Did any of you experience loss of appetite during 2 wk liquid diet pre-op?
Frustr8 replied to Luzbella's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
And I am following this thread with baited breath and a modicum of apprehension. You see I start my own prediet August 1st,and I ACTUALLY chose this length. My Bariatric program at the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY gave me a choice of 2, 3, or 4 weeks. Why did I choose the longest? Better Healing Smoother Surgery To make it less stressful on ME Smaller Liver Size You see, although I have lost close to 40 pounds I am climbing on that surgery cart with a weight still over 300 pounds. On a 5ft8in 72 year old body that IS NOT a cool state of affairs. I undoubtedly have NASH, are you ready for his full name and easy description? Okay Here it goes Non Alcoholic Steato -Hepatitis. all it mean is "like my body, my liver is FAT" NOW my surgeon Dr Bradley J Needleman MD, uber-smart man, super skillful surgeon, and the chief of Bariatric Surgery/Metabolic Weight Loss at my hospital has a choice of a big fat blubbery liver or a nice sleek smooth happy slender liver to lift out of the way to get to my stomach, which would he and I prefer? I believe choice #2! Now the dietary plan, compared with many I have heard on here, is not SO BAD. Weird how every surgeon, be it a he or she surgeon, has their own take on things and their own path to get there. One lady I remember was on skim cow's milk and a gangoozel (one of my favorite words for a lot) of vitamins and minerals, there are some who don't even believe in a prediet and a bunch in between. Now mine, although it isn't as much fun as eating Willy-nilly is pretty Okay. So Frustr8 is signing on for a month of Dietary Purgatory, just like the Real Purgatory it takes a lot of prayer to get out of there! So while all you others are celebrating yours being over and surgery right around the corner, ME, the Brave Little Engine Who Could, will be chugging along in Central Ohio making her way towards a September 5th surgery, hopefully dropping pounds along the way. Vitamins, minerals, K-chlor, Lasix and Wellbutrin in my pill tote and Hope in My❤. Ah Folks, I'm going to make it, Yes I Am! Any dimishment of appetite, Glory Hallelujah! I'll Take It! ☕💊🍝🍶 -
I found a protein shake on Amazon that has 40 grams of protein in each carton
EasternNC replied to apositivelife4me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't like the Premiere shakes. The only one I don't mind drinking is the Atkins Dark Chocolate shake. However, I am doing research to find the best protein drink/powder. https://primesurgicare.com/dos-and-donts-of-protein-drinks-for-bariatric-patients/ -
Surgery for someone younger than 21?

Kim is right on all counts. Also, you should speak to someone at your insurance carrier specifically about bariatric surgery to see if they cover it and what is necessary to qualify. -
Vertical Sleeve at 20 years old ?
champion818 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hey hope everyone is having a great day ! I want to come on here and just get some honest help and advice hopefully . To give you a brief summary about me , I do suffer from obesity and have a major weight problem. I can safely say that a majority of my weight gain has been within a period of 2 years. From the age of 18 - 20 years old I have managed to put on a whopping 80 pounds . May of 2018 I weighed in at 305 pounds and since then have lost around 17 pounds which puts me at 286. I have struggled with gaining a mass amount and loosing for a while. This time I feel like it has been a tougher time for me because I actually hit 300 pounds and that was a weight I told myself I would never reach. I do not suffer from binge eating disorder because I never sit and just eat a mass amount of food . I believe I make poor decisions on what I eat overall. Looking back at how I ate food , I could have easily been consuming 4,000 calories a day . Now I consume 1,700 -2,000 calories a day which keeps me satisfied . I do light exercise and occasionally go to the gym during the week. ( no set plan , just come and go when i have time). I have been following this for about 2 months now . I have tried many ways to loose weight such as weight watchers , hiring a personal trainer and counting calories. Through my attempts I always fail to loose the weight necessary and become highly discouraged. The struggle with my morbid obesity has been very tough for me . My whole life I have been over weight , but now that im a young adult Its become a huge burden to my body and social life. I have spoken to my doctor about my concerns regarding my obesity and we have done blood tests which all came back fine. He did mention if I was interested in doing weight loss surgery to help with my obesity and that is something I have been considering for almost a year alone. Medically I believe I qualify , due to my BMI of 42.5 and having asthma along with it. I want to see a nutritionist and bariatric doctor so I can be consulted and exhaust all my other options before I truely do the surgery ( if i get approved). Overall Im just tired of gaining so much weight after I loose a small amount. My life has been dramatically affected and want a change. -

Hello, I recently was brought the topic of getting this surgery and I have been doing reearch for a couple of months however I have been receiving mixed information and am not completely sure on what is correct. I recently just got insurance for Medicaid, Sunshine Health since I am a full-time employee and student. I have been going to a couple of doctor visits and of course, my weight is my biggest issue. I am in the process of getting my breast reduction surgery covered, which my PCP advised that it is almost completely sure I will get itfully covered due to severe back pain, unbalanced pelvis, not being able to exercise nor digest, causing severe insomnia and headaches. This is why, even though it is a complete different surgery, I wanted to know if I would qualify for a bariatric surgery given it is also my weight one of the biggest factors regarding the deterioration of my health. I haven’t brought this up to my doctor yet, because he is focused on getting all the paperwork for my breast reduction. But as a woman , of course, I am concerned that ifI later on try to lose weight once again or decide on getting surgery. My breasts might drop. Some information I have is the following: Age: 20 Weight: 174 and Height: 4”11 Some of my conditions are severe back pain, neck issues, DD+ breast size, insomnia, unbalanced pelvis that does not allow me to exercise properly, and my pain causes bad digestion. I am insured by Sunshine Health under Medicaid and reading their policies it’s very confusing to know whether I would qualify or not. I also have medical history of chiropractor, nutritionist/dietician (about4-5 months) , and also proof of paying for a gym membership with a personal trainer which only lost around 4 pounds in 5 months. I have eating disorder in terms of having a hard time getting hungry so I would eat once or twice a day but it is mainly because of my pain causing digestive problems . It is bad, but I avoid getting sick by trying not to eat too much. Metabolism is non existent causing me to gain weight despite of not over-eating. Anyone know any extra qualifiers? should I join a program? Thanks in advance.

Frustr8 replied to apositivelife4me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No but I found even my Bariatric program for the sainted Ohio State University does recommend that you may mix a certain protein powder( I believe it is an isolate ) with almond milk and still, have a drink within their guidelines. So almond milk mixed with some powdered still very fine. When I did have a 1st degree relative with casein intolerance, it might make me more prone to develop it also. 👈😥👉 Life is seldom as fearful as our. fears think it will be. ......a wise fortune 🍪..... -
PROTEIN ABSORPTION MYTH: can a person only absorb so much protein in, say, one hour?
Chrisb428 replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My bariatric surgeon told me that the super high protein shakes, waters etc were overkill. He said our bodies would absorb on average 20-30g at a time and sice we were to be taking in a steady supply of protei throughout the day that more than that at a sitting was unnecessary. -
PROTEIN ABSORPTION MYTH: can a person only absorb so much protein in, say, one hour?
Born in Missouri posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Is it true that a person can only absorb a certain amount of protein at a time, like 20g or 30g? This is mostly FALSE. The body absorbs the amount of protein it needs at any given time – it doesn’t turn off or automatically stop at 20g or 30g or 40g. There is a myth that protein absorption is capped at a maximum amount for a given period of time. While the body is able to absorb as much as 300 to 400 grams of protein during a 24-hour period, this is not recommended because there are complications associated with a protein intake that high. The high end of protein-per-day recommendation is 100 to 120 grams. Absorption of protein relies on many factors including – source of protein, length of the Roux limb in gastric bypass, size of the sleeve or pouch and one's intake of micronutrients like zinc. The myth probably has something to do with the recommendation that it’s always better to spread out one's protein. The human body is full of variations for different circumstances – sometimes the body needs more protein such as right after surgery or sometimes less protein, as in the middle of a long sedentary workday. Five small balanced meals or three meals and two protein snacks is a universal bariatric recommendation. https://www.bariatriceating.com/2016/08/faq-dietician-told-can-absorb-20g-protein-time-limit-shake-size/ Bariatric surgery isn’t mentioned in this article, but there’s this: "while it’s technically true that we aren’t absorbing 30 grams (let alone more) of protein all at once, it will eventually be absorbed." (In other words, we don't just poop it out.) https://www.marksdailyapple.com/dear-mark-how-much-protein-can-you-absorb-and-use-from-one-meal/- 20 replies

omg mine starts in 5 days now and I'm freaking out lol. I'm walking around my house saying goodbye to my straws, coffee...anything else not liquid (lol). Luckily my diet is allowing me to have 4 meal-replacement shakes a day + a bariatric cuisine/dinner , so I hope it helps get me past the "omg I'm hungry" phase of the pre-op diet.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

The Bariatric keys for success 😂😂😂 -
Clarify what, exactly? I have Anthem BC BS and I also have to be followed by the surgeon and nutritionist for 6 months, have a psych evaluation, cardiology visit, stress test, and attend two support group meetings, and have a barium swallow test. Like allwet said, it all sounds completely normal and expected. Are you getting two different sets of requirements depending on the doctor? If so, I'd go first with what your insurance requirements are. Then your bariatric surgeon shiuld do what insurance requires. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Qualification/ priority health
Frustr8 replied to marie1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hmmm on top of my GERD I have Sleep Apnea, Arthritis since 25 and Venous Stasis and I am 72. Before you and the whole 🌏world count me out, I am stubborn , red-headed and have much going for me. I entered this life shaking my fists and screaming and I doubt if I am going to change now. Let's see who I have outlived? The paternal cousins who suggested I kill myself, the husband who said I couldn't live without him, the high school guidance person who wasn't sure I'd amount to much, maybe I should emulate the other girls in my class and get married, the doctor who said I'd be diabetic by 50 and I still am not, the guys in high school, after high school and into college who thought I wasn't worth dating and dated my best friends instwas to hurt my feelings, the 3 Lesbians in my class who also wouldn't ask me out, well 1 did but she said I was disgustingly straight. And last, and God Forgive me for this, the psychologist who said I was unfit for bariatric surgery and messed up my attempt earlier this year, saw her obit recently. So do you think a RnY surgery will faze me? Might slow me down for a while but I'm going to be triumphant and keep on living, the difference? now I will have a surgical tool to assist me in living better. AND I Will do it with class and grace and someday I TOO will join the Veterans Forum on Bariatric Pal. Think that is a pretty worthy goal. -
I am trying to clarify some insurance requirements. I get different things from my pcp and bariatric dr. First I have western health advantage (mercy medical group). I am told I have to be followed by the surgeon and his staff for 6 months. I have to see the dietician first and do my phsycological evaluation before I can see the surgeon. Can someone please clarify.

Vitamin Patches - Can we trust them?
BajanSleeve replied to BajanSleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Matt Z thanks for much for your reply. What I note is that YOU have been using them for a while and your labs are good. So that is a controlled experiment as far as I can tell. I really wanted to hear from people like you who have actually been using them for a long time. Thank you for taking the time to reply I had my surgery in Mexico and I live in Barbados so I do not have access to a medical support team. My GP is really not au fait on bariatric surgery so I have to rely on doing my own research and asking questions like this in a forum. -
I didn't have trouble with the Crazy 40s, my down fall was the Sneaky,Snarky 70s, I entered at 259 pounds, less thanb2 years later I was 355 WTF happened? IDK I can just witness that it did. Now I go forth to put Hector my teensy little bit of an gastric ulcer to sleep, slay the Ghrelin Monster once and for all, and have with the magical tool of Bariatric Surgery a much better thinner, healthier, fitter and longer life. Keep your eyes👀wide open, this might be FUN to watch!😝LOL

And @ Eastern NC - clear the path- smooth the runway- by the Grace of God , less than a week later and just before @ Summer Essence, I too will receive the gift of Bariatric Surgery on September 5th At 7 AM at OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus Ohio with my surgeon Dr Bradley J Needleman MD. I will enter with peace in my ❤ and leave although still asleep, with triumph in my being. Why this? Because I will have been granted additional years to live and praise GOD and the opportunity to still witness with my life. And although I do not expect it, and my Surgeon has never had such a loss, I will wake up in Heaven. and be allowed to sit at Jesus's feet. And either way I gain. Praise Him! ❤Frustr8

Food Before and After Photos
insta_adventurer replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Soft Proteins, yes. I used my own recipe. 2 eggs 15oz part skim ricotta 1/4 cup grated parmesan 1tsp ground garlic 1tsp black pepper Dash of basil 1tsp Italian seasoning 1tsp salt Mix all these well. Spoon 1 to 2 teaspoons into each spot on a mini muffin baking pan that you’ve sprayed with Pam. Sprinkle a touch of reduced fat mozzarella on top of each. Bake 20 minutes at 375. I’m thinking of making a bariatric cooking/recipe blog. I love cooking and being inventive and really want to stay within my approved foods. So it may be neat! -
Surgery July 18th and I have to be honest and say I have had a couple of days of buyers remorse... but several people tell me that’s normal even Bariatric nurse case manager.. out of surgery wanted 34 ounces of water which was damn near impossible.. some of the things by body likes my stomach doesn’t like carnation no sugar added breakfast essentials.. I’m post op day 9 and my stomach is still the boss of what it likes... things that are too cold or too hot it doesn’t like... my nausea has improved and the pain is just with movements.. the spasms are less frequent primarily when things are to cold or my stomach is full... I prefer to eat protein and not drink protein.... i can’t wait for that stage..

And @ Rennaa, not to rain☔on your little parade but most hospitals will not release you unless you have another adult to rely on. I can't believe I'm telling you this, I'm usually a straight honest shooter in life, but have a friend show up at the hospital, that way even if she doesn't stay the rest of the day or all night with you, the Bariatric people don't think they are abandoning you to " the wolves", you are a careful with-it person. Just trying to save you ❤ ache!

Best way to introduce eggs into the diet
Frustr8 replied to Letsgetgoing2018's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
And a little FYI for you all. Remember I have lived forever, well a VERY LONG TIME and like many of my age group I think I have an answer for Everything. Way back when I was a Young FrustaMama with 3 little Frustababies the first egg portion th3 babies were started on was hard boiled egg yolk, reasoning was it had more good value and less allergenic than egg whites. Fast forward 30-40 years, Bariatric and other doctors are saying egg whites first, egg yolks nasty and contain cholesterol. Old saying: No matter how long the world lasts everything remains the same. Sure didn't happen HERE! Who'd a thunk it would be THAT way?👈😕👉 -
Not tolerating chewable vitamins
Frustr8 replied to Letsgetgoing2018's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Please correct me if I am incorrect but aren't Children's Vitamins deficient in iron and some other minerals? Is an iron capsule or tablet sufficent suplementation or do you have to go on iron shots. I had to have those when I was 8 months pregnant and my iron levels were bordering anemia. Even with Z--track those boogers HURT! FYI when my son was born he had high bilirubin levels, spent the first week of extrauterine life under bilirubin lights, just missed having an exchange transfusion. At that time OSU's criteria was above 20, my baby boy had 19.5. Yes folks the very same hospital I will have my Bariatric Surgery at, come September, now you can see why they gave me no 😱 fear, for me it was like "Coming Home" after a long journey away. If it is possible to 💘 love an megapopulous sized medical campus, I have had only GOOD treatment at their hands. -

Oh Nic Darlin' you are from a GOOD area for support. There ate between oodles and a gangoozel of Houstonians on here I joke there must be a big poster at Doctor Offices and Hospitals in that area of Texas. It must say WANT EMOTIONAL SUPPORT? GO ON LINE AND JOIN BARIATRIC PAL! You can't swing a 10-GallonHat without hitting a Houstonian! I would say my bestest Bari-pals hail from Houston , Dallas or Fort Worth. And you rank among the smartest because you are seeking it at such a young age. Your skin will firm back up to smoothness. My poor 72 year old hide mfff! It says You used me , abused me, stuffed me full of blobby fat, now you expect me to get with the program and smooth out? Ain't gonna happen, go purchase shapewear with the money you save on food, sleekness just ain't gonna happen. You get what you get. So I will live with it. Just pray at my age I don't find a lover at MY age, once I disrobe and everything starts rolling out I may resemble Janna the Hut or his wife Guardalla. But at least at 72 I may luck out, his eyesight may be failing and he won't notice.. But here I am , Bariatric God mother or Granny to you all, much life wisdom but trying to better my life like everyone else. We are All Works in Progress, if after my surgery I don't Dance in the Sunlight I will happily Hula Hoop in place, knowing I have a better future and longer life ahead. And until someone tries to throw dirt over my face I will Rock It with All I Got! That's Me Frustr8 the Bold, the comedy relief of BP, I may startle you but I'll never make you yawn! And I love most Everybody!😛👍😛
