    Work

Had surgery on Tuesday, went back to work on Monday, but I'm a desk jockey and only work in my office 2 days a week. I was working from home on Friday the week of surgery. I really depends on what you do and how you heal.

    70 days... and counting!

Hi all  70 days to go, and after the last 7, they can't go fast enough. This past week it is confirmed that i have diabetes, hypertension and severe sleep apnoea. Not bad for someone that just thought they had a weight problem. I think tho, that i am very fortunate to have no had these diseases until the last while, and they they have been caught early on it seems. My lapband operation really can't come quickly enough from a health perspective for me. My G.P. and surgeon are not so concerned, assuring me these problems will almost certainly disappear once i have been banded and lost weight. All the medications i need are in place and i feel ok. I am not sure what i expected, but only the CPAP machine for the sleep apnoea bothers me. I am just trialling it, for this week and the nice feller will help me with my concerns after that. Speaking of which, it's late and i am back at work in the morning. So best, i go and get the gear on and try and get some rest. Hope everyone is doing well. Thanks for being there. Cya soon
  5. Hi : New Hope: The best I can tell you about being successful with the band is perseverence and sticking to the program 80% of the time. First Protein, then veggies and then if you have room to eat something else. I find this works for me. I also exercise several times a week, but have been lax for the last 2 weeks with the start of school and my hectic work schedule. But I know I will get back to the gym this week again. Before this, I exercised two-three hours a week doing some hard cardio. Also, my band is not extremely tight, so I have to make wise food choices. I tried tighter and had an unfill two weeks ago to less than I had before the fill. I am cool with this and feel more empowered. I have restriction, but not too much. Vera: I am looking forward to meeting you too! Betty: I am sure the more technically savvy people will post pics after the Vegas trip. So you will see me then, if not before! Penni: Please take lots of pics!! I need some desperately to show people. I am bringing a camera as well. Alex: I wish I could say that I hit 199.5, but I weighed myself at least 5x that day and jiggled around hoping to see it, but it didnt happen. But thanks for trying! LOL I really am going to try to stick to the program this week and see the ones. I know I will get there, but I just want to be done with it already!!! Its the psychological trauma! Oh no, I am going to need more therapy.!! LOL I need to have a three pound below 199 reserve so I can drink tons of booze when I am in Vegas! Babs in TX 334/200/170 -134 6/23/03
  6. Wow, Babs, you are an inspiration! I know you've been working really hard and your progress is amazing to see. Congratulations!! And I'll bet that you HAVE been below 200 on occasion in the last week or so, but just didn't happen to jump on the scale at that moment. (I think we all are, at all times, a range of weights. Hence the "ish" in my sig.) Sorry I won't be going to Vegas (this year), but I can't wait to see the pics from Lisa's backyard bbq!

    Wwyd?

I can't figure out what to do, and I would love some input. Including my initial banding, I have had 4 surgeries in a little over a year. There was the banding, removal of a port due to an infected port incision, replacement of the port, and repositioning of the band due to slippage. My last surgery was in January. I found out two weeks ago that I have slipped again. I had another set of x-rays done yesterday and they said there was minimal improvement. My doctor is out of town until next week, so I met with his PA. She said if I were her patient she would be scheduling another repositioning surgery for me next week. I asked my doctor's nurse what she thought he would want to do, and she said she thought he would want to replace my band with the larger 10cc band. He wanted to before, but the last slippage was pretty severe and I needed surgery pretty quickly. My insurance hadn't approved anything before I went in, and he said he didn't want to stick me with an even higher bill if they didn't pay. I'm really, really tired of having surgery. If there was a guarantee that this would be the last one, I would say okay to the larger band. However, we all know there isn't. Part of me wants to ask him to lobby my insurance company for a bypass. I don't want to have my intestines re-routed, but it's preferable to having 4 surgeries a year. At the very least, I'm going to ask if I can have a few more weeks to see if it gets any better. FTR, when things were going well with the band, I loved it. I would still recommend it to anyone considering it. I'm just not sure my body is a good match for it. What would you do? Get a larger band and cross your fingers? Get a by-pass? Or just have the whole thing removed and accept the fact that I'll always be fat? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-

    *sigh*

Hang in there. I have read many posts where people say restriction can kick in a week or more after a fill. Wait a couple of weeks. If you still don't have any restriction, call and see if you can get another fill. It may take 3-4 before you get any real restriction. Until then, stay eating as healthy as possible and know that it should get easier in the future.
  9. Wow!!!Congrats on the fast weight loss. I am one of the slow losers....I had my surgery last July and am down only 60 lbs. That's a bit slower than my surgeon wants me to lose, but he tries to adjust the band to where I can lose no more than 3 lbs or less than 1 pound a week. He really likes it when I lose 2 lbs a week. So I am going to have to go back for another fill soon. I have 7cc's in my 10cc band now and hope that the next fill gets me closer to the "sweet spot". I am really impressed with your will power and the weight loss. Don't think I could stand a whole pound of baby carrots, even though I like them a lot!!

    The Diet ?

Everyone is correct my plan vs my husbands plan were totally different. Pre-op Me: 3 Protein shakes 2 weeks prior high protein no-low carb one meal per day day before surgery all Clear Liquids Hubby: 3 Protein Shakes 2 weeks prior, as many leaf greens he wanted, one meal high protein Post op: Me: 3 days clear liquids, 28 days full liquids, 2 months soft foods, then begin progressing and adding as sleeve is comfortable Hubby: 1 day clear liquids, 1 week full liquids, 1 month 1 shake a day and whatever soft foods, month 2 eliminate shakes (his doctor wanted him getting his protein from food opposed to supplements) We are both doing great and followed our doctors plans, with the exception of his post-op he waited a bit longer to progress than one week. Just get your doctors or nuts (if they work together) plan and follow that, if you have questions ask! They are there for you!
  11. Hi guys, Well, I guess it is my turn to start a new thread. I am really wondering about fills and whether I should have another one or not. I would appreciate your opinions and thoughts. I am still losing well (better than I thought only 3 lbs to go to hit my Christmas goal- I am averaging around 2.5 lbs per week). But it is a lot of work to get there. I am scheduled for a fill on November 29th and since I have to fly down to get it, it is kind of important that I do it when I can. But... I have had no problems - no pb's no getting stuck. Yep I have restriction but that's it. And I am going to my in-laws for 2 weeks at Christmas and I don't want to be so tight that it is crazy. So... all of this to say... should I get a fill or wait until after Christmas. I am sure like many of you that I am terrified of not getting it done and then gaining weight (do we ever loose that fear?). I would love your thoughts out there. Thanks, Dawn Banded April 4th, 2006 Montreal :help:
  12. Dr. Tells me clear liquids for two weeks. So please tell me what this means? Pre op diet

I was strictly low carb for the week before surgery. I was drinking low carb EAS protein shakes and eating baked chicken breast or baked pork loin. I didn't really count calories as much as I tracked my carbs, trying to stay below 10 carbs per day. I lost 10lbs that week.
  15. Well I'm a huge believer in tae bo, even before I had my surgery I was working out to the dvds and lost 35 pounds. That was about 2 years pre-op though and before I had a kid lol. But now post-op I'm doing tae bo 5 days a week or more and he has strength training embedded in the workouts with cardio. It's worth a try. It works wonders for me. I got tired of just the treadmill I felt like I was getting stuck in a endless routine, and also felt like I was not working all the parts of my body, even with incline like you said. Try it out, you will see results, I'm dripping with sweat even though I've been doing it for a while now, every time I finish I still feel like it's a great challenge for my body. :coolgleamA:

    This is SO hard !

Band 07 and Jennifer I had my RNY on Good Friday. I have been sick everyday for a whole month. During my first week check-up I had lose 14 pounds. The next week I was dizzy, exhausted, constipated, I was waiting for the new found energy. I was in the hospital for 5 days for dehydration. I was stuck in every spot in my arm looking for a vein for the IV and to get blood(one time I was stuck 8 times, because the IV came out ). I never realized it was so hard to drink Water.Eat and take pills wait 30 mins..drink water . Lets not even talk about attempting to get in all the Protein. I have also had my times when I cry and feel depressed. I guess I just needed to vent . Hopefully, we'll be feeling better soon and start to enjoy our journey.

    Hungry since surgery? 5%

The depression is probably not caused by feeling hunger, since depression is defined as sadness, lethargy and loss of will that has no discernible cause. If it were as simple as stimuli, the 21 lbs you've lost in the past few weeks should have you elated and ecstatic! I had a sleeve, not a bypass but my hunger didn't disappear overnight. The liquids phases were especially tough as I was missing the satiety and chewing from eating proper foods. If you're feeling depressed, I would recommend talking to a mental health care professional about finding a therapist. No amount of "cheer up!" Is going to help with depression.
  19. I can tell you this much - I am post-op about 9 months out and I track with My Fitness Pal - I often have a difficult time making the 1200 calories but I have been stuck at the same weight now for weeks. I also get the warnings and it is sooooo frustrating!! I am working my butt off, I'm eating healthy - no cheating and my weight won't budge. I'm ready to tear my hair out. So pre-op I wouldn't worry about it too much - just do what your surgeon asked you to do. Post-op (once you are back to solid foods) I'd really try to get as close to 1200 as you can. Has anyone else experienced this??

    This is SO hard !

I had the RNY on 04/13/15. My doctor set all the right expectations for someone who hasn't actually had the surgery. My expectations were off because my friend had her RNY in August 2014 and she was back to work in 4 days. I planned on giving myself 2 weeks. Now 3 weeks post-surgery and I'm still home. I have had severe fatigue, dizziness, nausea and trouble with hydration and Protein. I was told 64 oz of Fluid, but I've found to maximize my energy and avoid dehydration associated nausea and vomiting, I actually need 80oz per day. The first few soft things I tried did not stay down. I can't eat eggs at all. I've had no hunger at all (or cravings, yay!), so I had to pay attention to my body for other signs. My indigestion that isn't resolved with Water is my new hungry. I still haven't figured out what full feels like yet, so I eat very little. I figure it will come with time. I am starting to get some of my energy back, but I do get exhausted after just a couple hours of any activity - Church, grocery store, etc. - regardless of the intensity level. The point: Everyone is different, and no one's journey will be exactly the same. The wonderful dietitian at the clinic described the food progression as an experiment. It was a very apt description. I have had a couple of "Why did I do this?" teary-eyed moments, and I expect I'll have more. However, I wouldn't change it. Despite the fatigue, I'm already feeling better about myself. Good luck! Keep us posted, and I hope things go well for you moving forward.

    Will I Ever Get There?

Things to pay attention to: - Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), this is the amount of calories your body needs in a day just to exist (think in a coma, alive but not moving). BMR drops as we lose weight and as we get older. So it's something that should be calculated and monitored with WLS. https://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/bmr - Your water intake, you stated that you try to hit your protein targets, which is great, but your body just cannot break down fat if there isn't enough water. - 3.5 miles 2x a week isn't near enough. The minimum basic goal is 30 mins of targeted physical activity EVERY DAY, for WLS, it really should be 60+. Also, running is great, but running will **ONLY** lean out muscle, if you want to burn more fat minute to minute, you need to be building muscle mass. - Without seeing (or being a doctor specifying in plastics) It's entirely possible to have 20 lbs of excess skin - Have you had your body fat measured? I'd be interested to see what your lean mass to fat mass numbers are. I'm 5'9 currently at 258.9, 37.2% body fat, My scale calculates that I have 162.7 lbs of lean muscle and 96.2 lbs of fat. I'm shooting for 200 lbs, so if I do make it to 200, I'll still have 37.3 lbs of fat that *could* be worked off if I really wanted to, this doesn't count skin weight though. If you are really stuck/stalled and frustrated, try re-doing the pre-surgical diet to "reset" things. I also highly suggest starting to track your intake and burn again, if you are burning more than you are taking in, you *WILL* lose weight.

    Help! Painful Drinking

I had my surgery 8/19 and I cant drink cold or hot.. pretty much room temp for me right now. I have gone through almost every glass in my house until I found a glass that allows me to sip not gulp.. the gulping pain is gas/air. also dont be scared to ask a pharmacist for some medicine cups and drink out of them until you get the hang of it. I wasnt getting enough liquid so found that chicken noodle(less) Soup is it for me 8oz,. I have it for lunch ( i kept the veggies but ditched the noodles) I add one scoop of Protein powder unflavored to it. It takes me several hours to get through it but its liquid and protein.. I struggled after surgery with the Protein shakes. This week I have had three days stomach pain free.. remember you are healing inside

  25. 7.5 months post op. I get between 900-1100 calories a day. Just saw my NUT last week, she wants me closer to the 1100 than the 900 and wanted me to up my carbs to about 100 grams a day so I've been working on that.
