    Is this reflux?

omeprozole is prilosec 100% incorrect. You are MORE likely to get GERD or reflux with the sleeve because the pyloric valve creates a closed, high pressure system. I was forced to revise to RNY from the sleeve because I developed severe reflux after surgery. If I had reflux prior to surgery I would choose RNY over VSG every day. I just wanted to take the opportunity to correct the misconception Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. My surgeon said the same thing. Keep in mind that many sleeve patients end up having a revision to Rny some years out because of the gerd. Im not willing to take that chance. Rny for me. Good luck Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  3. I was told by my surgeon that you are more likely to have issues with gerd, after the sleeve. He said," 1/3 of sleeve patients will experience gerd after the sleeve, but what he is seeing now, 3 to 4 years after a sleeve surgery, many people experience horrendous gerd and are getting revision to Rny. Hope that sheds some light on the subject for you. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

    Is this reflux?

I have gerd and have had it for years. When I went to my consultabout one month ago my surgeon said," about 1/3 of sleeve patients will get gerd after", also he,advised RNY because of my gerd. He,went on,to,say, that," what he is,seeibg more and more,3 to 4 years out of sleeve surgery patients are havibg horrible gerd and,are getting a revision to RNY". 5. I had my band surgery in November 2012. It was great to start with, and I had great restriction and good weight loss, but upset my gallbladder. I was having sometimes daily attacks and we didn't know what was going on. I thought I was experiencing a "stuck" moment, but after 9 months of back and forth for fills and unfills and my surgeon not really sure what was going on his associate sent me for an ultrasound. It showed so many stones... i was scheduled for its removal and had to have all my fill out for the op. And that was where my weightloss started to stall. In the 2 years after that I've lost only 10kg and struggle with being too restricted or not restricted enough. I'm just tired of not losing my weight and that the band isn't really working for me the way it should. I'm looking into getting a band to sleeve revision in January 2017.

    How did you decide?

I have LapBand currently. I'm revising to RNY due to regain and complications with my band. I chose RNY over VSG because my surgeon feels it is a safer conversion. This has to do with where the staple line will be in RNY vs VSG. For VSG the staple line would go through an already damaged part of my stomach. The RNY staple line will be in a part of my stomach not affected by my band. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App

    September Sleevers!

I so hear you! I have family members who I do not see eye to eye with concerning politics. I'm really into politics, and I'm glad that I had my revision because I'm here a lot during my free time instead of Twitter. Lol good girl for not eating over it . 8. Hello Everyone! It has been a long time since i have updated. I had started my journey to weight loss in 2011. I had wanted the Lap Band. I jumped through all the hoops my former insurance wanted me to. Then, when we submitted to them for surgery. They said that the place i was going to was no longer in network. They wanted me to drive 5-6 hours to go to the doctor. So, i gave up. I spiraled out of control with my eating. It is now 2016. I am at my highest weight ever. I am in pain from it and totally fed up! My insurance changed a couple months ago ( Anthem was bought out by Cigna) I thought what the hell, let me look to see if they cover it. AND THEY DID/DO!!! I am beyond excited. Mostly because i am not doing this alone. My adopted Mom had the lap band 6 years ago and it failed her. So we are both having the Sleeve. Hers being a revision. But i am excited and nervous but thats to be expected right? This site helped me so much last time. I recommended this to my friend also. I look forward to taking my journey with all of you and reading everyone's stories. 2017 is definitely going to be my year!!

Why is everyone converting from band to sleeve?

I'm revising from band to sleeve in two weeks. If you didn't have the band, please don't make broad statements about why I need this revision. I didn't "abuse the band". It injured me and continues to do so. I had my band for more than six years- I thought it would be in place forever. Unfortunately, my body has decided that enough is enough. My esophagus is worn out from working hard to get food through the restriction. It has nothing to do with eating around the band or drinking milkshakes. I did what was asked-I continued care with my surgeon, I saw the dietitian and exercise physiologist, and ate as required for six years. I lost a lot of weight but once things started going bad, none of that mattered. I did my due diligence and researched before I was banded in 2010. I resent your implication that I did this to myself. You have your theories about why the band doesn't work, but you need to be careful when you make blanket statements. Yes, it's dropped in usage but it isn't just because everyone abused it or ate around it-the problem is with the device itself. OP-I'm revising because I can no longer eat food and have it go through without sitting in the back of my throat. My last upper GI showed that the barium didn't clear the band for almost five minutes. My band now sits empty, ready for revision. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Amen. I love your reply. I had lapband surgery back in 2011, when i weight over 500lbs. The band was great and I lost over 240lbs. Life was great. I was running, exercising everyday, staying up on ally support doctors, dieticians, fills etc. Back in 2014 after a fill the band eroded into my stomach. I was not drinking milkshakes, overeating, or finding ways to overeat. Long story short I spent a week in the hospital on two of the best anitibiotics known to man and required emergency surgery to removed the band. I then spent the next two months out of work on hardcore oral antibiotics treating a staph infection that nearly killed me. Do not ever make assumptions or accusations that you know everything about what some of us went through. If you are just starting trouble because of your own insecurities take it somewhere else because some of us actually use this site as a portion of our continued support. Sorry for the rant but I could not keep that in. I went forward with bypass surgery andbhad it oct 3rd 2016. I will keep you all posted on how it goes. Seeking Buddies 5'2" & Under

Hello all, I'm 4'11' and pre op I weighed 229 the day of my surgery May 27th I weighed 219. Today I weigh 181 so total loss 48lbs in about 4 and 1/2 months. It's a good outcome but as of last month I started having bad heartburn. I take Omeprazole 20mg twice daily and it still doesn't help. My doctor said it was because I was eating large portions than I should which is true. I started back all the way to liquids again and hoping things will change. Otherwise I have no clue what to do. These bad eating habits are coming back. It's so hard. Blahhh. Forgot to mention I had a revision from band to sleeve. I'm starting to think I should have just done the bypass ???????? There's another wrinkle or layer to the stats section. Some people actually lose oodles of weight before having any surgery. Often they're people who started at 400+.

@proudgrammy hehe this time I was just looking at one of my posts today, and thought, that really looks odd. :) ty ^^

@WLSResources/ClothingExch So very true, like during pre-op diets. Some of those people are so amazing to lose so much weight on their own. I struggled big time :P:)

    VSG or RNY

I was gonna have the sleeve. I dont have too much weight to lose, about 70lbs. I have had gerd for years and the surgeon said its very common to have it after the sleeve surgery and many people get revisions to the RNY. im not will to do that so RNY will be the,way I go. I think what she said is true for a number of people, but she didn't say it was for everyone. I think she was offering her input as you are. No two people have the same story. Your experience is yours. The OP asked a question, she gave her response as what she had been told, not to attack or offend any of us with bands. Easy now. Best Decision I Ever Made.

If it helps, I'm revising from band to sleeve and my surgeon says that with today's techniques, results from the sleeve are close to the bypass with very few of the side effects or possible future issues of the bypass. So I agreed to the sleeve. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

Why is everyone converting from band to sleeve?

I can't respond for everyone, but here's my story. I started at 283 in July 2009 with the band. I got down to 218 and maintained between 223-228 until I got pregnant in 2012. Although I was still very overweight, I was happy with my band and much healthier. I would've been satisfied and would've had the band again just for that weightloss. During my pregnancy, I didn't gain much. I got up to 244 thanks to preeclampsia. I had hyperemesis during my pregnancy, and I had to have a complete unfil. My daughter came early, so she was in NICU for 58 days. I stayed with her the entire time. Between being hospitalized before her birth until she came home, I lived at the hospital for over 2 months. By the time we came home, I was back to my prepregnancy weight. I tried to get fills again and could only tolerate 1/2 of the fill I was at before I got pregnant. (I had 5ccs in a 10cc band; now I have 2.5ccs) Ever since the fills started again, I have not been able to get to a good spot. I still can't get food down until the late afternoon 3-4 days a week. My thyroid has also taken a crap. I gained back up to 270. My thyroid levels are not stable. I am constantly having to increase my meds. I am bordering close to diabetes, and I've been back on the diet rollercoaster (but with little success losing, so not much to gain back) and my endo says enough is enough, and I need surgery. I had not been to my surgeon in over 2 years because I didn't see the point since I wasn't needing a fill. Come to find out, my band may have slipped while it was unfilled, so that could very well have been causing my issues. In any case, I'm now on the road to revision to RNY. My surgeon feels it's a safer revision due to the location of the band and where these two surgeries require staple lines. So..that's my very long story as to why I will be having a revision... Mine doesn't either. His patients have not been as successful with the Band as with the sleeve and RNY.

    One week Post op update

I'm following. Also, for OP, I think someone else asked, but I'm gonna ask again. lol Did you have an EGD before your revision? If so, did they not see the problems before hand? I ask because I have my EGD this coming Friday. I'm hoping to learn whether I will have 1 or 2 operations to convert and to what degree my band is messed up. I will be so disappointed if my EGD looks good then they open me up and find more problems and can't do my RNY at the same time they remove the band.
  18. I'm an admittedly picky eater. Add to that an allergy to seafood and shellfish. I can't stand eggs and there are several veggies I don't like. (Zucchini, squash, Brussel sprouts all make me want to vomit!) I see lots of people discuss their daily meal plans centering on eggs and tuna or other fish or shrimp. Any suggestions for picky eaters like me? I'm post-LapBand pre-RNY revision, and I'm trying to plan way ahead. Thanks in advance. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App

Is the sleeve really "just as good"

That's, why I weighing out the options I have read many people that have the revision from band to sleeve have had mostly complications due leaks so they end up having the bypass to correct it. So I was thinking maybe the bypass would be best... Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

Is the sleeve really "just as good"

I'm interested to follow this. I'm beginning the process to revise from my band. My surgeon said I could do either, but in his experience RNY was safer post band. He explained on a model of a stomach where the band sits and how the staple line for the sleeve goes directly through where the band was and said that makes it more likely to leak. He showed where the cuts are made for the RNY and how they are below the part affected by the band. Also, I didn't know this until my support group meeting just this week, but the hunger part that is cut away with the sleeve does grow back eventually. Crazy, huh? I was hoping for the sleeve because it seemed less involved, but I trust my surgeon completely so if he recommends RNY, RNY it is for me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App

Is the sleeve really "just as good"

I am 6 years post sleeve and couldn't be happier with my results. I started with a BMI of 50, lost 160 pounds and maintain with a BMI around 22-23. I saw hundreds of WLS patients Come and go through my support group. These included band, sleeve, RNY and DS patients. The one common thread among the success stories was the individual's commitment to their new lifestyle. It is the food choices we make that determine success or failure, not necessarily the type of surgery. I saw just as many failed bypasses as sleeves. The "failures" were the ones that went back to eating the way they did before surgery. No surgery can overcome bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. The person you mentioned who regained 40 pounds would have probably done so with bypass as well. For me, personal therapy was the key to my success. Without the help of my therapist to change my thought patterns and discover new ways to deal with stress and sadness and anger and every other emotion out there, I probably would have failed my VSG, just like I failed every other diet in my life. These mental changes have been far more important to my ability to maintain my loss than my sleeve itself. Not everyone needs therapy, some are able to conquer their demons alone, but those people are rare. I would suggest taking an honest critical look at why you failed with the band. That will give you a starting point to know what you need to do different moving forward. One of the surgeons in the bariatric group I was with absolutely would not perform any revision surgery unless his patients first underwent extensive therapy with a psychiatrist. Kind of like a 6 month mental preop diet. I guess he didn't want to waste his time with someone who will waste their surgery a second time around. A lot of his patients were pissed about it and some even went to other surgeons, but in the end, the stats of his patients were impressive. I will leave it up to the revision patients to tell you the specific physical differences between surgeries because I have no personal experience with that. Good luck with your decision.

Is the sleeve really "just as good"

You are not the only one with the same fear and thoughts I am planning in having the sleeve main reason the though of the hunger hormone being cut out I'd very appealing to me;) I too have had horrible results complications with lap band ugh...This the reason for the revision, I was researching the by pass as well same reason as you!! I know many people that have had the by pass including 4 family members and a few friends out of say 8.. 2 gained their weight back Also, a good friend had the sleeve 2 years ago and has lost 100 lbs although she didnt previously have the band I know truly is on how we change our eating habits a d finding the right tool to help and the band sucked!!! I never found my sweet spot and was ALWAYS HUNGRY!!!! I have read the sleeve complication section and see most people with complications have to have a by pass so..... I'm glad you posted this because it will be interesting to hear more suggestions and I agree I want to get this one right this time... Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    October sleevers?

I was revision from band. I had the band removed and sleeve done in the same surgery on Tuesday. Recovering so well. Like the others, a bit of gas pain but I was so surprised at how ok I was. Personally the pain I experienced from the band was WAY worse than the sleeve. You don't feel pain at all in the tummy like you did with the band. I just feel like I have indigestion. band to bypass in 10 days!

I'm following. I've had the band since 2009 and am having revision to RNY. I lost 65# with the band and stayed there or pretty close for about 4 years. I had a complete unfilled during my pregnancy and after that have not been able to tolerate much fill. Also, my Hashimotos decided to basically kill my thyroid. So, I've put on all my weight except 15#. I go next week for my EGD to see how soon I'll be converted and whether it will be one surgery or two. Feeling bad

I think it would make me scared! I'm having the revision after lap band failure and complications and that's what I am terrified of my horrible relationship with food...I eat bad things now and feel guilty, but..... that make me eat more etc that's my pattern...Don't worry we are not perfect and we are far from it it's done and over just move forward I think this time I'm going to seek counsling and group meetings more frequently to see if that helps with my love hate relationship with food.. However, we are all made different and think different thats why this forum is so great to see and hear different perspectives:) YOU CAN AND WILL DO THIS!!!!!!!!
