    The Husband

Well, this is how I feel about your situation.....You can lose the weight (VSG)and your marriage could fail or you could stay the same weight (NO VSG) and your marriage could fail!!!!! But atleast if you lose the weight you will feel better about yourself! The way weight loss has helped my marriage is......I like getting out the house and having a good time again......no more fights about not having anything to wear out.....And Im starting to feel comfortable being on top again(if you know what I mean)......I found my confidence again and my husband finds that sexy! The way I feel is if he doesn't pay attention and treat my the way I should be, I now have good chance to find someone who will. DO IT FOR YOU! Because there is no guarantee you will stay married either way. Welcome and Best wishes. BTW, take him to you Dr appt. so they can tell him it is not possible to every weigh that much again after having 80% of you stomach removed.

    The Husband

It sounds like insecurity. I know my hubby is afraid that I will not want to be with him after I lose the weight. I don't think people that have never struggled with their weight understand that we do not choose to be overweight. Only 2% of people that are obese can lose the weight and maintain it. That is why wls is our only choice to be healthy. We have all lost the weight and then put it back on. He needs to be a part of the solution not the problem. I am sure the more he puts you down the more you want to eat. Do this for you, if he is not on board may be you are better off without him. Everything happens for a reason. Everyone here will give you the support you need. If you need anything just ask. This is an incredible board and we are lucky to be here
  3. I was sleeved on 4/25. As of Monday I've started walking a 1.5 miles per day on my treadmill. Trying to keep the weight loss going & build back up my energy . Just wondering if anyone else is working out yet?

    Post sleeve help?

I was a single lone ranger in this, so I guess #1, it depends on your work/family/house (lawn work is out for a nearly a month, and no lifting anything over 20 pounds). I don't know your overall health or weight, but I was in good enough shape going in I didn't need any help moving around, but you could be different. On the plus side...YOU DON'T NEED MEALS But your family might, and cooking might not what you are interested in doing when you are on liquids. Some ideas, not instruction since I don't know your exact circumstances. A little more detail about your concerns will help.
  5. So today I experienced my first gain since being banded in Sept. 1.6lbs. I haven't really been doing anything different (maybe a few more mindless Snacks but nothing huge) to where I think a gain ... especially almost 2 pounds... should've occurred. I'm hoping its just Water retention or something.. Anyway, I'm a huge thinker and hypochondriac so I was wondering if someone could help me out here? I highly doubt I ruined my band but I can't stop thinking of the worst. My surgeon says that the solid foods (Proteins, veggies, and carbs) should equal no more than 1 cup of food per meal. My thing is... how do I know if a piece of salmon and some veggies is 1 cup. You can't fit salmon into a measuring cup. I need more of a visual idea... maybe I am eating too much :/ Thanks for any advice!

    Gained weight after medication

Any time post surgery that I've gained I'll just go back to basics. Protein first. Veggies, minimal carbs, more water and more walking. Comes off way easier than before. But i haven't taken gabapentin long enough post surgery to notice a difference tho. Also haven't taken birth control since surgery cause I'm afraid of possible gain. To tell or not tell

There's been quite a bit of dicussion about telling or not telling the world that we are thinking about or had the lab band procedure. I have to say that I am torn about this. I have told my spouse (very supportive as you can read in a previous entry), my daughters (not so supportive), my son (doesn't feel I need it but "whatever you think is right mom) my mom (that's a lot of money that could be spent on a really fun trip) and two people at work (one really positive one with a funny look) My husband says we should shout it from the mountain tops then everyone can be supportive and cheer you on. I am more reserved because I've failed before. I think in the end, we neeed to ignore the rest of the world and decide what is best for us. Not the family, not the hubby, not the kids not everyone else. Perhaps the key is are we trying to "cheat" and think this will be a magic bullet or are we addressing health issues and improving our quality of life? If it's the latter, would we question exercising, taking a necesary medication or going to a physician? I believe lab band should be no different. The difference is that people don't ask about doctor appointments, the medicine we are taking or our exercise regiman. When we start showing weight loss, people will not hesitate to dwell, question or badger. My plan is to take the two weeks off that I am on the liquid diet and at least 2 weeks off after my surgery. Knowing myself, I know that I will have trouble when it will be so obvious that I am having to eat (or drink) differently. I hope this will help me get off to a more positive (and personal) start. On the plus side, I managed to exercise 4 out of 7 days this week. Nothing too taxing, but really trying to start getting into better habits.

  9. I started this Journey officially on January 12th 2016 and was approved for the surgery on February 8th! I'm scheduled for March 8th! I've been overweight all my life and I've reached my peak weight of 358! I do eat healthy but I just eat too much sometimes! I'm mostly nervous because I haven't told anyone besides my mother and one of my coworkers! I'm just glad to be able to kick start my healthy lifestyle! If anyone has any pointers of suggestions please feel free to leave them!

    Emotional wreck

I won’t say I “did it” on my own, but I did lose almost 60 lbs before my surgery on my own. One of my friends asked why I went though with surgery after losing so much weight on my own, and my answer was that I’ve always been able to lose weight, I’ve just never been able to keep it off. Surgery gave me the help I needed to continue going. I would have backtracked by now without surgery, and I’d be continuing to fight an uphill battle because weight loss starts off easy, and gets harder the further you go. The preop 6 month diet isn’t to see if you can do it on your own, it’s the insurance trying to get people to give up so they can disqualify you. (Sorry, but I work with insurance and yes there’s a part that is making sure people are committed etc etc but mostly it’s to reduce costs by weeding people out). Give yourself the time you need, and push out that surgery date if you want. You’re the customer, you tell them when you want to do this. But really strongly consider if you are truly committed and confident you can do this on your own and maintain it for life, or if you’re nervous about surgery. It’s fine to be nervous! I was terrified. But almost 6 months and 120+ lbs later, I am so proud of the commitment I made to give myself another chance at life.
  13. Surgery date 5/28, SW 244, CW 188. Been in a 2 week stall, but I seem to loose for a couple weeks then stall, but loose inches. At least that is how it feels. I have gone from a Very tight 18 to a comfortable 14, tops have gone from. 2x to a large! hair started coming out last month, I am trying to not stress at the handfuls (at least it feels that way!) that come out when I wash it. I am not the best at exercising and I know my weight loss would probably be faster. It will come! Pics are my journey so far... . Best thing I could have done, ever!

    Emotional wreck

Good morning. Today I am supposed to start my 2 week pre op diet. I have struggled hard the past 2 days and am a wreck. I even think about the surgery and I cry so hard I can’t breath. Let me go back a little bit. My insurance does not cover the surgery so I am paying myself. That also means that it all is happening really fast. My initial consult was March 5 and surgery is May 6. Also no prerequisite were required like a psych evaluation. I started calorie counting and exercising in my own in February and since I have lost 24 pounds on my own. From 291 to 267. I never had the 6 month wait with working with a dietian to see if I could do it on my own. This is the first time I’m trying to change the problem not bandaid it with weight loss pills. And it looks like it is working but will be slower than surgery. I’m on track for 10 pounds a month. I have no underlying conditions such as blood pressure or diabetes. This surgery is scaring the poop out of me and I’m so close to backing out. Has anyone been here and done it on there own? I feel like there is no part of this I can mentally handle. I can handle tracking my food and losing slowly.

    Emotional wreck

Only you know yourself. For me at two weeks out I had doubts too but I knew that I had lost weight (even a great deal of it) on my own many times but I always gained it back (plus some). You have to make the best decision for yourself. The statistics say that the chances for someone at our weight (that qualify for this surgery) losing all the weight by diet and exercise alone and actually keeping it off are slim but there are some people that do. Only you know your circumstances, would you be healthy and happy if you lost some but not all of the weight? Also, I would say if you really are concerned that you could slow down the process (ask for a different surgery date) and even ask for referrals for the nutritionist and psychiatrist or psychologist they normally use. There is no reason that they should object to you seeing those people on your own if you think it will help you make your decision. I think most people will tell you that they had some doubts around the time of the preop diet though. Only you know if they are small doubts or real ones.

    Emotional wreck

I agree with what others have said that you may want to slow down your process. Just because they gave you a surgery date doesn't mean it's set in stone. I'm also paying for my own surgery with no insurance but I still completed my program the same way I would with insurance just a little faster. I did all the pre-op classes, met with dietician, met with behavioral consult etc. I know how to lose weight the healthy way, I think most of us on here do. I've lost weight on my own several times in my life but it's very difficult for me to maintain. I don't view this surgery as a solution but it's a tool that's going to help me stick to the healthy choices without being starving hungry all the time or fighting crazy binges. If you've never even tried to lose weight on your own before you may find yourself resentful in a few years when you can eat the way you used to, wondering if you could have just done it on your own and still be 'normal'. I spent a long time looking down on WLS thinking I could do it on my own before accepting that my body simply cannot maintain that on it's own for whatever reason. You may need to take some more steps in your journey to get to a place of acceptance and not one of fear.
  17. My PCP favors GB more, but only because she had that surgery herself. The surgeon I see seems to me to also favor GB. With him, I think it has more to do with the rapid weight loss that tends to occur in the 1st 6-12months afterward. In the end, though, they both advised that it was my decision. I decided on the LB  and am still going through my pre-op phase. I hope that with my last two appointments coming up, that by the end of June I will find out for sure whether I am approved and get a date.
  18. I was sleeved on Jan 21, 2013 starting weight was 298 down 48 pounds so far. Before seeing these pics side by side I would have considered myself a "slow loser" but now; Wow.....what a difference. Best decision ever...excited to continue on my journey.
  19. Well, yogurt is for me the best alternative as u mentioned. Any idea of target weight loss % per month?
  20. Welcome!!!! Congrats on the weight loss. This is a great forum that I used pre-surgery to get some good advice and encouragement. Overall there are a lot of great people here and it's great to encourage others as well.

  22. Hi guys!!! I was on a losing streak for a while and made my thanksgiving day goal early! Now I am stalled! I went up 2 lbs and have been losing a few oz.'s at time. I wanted to hit onderland by christmas, but, looks like I may have to move it to new years!!! But, I am so thankful for my sleeve. I am able to eat everything and more than I thought I was gonna be able to. which I am kinda greatful for too, because one of my biggest fears was that I wouldnt be able to eat at all. Anywho! People are starting too notice the weight coming off (74 since I started my pre op diet) and I feel good about myself. I am 4 months out and still have a long way to go, but, I am so happy. I wish I had done this sooner!!! No regrets!!! except for the hair loss! LOL!, but, I'm dealing! But, I discovered Joan rivers hair powder. It works awesome. I have thinning hair at my part and crown, this powder stuff hides my shiny scalp and boosts my confidence!!! Yay!

That is wonderful, congrats on the 27 pound weight loss. I was also banded on the 21st of May and I lost 20 pounds. My nutritionist said I can eat pureed foods like chicken, egg salad, tuna, and so on. Well anyway good luck and way to go.

    Need a buddy or buddies.

Hi Oasis, I read your second to last post and had to re-read it a couple of times. You are the same height as me, the same SW weight and same BMI! I went to Belgium through ECFS and had Philip Vanden Borre as my surgeon. Faultless care right from my first contact, surgery on 21Oct '15 and through to post op. I am now 50lbs down, feel WONDERFUL. I only wish that I had done it years ago. I am wearing really fun clothes, getting great compliments, and getting loads fitter. I swim half a mile most mornings and then walk the dogs for anything between 2-5 miles. I'm 60 in September and want to be at goal weight by then. I've got just over 30lbs to go so should manage it. Don't have any fears or doubts about having VSG. Just go for it! Life just keeps getting better and better the more lard that I lose.
