  1. Hi all! I'm going for my first consultation with to see if I'm eligible to have a revision surgery from Lapband to Sleeve and I'm concerned about my BMI. Right now, my BMI is 34, and I know my insurance will cover the surgery if the revision is medically necessary. I'm having the worst experience with the band (chest pain, GERD, stuck with everything, vomiting, etc). I was banded 3 years ago and I lost 19 pounds with the band in some point, mostly because I was unable to passed food, but as soon as my band got deflated due to complications, I gained all the weight back. I still have high cholesterol, POS and insulin resistance. Anyone have had a revision done with a "lower BMI" in Arizona? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. even though u have been eating bad stuff from time to time..are u still seeing the weight come off consistently??? if u are then maybe ur eating the bad stuff in moderation...which is what we are supposed to eventually learn with the band...right?? and from what it looks like u been droppin what....10lbs a month or something??? or did u loose a lump sum amount in one mnth? either way ur doing good...i know this is hard..i havent got my band yet, but im already setting myself for the rough times....but yes i agree with u..u probably need to kick ur butt back on track, but if ur loosing while eating a not so healthy meal, i would continue to eat those foods, BUT only in moderation...like once a week or something...i see on ur ticker u got 36 lbs more to go..so im projecting u will get to it...before year end....i bet u!! lol before u know it, it will be october and you'll be pushing 160 lbs....

    Getting Started

Hi Mark- I too had to do the 6 month thing- and I do believe they took my starting weight and my 2 year weight history (not pretty, LOL). My insurance turned out to be pretty easy- but I was very on top of it. For the 6 month thing, make your appointments around the same day each month and DO NOT SKIP a month or they'll start you over!!! And see the same person each time. I had a high bmi- just over 50- and only lost a few lbs during my 6 months- not really trying, not really not trying, if you know what I mean. I was banded on 1/26/12 and have lost 61 lbs so far. I follow the "rules," for the most part (really have to eat slower though, that's a struggle), and I am a dedicated exerciser now. It is the best thing I've ever done, I feel that I will be successful this time, not only losing but in actually keeping it off!!!
  4. sorry everyone but I have to vent before I do something stupid, I've been doing nothing but jumping through hoops for a month now working towards getting my sleeve, I was penciled in for the 16'th of April, according to the scheduler, very doable as long as "I" did everything on time. well I did my part, the scheduler on the other hand has dropped the ball, all she had to do was request a "weight history" from my PCP, she had all the paperwork and consent forms signed at our first meeting back in the end of Feb., it took her a whole month to request a simple form. I called her simply to see if the 16'th is still doable as my wife and I have to schedule vacation time for the surgery, not an easy task for her. now, she won't return my voice mails, I've called her direct line about 2 dozen times and she NEVER answers her phone, I've left her 3 messages over the last 1 1/2 weeks and nothing. that kind of stuff REALLY BENDS ME OUT OF SHAPE, in my last message a few minutes ago, I gave her until this afternoon to call me back or I was going to collect all my records and find a new doctor. I mean, how hard is it to pick up a phone and make a quick call to someone? what the hell is wrong with the medical professions these days, what gives them the right to decide their time is the only time thats valuable ???? stupid arrogant asses. OK, vent over, now I need a stiff drink !!!!!!!!!

    Shaky?

Yes it sounds like ur iron or sugar is low like mine. I have not lost much weight at all. I had my band removed in December 2013 and sleeved March 2014 and only lost 34 pds and gained back 13 pds. Now I've learned I'm battling hypoglycemia. I worked out hard over the past few years watched my fat intake and now I'm told I'm not getting enough fat in and to stop working out. Been battling dehydration for over year. I get headaches and acid feeling from my stomach which triggers headaches. I really regret this surgery. All of them
  6. 8th october is the date bmi 38.6 high blood pressure and recently glucose intolerance. A bit anxious but more excited to get rid of excess weight.

    10 days post op

WOW thats great weight loss. Im jealous. Congrats!
  8. I have to admit I AM A SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW loser but I am one and I "should" be proud. I went to my appointment yesterday and I was feeling kind of scared becasue well although I feel better and like I lost tons of weight (I am sure it just shifted) but over all I felt better. I only lost 8lbs. For a total of 47lbs in 8 months. What depressed me is seeing people at the months I have are further out like 100lbs or more and that depresses me somewhat. I look for the reason/excuses now, I didn't get restriction until later December or January. I have the realize band. But at the same time I am jealous of everyone elses success and all the while I should be proud of my own success but I can't find myself giving myself a pat on the back!!!! Why am I like this? Well just a small vent there I know I will get there becasue well I just have to!!!!! Just wanted to announce that there is another 8lbs gone hopefully forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Motivation and constistency

Hi- I feel really stuck and I need help. I don't know how to stay consistently motivated. I've had my band for 2.5 years lost about 80 lbs but always go back to my comfort-food I want to avoid my surgeons appt on Tuesday because IM so ashamed. All I do is yo yo the same 3 lbs for the last year. IM seeing a therapist but honestly there's,not enough time in the session for everything. How can I really stick to this? Please I am really asking for responses. I just quit smoking so that's another demon down and I also pull out my hair(anxiety disorder) so it feels like whack-a mole when one gets, better the other gets, worse. I really want to lose this weight. I have been known to self sabotage IM putting this out there.. Please tell me how I can stay motivated and consistent. Thanks I really appreciate it in advance

    Stalled

I would stop dieting and worrying about what you eat for at least a week. Give your body a break. Then count calories or points or whatever. I think this will shake your body up and get you moving again. Edited to add: You aren't far from goal. This is where it gets hard. Hang in there! Two suggestions: 1. Make a list of all the reasons you decided to get healthier. 2. Make a list of all the positive changes since losing weight.

    Undecided and Nervous

i'm 2.5 years post-op and i have to be honest with you... in the beginning it's hard. right after your surgery (the first 2 weeks or so) you won't be hungry at all and it will seem impossible to get in all the required Protein but as your stomach heals after the surgery, your hunger will return and since your band will not be filled you will enter what is known as "Bandster Hell" because you're banded but have no restriction and all the familiar hunger pains will be there. you might not lose any weight the first month after surgery so that can bring on depression. after a fill or 2 you'll feel the restriction and that's when the work really begins... for me, one of the the hardest parts has been knowing when to stop eating. your band will tell you when its had enough but your brain tells you to keep eating because it tastes SO good. if you listen to the band, you'll be fine. if you listen to your brain, you'll throw up. the second hardest parts is dealing with the foods your band will no longer tolerate. for me, i can no longer eat bread... which includes pizza (my most favorite food EVER). i also can't eat hamburger or popcorn... other favorite foods. after time, you learn to adapt your eating habits. while i can't eat the bread from the pizza but i can eat the cheese and toppings which is the best part anyway. i still crave burgers and get extremely jealous when a friend or family member orders one but i don't like the consequence i have to face if i DO try to eat one. you become so much more in tune with your body that its amazing. i went from wearing baggy mostly black clothes to proudly showing off my curves with bold colors. i love the compliments i get. i love shopping now! i love feeling healthy which makes me HAPPY! it's a difficult journey but my happiness is worth it!

    9 Months Post-op, 60 Pounds Down

I want to thank you for posting this "slow loser" thing you have because I have it too. I was begining to think I was the only person this happened too. (Very unrealistic.) Anyway I am out 8 months and I have not lost or gained any weight since my 6 month check up. 185 all the time. Some days 185.2 then 185.6 or 185 something else! Very tired of seeing that number. I have tried sooooooooooo many different things to jump-start this and nothing helps. I refuse to stay at 185 for the rest of my life. It will not happen. Going to talk to a psychlogist next week to see what he says. So maybe he can see something I cant. But again thanks for posting.
  14. Some of the best success stories are second-time-around success stories. This encourages me that I can always try again and get back on track with my band. Let's face it. Many of us have lost a big chunk of weight in the past, only to start gaining again and then giving up. To see folks here shake off the "can'ts" and get back to basics and succeed at it is truly inspiring. And brave. Thanks for sharing.
  15. Congrats! When is your nutrition class? Mine is on the 17th. I am so excited, yet nervous and looking forward to getting to a healthy weight and off my meds!
  16. Hi Monica: I was nervous about having another surgery. I have had 11 or 12. surgeries..so many that I have lost count. We joke in my family that I should get the next one free. :-) Anyway, this was a last resort. When I was younger...as a child, teenager, and twenty-something adult, I never had a weight problem. I jogged, lifted weights, and had a very active life. (I am 5'6" and started at 251) But something happened after the birth of my second child (26 yr). I could not lose the weight and I did not have time to jog or lift weights. My family life trumped my health. For the last 19 years I have struggled with weight gain and loss. I have been on diet after diet. So when I heard about gastric procedures I began to do the research. I still wonder what if this one fails too. But I have the support and the tools to make this work. I do not regret my decision. And I have no doubt you will not regret having the procedure. Good luck!
  17. Hi Monica, Many people here have been right where you are. I was banded on 12/13 in Monterrey, Mexico. I was very very apprehensive until I made the decision for surgery, then it was a great feeling, a relief. Sure I was nervous, but committed in my heart. I actually told NO ONE that I was going to Mexico for surgery, because I knew I would not get the support I needed. It was scary, going to Mexico for the first time, alone, and having surgery. I am a nurse (and BTW, my coordinator said that 35% of their clients are doctors and nurses and other health care professionals from the US!) , I constantly struggled with the thoughts of feeling I had to "resort" to banding because I was lazy or a loser. It's easy, right? Just eat less and exercise more, right? Well, it's more complicated than that, and any person of weight will tell you that. Obese people are experts on weight loss--after all, we have been on diets over half our lives! I knew I wouldn't be covered with my health insurance (my BMI wasn't quite high enough and I didn't have enough comorbid complications yet) , but to be honest, I went to Mexico because I trusted the doctor I went to. AND I do not regret my choice. The doctors in Mexico have performed more lapband surgeries than the doctors in Mexico, and some of the surgeons in Mexico have proctored US physicians! Just do your research on Mexican doctors--there are many excellent people on here to be a resource for you. Review the forums, as probably any question you have has no doubt been asked already. Once you research, make your decision, and commit, you will find your apprehension will turn into excited anticipation! Jenny

    what is a bougie

It's a tube of a certain diameter in millimeters. The surgeon puts the bougie in your stomach and uses it as a guide for the stapler, kind of stapling next to it. Not all surgeons use a bougie as a guide--some use an endoscope, but they all, I believe, use something as a guide. They're not stapling your stomach freehand. Research has shown that complications like strictures and difficult post-op days (nausea, vomiting) are more associated with smaller bougie sizes but larger sizes don't give as much weight loss. So your surgeon has to decide on a happy medium.

    Balancing Diet and Exercise

I've been stuck at the same weight for a year and half.... it's because I'm not willing to go down to 600-800 calories. I've discovered that I will only lose if I eat only 600-800 calories a day. If I eat "normal" I stay the same or even gain. I also ride the elliptical 30 - 45 minutes 5-6 X Week and it makes me sad and fustrated that I have to do this for the rest of my life just to maintain. I also get sad when I see people make fun of "overweight" people saying they aren't trying hard enough. I'd like to see some of them live on 600 calories a day. They would say we didn't have to go to that extreme but I know it's true. I think once you get overweight your body really changes and we do have to work hard, try harder and live on less then someone who has never had a weight problem or who hasn't yo-yo'ed all their lives. Sometimes I feel sorry for myself but I try to put the negative thoughts out of my head but I paid $17500 of my own money for this and still it's a daily struggle not to gain my weight back.

    Balancing Diet and Exercise

I know, I am struggling myself too! But we will move...I am sure it has a lot to do with our fills. My doc said that the saline we have in our band does still seem to dissipate a little bit, so they never get the same amount out that they put in. She wasn't really sure why, so if you have the same amount of say 6cc's in for over a long period of time and some of it dissipates, not to mention as we loose weight are bands get a little looser. Together those two things could equal maintenance fills, always.. Everyone have faith, I know how your all feeling as I am still 9 pounds away from hitting 100, and I still have almost 99lbs left to go....This can't be it!! We just can't give up!!!! Don't loose the faith you all!

    Back on REAL food!

Today was my first day back on real food. For lunch I had a Chick-fil-a sandwich (no pickles) and a small order of fries. I ate very slowly and tried to concentrate on chewing very well. It took me about 45 minutes to finish and now I feel FULL. This is awesome!!!! Before my band, I would go to Chick-fil-a and get a sandwich, large fries and a 12 pack of nuggets. The nuggets I would eat in the car on the way home. When I got home I'd inhale the rest in about 5 minutes. This is so much better. Since my fill isn't until Sept.20, I'm really worried that I'll have to make my ticker go to the left. I'll be happy if it just stays right where it is until my fill. Of course I wouldn't mind if it continued on its merry way to the right. I have come up with a strategy to combat the fact that I can now eat real food. This past week I have been faithfully walking every evening. I go around my neighborhood and the distance is roughly (measured with my car) 1.2 miles. I walk this in 33 minutes on average. Tonight AND FROM NOW ON I am going to extend my route. My neighborhood is vaguely shaped like a E. I live in the middle of the top. I go down the vertical, along the bottom, turn around, go along the middle both ways and then back up and over to my house. Tonight I'm going to do all that, except when I get to my house I'm going to keep going. I'll walk outside the E from the top all the way to the bottom and then walk the E again. That should make my route (for those of you who aren't lost yet) roughly 2.5 miles. I'm hoping that will keep me from gaining before my fill. Teresita, thanks for the reassurance. Although I gotta wonder why the icon is running away?:rolleyes

    Waiting for Monday

Thank you for the PM's and the guidance. I will continue to be in touch! All I can think about is talking to my PCP on Monday to find out about my out of network pre-cert that she has to give me to see my doctor (Robert Pinnar in Reston, VA). I am so tired of the struggle! I have done every diet that you can think of, every weight loss plan that you can join, and even had a botched liposuction, only to end up STILL needing something that fits into my life and works for me!!! I am assuming that once the pre-cert is done my surgeons office is who will submit my medical records and weight loss attempts to Aetna for approval. My PCP is fairly new to practicing and not very knowledgable about all that this is required or could arise. I really feel like this is my last hope to get my weight under control before I do develop serious health problems. My blood pressure is "elevated" but not what doctors consider high. My cholesterol is 2 points over what doctors consider high. I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy, which makes me a likely candidate for diabetes, but I am not diabetic now, I am borderline with most co-morbidities and I am just praying that I don't have to become "sick" or have to be on daily medications to control certain illnesses before I can qualify to better my quality of life. *sigh* To Be or Not To Be...continued...
  23. Since the scale has agreed the last 3 days, I'm taking this as law. I am FIFTY POUNDS down! 50!! 5-0. FIVE OH. WOOHOOO!!! Reached my first major goal/milestone. So, so happy. Took 16 weeks. I don't know if that is slow or average but I don't care. As long as the weight keeps coming off, I will be happy. Next goal - next 25 pounds by June.

    Weird Results

I consider myself to be a slow loser, but it is relatively steady outside of the usual stalls. I am keeping active with Water aerobics three times a week and also walking. I do consider this a marathon and not a sprint (are those the right terms?) and so I am being very patient. Perhaps get back to basics - I think there is a "bootcamp" posted by Lilmissdiva here. If you are eating chocolate, maybe other things are slipping as well. That is not judgmental, as we all do it! Maybe, Like Iowaandy says, go back to liquids for a week. Definitely up the Protein. I think that is our best weapon against hunger and potential bingeing. I don't see your stats, but did you start at a lower weight than most? I think some of the lower starting weights may not drop as quickly. Also, when I get a little discouraged, I look at my progress since surgery and I think to myself how there is no way in hell I could have lost that amount of weight and kept it off before surgery. Some of us are going to go a little slower but it is still better than where we were on our own. Good luck you you!
  25. Well, I was banded in August (3rd to be exact), and it's now 7 months later and I'm down 40 pounds to 225#. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to now have my life back! A couple of things have happened to me since banding...my horse died (Feb 3rd), my aunt died (march 14th), and i bought a new horse (march 15th). The band has helped me in MANY ways, the most important was to get back into the saddle and showing again...I have a horse show this weekend in Tacoma, WA! I feel great; however, there are some frustrating parts...since loosing 40#, I haven't had the want to get a fill...but, I'm finding that I'm throwing up daily, no matter how little or much I eat. I know that my band hasn't slipped, I feel no discomfort but I'm wondering if it adjusted to a smaller size since I've lost a good amount of weight.... Here are some pictures of me now......
