3 months post VSG and NOTHING

I feel your frustration! I’ve only lost about 60 lbs in the past year and a half since my VSG. My dietitian isnt very helpful in my trying to get my grams of protein other than adding protein shakes which definitely slows down my weight loss! I’ve resorted to eating (and tracking!) an all protein diet (eggs, fish, chicken, etc..) and adding in small amounts of green veggies. To get to my protein goals I have to add a protein powder like unflavored GenePro to my food and drinks. I only weigh myself a few days a week. Now I’ve developed terrible acid reflux and a hiatal hernia so I’m going to be revised to a RNY. I’m hoping it will fix a multitude of issues!!! Hang in there! Take a look at MyFitnessPal to track your food and macros!

    Protein...You're making me sick.

After 9 days, my surgeon told me I could eat anything I could tolerate, just chew very well. To the folks that hate their shakes, the ones by unjury & Syntrax nectar I found to be pretty good. I also heard good things about MuscleGen Genepro; it is recommended by Johns Hopkins. .

    3 weeks post op

You might want to try Genepro (I bought mine in Amazon). You only need 1 tbs for 30 grams of protein! It has no taste and mixes into anything (crystal light, broth, yogurt, apple sauce, etc...) without leaving a funky taste. It's really helped me!
  4. I'm 14 months post-op and have tried them all. Unflavored unjury clumps up (and in my opinion, tastes horrible.). I ended up throwing out any food or drink I added it to. It's sad because its the only medical grade Protein out there used in hospitals. I feel 100% confident it has the 21 grams of protein it says it has in it... But what good is it if it is left unused in my cubbord? I am at goal weight but am wanting to find something to increase my protein to increase my muscle mass. I was curious about GENEPRO as I had never heard about it before a week ago. I will attach a recent link I posted to your thread. I ended up ordering some Genepro and posted a review at the end of the link. The powder is tasteless and mixed into my coffee and disappeared. As far as if it is "real" protein, I only have the testimonies on the BP users on this site. There are no studies on the product and its only available on Amazon and the company website. It seems amazing... But I have to wonder why gyms, nutrition stores and doctors aren't promoting it more if its so wonderful? Regardless, I will continue using it since it's an easy add to my morning coffee! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/341782-Genepro--30-grams-of-protein-serving-untrue%3F/page__view__findpost__p__3850001
  5. Hi. I'm new here. I had my sleeve the beginning of December. My weight at the time of surgery was 262. Here I am 2-1/2 months out and I've only lost 36 pounds. I went to the support meeting and the nut said I should be losing faster and told me we'll talk at my next appointment -- the end of next month! It's close to impossible to get an appointment. I would like to correct whatever I'm doing wrong before that. I am looking around for a bariatric nut but that's not going well either. In a typical day I will have a yogurt with GENEPRO, cottage cheese, a Syntrax nectar drink, and a shake. I always go over 60g of Protein and a minimum of 50 ounces of Water. I have been exercising 30 minutes a day and I switch it around, even doing the steepest incline on the treadmill. I do not eat meat. I haven't cheated on any kind of food I'm not supposed to have. If anyone can tell what I'm doing wrong, I'd be so thankful.
  6. See if she'll give you a bottle to try. I bought some and never drank them. Most of them are like 15 G protein in 20 oz. to drink 20 oz post op to get 15 g of protein was too much for me. I preferred to put 30 gram genepro powder in 8-10 oz of milk abs be done with it. Just me though.

    Genepro Protein?

I love Genepro! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Genepro Protein?

@scipuobabe - I really like the unjury chicken broth but I the unflavored is terrible! It clumps up and tastes very strongly of whey to me. Sounds like people are liking GENEPRO unflavored? (Despite how many grams of Protein it may or may not have). Any other unflavored favorites? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Genepro Protein?

I've read the same stuff. They're not claiming that it's the same chemical structure. They're trying to explain in layman's terms how they're changing the chemical structure. They're describing stripping out everything but the protein chain and then binding the protein chain to less stuff but still stabilizing the protein chain and in the process making it more bioavailable. In trying to make it understandable to non scientists they've actually made their description not scientifically accurate. My scientist dad used to get driven crazy by this, he called it "simplification to the point of error". I've read some other documents by the company, and it appears to me they're claiming that their process of refining the Proteins reduces allergens and makes more of the protein bioavailable and that's what they're basing the claim on. I've also read the outcomes from the clinical trial. While I think there are some basic flaws in the study design, my conclusion based on the raw data from the study (available at clinical trials dot gov) is that Genepro is as good as any other Protein powder. I have found it to be easier to mix in more foods at more temperatures than other brands, so I'll stick with it. For me, it's like the question of which is better, a .380 or a 9mm? The answer is the one you'll actually carry. My 9mm is a much better weapon, but it's not concealable. My .380 is, so it's the one I'm more likely to actually have at hand. If another protein powder is better, but I won't use it because it's gritty or changes the texture too much, or won't dissolve well in hot liquids, is it really better?
  10. Oh, yeah, I guess I wasn't clear. I'm stocking up on pretty much all of the variety/sampler packs I can find, plus I got a tub each of unjury and GENEPRO unflavored. I did get a full tub of a key lime pie though because it's my absolute favorite flavor for everything, but I'll probably mostly finish it pre-op. oh, then you're fine.
  11. @@dfaulkner hi there and congratulations on your tremendous success. I think we all worry about going back to old habits or complacency. I was a restricter for so many years. Now if I want something I let myself have a bit and then I am not in that mental state of Can't Have. It's a head game, for sure. Boredom can be a factor; if I'm busy I'm not thinking about food. Pink Dahlia's suggestions are great. Maybe you need a treat so why not find the right one for yourself. I have those 100 calorie yogurts that have real sugar and Steevia in them -- I mix in chia seeds and a little gluten-free Cereal, maybe a few nuts to make it chewy so I get the signal for satiety (otherwise yogurt is a slider for me). This appeases my sweet tooth and my craving for something creamy, plus it's a meal. If I'm short on Protein I put in a spoonful of GENEPRO Protein powder for a 30 gram hit. But that's rare. I have a bottle of Steevia that I like -- it's from Trader Joe's. There is a lot of variety in taste and you need to be careful to make sure you get one that is 100% Steevia as there are ones out there with less than desirable ingredients. It's super sweet so just try a few drops in something. Good luck and let us know how you're doing. Four years out is so inspiring!

    2 week pre-surgery diet

From what I understand, as long as there are no bits and pieces, both are fully accepted. On my clear liquid diet which is more strict (I hated it lol), bone broth was encouraged. My favorite protein is Genepro. I even use it in my coffee lol.
  13. It's interesting how each Dr. gives us different direction. My Doc said that for the first year, I'd need to supplement my Protein with shakes or he suggested GENEPRO (flavorless protein powder) which has 30gm of protein in one serving and mixes with pretty much any liquid. My meals are so small that even though protein rich, I don't get enough food down to tic off too many gms of protein. I have so much more energy when I keep the protein up.

    Clear protein shakes?

Clear Protein shakes: Isopure NoCarb, whey juice, Cytosport. Traditional protein shakes are powder or RTD look for brands such as Isopure, Premiere Protein, Syntrax nectar, Orgain Organics, etc... they are either premixed or powder form that can be mixed with milk of choice or Water. If you are looking for clear savory beverage. Unflavored Protein Powder can be mixed with clear broths or Soups. Isopure, GENEPRO, unjury and Syntrax make an unflavored version. Your local GNC or Vitamin shop may also have a variety of unflavored whey isolate powders.
  15. I'm not sure any of the Protein drinks have science behind them.......and even if they do we all know any "independant study" can be manipulated to look like whatever "they" are trying to prove. What I do know is a tablespoon of unflavored Protein powder is something I can swallow. That's better than no protein since I (and many others) can't seem to get any of the protein drinks/powders/bars down. I just received my GENEPRO and will begin today. If I feel better and my blood work is good I'll continue to use it. If not, I won't. If you're able to ingest the other protein products then congratulations.......I certainly wish I could. We all have to do what works for us as individuals.

    Isopure unflavored protein tips

Before you buy this be sure to check in with your Dr or Nutritionist. But...I a huge coffee drinker for sure. BTW BariatricPal Store has a new product, it is NO ACID COFFEE Even my hubby likes it. LOL So back to unflavored Protein: I put GENEPRO in my Espresso every day. No taste at all. Win-win for me!!! It definitely has no taste at all. I tried ISOPURE and personally, it was so gross!! I commend anyone that can drink it!! GROSS!! I tried a protein unflavored called PROTEINEX!! According to my DR. that is why I ordered it. He was wrong!!

    Getting the protein in

I have a scoop of Genepro protein (30g) powder in my decaf coffee every morning followed by Oiskos Triple Zero Yogurt (1/2 container has 7.5 g) for breakfast. For lunch I will have grilled chicken breast (2 oz gets me about 11g) and some cucumber so I don't go crazy from all protein all the time. For dinner I've been making soups or eating beans where I'll usually get 6-10 g. Depending where I fall for the day I will drink 1/2 of an Isopure icy orange (I am one of the few that can stand them) According to the app I use Lose It I average about 72 grams of protein a day.
  18. Is the Genepro protein approved? That is awesome that its just a tablespoon. Was it expensive?

    Protein

By the GENEPRO powder at the very least get the sample pack off their website $3.50 for two servings. Also when I placed my ordered I did it through lucky Vitamin and bought two bags with a coupon code i found and getting free shipping it was $60 for the two bags and that's a two month supply if you do one scoop a day. Well worth it in my opinion!

    Protein

I love genepro protein powder. It's tasteless, dissolves in anything. 1 small scoop is 30 grams. I just dissolve 2 a day in anything I'm drinking or eating. Soup, juice, yogurt.... There is no way I could get my protein with out it. I despise protein drinks & the fake sweeteners give me headache.
  21. I only experienced minimal hair loss, but I've lost weight at the rate of an injured turtle. I think those who lose a more substantial amount of weight at a faster rate tend have more hair loss. I've been using SLS products for years because my dermatologist recommended them back in college to help reduce the risk of acne breakouts, and they also are less damaging to your hair. Loreal has a line that is readily available at most stores, and very reasonably priced. I also really recommend Nioxin's shampoo. I haven't cared as much for their conditioners, so I mainly use the shampoo and then a Loreal SLS free conditioner. I use a hair mask, or if I'm out of one coconut oil, once a week for deeper nourishment. I did take collagen for a couple of months based on a post I read on here recommending it, and saw an improvement in my skin but not a perceptible difference in my hair. I bought it on Amazon. I never took Biotin or any other Vitamins that claim to benefit your hair because many can cause acne. I have PCOS and have be really careful. I do take Vitamin D, which definitely helps with hair growth, and a multivitamin. I also try to get enough Protein in, and drink plenty of Water. I was struggling for a while to meet my protein goals, and adding in GENEPRO as a supplement (I'd never recommend it as a standalone source of sustenance or protein) helped me out.

    Clear liquid question

I absolutely love GenePro!! I can mix it in anything and it isn't clumpy. I got 90 grams of Protein today and felt great. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. Second this and how! Sugar-free popsicles were life-savers for me. Just do what you can and try to stay hydrated. I used genepro as well- I was really sick as a dog for the first couple weeks for complications but especially the first 10 days. Try to drink as much as you can and try broth. Some people have it easier with warmer and some with cold. I know it can be stressful at this stage so just do the best you can. Move around and keep track of when you are drinking- force about an ounce at a time of anything you can handle.
  24. 19 months post surgery. Been at goal for 14 months or so. This is what I ate yesterday. I do typically on the weekends have a few treats. ie last weekend I had one champagne cupcake, one slice of pizza, a bowl of Cereal and a few hot tamales at the movies. Not an entire box. I can eat anything I don't dump but will feel nauseous if I eat an entire box of hot tamales so I ration them out into a baggie for the movie . I still get my Protein in on the weekends but have what I want and then I am on the wagon come Monday. Again this works for me as I have a sweet tooth and I pretty much workout everyday. And I have never counted anything except protein and Water.....I love my nutritionist for understanding it's just not my thing. 5 am coffee with creamer and scoop of GENEPRO protein 30 G take all my Vitamins except my Calcium Workout 7 am Shakeology shake vanilla with added strawberries 9 am Old fashion oats with blueberries and 1/2 scoop protein 12 pm salad with salmon take calcium chews 3pm Combat Crunch Protein Bar 6pm Taco salad with ground turkey...no shell 8 pm Skinny pop snack Once your at goal you need to find what works for you. I keep my weight within a 4 lb range. Good luck- LA
