon I completed the 6 months. My insurance requested 5years of medical history with weight documentation and list co-morbidities. Once my surgeon received all that which took about a month, they submit to my insurance and it took 5 days for the first denial then 2 days after my appeal I was APPROVED!!!. I have been on Optifast since 2/19. Preop testing took avout an hour, which included bloodwork, EKG, & Chest Xray. I see the surgeon on 3/3 for my preop visit and on TUESDAY< MY LIFE WILL BE BETTER. All in all it took almost 1 year. Only because I had a break of the 6mons of visits, which I didn't know I did until I completed the first 6 visits and they advised me that on month 5 the doctor didn't write that I was there for weight management. SOOOOOO, I had to start my 6 months all over again....it was a bummer, but look at me now. Hope this helps you. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR JOURNEY!!!!

    No Energy

Hi I did have the same issue around week 2 to 5. Best to talk to nutritionist or doctor like I did. They both told me to have a glass of skim or low fat milk before bed and eat chewable vitamins like the Finstone kind. I was also tried and had no energy. They said Up the protein at each meal 10 grams more if I need too. So far So good!!! I just takes me longer t eat it all. I am excersing at least once a day and it has helped me. I am now at the end of my seventh week post op. I feel great and have had no problems. Best wishes to you. imaluckydog

    Change of "Appetite"

I was banded on Oct 10, 08 since then I have lost 87 lbs. Since I started on this journey I have tried to not eat emotionally. When I get hungry, I ask myself "Are you really hungry or is something else going on?" Since I started this process another "appetite" has developed... for sex. Is this normal?

    questions

Hi! I was drinking anywhere from 10-12 diet cokes a day and went cold turkey about 6 weeks before my surgery. I sometimes miss it - you know, the snap of the pop top and the small hiss of the carbonation. Every once in a while I'll sneak a sip of one of my kid's or husband's but that's about it. One day I even thought - how did I drink so much of this? It tastes like crap! As far as the band, you do have to work at it. I haven't been and I'm totally kicking myself in the butt as I come close to my 1 year bandiversary at the end of March. I've spent the last 3 months working 12 hours a day and then partying almost every night. However, after my last fill last week, I changed my thinking and I've started working with it again. In fact since last Thursday I've lost 6 pounds and working out at least every other day now while drowning myself in water! I know it's a little harder with the large band to feel restriction and I think I've finally found what I was looking for. Good luck and keep in touch! Laura
  13. Thank you guys!! you saved my day! Well, I am suppose to be on pureed/soft foods until day 10 which is Monday, but maybe it’s me being a smart ass, but isn’t every food soft when you chew it to death? Of course, I don’t eat an entire serving, I am eating a quarter of what I used to, but still I am so freaked out that I can do this, and to be honest a little discouraged. This happened at almost noon, and its 5 pm and I am still very full (which is very unusual for me). So that is very cool, and I do have a little discomfort, I don’t like to feel this full… Btw, I forgot to ask, why is that you can’t drink before ,during and after eating? I know they say it will “wash” food down, but I am just so thirsty after eating. What happens if I do? I still cant tell if that really washes things down, since everything I am feeling is new.

    pre-op diet... all liquids?

My surgery is on sunday. The diet says cheese, yoghurts chicken fish and no fruit at all. Needless to say i havent stuck to it but have been having 4 shakes/soups a day from a previous diet i bought-(like slim fast) with a few little treats. Ive lost over 10 pounds in nearly 2 weeks so im hoping thats ok. My surgery is at 5pm and i only have to completely fast for 6 hours before no other instructions. Dalite xxx

    Hair Loss

Protein, you need more protein! Add a protein shake to your day it just might put you up there. You need your weight times .3 to get the daily protein required and I go the extra mile and try and go 5-10 grams over that. And don't forget you do need some fat in your diet. We tend to cut way back on fat, but there are healthy fats and it keeps your skin and hair healthier. Also lots of Omega 3's, fish and eggs are a good source, they are very good for your hair. My old nursing days coming back! LOL Good luck!
  16. I had surgery this last Tuesday and have been really sick ever since. I had the normal soreness but that has left for the most part. However, ever since the surgery I have been extremely nauseated. I haven't been throwing up but I have been right up to it. I have to force myself to eat because I know I have too otherwise I would never eat I feel so bad (liquids only of course). Is this pretty much normal considering the surgery or do I need to be worried? On the good news I've lost 30 lbs just from the pre-op diet and another 10 this week! What a way to jump start my new life!
  17. I'm only taking 10 days off, and I'm a stylist too. Gonna just try half days.
  18. I took two weeks off but went back on day 10 as there was a meeting I did not want to miss and I felt fine. I was also going a bit stir crazy at home. On day 14, the day I was due back to work, I had to fly out of town for meetings and was absolutely fine. I was open with my boss and my personal assistant who was able to structure commitments to allow for flexibility, including finishing early most days to allow for post general anaesthetic tiredness. But mostly, I was fine. The first few catered meetings were odd, but, as with most social events, I soon learnt how to navigate around these without drawing attention to myself or doing something silly.

Had mine 4 years, no issues. Told this would be good for life. Know people who've had theirs over 10 years w/ no replacements.

    Cancer Weight Gain

First of all, you still look great--I can't see much of a difference between April 2018 and December 2019. However, the more important issue is your health. I'm sure that cancer had a huge physical and emotional impact on you, and right now you should focus on your recovery from cancer more than on your weight issues. (I say this as a cancer survivor myself.) You can deal with your weight once you are clearly on the other side of the cancer. Please don't beat yourself up about your relatively small weight gain. You have been through a lot!
  21. Hey everyone! I'm looking for advice and encouragement. I had my weight loss surgery in December 2016, so I'm 3.5 years out now. I dropped around 160 pounds, from my biggest being 360 and my smallest being 187. I was so blessed to lose so much in about 14 months. Maintenance was relatively easy at first. I purposefully gained 15 pounds because being 6'2 with a large build, 187 started getting me questions about being sick. 200-205 is my personal goal and sweet spot, where I feel the best and think I look the best. Fast forward to September 2019. I was having my first endoscopy since my surgery, as a follows up to Barrett's esophagus that was found when I had my bypass. What I thought would be routine, turned worst case scenario when I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Apparently I'm in that 2% that has Barrett's that actually progresses to cancer. Luckily we caught it very early stage and I have been able to have ablation therapy treatment versus the typical chemo and radiation. I've developed recurrent esophageal stricture due to scar tissue from ablation therapy, causing me to choke frequently. Needless to say, it's all been very scary, and my eating got out of whack for a while. I've quickly gained weight and I'm at 220.2 today. I need to lose 20 pounds ASAP. The current COVID-19 situation and working from home, having access to food 24/7 coupled with stress eating is proving difficult to overcome. I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has words of encouragement or advice to help me get back on track quickly. 3.5 years and I was very proud to be maintaining at my goal weight of around 200, and now I'm scared the scale will continue to creep up on me.

Try #2 for 8 Months Out Stats

Hey you guys...Just checking in on my 8 month bandiversary? Down 60 lbs as of a couple of days ago. I had to have another unfill today. This time they took out everything. I was having heartburn and reflux at night and was miserable. I can go back next week to put most back in or just wait until I'm feeling better. I still love my band, even if it is a little fickle sometimes. I have been at my sweet spot since last month at this time and then all of a sudden...WHAMMMMM. Too tight. There's no rhyme nor reason for it. I started in a size tight 18 and now is a loose 12. 10's here I come. I've lost 60% of my excess weight in 8 months and I'm not one bit worried about gaining anything back. This is the first time I've given away my FAT clothes. I truly feel at peace with my weight, body etc. I'd still like to get another 25lbs off. I'm only 5'2". I'm in no rush. Would love to be a size 8 when all is said and done. The nut at the doc's office doesn't think I'll lose more than 10 more lbs. :w00t: (I'll show her) Anyway...I don't post a lot but I do lurk to see what everybody's up to.
  23. I am very happy and excited today! 6 days out of surgery and I have already lost 10 lbs!!! Yup im kinda hype! lol sw: 403 Day of surgery: 382 6 days post op: 372

    I am so hungry!!

Are you not allowed any protein at all? When I was in the hospital they gave me pudding to eat. I came home and for 10 days post surgery I was allowed protein shakes, puddings, jello, popsicles and crystal lite. Then after the 10 days and a trip to the dr.s for post op check I was on a mushy diet. Only allowed 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of mushy food at a meal, but it was awesome to chew again. I would call your dr. and tell him what you are feeling....see if you are allowed some protein drink to gain your strength back. As for the sticky stuff on the tummy, try some oil, that worked for me. I used olive oil....I smelled great! Good luck, and hope you feel better soon. :biggrin2:
  25. Gosh, if I recall comrrectly it was the group of women I work with. They have been very encouraging on my journey. I'm 14 months out and at goal (actually a little past goal) and even still, people still comment. I work in a governement facility of about 1400 employees so it can be months before I run into someone again, but just yesterday an employee walked by me and said "damn, you look hot-and 10 years younger!" .....it was all I needed to get thru the day! :bored:
