Very depressed and lost
James Marusek replied to wardahwilliam's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of the individuals in my bariatric surgery support group went from a band to bypass a few years ago and he was very pleased with the results. His band was wearing through his stomach lining and had to be removed immediately. Because of the scar tissue, his bypass was a little bit smaller than most and as a result, it limited his meal size a little but he was fine with it. -
gastric bypass reversal

"Bariatric Surgery Reversibility: What You Need to Know" https://obesitynewstoday.com/bariatric-surgery-reversibility/ "Gastric Bypass surgery is considered a permanent operation but can be reversed for medical problems only. The risks of a reversal are extremely high." -- Shawn Garber, M.D. Can Bariatric Surgery Be Reversed? Yes—but should it be? "Yes, but it's dangerous and impractical to do so. Neither procedure ends with the removal of any parts from the body, so they can both be undone, at least in theory. But going back to reoperate on tissue that's already been subjected to surgery increases the risks of bleeding and damage to the structures being repaired. (That's over and above the dangers associated with any surgery—like blood clots, infection, and injury to adjacent organs.) Scar tissue from previous work makes it harder for surgeons to see and access the normal tissue. Getting suture lines or staple lines to heal properly after a repeat operation is a challenge as well. There are some more specific reasons why it's not a good idea to reverse a bariatric surgery. A patient who undergoes a gastric bypass may never be able to regain a fully functional digestive tract. In the original operation, doctors divide the stomach and cordon off most of its volume with staples or a plastic band; they also reroute the stomach, connecting it to the middle of the small intestine so that fewer calories can be absorbed. To reverse all this later, surgeons must divide the stomach and intestine where they had been sewn together and then rejoin them in the original spot with a surgical stapling device. But the restored configuration won't be exactly the same as it was before the bypass. For one thing, it's impossible to mend several nerves that help with normal gastric function. As a result of these permanent changes, a patient who chooses to undo his bypass may experience post-op gastroesophageal reflux disease." http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2010/02/can_bariatric_surgery_be_reversed.html Is Gastric Bypass Surgery Reversible? http://gastricbypass.surgery/gastric-bypass-surgery-reversible/ -

OP: I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It sounds complicated and confusing. I would get a second opinion from another bariatric practice that has extensive revision experience. They’re the best ones to guide you and provide accurate medical assessment, not us random folks on the Internet. Good luck. -
I'm so glad to have found this site. As I'm sure all of you know, this is such a journey full of literally every emotion all at once and sometimes one can feel alone at times going through the process like I do, at times. Finding somewhere to talk to everyone about my own personal journey where there is no judgment and nothing but support is priceless. Many of my visits at the bariatric weight control center urged me to try out their in-person support groups, and I definitely would go if it wasn't over an hour away from my house as it is - and all of you guys have been amazing at being a support group and, even though I'm still new here, I want to thank you all. I've seen nothing but positive comments and feedback from everyone so far. Ever since I knew I was taking this journey I've become almost obsessed with watching testimonials on youtube and reading success stories that I felt like I was part of almost a sisterhood/brotherhood/family of people (sounds silly, I'm sure lol). But it's true - everyone here will know at least in some way, shape, or form what we're each going through and that's a very awesome thing to be part of a community of. I do have a boyfriend who is supportive of my decision, but much of this process I feel he is not understanding of and I will even be at the hospital alone because he will have to be home watching my son before surgery and after and knowing I Have you guys to reach out to helps a lot. I rambled, I do that sometimes lol. Maybe it's because I'm emotional, or I've had my last cup of coffee (I'm giving it up a few days before my pre op diet begins, to get a head start), but thank you all for being totally awesome

And if you need emotional. support, we are always here on Bariatric Pal. You are never all alone as long,as you have friends and you are among a bunch, here. Reach out whenever you need us, okay?👉😝👈🌈

7 months post VSG I did a Sprint Triathlon
Frustr8 replied to Espen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
At my age I would doubt I could even do a quarter- marathon, but maybe, just maybe I could. There was a time when I felt defeated when I hit roadblocks in my Bariatric Journey, but I overcame that and even if it is. a dream, dreams do come true with a little help. And surgery, may help that dream come true. New 🌎worlds to conquer, more places to go, don't count me out for life is not over yet!😝 -
Better tasting chewable vitamin recommendations???
passportx2 replied to LL44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am using bariatric advantage dark cherry chews. As far as vitamins go it is the best tasting so far and I have tried about 5 different ones. My nutritionist said after the first month no more flintstones as they do not have everything your body needs but they are fine for the first few weeks. -

June Sleevers Lets Get Excited!!!
MrsLingo replied to gully90's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@churchgirl I used to be on weight watchers and The foods I ate we can’t eat as a Bariatric patient. I’m 6 weeks and I still use the cups and measure my meat (protein) because thats all we really can have is protein. Our stomach can only hold up the most is 3 ounces of meat. However, I can only hold 2 ounces. Now when I eat veggies and protein I can consume more, so I’m guessing that why she’s doesn’t want you to worry about counting points because you may focus on the other foods rather than protein. If you can just try measuring for keeping track maybe that will help. My doctor said the same about protein shakes but that’s how I get the most protein. In the morning I use two scoops of Dutch chocolate isopure, 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter and chia seeds which is - little over 65g of protein. Then lunch and dinner I’m a carnivore. -
Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
Starr2015 replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello again everyone! So here is an update. Just finished my pre-testing. 1 WEEK TO GO!!! I am down to 146 kg which is ~322 lbs. From ~350 lbs the week before, day 1 of the pre-bariatric diet. Thank you for the support and my griping about the diet and concerns. I do not know if I hit ketosis... I did sneak an american cheese slice and rotisserie chicken yesterday...but otherwise 4 shakes and cabbage soup x2 with some ice and sugar free jello. I guess because I used to drink soda and juices and eat a ton of carbs, this is working. I am still having some bumps with my medications that different doctors do not want to advocate for to get them to write the prescription (lovanox), but that is just a bump... and I may freak out by Wednesday if not resolved. Surgery so far still on for the 6th... -

I have complained before but nothing seems to have happened. As an example I will be having surgery September 5th, I cannot get it to enter. Yet it says I had surgery in 2014 and I wasn't even active on Bariatric Pal at that time and I can't delete that. I'm about, ready to close each posting with all my facts over and over un

Hello. I managed not to lose hair when I was sleeved in May of 2013. I am 5’1 and had a BMI of 35. My weight was 184. I have lost over 60lbs not including the additional 10lbs that I had lost in 2015 due to brain surgery. Before and after my 2013 Bariatric Sleeve surgery, I took the standard Biotin along with prenatal vitamins. I also took something else after the surgery that I believe made a difference: Ashwagandha. It is an adaptogen that lowers cortisol and stress bringing balance to the body. Bariatric surgery and the aftermath is extremely stressful to the body causing Telogen Effluvium (hair loss). Ashwagandha has many other uses. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center notes it’s benefits on their web site. I waited apprehensively for the hair loss and thinning to begin. Nothing really out of the ordinary happened. I even let my bob grow below my shoulders that first year. I have done more damage myself to my hair being a high lift blonde having my regrowth done every two weeks. In May of 2015, I tore my ACL and also hit my head. Over the next month I became sicker and sicker. The doctors diagnosed a sinus infection. They were wrong. I had a large subdural hematoma with midline brain shift and herniation. Almost a month later that June, I had to have an emergency, life saving craniotomy. The neurosurgeon for some reason didn’t shave the whole side of my head like he normally would have done; just a rather large strip. After getting out of ICU and Acute Rehab, I started taking Ashwagandha again fearing my hair would fall out and I would be unable to part my hair (a bob again) on the opposite side to cover the huge hole that I was left in my head. Even with a traumatic brain injury, the subsequent stress from it that still continues even today, my hair did not fall out. I have been blessed in so many ways. Ashwagandha can thin the blood. Do not take it before surgery for this reason and wait until you are through with your blood thinners after. Ashwagandha naturally contains iron which of course is beneficial. Do a little research and speak with your physician. I don’t know for sure if it was the Ashwagahnda that help prevent or minimize hair loss after both surgeries, but I thought I would pass on my positive experiences with it. I still use it for stress. Good luck.

Struggling with soft foods
Born in Missouri replied to Kimber628's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It appears that nothing you eat is appetizing. Eggs. Just the word makes me uneasy. Applesauce, cottage cheese. Ho-hum. I tried some tuna. Ate a small amount. I have a lot of salmon filets, but the smell is such a turn off. Most anything out of a can is blaghh. I can handle yogurt, too, but really... I can't just keep having yogurt. How are you able to meet your protein and fluid requirements? I know you said by shakes, but how are you able to keep them down? Two drinks and I'm done. I have an appointment with my doctor today. I plan to talk about my poor protein/fluid intake. The horrible cramping in my right leg. How did this post turn into a rambling on about myself?! I hesitate to say that your concern is psychological. When it comes to women, the first thing that mostly male health professionals seem to conclude is that it's all in our heads. We've even conditioned ourselves to believe that we're probably screwy in the head somehow. When is your next doctor appointment? Is your bariatric team receptive to patient concerns or are you treated like an inconvenience? I sometimes dread calling because the reception staff up front (aka the gatekeepers) want to know why I'm calling, yet they don't know squat about even basic medical terminology. Go figure. -

I will be having an RnY September 5th but I am still a pretty nice person. -
Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia
TexanGal replied to manleygirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have Barrett's Esophagus with dysplasia so I had an ablation of the pre-cancer cells in an EGD scope. My gastroenterologist and PCP and surgeon all said the best way to prevent it from recurring was with a partial gastrectomy (basically a RNY/GB). I also have a BMI in the lower 30s so only qualified for insurance b/c it was a way to prevent Barrett's and the risk of cancer. My surgery is on Wednesday (Aug. 1) and my surgeon is a bariatric surgeon. I also have a hiatal hernia, but it's smaller. They will repair that with my GB. Good luck! -

I had A Fundolipaction 12 years ago to repair a Hiatal hernia. It came undone & forced my esophagus into an L shape & 1/2 of my stomach was above my diaphragm. I had a bypass 2 months ago. My BMI is in the 30’s. My dr made my stomach a little bigger & didn’t bring as much of my intestines up. He isn’t a Bariatric Dr. He’s a Thorasic/Esophagus dr. -

Bariatric advantage chewy bites are AMAZING. -
Each bariatric team has its own rules. Contact your team & ask specifically why no black coffee. Advocate for yourself. If they give you an answer you don't like or understand, challenge them. Remember that what happens in your home is ultimately up to you. Good luck! You are not alone.

I need help with taking vitamins!!! PLEASE give me some feedback!
Frustr8 replied to Dfox1984's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
A lot of Bariatric professionals DON'T LIKE GUMMIES! Why? Look at the label- the first ingredient is corn syrup, if you are just coming off a carbohydrate addiction is THAT a GOOD IDEA? My surgeon or NUT would say NO NO, BAD LITTLE FRUSTR8! -
Yeah - my dietician wanted me to start it 2 weeks prior to surgery. At least I have a fairly decent diet though. I have to have 4 meal replacement shakes a day (HMR 70) and a lean Bariatric style dinner (similar to what they sell on this site) and 64oz of water a day. Sounds easy enough but maaaaan will I miss my coffee lol. I gave it up 3 months ago for about a month then I fell back and had a cup here and there. But on early work mornings like today is when I’ll really miss it the most.

Better tasting chewable vitamin recommendations???
djvalade replied to LL44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Check out Bariatric Fusion! It is one of only a few complete vitamins that includes calcium, B12 and the required mix of vitamins and minerals. It's available in 5 or 6 flavored tabs. It is taken 4 times a day. I had my Gastric bypass RNY surgery on May 2, 2018 and I've been very satisfied with this product!
