  1. It could be Fluid retention, im nine days post op and just moving onto mushies, I know it's a time for healing but I am still losing weight. We are all individuals and our bodies respond differently. Keep doing what your surgeon has asked you to do. Like someone else said in a few days you'll probably find that weight gain has disappeared. Unless you are eating like before it can't be fat gain, it's fluid. I wish you well on your journey. Also that time if the month plays havoc on the scales if you're female.

    Exercise And Hair Care

I went natural 3 years ago, I just wash, twist and keep going. I feel so much better, no having to worry about my hair sweating out during my workout sessions. I have been banded since May 7, 2012 and have since lost 36 pounds without a fill. I am thinking that this is slow weight loss, but my doctors tells me that I am doing pretty good to not have had a fill yet. There are weeks that I get frustrated due to water weight gain and muscle gain. Just trying to stay encouraged.
  3. Oh my gosh...I am so glad you posted this...I was banded on 4/26 and I have also gained like 6 pounds. I have been on mushies this week...and that really isn't the heathiest I've discovered...but on Wed I start on real food and I am terrified that this weight gain will continue as I will be consuming more calories. My first fill is on 5/24--which I am very anxious and nervous about. Thanks for letting me know that I am not alone is this gain...I have a feeling the fill will be great...but until then.....?

    Rapid Weight Loss

hiya! alot of us worried about rapid weight loss and getting too thin. more often than not it really becomes a non-issue. very very very rarely does someone lose too much weight to the point that it affects thier health. aesthetics though, may be a different story. you (or others) may believe you are too skinny, but your labs will likely say otherwise. you are taller and weighed less than me when we started. i too was "normal-sized" for the majority of my life. my weight gain was in my 30's, and early 40's (kids, family, work, mortgage, lol). went from 130-235 lbs. but at 5 months post op, we are both very close in weight loss PERCENTAGE WISE. you lost 66% of your body weight, i lost 65%. ** EDIT: CORRECTION, did my math wrong: you lost 34% of your body weight, i lost 35%. (i used end 5m body weight vs weight lost at 5 months for original calc..oospies!) ** and i can tell you that i did not get dangerously thin, nor was my surgeon or primary care doc worried at any point during my weight loss (nor during maintenance). i DID think i got really skeletor-looking when i reached 127 lbs, BUT i was 118.4 lbs this morning (and over 5 years out now), and honestly, i think i have not looked better since i was a teenager (i was firmer as a teen vs now lololozzzz). stuff shifts around, and the same number will look totally different on you at different times of your life. regular exercise does WONDERS for your appearance (and well being). anyway, i know i can't really just TELL you to stop worrying and you will magically stop worrying. i worried for a month or so as well way back when i decided to enter maintenance. alot of us felt the same way. maybe we all need to just go THROUGH the worry to get OVER it. good luck! ❤️
  5. I received this email today from www.myfitnesspal.com . Basically, it says to avoid long-term weight gain we should: 1. Eat more Protein 2. Eat more healthy carbs (colored, high-Fiber veggies; fruits; whole grains) 3. Eat fewer highly processed "slider foods" (highly refined sweets, starches, chips, crackers, breads, white rice, white potatoes, white Pasta, etc.) Duh, huh? The emphasis was on both how much and what kind of foods we should eat. It made the point that every calorie doesn't count exactly like all other calories and described how high-glycemic foods cause the body to produce more insulin, which favors fat storage. http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/2-science-backed-strategies-to-avoid-long-term-weight-gain/?utm_source=mfp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly20150504&mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRokv6rBZKXonjHpfsX56e8rWaWyhIkz2EFye%2BLIHETpodcMTsZiN6%2BTFAwTG5toziV8R7DBLM153N8QXRTg
  6. I am just starting my own pre-op diet (dr. only requires 2 week Atkins-type diet). Initially, I lost about 5 pounds, but have slowly been creeping back up .5 - 1 pound at a time. A lot of us go through last supper syndrome, which can cause weight gain, so don't stress out too much about putting on a few. Just try to control how much you eat and balance any "slips" with some healthy eating and exercise to keep any gain from being too dramatic. I can't imagine a few pounds would matter too much, but your dr. might not liek ti if you really start packing on the pounds because it will make performing the surgery more difficult. Good luck!!

    Evil birth control pill

Here's an interesting read on birth control and weight gain. I'm on the nuva-ring personally, I think my weight gain has been because of my eating habits and I too have PCOS. Anyway, it's worth a read: Birth Control Pills: Weight Gain and Fluid Retention

How did you do over the holidays?

You both did amazing!! I on the other hand did horrible. I have gained a total of 12 lbs in the last 2 months. I am starting over though. I went grocery shopping today and have made out my meal plan for all 3 meals a day for the next week. I find it much easier to stick to my diet when I plan. I have been going though alot of changes in my life over the last couple of months and know that has played a part in my weight gain as well. I feel like my life is starting to get back to normal and I want to get back into gear. I have been over 200 lbs since I was in elementary school and am almost 30 yrs old now. I can't wait to get in the 100's and know I will make it there soon. Congrats to you both!!

    Please Help Me!

I think the 10 pgs. is way too much information. Stick to the facts, list diets you have been on steady weight gain, list all the medical conditions you have from the excess weight. The only letter I had to provide was one that my suregon suggested my primary doctor write. The letter was a draft of what my primary should say. The draft letter was what the insurance companies want to hear and is what I listed above. Insurance companies only want what effects you medicaly.

    January 2011 Bandsters !!!

Renee!! I'm so sorry you're having to go through all this right now!! This whole process of jumping through insurance hoops is so stressful!! Is there anyway you can get on a waiting list with your pulmonoligist office so if someone cancels an earlier appt you can get in before the 17th? I have a cpap that I never wear...I hope they don't say anything to me about it!!! This is such a hard time of year to have our final appts (mine's tomorrow too) with all the food from the holidays. My surgeons office though wasn't too concerned about any weight gain so hopefully yours wont be either! I know its hard but try to stay positive...it will all work out!! Let me know if you need to chat/vent!!

Jan. 18th... no menu. Maybe blogging isn't for me.

I love your statement "To accept that I am worth this." I am brand new lapband. My surgery is February 11th. I've read a couple of your blogs. Please keep going. I'm so concerned about the menu part and feeding my family at the same time as I restrict what I eat. When members like you post their menus, it gives me ideas. I can't really give advice on the 2 pound weight gain, but congratulations on the overall 30 pound loss! Cindy

    Coffee & Weight Gain Study

Can coffee Cause Weight Gain? By The Daily Meal | Healthy Living Flickr/epSos.deGuess this means we'll be holding off on the daily cups of coffee from now on: A new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and food Chemistry has found that too muchcoffee can increase weight gain and fat cell retention. Researchers at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research and the University of Western Australia's School of Medicine and Pharmacology examined a compound called chlorogenic acid (CGA), found in coffee. Researchers were hoping that CGAs would specifically increase insulin sensitivity, reduce blood pressure, and decrease body fat thanks to previous research showing that coffee reduced the risk of type-2 diabetes. Unfortunately, the study did just the opposite. Researchers fed CGAs to obese lab mice that were put on a high-fat diet for 12 weeks; the animals were fed enough CGAs to account for six cups of coffee a day. Instead of losing weight, however, the mice gained weight; the results were either the same as feeding mice regular food, or worse. The CGAs "had no beneficial effect on their blood sugar levels and also, a little bit more worrying, the mice on this coffee compound tended to accumulate fat in their liver," University of Western Australia's Kevin Croft told The Age. So the results? Assistant professor Vance Matthews says that three to four cups a day does still decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, but more than five or six cups a day could reverse the process. In fact, it might actually case an "abnormal retention of fat within cells." No wonder the FDA is worried about crazy kids binging on caffeine. -Jessica Chou, The Daily Meal

    anyone REGRET the sleeve?

I have some regrets. I was not always overweight, my weight gain happened within the past 8-10 years. I went to an information seminar, really just wanting to find out more about my options. At the end, they asked for our insurance cards. Next thing I knew, the clinic called and said I had been approved by my insurance, was scheduled for tests, and had a surgery date. 3 weeks later, I was in surgery. Besides my weight, I didn't have any health problems, no comorbidities, etc. I wish I had taken more time to make the decision, and spend time on a doctor supervised diet, like so many others on here have done. Of course, without the surgery I might never have put the time and energy in to diet and exercise that I do now. I'll just never know. I think this is a decision that should not be entered into lightly, everyone should do plenty of research and spend a lot of time on these boards before taking this step. I didn't do that and have too many "what ifs" and "maybe I should haves" to put behind me. I bowed to the pressure to move quickly when I should have put the brakes on and given it more consideration.

    Too much weight loss

To regain some how about going back to tried and true yet healthier things. Fat and carbs are an awesome weight gaining combo. How about Protein drinks mixed with milk and Peanut Butter. Eat nuts a few times a day. Drink milk, eat some Pasta covered in cheese some times. Your type 2 diabetes is not improved by your weight loss? If I were you I'd get some medical tests done. You got to goal really fast by my standards. Really fast for a woman. I'd want to know why since good health is key.

    My story is new gossip:(

You know what I really love?....How skinny people believe that weight gain and weight loss is just a simple thing....eat less and exercise more. Period. So easy, right? Why didn't we think of that? Gheez! I told my niece....an exercise aholic and nutritionist, 3 mths after. Her first comment...I wish you would have told me before because I would not have let you have the surgery and I would have made you go to the gym. Really? I am 23 yrs older than you and in that 23 yrs I lost and gained around 100lbs. I understand the calorie in/calorie out thing sweetpea. This whole weight loss/gain thing is way more difficult than the 2+2=4 formula so many skinny people think they have figured out. 1+3 still equals 4, so does 5-1 and 8-4......doesn't matter, it all still equals 4. Our decision on how to get this weight off shouldn't make a difference to anyone. Its no ones business. Oh....and just wait. Rude people will continue to be rude and get pretty stinking good at it. I just heard....you had surgery 7 mths ago and you're still fat? Are you doing what your doctor told you? You should be skinny by now! That was my mother!!!!

    Any Complications?

Diarrhea is pretty common because all you are taking in is fluids, so out comes fluids. But if it becomes really bad, you risk getting dehydrated again. I know they gave me something, can't remember what it was, to stop the diarrhea that I got a couple of days after surgery. As for the weight gain gabby899, remember they are pumping you full of fluids, that is why you gain weight. It is all Fluid weight and as soon as you start eating normally and are not on IV anymore, the weight will come off!
  17. Being bipolar is a medical illness that as you know has no cure, only treatment. People who are not bipolar or who have never loved someone who is bipolar really cannot understand the unique challenges of undertaking WLS of any kind with this illness. Talk to your treatment team, psychologist and psychiatrist. If you are relatively stable WLS may be a possibility. You will definitely need to be very closely monitored as you lose so that medication adjustment can be made and your moods can be watched. I understand the problems with bipolar medications and weight gain. It's so frustrating! One doctor said to me that you gain 10 lbs just taking the script to the pharmacy to be filled! A psychopharmacologist told me that this is because it takes the lid of hunger and you just can never feel satisfied. This is one area that WLS surgery can help since physically you can feel full on much less. Youalready have a DH who can be supportive. That's so important. I'm sending big hugs your way and wishing the very best! It sounds like you have so much happiness already in your life. Hopefully you can put this one last piece in place!

May 2006 Band Crew ~ August Chat

Hi All, I did pretty well eating this weekend. I made pretty good choices, chewed well and ate slowly and......I still gained 2 pounds. Oh well! I have been debating whether or not to schedule another fill and, my weight gain this weekend decided it for me. My doctor is out of the country right now so I am scheduled for Aug. 11. I still have restriction but, I am noticing that I can eat more and definately don't stay full as long. I'm still paranoid about getting too much of a fill and becoming too tight. I like the fact that I can eat just about any food right now just not nearly as much of it as I used to. I'm thinking about changing my September challenge goal to 250 by my b-day which is 9/15. By the way, 3Loves, your kids are adorable. I saw the pictures you posted on Amy's thread. Oh, I almost forgot, welcome the gang Barbara!

    Never gain weight again

Dang girl, that has to be scary. You know, I was reading Gypsygirl's blog today, and she went thru so much trying to get a decent fill. Seems every time they over-filled her just a bit too much and then she had to get unfilled a bit. Honestly, I want the full benifit of the band, but Im really not looking forward to the fills. Partly because I'm worried about becoming too dependent on the band to keep me in line. It's great to have as a safety net, for the times we do slip up. A bandster's binge is a joke to what we all used to be able to do huh? So why haven't you been refilled? Is the band still slipped? What's going on? I think you need a hug. *gives you a big hug and smile* You'll make it through this. I know you must be so scared of the weight gain after all of this. Hang in there and lean on friends. Youre not alone.

    Weight worry!!

March 3rd, 2022, will be my one year post-op anniversary. I have lost 127 lbs. For a while now, everytime I eat something, I feel like I am gaining weight! I have this constant worry about it. I try on different clothes, just to make sure I am not, I check the scale regularly, etc. I love my success, and I would do it ten times over, if I had to, but I do not like this constant worry about weight gain.
  21. You are so welcome. Too bad you are in NH. Iam a very good listener and a great believer in everyday accomplishments whether mental or physical ( the latter not so much...........lol) I had GBS in 2006. Higher weight 311 lowest 187. In stating so, current weight bounces from 230 - 235 I seem to be stuck, but just can't be at peace with this weight gain. However my scale says "just live with this and move on" ! So hard headed! (and italian to boot!) Such is life. Love this site and just so happy for some that have made their goal above and beyond. Encouragement abounds!! Keep the posts coming! Thanks, Sharowna

    Stopped Losing Weight

Oh that is probably what the weight gain is. I always gain a few lbs during my cycle.. That happened before I had surgery too. You get bloated. Make sure to always weigh yourself as soon as you wake up and after you use the bathroom -- that way you can have a more clear idea of your weight. Everyone's weight fluctuates during the day after eating & drinking -- it can be a 2-3 lbs difference. But if you weigh yourself when you wakeup; therefore - have less food/liquids in your system, then you'll get a more accurate, consistent idea of your weight.
  23. Hello everyone. I am thinking of getting the Lap Band and have a couple of questions.... My BMI is 36, now I know that is a little low, but I have high cholesterol, major back pain, and joint pains, and a few other minor issues. I have tried everything under the sun to lose the weight on my own but the weight never comes off. I will admit I have an addiction to food (since I quit smoking) and I know this has led to much of my weight gain. I have a family history of morbif obesity, and other major health issues. I am wanting to get my weight and health under control before it becomes majorly out of control and I have major health issues. And I am on the path to it! So here goes the question... do you feel that I would make a good canidate for this? Do you think I will be approved? My insurance pays for damn near anything. Should I wait till my BMI is more? Thanks for the help. Jenn:crying:

    Sleep Study

I've been using a c-pap for about 4 years. It has been great for the most part. To tell the truth, some nights I fight it. But I will not even take a nap without it. Not able to sleep without it. I was 180 when I first got it, now I'm 220 and all my old symptoms are back. I have already talked to my dr and he said with the weight gain, my apena might have gotten worse. He wants to do another sleep study. I have been putting this off hoping that after my band and my weight loss that the apena will get better. Just hope that I get a "go" date soon or I'm going to bite the bullet and go in for the study. I can still remember after I used my c-pap that first night, even though I was not used to it and had a little trouble falling asleep, the next day I was awake all day with no headaches. I was heaven.

    I Miss You Coke!

I miss diet coke and diet dr pepper. But that was one of the bad habits I took up after my first RNY which could have lead to my weight gain. My surgeon says carbonation can stretch your pouch. I still crave the fizzy sweetness!!
