    Going out

I did not go out to eat for three weeks, and then I was on mushies and had mashed potatoes. If you must go just bring your protein shake with you or order a glass of milk (if you are allowed milk).

ok i am a baby... this hurts..

I had diarrhea. Because I didn't take the drug w/morphine (opiates can constipate you) I had diarrhea and was told it was the anesthesia. It lasted about a week. It wasn't bad, just troublesome. The shoulder? MOVE! WALK WALK WALK! the more you walk, the more it dissipates. When mine hurt terribly, I'd rub it or have my husband rub it and it quit in about 1-2 minutes. You can use a heating pad if you want (i hate heating pads but lots love 'em LOL) just don't use it over your surgical sites until you check w/your docs office; some use internal sutures that dissolve over time and if you get the area too hot it CAN prematurely dissolve them. Just hang in there; it gets better. Walking really does help your body break the gas down and reabsorb it. Some swear by Gas x but it never touched my shoulder pain, but walking and rubbing it when it got TOO much did the trick.
  3. I have been home 3 days and I am still having terrible pains in my left shoulder. It comes and goes, but when it hits it is excruciating. I know it is the gas they put in, so I was looking for something to help it go away. I read all the suggestions and it helped to know it was NORMAL, but a bit discouraging to know it may last for weeks. Is it normal to have sudden diarrhea? I hope that will not be permanent. I have lost 40 and have 60 more to go.

    Pain beneath incision

I wasn't cleared to do anything abdominal until I was cleared to do weights at the 6 week mark, but for about the first 3-4 weeks I had pain in a similar spot. Freaked me out a bit, until the surgeon explained that they come in at an angle and the "inside hole" wasn't in the same place as the "outside hole". Still worth calling the doc and seeing what they say, just in case something weird is going on! Good luck to you
  5. I had my surgery on Oct 1st and I was absolutely terrified of going under... it was my biggest fear. Like you, I'd never had surgery with general anesthesia. I was worried that I would wake up during the surgery or even worse, never wake up. I had an awful time sleeping the night before. My stomach was in knots all the way to the hospital at 5am, and then waiting to go back for prep. My wife stayed with me all the way until they rolled me to the operating room. When she broke off to go to the waiting room, I had tears, I was a mess. I got to the operating room and I'm sure they saw the fear in my eyes. They had me get on the table, strapped my arms out to form a T, and put some monitors on. The anesthesiologist (who was not the one that came by and met me an hour earlier) never said anything to me until she said "I'm giving you some medicine now" at the same time the nurse had a mask over my mouth and said to breath... and that was all I remember. Next thing I know I'm waking up in the recovery room, completely at ease. I know where you are... before surgery, I laid my fear out on here just like you. It definitely helped to get everything out, and it was awesome to read the responses from everyone that it would be ok. Knowing where you are, I understand there isn't much I can say to put your mind at ease. You are going to be scared, and that's ok, but don't cancel your surgery over it. Roll with the fear and I promise you'll be laughing about it the week after surgery.

    Approved and waiting!

Well, it was a short journey to jump through all of Tricare's hoops. I was approved my first try. Now it is a "long" wait to be banded. In comparrison to my 20 years of being heavy it is almost instantanious. I will be banded 6 months from the start of my journey...10 weeks after my approval. My doctor is so booked up. The day I turned 40 my body acted like it never had before. Everything hurt. My sleep patterns grew worse. I'd sleep in and still feel I needed more. I had SEVERE headaches that would last over a week. I had edima in my legs, arms and face. Come to find out I have Sleep Apnea and my Thyroid was 30 points low. I didn't know that your thyroid could control so much. Thankfully I heard Tricare would approve gastric banding as of 2-1-08. It was only December, so I started everything rolling with my testing, counseling, referals and research. It has paid off. Think how far into summer my surery would be if I hadn't started early.

    Weigh in and insurance

I had the same thing happen actually. I thankfully realized I had gained 5 lbs when I went to see a different doctor. I was 285 at initial apt and 290 a couple weeks later. Unfortunately every insurance is different. My surgeons group had a specific person who dealt with my insurance company's rules for the pre-op diet so I called her to verify. When I did see the 290lb I did get sad for a couple days because my insurance won't let me gain any weight. I have to stay the same or lose so I started looking at what I was eating. I have a sweet tooth. I'm working with a therapist now to get mentally prepared for after surgery, no binges or overeating, and cut back on sweets. I was able to get down to 284 in a week that way. I follow high protein, high fiber, low fat, low carb. Sugar doesn't make you fat, fat makes you fat. I'm also vegan. Animal meat is much more fatty than tofu, tempeh, or seitan. Oh, and don't know if you know this, drinking alot of water will help with water retention during your period which will help with weight. I also lift weights or do leg lifts, stability ball etc while I'm watching TV. I can't do much as I have back problems and chronic pain. These are just a few things I do. I hope these help you! Good luck! You can do it! Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

  10. Well I had my lap band removed and my sleeve surgery May 21st and since the surgery I lost 12 pounds. Now that I have started introducing more foods into me I have already GAINED 4 pounds back. I am constantly tired "work 8 hours a day and have a two year old" I walk every evening and I watch my fat and sugar intake like my Dr told me to do. I haven't gotten my vitamins started yet hopefully today I can go pick them up. Any suggestions on what to take? Any advice on the gaining? HELP!! Very discouraged after all I've been though with the band not working and now I'm discouraged with this :thumbup1:

    Hungry?

I am almost 3 weeks post op sleeve. I sometimes feel hungry. Is this normal? Part of me thinks maybe my sleeve didn't work. It also maybe gas!? Anyone else feel like this?
  13. Today I started soft foods. Yippee!!!! I had a very strange sensation when I ate my yogurt w/ fruit. I felt very full in the top of my stomach (my stoma I guess). Couldn't have eaten another bite. But the bottom have of my stomach felt empty and kept growling. Not gurgling with food, but growling from emptiness. It wasn't head hunger either because I didn't want to eat another bite. Very strange. Also, I just experience "sliming". I was so afraid it was going to come back up. But I lifted my arms and walked it off. Thank goodness. I forgot about the warning that soft foods need to moist. But the good news is that I obviously have some restriction (from swelling I'm assuming). Full liquids were just going right through me with no restriction at all. I'm glad to be on the next phase. I hope the restriction stays for awhile since I can't get a fill for 4 more weeks.

    Introducing Myself to Everyone

Thank you for sharing your story. My weight loss slowed for a few weeks even though I was eating right. That passed and now I am steadily losing.

Scared to death now and having doubts...

Hi.. I know how you feel. I had surgery 4 weeks ago and am doing very well. Have lost 28 lbs since my worst weight and I keep losing am down another pound this morning (have to change my ticker). I only started reading he boards after the surgery but if I had before I would feel like you do. I think you have to remember that many who are here are lookign for answers to problems and that the majority have none. I have had none of the problems you talk about and I am so determined to make this work I do everything I have been told. Follow everything to the letter and I will not fail. Dont worry about it but be aware that the band is only a tool and that you have to work with it and be motivated. It is easy though since it changes how you feel about the food. Try not to read about all the big problems, I am doing fine but get the same reaction you do when I see some of them and it scares me. I am very happy that I had it done, I am already fitting into clothes that I bought but have never been able to fit into. Last night I had what seemd like heartburn like soemthign was stuck and maybe I ate something wrong but I am fine now and the other pound down made me feel good. Convince yourself that you will not fail and don't read the bad parts unless you have problems later. I am older than you are so look at this as my last chance, I was not always overweight only the last 15 or so years and I want to be my old self. Think positive and feel good about your decision.. I feel I am rambling and repeating myself but I can feel what you are feeling. I am no longer hungry, get satisfied with the tiny portions and don't crave candy and diet coke, it just doesn't bother me to even look at others eating it.. I may be back if I think of something else. Feel free to send me email if you want.. Lise

    How sore were you?

I was up and walking around the next morning and getting in and out of the hospital bed on my own. The quicker you are up and moving around the quicker you recover. First night home was a breeze, of course I was sore getting up and down from a laying or sitting position but I took my pain meds as directed and the following Monday I was back in work..... I worked 1/2 day in the office and 1/2 at home for 2nd week and by 3rd week I was in office full time.

    Stall

Stick to your plan and be patient. Look for the NSVs and make sure you are taking your measurements. I lost my first size while I was in my first stall. Good luck!!
  21. I was sleeved on Tuesday 11/13! Came home from the hospital yesterday, still felt pretty shitty, but today I started feeling more like me, like a tired, sore version of me, but, still. I keep feeling the urge to burp, but they're not really coming out. I'm excited to be starting my journey. I bought some powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein powder - hubby has been adding that to everything for me. I still haven't felt the "full" feeling, but I get scared and stop eating after a little bit. I had a half a small mug of chicken broth for bfast. half small mug homemade potato garlic Soup for lunch, same thing for dinner. Small cup of sugar free caramel pudding. And then Crystal Lite. All with Protein Powder added into it to reach about 35-40 grams of protein for the day. He said get to 60, I just don't feel the urge, but I may try for another 5-10 in a little bit. Does this sound about right? My doc, I gotta say, I'm a huge fan of what he did for me, but his personality and everything else = toilet. Not big on the small talk/bedside manner at all. After surgery I didn't see him at all, the next day I breifly saw another doc from his practice that I'd never met before, and then on checkout day he came in, pulled out my drain, told me to make an appointment for 2 weeks, told me I was going home, and left, total of about 2 minutes facetime, 5 if you include pre-op! But, it seems he did a good job, so, I can't complain. I just feel a little bit unsupported by the doc in all this. He didn't tell me what to do, as far as the gauze/bandages on my wounds, if/when I should replace them. He said to eat full liquids until I see him in 2 weeks and follow the paperwork I got on my first visit (back in August) but only because I thought to ask as he was walking out the door. The nurses in the hospital were well informed thankfully, and they said he's like that with everyone. Always seems to be in a rush! Ah well. I'm sleeved, and I didn't want a real clingy doc that wanted to see me all the time anyway! Thank goodness for my online research because I'd be totally lost!!
  22. I read all the stories: complications, unable to eat or drink, drains! None of that for me. I lost 35 lbs as of today. My sleeve is not too big or small. Just perfect. I just LOVE Dr. Mark Pleatman for being so incredibly skilled and experienced. Love, love, love. I am in an incredible shape! I can EAT. Super small portions, but I can eat! I could have been one of those patients suffering so much post op...GRATEFUL! RELIEVED! THANKFUL!

    White Pasta

I was told also no white pasta or easer yet (lol) no white four products at all for a while. Well last week i went to lunch with my boss and had a burrito ate about half went down fine but about 15 min.'s later OH MY GOD the pain. I guess the torttilla swelled up and OUCH. So i've learned my lession. Others will say "check with your doc" this is good sound advise. I've also read where others have no problem with breads and pastas. If you want to be a hard head (lol) like me (I'm always testing my limits) you could try but its not advisable.
  24. So I had my first appt Sept 2nd with NP.. I already did my sleep study last Sunday which I hated..I couldn't sleep.. hopefully I slept enuff.. Next week I have my endoscopy .. and my echogram.. by the end of this Month I will have all my test done and psych appt..then 3 more weigh ins.. When I started I thought omg.. 6 months of weigh ins.. I Will never get this surgery but it's going pretty fast.. now I have to decide if I want the sleeve or bypass.. I have acid reflux.. I am leaning towards sleeve..even if I have to take meds for a whole for my reflux.. it got worse as I was gaining weight.. so maybe it will go away as I lose weight.. I'm just letting everyone just starting..don't get discourage .. the time flies .. :-)
  25. I was banded Jan 10th and just had my first fill. I had a couple of other appts. where my Dr. decided I didn't need a fill because I wasn't hungry and I was losing at a good rate. Friday I went in and I am still not hungry except when I should be (unlike before when I was always hungry). I did tell him I could eat more than before depending on what it was. I was still getting stuck once in awhile trying new stuff so I know I had some restriction from the fluid he put in during surgery. He decided to do a fill and the process itself wasn't too bad. He had me drink a small amount of water and that went well. No problem. It wasn't till about 4 hours later that I started to have issues. When I drink anything now there's all this gurgling going on ( like a plugged drain )and it seems like it takes forever for the fluid to go down. I feel like something is stuck in the back of my throat all the time and have a kind of nauseous feeling. Do you think this is normal after a fill and maybe it will ease up in a few days or should I think about getting some fluid taken out next week. I had 2cc in after surgery and he just added 2 cc. I have a 10cc band.
