  1. Hi. I'm in CT and I just had this procedure done at the beginning of June. It's the fourth summer of post-Band cosmetic "work" for excess skin removal after losing 100 pounds since 2003. I undertook none of this lightly. 2007 was a TT, 2008 was a breast lift, 2009 was a thigh lift, and this time was brachioplasty with a thigh revision. I used the same CT surgeon for all of the procedures. I am a major whiner and right now I'm still whining about this one. But in general I've been pleased with the results from my other procedures and I hope for similar results with this one. Right now, it's still a little rough going. If you would like more details, and more specifics on the surgeon (facility, costs, etc.), please PM me.
  2. I had a revision on December 28,2015.It is the best decision. No more vomiting, gerd, weight gain, slippage, port site pain or protrusion etc.My RNY is great.Keep in mind the weight loss is slower with revisions but I feel great. My cravings for sweets are gone and I have never dumped.I feel so much better.Just went for my 3 month blood test this past week. Will keep you guys posted... I feel great!!!

    Weight lost question

Your weight loss depends on a lot of factors including your pre-op weight. The less you have to lose the slower the weight will come off. Also, you had a revision and revisions tend to lose slower. That doesn't mean it's not going to come off, it'll just likely come off a lot slower than you would like. Also, you may still have some fluid from your surgery. From my own experience it took about 10 days to get rid of that fluid so give yourself a few more days and I'm sure you'll drop a few more pounds. Congrats on your new surgery and I wish you the best!

    Lap Band Or Sleeve

Check out my name! I am one of the million who have wicked horror stories PLUS my two daughters have the band still with no problems BUT with very little weight loss. That is a run on sentence and I could go on and on. Check the revision section and you'll see.

    Lap Band Or Sleeve

there are many posts on this topic under "band to sleeve" you may want to check there. I had a revision on September 10th and it was the best decision I every made. I wouldn't recommend the band at all, it is not a forever and I believe will have to be removed eventually.

  8. TijuanaPlication

    Recovery/Hunger

The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) cuts out the main area that produces grhelin but the body still produces grhelin in other areas and these areas can bring hunger levels to more or less what they were pre-surgery. VSG gives you the highest chance of resolving hunger, but it doesn't resolve it for everyone - it's just that your odds are better. Plication hasn't resolved my hunger issues (I just eat a little less in a sitting but not a lot - my restriction hasn't really been sufficient to produce much weight loss). You'll find some people suggesting taking an antacid to help with hunger - although according to the medical profession this shouldn't affect hunger. In any case I did take an antacid for a couple of weeks, but it didn't help me. If you qualify for bypass then you also qualify for the Duodenal Switch (DS). VSG is part one of a 2 stage DS op (it's regularly done in one stage though). If the VSG doesn't provide sufficient weight loss or resolve your hunger, revising to a DS should still be an option. DSers have a high Protein and generally high fat diet (some have to experiment to find a level that suits them). Most DSers are satiated with a high protein and high fat diet - they malabsorb 80% fat, 50% protein and some complex carbs (they absorb 100% of simple carbs). Please don't go with the RNY gastric bypass, as it's really difficult to revise from this surgery. Also with RNY you only malabsorb calories for 2 years but you malabsorb nutrients forever! Remember Carnie Wilson when she was looking fab and posed for Playboy and now she's back over 200lbs (better than the >300lbs she started at, but she's only 5"3). BTW that wasn't a dis to Carnie, with RNY you just get the tables turned on you around 2 years out and that's why a lot RNYers seek revisions. BTW I believe that no stomach is removed with RNY, it's simply stapled off and is therefore likely to have a similar effect on hunger to plication IMO (ie when the stomach is full it's stretched and that creates the full sensation but then when empty you'll get hungry). HTH

    Sleeve or band

My final weigh-in is May 3rd. I'm going to let him know then that I've decided on the sleeve. Between the stories here and then general research I believe it's best to do the sleeve. I also see how many people are having problems getting approval for revision surgeries, I rather avoid that problem. I'm hoping for a quick approval approved a date for the middle/end of May. August banders

Each person is very different. I was banded in February 2012 and only lost 25lbs and then over the next two years gained 75lbs. Had lots of issues finding the green zone, gerd etc. Finally found new doctor and ended up doing revision to Gastric sleeve July 1, 2015. I have lost 42lbs since surgery. My dad had lapband and shortly after I did in 2012 and he lost well over 100 lbs and has kept it off. I just say choose the surgery for you and not just due to one be permanent or temporary as I did originally. Each surgery will have pluses and minuses. Good luck with what you decide!

  13. I came across this site long after my Lapband surgery looking for some support with complications. I belong to a Facebook group for those dealing with regain and revision. I joined that group when my band complications made it pretty clear I would be losing my tool. Other online forums aren't as active as this one, so I joined. I'm a little discouraged, since the banders here seem to be closed minded about hearing about late complications of banding. I get why, since I was a very active proponent of banding, had great success and shot down anyone who dared say that bands = long term trouble. One thing I've noticed in researching my complications is that male banders don't seem to have as many serious complications. I have a family member who is doing well almost 5 years post op and he hasn't had one problem. He is, however sympathetic to my situation and has done a bit of research on complications and acknowledges that they do happen much more frequently than stated in the manufacturer's disclosure. There is a strong mindset within this community that following a set of rules for eating and drinking will ensure that one will suffer no serious complications. The problem with this is that there isn't just one set of "rules", every surgeon has their own technique, surgical finesse, different staff and rules for living with a band. Every patient is unique too. We come with our own special set of circumstances, lifestyle, unique physiology and baggage. There are just too many variable factors involved to say that we will be successful by following our doctors rules. I think that anyone who has a band and is successful AND complication free is very, very fortunate. I am truly happy for them. I know what losing 75% or more of excess weight can mean, I know the thrill of appetite suppression! being satisfied with 1/4 cup of food, fitting into smaller, more stylish clothes means. I know about having less joint pain, fitting in chairs, airplane seats and amusement park rides. I also know the pain, fear and anxiety of serious complications. My doctors were completely perplexed by my case. Fortunately for me, a very qualified esophageal specialist practices near me and knew what was up. He's treated and consulted on many cases like mine and is currently researching the effect of Lapband on the esophagus. Unfortunately, I have severe damage to my stomach, esophagus and it seems, to my heart that I cannot revise. I'm working hard to maintain WL and regain my health. I'm also encouraging everyone considering WLS to fully investigate and research possible complications. It is my mission to warn about complications that happen much more frequently and are much more serious than is admitted within this community. I won't cave in to those who call me silly, a fear mongering bully, exaggerator, or that I'm trying to scare newbies away. I'm none of that. I've seen both sides of this situation. I hope you never do.
  14. As long as you're losing, you are doing fine. I'm 9 months out from a band to bypass revision and still can only eat 650-850 calories a day. My metabolism is slow from years of dieting and having the lapband plus genetics. My dietician says when I reach maintenance I will need to eat 1,200 calories to maintain. So it's different for different people with different metabolisms and levels of activity. As long as you're losing, you must be doing it right for you.
  15. Your opinions are needed: I've been revising my thoughts on what a reasonable goal weight or goal weight range, would be. How did you decide? For example, I've quite publicly struggled just to nudge my BMI under 30 so I'd no longer be 'obese'. OK, cool, got that one done, I'm at a BMI of 29 and some change, but I'm no where near being where I want to be. But how do we decide where that is? I am still well, not obese, but still overweight. I look a lot better, but want to look GREAT. From my original LapBand surgeon's goal - I would have been like 20# from what he considered to be a goal weight. Don't get me wrong, I would be delighted to lose 20 more pounds, but this man didn't think I'd even get near that weight. Granted I've been banded a zillion years (OK, five) and I've crawled to get toward goal. So even back when I was 10# heavier than my current weight, he felt like I looked great, and would probably not lose any more weight with the band. We disagreed on that point. Now, I have a new fill doctor who thinks I might be able to get closer to the Finish Line, and I'm losing again. But he's left it up to me to determine what that is. Help!:phanvan A BMI of 25 would no longer be overweight, but just 'normal weight.' To get to a BMI of 25 I'd need to lose like 30# more pounds. Honestly I don't know if my body would let me peel off 30 more - but that would take me to my lightest weight as an adult. I'd be officially very thin - I don't even know what size but I'd be a serious single digit then. If I got to that weight, and was still healthy, oh goodness, I'd be in total shock. :faint: So I'd sure like to know if other people set their goal weights based on when they thought they looked good, their high school graduation weight or a number a doctor set. Does anyone use BMI charts to help them decide? Is anyone else aiming for a "normal weight range" or am I being ridiculous? Weigh in (pun intended) with your thoughts: Did you pick a number, a clothes size, or a BMI or range - for your goal? Tell us. Happy Band (And Life) Journeys To All...
  16. I'm 10 days post op and have already lost 20lbs since starting my preop diet...which was only one week preop. I had the band to sleeve revision and the sleeve seems to be wonderful so far. I never lost weight with the band, but I can immediately tell a difference or lack there of an appetite. You'll see this a lot, the sleeve is like having a band that actually works. I wish you the best of luck.

    Posting Reality Check

Here's a good example of what I'm talking about. Recently I read a post of a poor woman who had to have multiple surgeries because her Realize band came apart at the port. She tried to contact the manufacturer to ask them to pay for the surgical revision as the problem stemmed from their defective, and already recalled product. The manufacturer declined. In her post she said she sought the help of lawyers. One of the first replies from posters was a comment on the fact that people are sue happy. She never said she was going to sue. She was simply seeking help to get the manufacturer to pay for the surgery as her doctor would certainly charge her. Several people made comments about lawyers and lawsuits. I could tell this poor woman was misunderstood. She was simply seeking help and advice from lawyers and frankly I think she actually does deserve some compensation for lost wages and suffering but she just wants her band to work. The point is, people flamed her for no reason which is the premise for this original post of this thread. Support, answers, sharing no matter what the situation....not negativity and flaming.
  18. Welcome. I don't know much about the sleeve. I was revised from lap band to RNY last week. So far so good. I hope you get some answers to your questions from those in your situation. Again Welcome

    Getting Depressed

Right now you are still in the healing phase. If you lose any weight before your fill is a bonus. You're doing great so far, so don't get discouraged. I did the same thing (and was delayed another month because I had to get a port revision). What you are going through is normal. Hang in there and follow your doctor's orders. It'll get better.

    Revision surgery 9/8/2021

I had my revision surgery on 9/8, and the gas pain was insane. It took three days for it to subside. Shortly after that, I had a sharp pain near one of my incisions, which has finally started to go away as of yesterday. I have lost 13 lbs, and I feel pretty good. I plan to keep this thread updated for people who are thinking of revising.
