  1. I'm going in for surgery on Monday (yay!). I'm wearing a baggy outfit that I'll come back home in, and I'm packing some basics. Spare undies, slipper, basic toiletries (shampoo, face wash, toothbrush/paste, deodorant, comb, makeup), and my Kindle in case I want to read. Oh, and my cell phone and charger. Anything else I can probably get there or have my husband bring to me. I should be in for 2-3 nights. Best wishes on your surgery!

    Youtube Journeys

Just put up my latest vlog on YouTube -- I skipped a week due to traveling, etc. so just wanted to let folks know I hadn't disappeared!
  4. So I have been on the pre-op diet for 4 days now and this morning was my last nutrition visit. I have to say I am hungry but not starving. They weighed me and I am down 6 lbs!! All of my paper work was submitted to insurance today and they are optimistic we will get an answer within a week. That cuts it kinda close. At this point they are telling me I might even have the procedure a day early on the 11th, I guess my surgeon is really booking up that week with April vacation on the week that follows. So I may be the 11th or the 12th as long as the insurance comes through. Getting very excited

    Pre testing?

ReadyNew, Ok, I got my official date! I will be sleeved October 9th!!! I'm very excited AND nervous. I have pre-open on the third. It will consist of meeting with the good ole doc that puts you to sleep, blood draw, 15 min meeting with doctor, 15 min meeting with dietician, and a prince screen to test for tobacco. That's how it is here for the program I am in in Albany, New York with Albany Medical Center. They said between all of it it is about 2-3 hours. I'll keep you updated! Hope all is well! I will be posting my before pictures soon.
  6. So I went today to see the surgeon n got a surgery date for April 8..I'm nervous and excited. I just hope my insurance approves the procedure. Starting my 2 week preop diet tomorrow.
  7. Hey, Yes, I will contact my surgeon on Monday, but until then ... Starting yesterday, after I eat anything (cottage cheese, fat free Soup, etc) I have mild to moderate heart burn. I have never had heartburn before (well, maybe a few times in my life, but nothing consistent like this). A few days ago I was eating pureed refried Beans and I ate 1/2 cup and I was very very full after (this was the first time where I have been "over full" since getting the band). Has anyone had anything like this before? Do you think I have an early slip? I am freaking out completely. I was banded 2 weeks ago, and my band is empty. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

    Soups?

It is weird how so many surgeons are different in what they allow. Mine says liquids only (including shakes) for 3 weeks in phase 1 and then move to phase 2 where I can have like puréed foods for 2 weeks and then soft foods after that.
  9. I got a fill about 2 weeks ago and really am eating egg size meals not because i don't want to eat more , i just can't . The fabulous part of all this is the fact im dropping the lbs fast!! I was at a literal 2 month plateau. Ive gone from 195.5 to 187.6 in less than two weeks ....im impressed and happy!! anything like this happen for you all?? Jennifer

    Soups?

Strained soups were considered full liquids for me which was technically phase 2. Clear (3 days), Full (1.5 weeks), Pureed(2-3 weeks), Soft Solids(4-5 weeks), Regular (8+ weeks on) is how my diet went.

    Soups?

I would ask your surgeon or nutritionist. Phase 1 is different for everybody. My phase 1 lasted an entire week, and was a purely liquid diet. No cream based soups. I couldn't even have protein shakes. I could use a strained soup as long as there were absolutely no chunks. I stuck to broths, sugar free jello, and sugar free liquids. I have read other guidelines where Phase 1 only lasts 48 hours. The patient then moves to Phase 2, which allows cream based soups and protein shakes. It is all determined by your surgeon/nutritionist.
  12. I’m 5 weeks post op and eating solids. All clean proteins, fruit, veg etc. I eat until I’m comfortably full (550 cals daily approx). I drink all my liquids between meals. But I feel like after an hour I’m starting to get hungry by 2 hours, maybe 3 my stomach is starving! Can anyone recommend something that will make me stay full longer? It’s pretty inconvenient lol
  13. Mine has been running low also. I'm 2 1/2 post. I've stopped taking my blood pressure meds for now. I'm keeping records of it until I go to my regular doctor in a few weeks. I go to my surgeon this coming week. I go back to work then too so it may change.
  14. I started walking the day after surgery, just adding distance. Eventually about 3 months out, I started training for a 5k using a free app called couch to 5k. There is a good recipe section on this website as well as a website called World According to Eggface.

    Before surgery weight is 194

I had surgery two weeks ago today in Juarez, MX. The surgery take 40 min to an hour. Keep in mind that the whole time after surgery while in the hospital you will be on IV pain meds. I can honestly say that I was never in pain, maybe discomfort. I was on a plane two days later. For me I use distraction tactics. I try to focus on something that I am looking forward too that is after surgery. So when my mind would wander to the surgery, I would shift back to something else. It worked for me, before you know it you're in recovery. Two mantras that I live by now. This is only temporary & take it one day at a time. Good Luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. Why spend that kind of money when you are already banded? My surgeon says when you stall to go back to a liquid diet for 1 to 2 weeks.
  17. I was on it during the summer. Your only allowed to have 500 calories the first week, and it's basically all protien. I tried it for a week but got so sick of just eating meat I wanted to puke. They give you pills and b12 shots twice a week. I heard it works but I couldn't handle it.

    Got my first fill!

That's good to hear. Most patients take between 3 and 5 fills to obtain effective restriction.

    Question

I am going on 3 yrs out and was wondering if anyone else is having an issue with their stomach locking up on the main incision side when either bending wrong, doing crunches and sorry for the tmi but going to the bathroom? I havent had it checked out but wanted to know who else has experienced this. Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Lets talk about sex baby...

I was active about 2 weeks out but I didn't do missionary because my lover boy is on the heavier side and didn't want to add any pressure on my tummy
  21. Hello, all! I am getting ready to schedule my surgery for sometime in October. I started my "journey" (actually feels a lot like the road to Hell!) in May, 2005. It took a long time for my insurance company to finally deny me for surgery. I will be going to the Mid-West Institute of Bariatric Surgery (Lenexa, Ks.) next week to make my appt. with Dr. Jessie Lopez. Does anyone have any experience with this Doctor or his office? So far, I have had a lot of trouble getting them to return my phone calls when I was trying to make the appt. I will be paying for the surgery on my own---it seems like a LOT of money! BTW-I am 215lbs., 5'4', hoping to get to 130.

    Falling ill...?

No, I have not been sick other than seasonal allergies. As a fellow bandster, I want to stress the importance of taking your Vitamins daily and Protein. You are most likely loosing your hair and sick because of a deficiency. Have your doc check your blood asap. It is no good being thin if your sick. I can send you a list of the blood work my doc does at 1 mth, 3mth, 6mth and yearly post-op. I am not sure what stores are in Australia, but this is what I take daily and I have had normal labs. Thankfully, my doc/nutritionist really educated me on nutrition during this process. They stress 1. Nurtition, 2. Hydration, 3. Weightloss. When I read some post it's like the docs only think about weightloss and fills. 1 Centrum Silver Multi Vitamin in the AM & 1 in the PM 2 Citrical Maxium (citrate calcium) am & 2 pm 1 slow FE (iron) costs more, but doesn't constipate like regular Iron
  23. Just saying thanks to the replies i got when i was stressed about my band, i wrote last month. I did go and see my surgeon, he had no explanation for my lack of restriction. So i got a fill. At the moment i have a 4ml band in place. And when i had my fill, he said once withdrawn and put back in that i had approx 3.4mls in band. i went back in a week as the restriction was the same even after .2mls had been put in, to make the 3.4. i had another fill and to his calculations i now have 3.8 mls in a 4 ml band. I was nervous to take a drink, as i new this was pretty full up. Water went down ok, i had half a cup of mince for tea, that went down ok, i was very careful though. i have lost a furthur 2 kilos in this last 2 weeks, but i train at the gym 5 times a week, i do work and have a family. The restriction is still there but i can eat a toasted sandwich if im careful, and last night i had half a chicken breast fillet and crab meat for dinner, took a while but got through most of it. Im still concerned, i have an appointment on the 19th of march with my surgeon, i will get him to check how much is in the band. Any comments are welcome. I was banned 14th Feb 05 (weight)116kg Today i weigh 88.6kg and have lost 89cm's in total all over. Im not sure how to put up photos on this thing otherwise i would. I live in Australia in the Hunter Valley.

    Questions

Hi there. Contemplation and research are you friends! :-) I'm just over 5 weeks out - I can tell you with all honesty, I don't think about food like I did before surgery. If I crave something, it goes away very quickly - like a fleeting thought. The first few weeks, the drinking of Water, shakes and, if you're allowed, food will consume you. Because you're trying to figure out the balance - when you should have Breakfast, then incorporate a shake, and getting in the water. I have finally hit my stride and it's much easier now - it's just my new normal. Cooking for a family up until this week has been a challenge and I relied a lot on my husband to figure out what he and my son were going to do for dinner. Now that I'm on a somewhat "regular" diet, I don't have to cook two meals. Last night I made roasted chicken and vegetables. We were able to eat the same things. We've even gone out to dinner a few times and I either ate off my husband's plate or had the inside of a taco. I'm also finding some great recipes that are healthy and sleeve friendly that my family enjoys! I bet your family will adapt to the "new" you, whether you tell them about the surgery or not. You're taking your health in your own hands and that's commendable - whether they agree with the decision or not. Just don't fret too much! Happy holidays!

    Day 3 after surgery

I had a morphine drip (which was optional and extra believe it or not) to which I had a button to push for pain post-op. I must say that I was kinda abusing that, as the anesthesia nurses came to check the remaining volume and noticed I had been too button happy .. anyhoot, when they decided to remove my IV when I was clear to drink Water and diluted sports drink, I asked that they keep the morphine in but they refused and took it away. So, my op was at noon on Feb 8th, and I awoke around 4 or 5PM, I had the morphine until the next day around 6PM. After they un-hooked me from the drip stand, I was "weened" from pain medication. the only thing I could feel were my two holes where those rack things went in and the actual larascopic wound around my belly button. But I felt no pain internally by the second day of the op. May be there was some "memory pain" from the gas they pumped in, but for me that was very very minor. But then I'm probably one of your lighter candidates with a pre-op BMI of 36. I figure the heavier you are perhaps the more gas they would have to pump to keep the "ceiling of operation" up and the more pain you would feel post op. The biggest thing I would think for you at this time would be the liquid only diet, which will make you hungry all the time. I know I was for the first week as I average only 500 calories per day and wound up losing nearly 16 lbs in 7 days. Try to drink some un-diluted sports drink which has more calories that might give you a bit more ooomph than I had. I basically did NOT want to move around at all for the first week becuz I knew I had no "go juice" in me from what "they" were giving me (that inluded my mom's strict following of the recommended menu that had zero taste for a whole week before I got strained apple juice and strained clear chicken broth which felt like meals fit for kings at the time compared to the third world prison diet I was getting the first 7 days). Hope that helps!
