    17 Years Too Long

Oh yeah. I can smell -everything-. I cried the other day because I was enjoying a yogurt, my first food in two days, and my son sidled up to me with a poopy diaper and put me off my food. I was so sad because I -wanted- that yogurt and couldn't eat it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. I am 9 weeks post op. I gave up protein shakes after 4 weeks when I was allowed to, I'm not a huge milk drinker. I get all of my protein with food. Typically I have 2 eggs for breakfast with turkey sausage. If I don't have that then it's 3/4 of non-fat greek yogurt with 1/4 cup of nuts and 1/4 of berries. Tuna with salad for lunch and some sort of protein with a vegetable for dinner. I'll have 1/4-1/2 cup of fruit after lunch. I'm not a big snacker but I'm fortunate that I can 4 ounces of protein typically so I don't need to snack. I usually come in at 650-750 a day.

    Low carb

I don't even pay attention to carbs. Yea it's not popular but I've lost over 100 pounds. I adapting a more Mediterranean diet. My grandparents came from Italy. Ate pasta almost daily with their olive oil. Lived into their early 90's. Had no idea what a carb was. Italians have one of the highest life expectancies in the world and are one of the heart healthiest people in the world and yet they eat the pasta with the dreaded carbs. It reminds me of the anti egg craze when I was a kid. My family was told by doctors we would all have heart attacks if we ate eggs. Egg beaters were spawned by this anti egg craze. Now eggs are considered a super food. My downfall was always having too large of portions and eating a lot of food that was fried. I know I will get scolded, but I eat a Lean Pocket for lunch. Little high on calories but on pocket has 13 grams of protein which is almost about the same as the greek yogurt I was choking down. It's quick, has good amount of protein, and tastes good.
  6. Hi everyone. I am 11 days post op and starting to eat things other than liquids (yogurt, cottage cheese) I've seen many people post about their stomachs making crazy noises and rumbling. Does anyone know WHY this happens? I am trying to figure out what my stomach is telling me. I know it's not "I'm full" because it happens after 1 tiny bite of something. Could it just mean "hey im processing"? Any insight? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  8. I've been able to drink pretty decently since surgery. I can't gorge Water like I used to in one sitting, but I have no problem gulping a reasonable amount, waiting a couple minutes and gulping again. My Fluid goals are increased (128oz ideally) because of another procedure. I'm still working on it but there's no restrictive reason I can't achieve it, I just need to think about drinking throughout the day. When I eat, drinking can make me feel bloated if I drink too soon but it also eases a few minutes later which is probably a sign that it's flushing food out of my pouch which is not a good thing because at week 5, I'm noticing minor hunger...so I might be fueling a fire by drinking too close with meals (although I don't particularly have meals, I just have Protein sources right now like cheese, deli meats, yogurt, salami, stuff like that).

Do You Spend More Time Cooking?

I definitely meal-plan, shop and cook more than I did pre-op. (I've lost all my excess weight and maintained my weight loss for over 15 months.) Breakfast is high Protein / high Fiber. lunch is something easy, e.g., dinner leftovers, a high-protein/high-veggie salad or sandwich, etc. Planned Snacks (not grazing!) are fruit, cheese. We do a sit-down dinner every night -- either home-cooked or healthy takeout. We eat in restaurants 4-5 times a month. I'm such a fan of My Fitness Pal. Using it for the last 2+ years, I've learned so much about the basic nutrients of specific foods. I now eat more fibrous veggies and fruits; yesterday I had carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, spaghetti squash, and blueberries. Yesterday's protein came from a Protein Drink, Greek yogurt, skim milk, cheese, roast beef, chicken. Whole grains were high-protein/high-fiber bread (2 slices), all-bran Cereal. I have treats daily. Yesterday's were 1 salted caramel biscotti, 1.5 ounces of scotch, and 1.4 ounces of dark chocolate. It's all so delicious and satisfying. I couldn't be happier about how I'm eating.

    Protein help

I was drinking isopure but it was making me sick then my NUT told me to dilute it with water.... Much better ! Also okios Greek yogurt triple zero has a lot of protein- lived on the Vanella - still do. Another tip is Iso 100 protein powder - very high protein low sugar and carbs mixed with 25 calorie almond milk...delish I get it at the vitamin shop.

    Best Protein Powder Post Op

I use unflavored Syntrax. It dissolves easy, does not have a strong odor, and was not very expensive. I use it in my coffee, mashed potatoes, soup, and sprinkled in yogurt.

Do You Spend More Time Cooking?

Yes and no. On days when it is cool enough I do enjoy planning out meals and cooking them myself. On days when it is just way too hot to turn the stove on (like today!) I will go to the grocery store and buy a rotisserie chicken, and live off cheese and yogurt. I have a ton of recipes pinned to try, and my family so far has loved everything that I have prepared which is a bonus! I can't wait for fall and the cooler temps to arrive. I'll be busting out the crock pot for all kinds of delicious family friendly and bariatric friendly meals.

    Purée foods

I had a few favorites: - turkey or chicken chili from Trader Joe's pureed. - refried Beans pureed with cottage cheese and a tiny bit of hotsauce or taco sauce - for my sweet go-to, pumpkin pureed with cottage cheese or greek yogurt and apple pie/pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon. That one felt like I was eating something naughty but was actually super good for me! - canned white meat chicken pureed with a bit of mozz cheese and broth or creamed Soup and spices like cumin, garlic, and curry.
  14. Your diet is a lot more structured after WLS. Especially near the beginning, there are certain foods that you can eat, and a lot of foods that you can’t eat. It’s important to hit your calorie and Protein goals, while doing your best to get in tons of other nutrients, too. Now that you need to be careful about every bite you take, do you make a lot more of your food yourself rather than depending on prepared foods from restaurants and convenience stores? Do you spend a lot more time in the kitchen than you used to? Have you become a better cook? Or have you gone the opposite way – keeping foods simple and easy, possibly depending on easy choices like yogurt, cheese, and fruit? How, if at all, have your cooking and food prep habits changed since WLS?
  15. Same thing happened to me. Just smelling it would make me sick. I lived on shakes and Greek yogurt before and after my surgery. I would buy my ready made chicken Soup from Tim Hortons and then put it through a strainer and then add lots and lots of Water to it. It would last me 2 days. 2 months later, I make vegetable soup for myself at home and it tastes amazing. I get to choose which vegetables I want to put in it and I can control the fat or salt portions in it. I also bought some healthy canned Campbell Soups from Safeway but then added lots of water in it before eating it so I could have something different but not too salty or fattening. I can and I will.

    Postop questions?

I found the easiest way to get close to goals was to be sipping something every few moments while you are awake. For week 1 Protein was not important only fluids. Week 2 we added full liquids including Protein shakes, cream strained Soups, Greek yogurt and even cream of wheat. Week 2 was when I started feeling somewhat normal again but was not even close to hitting Water and protein goals. Even though you don't feel like it you need to keep on sipping or you will get dehydrated, dizzy and nauseated which are signs of dehydration. Some people have ended up back at the hospital because they just did not feel like sipping. Best of luck to you and congratulations!

    1400 calorie diet

You will get through it... We had to loose 10% of our weight before the insurance company would authorize payment. It was a sign of good faith and intention. Surgery is a tool not a cure all like I it went in thinking (like lipo or something like that) lol. I learned processed foods have no business in my house, let along in my body or kids. Also, I am a pretty awesome cook. Something I forgot after having a bunch of babies and letting my husband start cooking lol. Now I didn't give up food just food with no real purpose. You need to get ready to take in at least 60g+ of protein a day in a tiny tummy. I did have random cheat days but knew what the goal was. Oh and cheat day i mean BBQ =extra proteins lol. An example of my dinner before would be baked chicken breast Cup of broccoli with a bit of Italian dressing in it (kids live it) and only a couple spoonfuls of Rice o Roni (carb are bad). I gave up soda pop a while ago and I'm glad I did. I can only imagine what pain I'd be in if I drank it today. Breakfast heck I ate bacon and eggs (egg whites are less calories) and bacon but only 2-3strips not half the lbs like before. Yogurt and Greek yogurt were good for snack for lunch I had a bunch of light Progresso Soups and salad or sandwiches. Keep in mind some of the store bought salads can have as many calories as Burger so watch the calorie content. You're better off making it yourself and can probably do it better and dress it up by throwing your own grilled chicken or steak from the night before....I'd Google some 1400cal diet recipes and go from there. You got this
  19. Two days ago I started pureed/soft foods. I've had scrambled eggs, deli turkey, yogurt, Ricotta Bake (from http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com ), and pear. Tomorrow I'm thinking about refried Beans and guacamole. Obviously the amount of food is very small but it's better than just liquid and gives me hope for the future!

    Are you missing the crunch?

I add granola to my greek yogurt there is a Protein one.... by nature made... and I get some decent crunch from nuts... pistachio's peanuts and all protein rich... and good fat rich... and I get some crunch... have yet to look at fat.... for weigh loss... so I jsut ewat what I can as healthy as I can.... sometimes a crunchy pickle helps ease the need for crunch and have no real cals... no fat etc...

    Smell and taste after surgery

Me too. Use to hate Greek yogurt but now it is yummy. I'm still on full fluids so that's as far as I can go for now but the puréed stage should prove interesting. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  24. I work overnights as well. I try to eat normally during the day...Breakfast when I get home which is usually a protien shake or yogurt. I then go to sleep by 8a till 1p. Have lunch. Go to the gym. Have my dinner around 6p. Go back to bed from 6p to 8p. Then head off to work. For the overnite shift I bring a youguart or protien bar to eat at 11p and a protien shake to drink at 330a. That's basically how I handle the overnite shift.
