MEASURABLE Non-weight successes!
labwalker replied to CherieRyde's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took all of my 6X and 5X clothing (good condition, some unworn) to a store run by a local group for challenged individuals. Getting rid of those clothes was like getting a new life. Just the other day I noticed I could fit into some 3X pants that I had bought many years ago--but could never wear! Wow!! What a good feeling. I'm hoping in a few months the 4X pants and 3X shirts will be another "donation" to a good cause! I was tired of having a closet full of clothes that only fit at the extremes of my previous failed weight loss efforts... so far the band is working; I may not always lose, but I never gain. It will be nice to be able to get down to one final size, and closet full of new clothes that fit without being tight or too loose. Another victory was being able to go on a 16 day vacation (part cruise) and being able to sample all of the great food, and coming home with only a pound gain, which was gone in four days after getting back into the gym routine! -

6 mos after surgery - feel like my stomach grew
Daftgirl posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know i know, they all said its not possible to do that, but I feel like maybe I did. July 21 will be 6 months from my surgery and coincidentally, my birthday! - Maybe when I went from working out at night to working out in the morning before work (up around 330/4am, workout 415-515am, home by 6am), my system went out of whack? its like after work and after a sensible protein packed dinner of mainly chicken breast or something prepared healthily, i still feel like I can eat and eat and eat. I have a protein shake with spinach for breakfast, my millions vitamins, water, decaf coffee, then a great lunch of half cup of chicken breast or a protein shake with more spinach and then dinner at home. I try to stay on my water and an 11am and 3pm snack of string cheese or peanut butter or a hardboiled egg white. Has anyone else felt like they could just keep eating? The last couple nights I ate a half container of reduced fat jif! I never even ate pb before surgery. Maybe im craving sweets? Is that im not drinking enough water? I add sugar free packets to flavor my water b/c i dont like mio’s aftertaste and dont always want a sweet powerade zero. I was having greek yogurts but stopped because i was getting burned out on dairy. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way about their pouch. Maybe its all in my head! Im 25 lbs from my goal weight! -
So, I use myfitnesspal.com and you can set that up pretty easily, but it does sometimes feel overwhelming because they have such a huge database so when you look up "boneless skinless chicken thigh" there might be 30 options. They're all about the same, just different brands, but if it's a single ingredient, the differences are so small it doesn't really matter. Just enter in the ingredient by weight in grams or ounces, or if it's like a banana or a cucumber, it might say "1 medium banana" or "1 8 inch cucumber". You can also enter that you eight 1/2 or .25 of the banana or cucumber. If you have a brand name ingredient, like you bought " Dannon light and fit greek yogurt" you can just type that in and up it comes! And it usually doesn't matter what flavor you chose, because almost always all the flavors have the same nutrition. However if you actually got Chobani greek yogurt, that might have twice as many calories/carbs because that's sweetened with sugar instead of artificial sugar. Hope that helps!

Regret, full feeling, satisfaction
ShelbyMoore replied to Propo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have not had surgery yet but in the process of losing weight pre-surgery. It's all in the mindset. I used to "live to eat" but now I only "eat to live". "Live to eat" means I couldn't wait until the next meal, or next snack. I've been working on switching my thoughts to not making food the big ritual it was. It's now like putting gas in my car. My body needs nutrition and I give it that but my focus now is on other parts of my life. I hope that's helpful. -
Regret, full feeling, satisfaction
Joann454 replied to Propo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am a grazer so I never ate huge portions. I actually envy non grazers because it's more dangerous (weight gain wise). I wish I ate big meals although now that I'm reading this it's clear we all have a cross to bear. My NUT told me that nearly everyone has a moment of regret but she also said in nearly everyone it passes and they move to elation. I hope that's what happens for you. 9 days till surgery for me. I'm having all kinds of nerves. -
I know this isn't "pregnancy related" but I'm hoping some of you can help me. I can't seem to eat enough calories. I started feeling super sick and had a huge headache, which I'm still feeling, that landed me in the ER the other night. Turns out I'm not eating enough. I had the lapband surgery in Feb 2008. I got my band loosened right after getting pregnant and can't get enough in in order to have enough calories to spend on breastfeeding. My husband and I talked about going and getting the band loosened, but it means I wouldn't lose weight. I just don't know, I'm torn. What's healthier for my LO? Being breastfed or not having a 300 pound mama with high blood pressure? I feel like the worst mother in the world. I've been practically crying non stop. It never occured to me I would even consider not breastfeeding. Every time I give LO formula to supplement (as the Dr recommended in the hospital) instead of my pumped milk, I feel as though I'm giving him poison.

I have had that surgery. Don't beat yourself up. Get as much bed rest as possible walk when ur up to it. Ur body needs rest to heal. That's major. Ur not going to get out of control with weight. If others are cooking for u put ur food order in. Get ur protein as much as possible an b careful of the sugar. My nut says no more then 10 grms per serving so u can still have sugar just b careful. Balanced diet. It took me along time to recover from that. U will b emotional. I was 32 when I had mine. Don't worry about weight right now. Focus on healing. Sounds like u have already conquered the weight! ! Congrats an b proud of that. I got to where the numbers on scales started to affect how I judged myself ..pat on my back or I really beat myself up. I am 7 wks post sleeve. .I'm feeling pretty awesome of my accomplishments right now..Hang in there. Get well....

My surgeon didn't say exactly how much weight I had to lose in the six-month supervised diet stage, but encouraged me to lose as much as I can to help me get to goal more quickly. How much did you lose during that stage? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Worried about ulcer
1SuperBonBon replied to Rena's got this's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gluten-Free Sucks! It was really hard for about 2-3 months. I was pretty resentful and hungry all the time. Everytime I saw a food commercial I would think, there is something I will never have again. But after awhile I just got used to it. I feel that going gluten-fee has prepared me for my sleeve journey. I am so used to eating the same stuff all the time. I went what I call naturally gluten-fee. I don't eat any of the gluten-free substitues like bread, Pasta, Cookies etc. To tell you the truth, I was really surprised that I didn't lose more weight going gluten-free; hence turning to the sleeve for a little more help. I am so ready to do this. I dont think a year ago I could have done it.. I hope everything works out for you. Let me know what you find out. I am really curious what is going on with you. Bonnie -
I arrived at the hospital on Thursday for my sleeve surgery and they filled me full of liquids while I was awaiting the surgery and then afterwards. They were freaking out because my body wasn't eliminating the fluids the way they wanted it to. They sent me a plate full of liquid diet food and none of it was tasty enough to eat. I guess that's how you lose weight, nothing tastes any good. I guess this is what I wanted.

I feel ya! And my misery loves your company. :-) Sleeved on 10/17. Down 28 pounds. It's been a slow go for me. I've already hit two serious stalls and a couple mini stalls. It is frustrating, but I am keeping the faith that it is working and will continue to work. I will admit, I do compare my weight loss with others and it leads to no good. I've always been a slow loser and it looks like I will continue to be a slow loser. Hang in there! And I will be a hanging in there with you.

Lifting weight/working out
Diana_in_Philly replied to elinator_34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has your medical team cleared you to lift more than 10 pounds? (That was my initial restriction after surgery.) I was cleared to lift as tolerated at my 2 week post op visit. Start slow and go with lower weights than you were lifting pre-surgery to give your body some time to adjust. -
Lifting weight/working out
GradyCat replied to elinator_34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was doing cardio in the gym 2 weeks post-surgery, but my doctor said to wait 6 weeks before doing any lifting greater than 10 pounds and to be careful and increase weight gradually. -
I'm in the same situation. It will be 2 years next week and have lost 104 pounds in total but now have gained 12 pounds back. I'm so disappointed with myself, I'm afraid that I've stretched out the sleeve and have done this for nothing. I know I need to get back to basics but really struggling to get there. So thank you for reminding me that I'm not alone we are all on this journey together and I know you can find your way back and get to your goal.

I'm 2+ years out. From April to June, I had managed to put on 5 pounds by slacking off a little on my exercise and letting too much sugar sneak back in. I've since done intermittent fasting, focused more on building muscle and high intensity interval training, and upped my Protein to 90 grams a day. It took me a couple of months, but I've managed to take off the 5. I've also lost inches. I was eating 1000 calories a day in weight loss mode, and mostly just a protein prepared the way I like and a green veggie for lunch and dinner. I did start Protein shakes again in the morning to help get my 90 grams in. Lots of Water or very low/no calorie beverages! A few days a week, I would stop eating at 8:00 PM and not eat again until noon the next day, and then eat only 500 calories the rest of the day (mostly just shakes). Those were the 'fast' days. Although hard at first, it seemed to really help get my metabolism going again. I also felt better restriction with my sleeve afterwords. Lots of information online about it if interested. It's called 16:8 Intermittent fasting. Good luck! You'll get back on track!

well, I'd prefer to think that you had a rest from the rigmarole of it all and now you're ready to hit it again! and think of it this way - you're 2 years out and have not gained back your weight! now you're ready to tackle that last bit. you are a success, not a failure! so - go back to eating lean Protein, planning and measuring meals, veg, real fruit. whole foods. and if the gym isn't an option make sure you're getting your 10000 steps per day and maybe add in some strength training or yoga at home. if the gym is a right now option then get planning it into your day, remember to ease back into your activity - ya don't want any crazy injuries!

Surgery date: June 4, 2014
Aman Kandola replied to AnnaMaria's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@dreamondreamer.....We can be surgery buddies since our surgery date is the same!!!! I am really really excited. Like most of us, I have struggled with weight all my life but it became an even greater struggle due to a partial hysterectomy at 31 and then the last ovary being taken out 3 years ago. I feel like I am finally going to have a tool that will help me in my journey to be healthy. I have anxiety too but I am confident that everything will work out well. We will have to stay in touch and encourage each other. I am so glad that I found this forum. This journey is not meant to be taken alone and I am so glad to among friends -
Day 6 and massive, scary weight loss 32lbs!
Tom328 replied to Tom328's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I'm not going to be upset if it slows down. I don't want to lose weight this fast. I plan to do my best to avoid the need to have plastic surgery (ie. working out as much as physically possible etc..) It still hasn't slowed. I lost 2 more last night. 293 and flying off of me. Oh yeah, I also don't want to have to buy new clothes so fast (written while smiling!!!) -
Hello Mama_Gee, sorry this is super long. I went through Options at Kaiser Panorama City. I started classes in late September of 2017 and ended them on December 7th. Cleared by Dr. Alskaf (head of Options) on December 13th losing 12.8 pounds during the Options program. Then had to wait for my surgeon appointment and was called right before Christmas. Met with my surgeon Dr. Kim at Kaiser West L.A. on January 8th. During that time I gained about 5 pounds, it was tough because of Christmas and New years. He said I was good to go but wanted me to loose 10 more pounds and let me know that at any point I gain weight, I would have to restart Options. I was also told once close to the 10 pounds to schedule surgery. After getting back on track I called to schedule surgery, knowing i would hit the 10 pounds in a few weeks. I was scheduled for surgery on March 7th 2018, with pre-op surgery appointment on February 23rd, which by then I had lost 12.4 pounds. On surgery day I when weighed I had lost an additional 5.5 pounds. Surgery went smooth and I was home the next day on the 8th. So far its been a great experience and the team at kaiser very helpful. Best advice I can give you is don't miss any of your options classes. I noticed people who did had a tough time making them up. Also I recommend the Surgery group meetings. I go weekly and its great help because every week the Behaviorist and Nutritionist alternate and you are with people who are or have gone through the surgeries, we even have a few who will be going. Some of the people in my group are 5 plus years out and its good to pick their head about experiences. Overall I'm very happy with Kaisers program and found it very beneficial in the expectation leading to and after surgery. The after surgery group is the best, yesterday I learned a few recipes that are great tasting and very satisfying for my sleeve, without making me feel icky. Best of luck.

Losing lbs fast but worried it's all muscle
smooshycheeks posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi peeps, I had sx on 8/9. Was back for readmission last week bc of dehydration. At first my weight loss was slow. Now it seems to be about a pound a day (or more). But I feel it's all muscle that I'm losing, not fat, and I'm worried. I'm definitely NOT getting in all my fluids or protein- maybe 40ish grams of protein and 32 oz liquids. I'm also exhausted and dizzy. I can't eat/drink anything with artificial sweeteners/flavors since they make me sick. I'm also a vegetarian. Last week while inpatient my labs showed I was in ketosis. Now I'm on phase 2, so full liquids and purees. Still getting in a protein shake each day, plus eggs, and some carbs like potatoes and sweet potatoes. I'm hoping that any muscle mass I'm losing will be able to regain once I can exercise. Is this how it's supposed to go?
