  1. I am trying to do what Susie in Lima talked about. My surgery date is 7/22 and my pre-op liquid diet starts 7/8. I began thinking...it's going to be like going from 0 - 60 if I don't do anything at all before the liquid diet starts, so I started doing things a little at a time. Three weeks ago, I gave up all soda and carbonated drinks as well as all caffeine except one cup of morning coffee. The week after that I started experimenting with protein powders and started to eat high protein low carb meals. This week I gave up that last cup of coffee and I have a double protein shake for my breakfast (2 scoops powder and 1 bottle water) Next week I plan on starting some treadmill and nautilus activities. I just couldn't imagine doing a liquid diet without doing any of this other stuff, and it really does make a difference. I'm eating the right foods and I'm really feeling much better
  2. I'm in my first day preop and I'm STARVING! I'm allowed 2 shakes and one 4 oz protein and 1/2 cup green veggies. In between I can have 2 servings of each: broth, jello & Popsicles (sugar free of coarse)
  3. Today had my first appt w/nutritionist, one scheduled for next week, then I'm done, then it all gets submitted to my insurance (BCBS), fingers crossed, c'mon BCBS!!!

How much did you lose on your 2 week preop diet?

I lost 16 in the first week. I'm in the middle of week 2 and haven't lost any. :\ very frustrating - especially since my liquid diet IS a liquid diet - no actual meals. I know what I lost the first week was mainly water weight.
  5. I have the same problem! I had a gastric sleeve 6 years ago electively, meaning I didn't medically qualify, but I was overweight enough for the surgeon to agree to do it. I initially lost 45 lbs and kept it off, but it eventually all came back. I exercise regularly and eat healthy whole foods with wine being my big vice I recently enlisted the help of a personal trainer/nutritionist who tells me that I have damaged my metabolism by eating such low calories for years (I now average around 1200 - 1400 including wine calories) so that my body is in starvation mode. He has me trying to get 140g of protein/1750 calories a day which is a challenge while working out 3 - 4 x a week. I wonder if long term we are hurting our bodies by eating such a low calorie diet for prolonged period of time?
  6. My favorite pureed food was........two scoops of Protein powder over ice and Water.......shake, stir and enjoy. Sorry....I didn't do pureed food stage. I was scared of it. I needed the extra time on shakes to get me further away from food, in general. I need those extra weeks to simply stay the course and redefine my thoughts and responses to foods. I had to approach it this way for my own well being. Glad I did.

    this is me...then

I got banded on Jan. 27,2007. I felt GREAT! I was back to work on Monday following my surgery. With the restriction of no lifting. I am pretty much doing everything that I did before- only more of it! I went for a 2 mile hike this weekend, & I am going to go again this weekend...I have lost a total of 37 lbs since my surgery. March 31st will be exactly 8 weeks since my surgery. I know things have really slowed down now, which can be disapointing, b/c you get to be on such a high each day like"wow, another 2 lbs!" Now it feels like "damn, no more weight gone?" But I keep on Truckin...I am trying to walk @ least 4 days a week. Cant afford to go to a gym right now, since we are trying to move back to California. But I think it is still good. I cant 'weight' to get to my goal weight, but I am also realistic... well my only concern that I have is that I worry that the band will slip of that the Dr. wont be able to fill it for some reason or another. I just have to keep faith that everything will remain fine. If you want to talk ...Email me!
  8. I'm on the puree stage for the next 2 weeks. According to the menu my doc gave me I have to eat 7 times a day. Most meals involve dairy, except lunch and dinner where I can have mashed potatoes and some pureed meat and pureed veg. I'm not the biggest potato fan. So I was wondering, what did you guys eat? I'd love some really tasty and creative meal suggestions. Thanks!

    Gift for myself!

I've been thinking that since I have 2 months to prepare both mentally and otherwise, I would go ahead and start collecting little things for my new life. I'm traveling Mon - Thurs this week to New Orleans for work, so when I get back I'm going to take a nice box and cut off the top, then find some wrapping paper that makes me squeal with delight and put a big bow on it. This will be my gift to myself to celebrate my new birthday. I'll add things to it as I find them over the next few months. I'll start a tradition of giving myself a special gift (non-food, of course) every year on the anniversary of my new tummy! I was in the grocery store on Sunday and found the greatest little things that I think will be super helpful for post op, once I'm on semi-solids and solids. They are these adorable little 1 C. containers that come complete with a little removable ice pack that sits inside the lid. I've read that most sleevers won't come close to 1 C. of food for a long time (if ever), but these were the smallest ones I could find. I can't wait to use these little boogers, and of course the pink one is my favorite! I've also got some adorable little cocktail forks and spoons that will make me take itsy-bitsy little bites of food. I'm hoping to find more of those in cute designs. If anyone has any suggestions for my gift box to myself, I'm all ears!

ugh...unflavored proteing powder mixed with pink lemonade crystal light is not great but tolerable... Anyway, I am getting sorta frustrated. I have my friend that goes to WW with me and she has no idea what I am doing. I have not told her since through conversations past I know that she is anti-surgery. Very judgemental about the whole thing as a matter of fact. I think it is fear mostly. She says that if you just suck it up and stick to a program, that is all it takes. I just say to her that I am not going to judge since I think different means work for different people and the bottom line is finding what works for you. No way is better than the other (although statistically, diets only work what- 5% of the time?). Well, she calls me a lot to see what I am eating and how I am doing. I feel like as of next week, I am going to be lying to her about everything. What can I do though. I have no desire to tell her the truth because I don't feel like having to justify my decision to someone who is not open minded at all. It is not the end of the world, I am just frustrated. I wish I could distance myself but I don't know how.....

    Port Moving?

Hi. I couldn't exactly 'place' mine initially but then I suppose I didn't want to touch it incase I unsettled it. I'm over 6 weeks post op now and mine tends to sit below and to the left of my scar. As I'm sitting now, it feels it's only an inch below. The port is stitched to your muscle so won't seem to go far but as we're losing weight/body fat, things will shrink and reposition slightly. My port does sit slightly tilted so that could give the impression of moving but it was no problem when I had a fill. Before I had my band, I joined my local support group for banders/bypassers and sleevers and had a feel of 3 peoples ports. They all felt very different and the positions varied.
  12. I had GERD before sleeve surgery. In the past, I had some pretty bad bouts of it where it caused chest pain. I also had GERD pretty bad with the band. I'd also go long periods with nothing, so it was a mystery. When I started looking into another bariatric surgery, my surgeon cautioned me, but continued to perform pre-op testing. The doctor felt that my GERD was "situational", meaning that it was related to diet and obesity. So, we decided it was worth the risk, but he warned that there were no guarantees that I wouldn't have GERD after the sleeve. I had surgery on 4/10/18 and about 3 weeks afterwards, I started getting heartburn. I started on Nexium right away and the symptoms are well controlled with it. I wouldn't say that it's severe or "intractable" as my psych evaluator so kindly put it. It's just a little bit of heartburn and if I eat too late in the evening, I will wake with a sore throat (easily remedied by sleeping on an inclined bed). My advice, discuss with your doctor. Every person is different and every person will respond differently.
  13. Thank you all I'm at 3 weeks and cleared to fly. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. So it happened today! I graduated to full liquids! It's been 2 very long weeks on clears and I am so happy that for the next 2 weeks I get to eat full liquids! pudding, Cream Soup, and V8 here I come!! Any suggestions besides the ones I listed for full liquids?
  15. Just wanted to share with everyone that I reached my goal in 4 and 1/2 months!!! I started as a 50 y.o. lightweight with surgery weight of 213 and today I am at my goal of 145 - that's 68 lbs lost in a little over 4 months. I set my goal at 145 because it is a normal BMI (I am 5'5") and should be easy to maintain. But I think I will go for 10 more pounds to 135. This hasn't been the easy way out since I worked for every single pound lost. I did not just let the sleeve do the work - I have been exercising since surgery starting with walking 3 miles/day and then adding in biking. I am currently biking around 75-100+ miles a week along with brisk walking most days (Yes I do work full-time also and have a family). I have had no problems, can eat anything and have never been sick from the sleeve. I have been good about staying on the diet of 800 calories with 30 grams of carbs. I figured I had 80% of my stomach removed and paid thousands of dollars out of pocket I was going to work this thing as hard as I could. I haven't dealt with any hair loss yet but don't think I am totoally out of the woods since I recently read that for some it doesn't start until 6 months post-op. But I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am not going to go for plastics because everything has recovered just fine and should continue to get better as I add more weight training into my workouts. I think the girls are better than before now that all that back fat is gone! Yuk. So for those of you just researching good luck and I do recommend the sleeve. I am not going to say I love my sleeve like most people do - don't get me wrong I like it A LOT. But I think I will save the proclamation of love for a year out when I see how well I do with maintenance. Best of luck to everyone. Frankie VSG 3/22/10 Dr Aceves

    5 day pouch test

Stept04, It is something that veteran banders do to get back to basics. You should not be doing it until you are at least a year out. I started it today, but next Monday marks three years for me. I have never done it, but am before my husband comes home. We all fall off "the wagon" here and there...and so many of us learn to eat around our bands (e.g. slider foods, and junk food) and supposedly, it is. Reminder to utilize your tool and get back to eating the way we did/do at the beginning of our journey. THAT being said, I am SO glad for the first two days I was not planning on going far from home!!

    Wow, I can't believe it....

I am glad to hear you are not sore in port area anymore. I love to sleep on my left side and when I try, I can feel port and it is very uncompfortable. I have to move on my back or on right side. It has been a little frustrating. But maybe that will be more compfortable next week. I hope so.:whoo::clap2:

How Many Fills To Adequate Restriction?

hi sarah. i was banded in may of 2011. i had 3 fills that took me to good restriction, went in for fill 4 and was too tight for 2 weeks. got 2 emergency unfills and a 5th fill and now i feel like i'm at good restriction. i dont think using fluro helps you get to the green zone faster. my doc uses it also. everyone is sooo different and if anyone tells you that after a certain fill you will have the right restriction...dont listen to them...no one can tell you that at a certain number of cc's in your band is when you get restriction. yeah dont get caught up in the how many cc's are in your band either cuz it's only relevant to your band. i know i am close to 8 cc's in my band but for someone else that could be too tight or not tight enough. i hear you about the being impatient, but unfortunalty with the band we have to be patient. best wishses in your journey. feel free to PM with any questions, i am more than willing to share my experiences so far. jennifer

    looking for support

Being scared is normal. You will all do great. This surgery is minimally invasive and if you understand how to eat and have good support after your surgery you will be fine. I am four weeks out and have lost 40 lbs total. 20 in the pre op phase and 20 since surgery. I would do this all over again on a minute. Just wish I had it done sooner. Stay calm and stay focused on the result of all your prep work. Keep us posted.

    Countdown to the big day.

I agree that it can get the best of you. I hadn't even gotten my approval yet and I'm was scared because I didnt want to make the decision to do something in which I may never wake up from but I've heard so many success story's. I also met someone at a baby shower two weeks ago and she happen to be talking to me about and suddenly she came out and said that she had gotten the band and how she had it fore two years and it was the best decision of her life. She looks fantastic and she was so proud of her decision and for me that was a sign from God that everything would be ok. I hope this has helped you in some way.
