Weight loss starts when?
ShoppGirl replied to linzcarr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weighed exactly the same day after hospital but many people do gain and some lose. It just varies like our bodies. -
I honestly don't care about being skinny or losing the weight anymore. I brainwash myself and now I see how wrong I was. Once fully healed I plan on gradually stretching my stomach back to a more normal size.. worst decision of my life.

Weight loss starts when?

All these post-surgery water weight stories make me so happy my surgeon had me take Lasix while at the hospital to get the fluids out. I have a heart issue and a standing prescription for Lasix as needed (which is very, very rarely). At the time I was a bit annoyed as to why they made me take it in the hospital, since I take it so rarely, but sometimes it's almost like the doctors have reasons for what they do! Looking back I am really happy they made me take it. I hadn't realized before surgery that you can gain all that water weight. It's also not unique to WLS. My brother got his gall bladder out a few months ago, and legitimately gained 20 lbs in water weight as a result. It took a good 4-5 weeks to get it out. Patience is a virtue when dealing with post-surgical water weight... -
What's Your Food Nemesis?
suzannethemom replied to Crisscat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
DORITOS and extra sharp cheese are my weakness. I’m also a pasta lover and I was so depressed when I found out that pasta is a food to avoid. Hopefully after I reach my goal weight, I can eat just a couple of Doritos to satisfy my taste buds. My dietician said that some of her patients are able to do that. -

You have to keep in mind that you were filled with gas/air and fluids in the hospital and your body is wondering what the heck just happened to it. You're recovering. The weight is going to drop like a rock any day now. QUIT WEIGHING! -
Weight loss starts when?
lizonaplane replied to linzcarr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't gain or lose anything. It probably varies a lot by the amount the hospital pumps you full of and how dehydrated you are going in, how much you pee afterwards, along with the fact that bodies are weird and different. The weight will come off. -
Um... this surgery doesn't "fix" your mental health. It only helps you eat less. The changes in mental health require therapy and medication. This surgery is often touted as a cure-all, but in fact, there are no guarantees that your co-morbidities will go away even if you lose all of your excess weight. I have lost 113 lbs and I have more pain than ever, and my mental health is no better (I had bipolar disorder before, and I still have it). I still have high cholesterol, and I'm still tired a lot. It doesn't help me crave fewer sweets; I still want to eat junk food, and I still feel guilty about almost everything I eat.

Weight gain is normal from all the IV fluids. Drink as much water/liquids (as your program advises) and walk walk walk. This will help with any pain and get your body back in whack. -
Sleeve with high BMI
Queen ApisM replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got the sleeve, and to get where I fantasize about being (top of healthy BMI range), I'll have to lose 225 lbs. That is a crazy large number, and I have debated whether bypass or another surgery might have been a better choice. But, I remember what one surgeon I consulted with told me early on: "It's a tool. It doesn't do the work for you" and that helps me a lot. He reminded me that plenty of people are really successful with both surgeries, and that many people also fail with both surgeries. They are not magic bullets. Moreover, you have to be comfortable with the physical change you are making to your body. Initially, I wanted sleeve but let everything I read convince me that was a bad choice to maximize weight loss. I was going to do bypass, but I was never happy with that decision. The surgeon above really forced me to rethink why I was going the bypass route and once I thought about it, I knew sleeve was right for me so long as my endoscopy didn't preclude it. After I made that switch, I was just so at peace with my decision (at least until the pre-surgery jitters came up right before surgery!) I also realize I may not get to where I would like to get to, and that is also okay. I have an "ultimate goal" in mind, but I've also set some interim goals that would result in much improved health outcomes, and will be moments for me to reassess where I am and whether I want to try and keep going. I also don't want to be constantly fighting to maintain a certain weight, if another weight still provides health and appearance benefits without that constant battle I may decide to stay there. Basically, I want to find a weight where I can be at peace with my body while also taking better care of it. -
Horrible acid reflux 4 days post op
catwoman7 replied to JessM87's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had pretty much zero interest in food for the first five months. If you continue to not feel like eating at all (and you might not for awhile), take full advantage of that! It'll never be easier to lose weight than when you don't give a flip about food!!! -
Sleeve with high BMI
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Trust me people have all sorts of opinions about what other people should do. Don’t get weight loss surgery, they knew someone who did and didn’t lose any weight. Don’t get this specific type of surgery, don’t expect to lose all the weight, etc etc. Weight loss is eating at a calorie deficit. Surgery helps us eat at this deficit by providing a physical restriction. Literally the only difference between losing 80 lbs and 180 lbs is eating at that deficit for longer. You can do it, just stay patient and keep the course! -
I had already been doing weight loss diets under my doctor's supervision (I never really intended to get wls, I did keto and thought that would work wonders for me) so when I did everything I could and still didn't have any long term success, my doctor actually suggested surgery. I have BCBS of Illinois so I called them to find out if I have coverage for it and they said yes, so I found a doctor in my network and had my 1st appt on Feb 28th. I had to watch a 4 part video and do a quiz for each part, I had to get lots of bloodwork done, and ecg because the anesthesiologist required it, had to get a clearance letter from my neurologist (I have MS) and my primary doctor. I got those really fast because both were completely on board. I was able to get all of that done really quickly, and honestly I thought the biggest hurdle was going to be my insurance. Everyone was STUNNED that I got my approval, and they got the approval letter, in 48 hours. Nobody expected that at all.

Weight loss starts when?

Everyone's bodies work at different rates. I did gain 5 pounds after surgery, but have lost ten pounds since home. Surgery was April 6 -
Grief counseling or group meetings definitely help. Our local hospice had free group meetings and a local church does as well. Sorry about your Mom, it’s such a difficult loss. I agree with the others, focus on what you need more than beating yourself up worrying about your weight.

April 2022 Surgery Buddies
Kimmy Kaye replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm really doing incredibly well. I haven't felt much like walking much, but told myself I am getting up and going out in the morning. Not much of an outdoor walker. Maybe I will get better at it. To be honest, I have had rude people comment on my weight in public, which keeps me out of the public eye, but I live in a quiet condo area with little street traffic, so I hope to go early and not feel too self conscious. I will stick close to my condo anyway to start. -
Regret and Shame. I had a Roun Y 23 years ago. The first cpl years were maGical! The weight dropped off, my skin snapped back, I could do any activity I wanted. Then somewhere between 2-5 yr I started having one more bite, a glass of wine, a bite more dessert and so on. I don’t really have dumping or a ton of restrictions. I eat like everyone else eat the table. I started putting on 10 pounds at a time and finally reached my pre op wt. Because I had an open procedure it took a long time to find the right doc to do a safe revision. My revision was last Tue. I will stay true to the guidance for the long haul. It is a precious tool, but I have to take responsibility for what passes my lips. I’m great full for the community and the support.

Wow that is quick! Ive been going to my weight management office since Oct 28th, 21 (my first visit). Ive had to do a series of "workshops" and bloodwork before moving into the next phase.....which was cardiac dr to release me for surgery then more bloodwork then off to do the EGD (Feb 9th). My March visit was to be turned into insurance for approval but the office dropped the ball and that didnt happen. So now my April appt I was told it would be sent (again?) for insurance approval with a tentative surgery date sometime in May is what I was told. I'm only going to wait a week or two and ask if its been sent yet because it wasnt done in March . Glad to hear yours was more flawless and quicker. In my program we must show we will not gain weight before we get approved for surgery. I have been able to stay below my start weight on my first visit but Ive not lost much either. So Im constantly a work in progress. Others lose quite a bit up till surgery and others like myself squeak by. I have mobility issues because of my knee issues.

Weight loss starts when?
catwoman7 replied to linzcarr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yep. Water weight from the IV fluids. I've heard of some people gaining 10 or more lbs from it. It takes a few days for it to work it's way out of your system. In the mean time, if it's stressing you out, then just stay off the scale for a few days. -

Everyone gains weight while at the hospital. Its water weight, it will come off. -
Hey y'all, I'm 6 days post op for the gastric sleeve. Ever since I came home from the hospital I have weighed 4 or 5 more pounds than my starting surgery weight. I don't understand why I have gained and not lost weight. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. Although, I do struggle getting my water and protein in. Other than that I feel pretty good. What is everyone else's experience? Is this normal or not?

I Want To See Before & After Pics! (Cont'd)
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to LilMissDiva Irene's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm right there with you. I have MS, and I have 4 meds that are, what my neurologist calls, non negotiable. They treat my MS, my nerve pain, and my spasms. None of that will ever get any better, but the meds slow down the process of them getting worse. I'm so worried that taking them will be an issue after the surgery and keep weight on me that I would otherwise be able to lose. -
I'm sorry for the loss of you mother, Gigi. Weight-wise you've done GREAT! Be kind to yourself right now and don't focus on your weight. Try to follow the diet program as much as your grief will allow.

I never got to have a long time before my approval. I started the process on Feb 28th, everything was submitted to my insurance company on March 30th and my insurance company faxed my approval letter to my surgeon on April 1st. And the same day they called me and set my surgery for May 3rd. I was kind of eating what I wanted but now I have to start watching what I eat and changing my habits because a week before my surgery I have to do the all liquid diet. So I want to try and drop a few pounds before the liquid diet, which I know will cause me to lose a few pounds, as well. My doctor didn't give me a specific amount of weight to lose. He just said "try to lose whatever you can before surgery, to make your recovery easier" so, that's what I'm going to do....starting tomorrow (Monday).
