Holy Crap! Nsv's 1 Week Post Op!

I was wondering how you are doing a week out? Have you had any complications?
  2. Current thread from a poster with complications, surgery done in Mexico. http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/297213-i-had-a-small-leak-now-all-hell-has-broken-loose/ Her surgeon, who has done a lot of folks on this board, is in touch with her and is trying to mitigate things, but what a mess when you have different teams in different countries trying to sort things out. This is the atypical scenario for Mexico sleeves, but, it is a real possibility that complications will happen, and the ability to deal with the complications is hampered when the original doctor is in another country. Just something to think about and frustrating for everyone all around. I feel for this woman.

    Bad Omen :(

Yes, I'm doing very very good! My recovery is going super smooth and I feel great, no more pain from swallowing! I'm still sore from surgery but that's normal and I feel better a little more everyday no nausea or complications though!! (knock on wood!!)
  4. Hello everyone! I came across this website last night after attending my information session on weight loss surgery. My mom had the bypass last year and after doing research and being a nurse, I thought the sleeve would be a better option for me. I just made my initial visit with the surgeon for next week and am feeling very nervous about it. I am 25 years old, and I am at my highest weight which is 275. Crazy to think that just 7 years ago when I graduated high school that I was 168. I have tried dieting and I exercise and am just having no luck. I have borderline high blood pressure and cholesterol and my mom (before her surgery) had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and was prediabetic. I want to get my weight under control now before I start having major problems, cause as a nurse, I have seen the horrible complications of diabetes. I guess I am just looking for people's input on after surgery side effects. I am worried about nausea, which my surgeon said is common with the sleeve. I guess I am more worried about the vomiting that comes after nausea the most. Has anyone experienced this? And, my mom lost alot of her hair after her bypass, so this is another worry of mine, especially being a 25 and single. LOL. I know they say that you don't have the Vitamin deficiency with the sleeve, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced this as well. Any comments/suggestions/personal stories would be much appreciated!!!! I am looking forward to a life change, but it is super scary!!!!

    Tomorrow Is The First Consultation

I was terrified of going under anesthesia. Terrified!!! But let me tell you, they set me up in my bed with my iv and I got to watch tv while I waited for the surgeon. While I waited, I was given warm blankets, and then met the anesthesiaologist. They gave me something in my iv and I felt like I drank a bottle of wine. They wheeled me in to the OR, and I got myself on the operating table, all while feeling quite calm. They told me they would take good care of me, and thats all I remember. Then I woke up, in recovery, and it was the most comfortable I have ever been!!! I went in and out of sleep, and was even able to get up and go to the bathroom after a few hrs of being in recovery, with some help from the nurses, who were wonderful. I had heard a few people here say, you just have to give yourself to the nurses the day of surgery, and dont stress just relax. I never thought I could do it, and i was a mess the day before thinking I was going to die from some horrible complications...but the day of surgery, a calm came over me and I felt so ready. I did like everyone said and just let the nurses care for me...it was actually enjoyable!

    Leak 4Ever?!

Wow! I am so sorry to hear that. It has to be very awful for you and your gf. This is not the way it goes for the majority of people though. The complication rate for this surgery is only 1%. I will be very interested to read what your surgeon tells you about your leak that the anesthesiologist told you maybe permanent. Your surgeon will know the next course of action.

    First Appointment with Surgeon

One of the tests I'm scheduled for is an abdominal ultrasound. This is to look at my gallbladder to see if there are any stones in it. If there are, the surgeon may remove it as well to avoid further complications. I'm also having a hiatal hernia repair. This should help cut down on GERD, which I already have. So many things to do to get ready. I'm glad to meet all of you and to have this support!! Good luck to us all...

    Surgery with children?

i'd stagger your surgeries. Complications are real. They happen. I understand wanting to go through it together...and you still will....but I'd space your surgeries apart. One partner is the patient, one is the caretaker....then you switch roles. You're still doing it together. I would suggest you get help for your household, even doing it staggered. Twins are a lot of work. Cutting down from two caretakers to just one....is a huge difference.
  9. I am so sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope you are feeling much better now. I'm really not sure why you haven't had any replies about your condition. Erosion is one of the main causes of having the band removed. Maybe you could re-post in the section of October 2009 (maybe there are others in your month who've had the same troubles) or in previous months.. It is odd they haven't replied here. I hope you manage to get everything sorted. I have had MAJOR troubles with my band in my first few weeks.. from port flipping 180 degrees to infection to inflammation of my oesophagus ..and all in the first 6 weeks!.. I've been banded for 18 months now and have lost 50 pounds. not as much as I'd like but it is easy to stray and forget the rules.. I was offered to have my band loosened so I could enjoy my vacation last summer.. I was MORTIFIED.. NO WAY!.. I told my doctor.. "you don't understand.. my friends and family.. they EAT!.. and I have no willpower.. I NEED my band! '... So as you can tell.. with all of my complications.. I love my band and it has certainly helped me from GAINING anymore weight.. I just need to refocus on my goal and start following the rules again.. otherwise my dear band may have to be taken out due to neglect and abuse!.. take care and let me know how you get on!..

    Conversation with a lap band

I wasn't offended. I just thought that if you understood more about how the band worked, then some of the things that seemed to surprise you, wouldn't be surprises. I understand totally how someone, even someone with a band, could lose "only" 80 lbs. I was trying to help you make sense of it since you seemed so completely shocked by it. BTW, I'm not one of the lucky ones. I have a slipped band. It is a profuse slip with no realistic hope of correcting itself as a smaller slip might be able to. Because of that, I'm not a candidate for having another band placed. That's why I'm here. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't "defending" the band or cheerleading for it. I worked hard with my band. I wish it was luck, maybe I'd have lost more. It helped me lose a lot of weight, and I'm still glad I did it even though it has slipped. I don't see the band as a viable long term solution. I don't know many people who are as far out from their band surgery as I am, who still have their bands. The complication stats have changed significantly from when I was banded, and I don't want to think of what they will look like in another 5 or 6 years.
  11. The following comment is based solely on my own personal experience with the sleeve. I feel for you. But my concern is that at your current weight I don't see how you wouldn't wind up with the sleeve post-op becoming terribly underweight. I'm 13 months post-op and have lost 95 pounds and am now below my goal and trying to stay here without losing more weight. The sleeve really, really limits how much you can eat at one time. And when you're "done," you can't just put on the weight loss skids when you want to. It has taken me 5 months since reaching my weight loss to get to the point where I can regularly eat 1600 - 1700 calories a day, which is my maintenance calorie budget. And getting here took significant planning and snacking (not grazing!). In the meantime, I've lost another 10 pounds -- which, as it turns out, I like sitting at. And then there's this: If you're one of the unlucky ones who has a WLS complication of some kind you won't have a big overweight buffer to tide you over while your body recovers from the complication. These are the obvious reasons that surgeons don't do RnY or sleeve or other permanent WLS on patients who aren't already very overweight or obese.

    Removal & Sleeve same surgery?

I agree that it would depend on why band is being removed. When my first band was removed it was because stomach and spleen were adhesed and because they had to separate them and use staples they removed band so no foreign object would be there. But I would think if you have no complications and you just think sleeve will be better it probably wouldn't be a problem all at once but I would sure want to know my surgeon's experience and success ratio. Surgeons here in pa love love the sleeve. If I could have done it all at once I would have but I also didn't know enough about the sleeve at that time

    TALKING STOMACH AND DIET

You need to follow your doctor's post op diet exactly, regardless of what anyone else did on their post op diet. Cheating can result in serious injury and complications. It's not worth cheating.

    Removal & Sleeve same surgery?

I agree with Missy, it depends on the condition of your stomach and the level of complication you have and how experienced your surgeon plays a role as well. Having a band removed and Sleeved in one surgery requires a highly skilled revision surgeon. Leaks are at a greater risk with Band to Sleeve revisions moreso than with virgin Sleeves. Also, BE AWARE that Band to Sleeve revisions have a LOWER success rate than virgin Sleeves, so before you remove your stomach for nothing, make SURE you research the Sleeve in its entirety before you get it done and once you get your stomach removed you can't turn back regardless if you like it or not.

    Getting sleeved in 3 days

Last night I wrote you a long reply and somehow it poof disappeared. I'm 2 weeks out and I feel pretty good. However, the first 3-4 days are the worst- discomfort, hunger (whether it's in your head or actual hunger), the crappy liquid diet, and nausea. Some people have no pain. I needed my pain meds. Some have no nausea. I needed my nausea meds. Just remember that it's temporary and with every new day, you will feel better! Follow your dr's diet instructions. Not doing so could result in serious complications. It's not exactly a day at the beach but you'll get through it and you'll be so glad when you are a week out and the 2,3,4 and so on. Good luck!
  17. I had revision almost 3 months ago and just recently moved to more dense protein. I run, cycle, and train a lot. Pre op sleeve I had lost 100 lbs with my lap band. Had complications and started my revision at 168. I now weigh anywhere between 134 and 138. I feel like I eat all day and I'm hungry all day. I average 800-1100 calories a day with 80-100 g of protein and low carbs. If I eat too late, when I wake up, I feel a stretching sensation/pain in my stomach. Does anyone feel this way? Does anyone feel like they eat all day? My portions are appropriate as I'm eating 2-4 oz at a time. I'm feeling lost, hungry, and like I just eat all the time. Please share your insights! Also I made the popcorn mistake by eating too mucch felt nasty and got rid of all popcorn in my house.
  18. Hi there! I had my surgery on August 15th and so far I have had a complication free, speedy and very lucky recovery. I have lost 47 pounds including a one week pre-op which I am pretty excited for! Well I have an interesting story (I'll make it short, I promise) that I want to share with you. [below talks about lots of junk food - don't read if you are sensitive to that kinda thing, heh] Before getting the gastric sleeve I was an emotional eater. I binged multiple times a week and the only person who knows is my mom and a good friend of mine. Food was my best friend. I used to eat huge quantities, well over 10,000 calories at a time and end my day with a big thing of ice-cream. I still get disgusted thinking about eating everything that I did. And I did this multiple times a week for years. Anyway~ Besides deep fried cheesy foods, sweets was my number one go-to food. You know those, "Oops, we baked too much!" 50% off carts they have at super markets? Yeah, I attacked that. Sometimes getting two dozen donuts, 24 count Cookies, etc that would sit in my stomach after a day and a half (not including all the chips, Pasta, cheese sticks, hot pockets, etc I would eat prior) I was a wreck. [end junk food] Anyway, now that I had the sleeve I have had no cravings other than fresh fruit. I am allowed SF/FF pudding (I got dark chocolate, my favorite) and I took one bite and it was far too rich! It went down smoothly and I had no problems but it was just disgusting. Pre-surgery the richer the better! But no, I just can't tolerate it now. I tried again a week later (the other day) and took one small spoon. Nope, not happening. I just don't want it and I gave it to my mother and said she can eat them. ISN'T IT CRAZY HOW MUCH YOU CAN CHANGE AFTER SURGERY? This super-super-sweet girl doesn't like sweets! I get great satisfaction by adding a strawberry to my crystal lite lemonade or eating two small blackberries but nothing more. I think this is a big fat NSV!!!!!!!! Does anyone have a story similar to mine?
  19. Of course the nurses aren't going to give you crackers when you're on a liquid diet. Bet they were shaking their head at you. Follow the diet and instructions given to you. Do not advance your diet early or you'll increase your chances of complications substantially. Make sure you get your protein in as it aids in the healing process. I'm 7 weeks post op and still don't have an appetite. I'm on solids now. Focus on what you can have and not what you can't have. Best of luck! [emoji846]

    WLS for Binge Eaters?

there are people who are able to eat around their surgery. so it depends on what you binge on. obviously, the more you can deal with before the surgery the better. the surgery doesnt fix your emotions or your thought processes. its just one facet of a complicated situation. very few of us were fat for one single reason.
  21. So my SO is totally supportive and has been really excited for me but now that surgery is getting close, he keeps making comments about when I'm skinny and different sly things about how I will prob leave. My surgery is really high risk. I know he's scared to death and now I think he's starting to question us. He doesn't have a weight issue and works in the entertainment industry. He's never had a problem with confidence and is the life of the party. Anyone have any tips? Do I just ignore it? Reassure him? Let him act like a whiney baby?[emoji38] Why are they so complicated ?! [emoji13]

    New and Nervous

cblair6271- I agree that you should not waste any more time. Your boys are still small and you will be able to give them so much more of yourself when you get your weight under control. You also owe it to your boys to keep yourself safe. Please let the fact that the lapband is less dangerous play a factor in your decision. There is risk in any surgery but please be informed and evaluate the risk and chances of complications. The band is much less invasive and reversible. There are no malabsorption issues. It is also a tool that you will have to work WITH to lose weight. Goodluck in your journey!
  23. I had surgery with a weight of 240 after the diet. My rny was fine at first but I started having complications. To this day we aren't sure what caused them, but after four months in and out of the hospital I had my surgery reversed and had gastric sleeve instead. It's very rare to do this but this was my surgeons suggestion. My first surgeon was a total jerk and was very unsupportive. It was a tough experience and very scary. I had two pic lines and went days without eating or drinking. After my sleeve surgery, my major complications stopped, but I have never been able to transition to solids. My sleeve surgery was March 2015 and I've never had a full meal. I found a new surgeon who has diagnosed me with a stricture and scar tissue in the spot they reconnected my pouch from the rny with the new sleeve stomach. He has done one dilation on me but it did not help. He wants to continue the dilations. The ironic thing is that he says if the dilations don't work, I may have to go back to rny. So I'm 123 pounds at 5'6 and still losing about two pounds per week. I can't seem to settle on a weight loss goal and I'm terrified of entering maintainence. On the positive side, because this post is not in any way intended to be negative towards this surgery- I have never looked or felt better. I feel amazing in my new body. I love the way I look now. I Celebrate this body by dressing up and buying clothes and enjoying a dating life and a social life I would never have had otherwise. My confidence is through the roof. My back pain is gone and I have more energy for my kids and life in general. This surgery have my my life back and released me from the chain of a food addiction. I would do it again in a second!!!! Again and again. Because guess what? Nothing tastes as good as thin feels. Period. I hope my story helps you in your journey. I highly recommend this surgery, it is a wonderful tool that can give you the leverage you need to lose weight and the truth is the vast majority of people do not have complications. I would do it again in spite of mine and I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has for me. Here are some photos of me. I haven't had any plastic surgery and don't plan to. Before: Most recent: The last one, me swimming with my kids, is something I could never have done without this surgery.

    Insurance Issues *need Advice

A word of caution though. Your insurance carrier will have a contracted rate for services that you receive which will help you, but I'm just going to share my experience so at least you have the information. I had my surgery down in Dallas, 2 overnights in the hospital, no complications whatsoever... Just the hospital bill alone sent to Aetna was a bit more than $83,000... that doesn't include the surgeon's bill, anisthesiologist, meds, bloodwork and all kinds of other misc. other things they came up with. The contracted rate with Aetna meant that my ins. company ended up paying I think it was right around $52K or $53K to the hospital bill. I don't recall about the others off hand. I used IN NETWORK hospital and doctors too. Now, if you have a maximum yearly out of pocket which you should, then once you hit that, it doesn't matter whether your surgery costs $1 MILLION dollars, BUT.... you need to sit down and write out a bunch of questions about this and call your insurance company. Document who you talked to, when you talked them, time, etc... I realize you are young, but no time like the present to realize the importance of CYA (cover your @ss). Ask the customer service rep for documentation either to be mailed to you or online links on their site that clearly outlines your responsibilities for payment. Have the CPT code (someone else might know it here) when you call so that you can be as specific as possible. I just hate to see you end up getting bills for several thousand dollars after the fact and then its too late to do anything about it. That would be a crushing experience!
  25. I am a sleeve to bypass revision as well. My surgery was last Wednesday, Sept. 23 and my sleeve was in March 2012. I had no problems with the sleeve, and no complications. My sister did the same thing, sleeve and then revision to bypass. She warned me that the recovery for the bypass is harder, and to be honest, I have to say she was probably right. The bypass is more major surgery in that they take something and reroute it. I mean I know that's obvious but.....it does make a difference. Having said that, I havne't had any complications, and I am not at all regretting having it done. There are a lot of things that are the same, the tiredness, etc. I think you will do great, and the complications are just such a small percentage. My surgeon told me afterwards that he was expecting it to be much more difficult than it was, which was nice to hear. The surgery did take about three and a half hours. I also am off work for two weeks, including the surgery. I still feel like Ike I just had major surgery, but I am sure I will be ready to go back in a week. Although most people do say take another week off if you can. The other thing I have noticed....definitely still using my pain medication, but that is more for my incisions than anything. It just seems odd to me that I got on a flight home from Mexico two days after my last surgery, I totally cannot imagine doing that this time. It's just a different recovery. I don't know if that helps? But that has been my experience so far. I think you had messaged me previously, so if you would like to chat more, just let me know.
