how have your exercise habits changed?
Shustar replied to brr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You will be amazed at the difference your weight loss makes. Tomorrow is my 4 week anniversary and it is night and day when I play tennis. Have you tried the Brooks Ariel or New Balance 1340? A strong motion control shoe with good shock absorbtion can help. You may need a different type of custom orthotic. There are many types and methods of creating customs. Best of luck! -

1 day away from surgery and scared to death...help
singledad167 replied to likeblanche's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It's perfectly normal to be nervous and scared. If you weren't I would be worried about you. Now the chances of your liver being too big is very slim. Especially for women, it's more common for men. I've only seen one or two people on here say they couldn't get the band because their liver was too big. They did a couple more weeks on the liquid diet and they were good to go. They were both guys. You'll go great. Good luck and take care and let us know how it goes as soon as you can. Just go to www.tickerfactory.com select the weight loss, follow the instructions, then copy and past the url in your signature, and your'e good to go. -
Minimum protein amount recommended?
RickM replied to ctsleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If this is a lactose intolerance problem, which is not uncommon post-op, then whey Protein isolate can be used as it has had the lactose filtered out of it as part of the process. Isolate is expensive, so the cheaper Protein drinks are usually blend of cheaper whey concentrates, isolate and other sources. Yogurt also has had most, if not all, of the lactose consumed in the fermentation process, and many cheeses are very low in lactose. One can also take :Lactaid tablets just prior to consuming dairy with lactose in it. On the minimum amount of protein required, that is largely dependent upon lean body mass. A small, light (will be light!) woman who may end up with a healthy weight in the 100-110 lb range will need somewhere in that 55-60 g range while a fairly muscular man may require 100g or more to maintain their lean body mass. Inclination towards increasing muscle mass or healing from major trauma can add 50% to those figures. -
Minimum protein amount recommended?

My requirement per my surgeon is 40 g per day. Your requirement should go down as your weight decreases. I currently weigh 160. -
Restriction and daily calories
mercyme1912 replied to even11's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My doctor has the following guidelines: Calories 800; Carbs 40; Protein 65-80; Water At least 64 oz. Weigh and Measure everything, and Track your food. Protein first, followed by veggies. When I follow the guidelines I lose weight. I include one shake a day to up my protein. I totally avoid protein bars -- too many carbs. I think your proposed plan of an egg for breakfast and a piece of chicken for lunch and dinner would not be successful. You would "fall off the wagon" quickly and become more discouraged. I've had some difficulties lately and I'm just getting back on track. It is tough, but I won't give up. I am determined to reach my goal. Best of luck to you. -
a lot of women complain about moodiness the first few months. I'm not sure if there's actual medical research to back this up, but many people have said it's because estrogen is stored in fat cells, and when you lose weight quickly, a lot of that is released. Many women also report screwed-up menstrual cycles the first few months, so I suspect the hormone theory is probably correct. It should all work itself out though - it doesn't seem to last more than a few months - so you may be near the end of it. 45 lbs in 3 months is pretty good. It takes many of us about a year to lose 100 lbs, so you're doing just fine. as far as baggy, saggy skin - some of that will look better eventually because things seem to re-distribute a bit over time - but after a 100 lb weight loss, you'll inevitably have some saggy skin. I had a ton of it. I could easily hide it in clothes so no one knew it was there, but *I* knew it was there, so I had it removed when I was about three years out. So that's an option if you decide you can't live with it..

Have you ever been this tight?
new me by 30 replied to new me by 30's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So in 24 hours I had lost 4 pounds, which of course was all water weight, because I was so dehydrated. The Dr removed half of what he put but it still wasn't enough so he removed more. I feel amazing now that I am not throwing up every hour and I can drink water. Thanks for all the support Lappers!!! -
Grrr..my family is driving me crazy!
Christopher replied to DarlaRay145's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unfortunately, we will be tested like this everyday, and every time we open the fridge, the pantry, or go out to eat. The surgeons can fix the stomach, but they cannot fix the brain, and all the triggers that make us crave the foods that got us into the situations that caused us to have gastric bypass surgery. You need to be strong, things will get better, you will learn to find healthier choices to the foods that you crave. Eventually you we be able to introduce some of the things that you like, back into your diet in moderation. It is also great motivation to keep on tract when your weight starts to drop weight like you're melting away. I have now lost 112 lbs in 5 1/2 months and it feels great! Good luck! My liquid diet wasn't entirely liquid--I had two shakes and a light dinner. Didn't lose any weight to speak of on it, but did lose 25 pounds pre-surgically before that. Doctor never mentioned my liver post-op. As has been said many times before, we're all different and our programs require different things. Do what your surgical team says and be confident that things will work out as they should. It's a long road . . . but change is coming fast!

For Those At Or Near Goal...
Foxbins replied to jailynn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I kept losing even after I hit my goal of 150 lbs (I'm 5'8"). Not quickly, but over three months I lost another 12 lbs and I have settled at 138, plus or minus 2 and it's pretty comfortable to maintain. I guess you need to let your body figure out where it wants to be and you need to figure out how much a certain number means to you. If you are a few lbs above goal, will that make you nuts? Then maybe go below goal so that you have a little "wiggle room." If the scale staying the same bothers you, make another goal-- to exercise longer or faster, or enter a race, or lift more weight. Just something that makes you feel that you are striving for a goal and that will make you feel good when you've accomplished it. Keep up the good work! -
Goal and don't know how to maintain
Kindle replied to lclemur's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I was within 10 pounds of goal I started eating more fruit and whole grains. I kept losing. When I reached goal I added even more calories....full fat dairy, more complex carbs (in addition to the 69-80g Protein + veggies and fruit I had been getting). Still lost another 10 pounds. But when my body was ready to stop it stopped and I've maintained within the same 5 pound bounce range for over a year. Turns out my body picked my goal. Just remember, your body doesn't really care about the arbitrary number you or your nut or your surgeon picked out as a "goal". Quite simply, you will continue to lose until you eat enough to meet your caloric expenditures. If you eat more than you burn you'll start gaining again. If you want to stop losing at this point you simply need to add more calories. If you log your food, great, if not that's fine, too.... I've done this without ever tracking, measuring portions or counting calories. -
Yup, like @@onthefencejenny said, just normal adjustments the body is going through. You will probably experience a stall here soon, too. Your body is just going a little wacky is all. You are going to flucuate all the time during this journey. If the flucuations are going to drive you crazy, put the scale away so you don't have to see them Here's a good article about why it happens: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.php

Goal and don't know how to maintain
Big_Mama replied to lclemur's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am not at goal yet, 10 months out 123 lost, 49 to go. My NUT told me though, once I get to goal I would have to add a healthy snack or 2 between meals to maintain weight. Hope that helps. -
How many days until solids, according to your Dr?
littlepinkcloud replied to cantwait2start's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My instructions were two weeks liquids, one week mushies. So, I'm supposed to be on mushies now, but I'm sucking at it... Sad, cuz I did so well on the pre-op diet!! Needless to say, I haven't lost much weight since surgery. -
Help 2 Weeks Post Op Today Hungry And Eating...
Animallover77357 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a revision on May 11. I feel hungry all the time and can eat/drink up to 5 ounces at a time(pureed soups, jello etc). I still feel hungry after that at times. I have lost 25 or so pounds since pre-op diet and weight loss seems to be slower than I thought it would be. Again, surgery was 14 days ago. I feel like I have already failed and ruined the sleeve. My lapband was a nightmare and it was a fight to eat EVERY SINGLE TIME so the feeling is so much different now that its gone and Im not throwing up every meal I think I am not noticing the "signal" for full or just ignoring it. I am doing protein shakes at least once a day. Please help and let me know if this is normal. Will I feel the restriction once I get on solid foods? I have had a pretzel here and there and a tiny nibble here and there of solid foods but Im scared so I really try not to do that. -
I have been out almost 2 YEARS and have lost only 25 lbs total (was 35 but have gained back 10) dont feel like i need a fill. I still vomit everyonce in a while & now my insurance doesnt cover fills, so i am lost as to what to do,.....so i wish you luck and hope all works out for you!

Grrr..my family is driving me crazy!
TinyMamiOf3kids replied to DarlaRay145's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm the cook here. I also do the grocery shopping. I don't deprave my kids from chips or soda but its not an everyday thing. I have the healthy choice which is Quaker cheddar (I know more expensive then regular chips) but it works for me. If I need a crunch I grab my Quaker cheddar. I have crystal light lemon flavor (replaces soda) lots of water. Nuts a lot of yummy things. I don't crave junk food it's rare. I have my sugar free Hershey chocolate which I have only on PMS or Russell sugar free chocolate. It doesn't bother me having chips & soda or cooking fried chicken for my family. I decided during my 30 day diet that I will be strong & I won't fail after surgery & I haven't gain weight. I been faithful to my food. Fruits & veggies are my best friend now. Be strong fight it! You want to be a success. We are all here for you. -

Hello I also have uh community plan and they said and my surgeon also said 6 months supervised . I also have to see a pulmonary doc a nutritionist a phychiatrist a cardiovascular a few others also and u have to see them 2 or 3 times just to rule out any problems. Also have a 5 year history of weight loss diets or programs some people r 2 years mine is five. A medical necessary from your primary some people get it from the nutritionist because they don't have a primanary. Hope this helps a little or alot good luck to ya. -
Wow 108 pounds! Congratulations on your success so far! My weight loss has also slowed down, and I still have quite a ways to go. I think you are on the right track by shaking things up a bit and working out. My doctor recently told me that after our initial healing from surgery, new studies show that 40 grams of protein a day is plenty. After hearing so much about the importance of getting protein in, and atleast 60-70 grams a day this concept is still hard for me to believe. But atleast on the days when I don't get enough, I'm not as worried about it. I would just try to drink more water, and continue working out, hopefully your body will finally let go and you'll start losing again! That's what I've been hoping for anyways. Good luck with your continued weight loss, and let us know if things improve.

'm almost three weeks out and combined with the six months pre-surgery, two week fast and 19 days post-op, I'm down 45 pounds. Hoot hoot!!!!! My question to you all is how many of you have met the goal that you and your doctor set? Thank you in advance!!

I'm not sure if this is a stall or if I'm just not working hard enough any more... I haven't lost anything for about 6 weeks now. I've lost a total of 108 pounds and I'm very happy with that, but I'm far from thin. My weight fluctuates between 243-245 daily. I really need to get another 50-60 pounds off and I'm starting to wonder if it will happen. I've been exercising consistently for about 2 weeks now (5-6 times a week) but I really think my problem is my eating. I'm not getting the 80-100 grams of Protein a day...it's more like 40-60. My husband recently decided he wants to eat healthier, so hopefully that will help. Any suggestions? I also have not been getting all my Water in daily.

Just as an additional thought, if you have only recently been working out, you might be gaining some muscle which is making it seem like you aren't losing, even though you probably ARE losing fat & inches. Do you track your measurements? I bet there have been some changes there. Just keep it up, and the water is INVALUABLE, get 80oz a day and you will see changes!
