  1. Was banded 10/07. First 3 yrs were amazing. Lost 105lbs. Felt great. Confidence was great. Now 3yrs after that with a revision of the band surgery on my belt I've gained 70lbs back. I can eat anything portions are out of control. I know it's a tool but if I could diet /exercise I would've done it without surgery. I don't know what to do. Going in for yet another fill dec 2nd. Any ideas?? I feel defeated.

What revision did you have done?

Need to convert from band to ?????

Ohhh, so much to write! When you have a slip and have it surgically revised you stand a 70% chance of another slip in the first five years. You can't live with reflux for long, it can cause Barretts Esophagus. The band does this often. FANTASTIC! You really can't get a fill when you have severe reflux anyway regardless of restriction. If the band itself is causing your problems a fill is going to make it worse. This makes me angry, if one procedure is what you want then you should have been referred to someone who does the procedure. It's like REALLY wanting a brand new car and coming home with a used moped. Your nutritionist is a dolt. You lost well with a working band. If any of us could do this without a tool we would. If your tool isn't working you aren't going to lose as well as you would with something that works for you. Bands are not effective for higher BMI folks, they just aren't. The more you have to lose the less likely you are to get to goal with a band. You might get there but it's unlikely that you'll stay there. HIS surgery failed therefore YOU are not committed? Look, only you know if you can do this with restriction alone. Nobody else can make that decision for you. I'm all for a dose of reality when it is needed but with your good weight loss when your band was working and the lack of weight loss now that you have reflux and issues that are clear in that you should NOT be getting a fill, how is this your fault? Maybe you aren't telling us the whole story, could be. But I doubt that, I think with the symptoms you are having it's pretty clear the band isn't for you. Nope. If you weren't angry I'd question if you really understand what's happening. ;o) Of course you can fly. You just need to take simple precautions. Get up and walk up and down the plane every hour or so. I drove 3 hours home after my surgery. I was a revision too, band to sleeve. I was totally good at two weeks but I went to work right away when I came home. You first need to make sure you want this surgeon doing your VSG. How many has he done? Does he do leak tests? Which ones? How many leaks has he had? Infections? How many nights in the hospital? Does your insurance cover sleeves? There is a great deal of information to know. It's possible but unlikely. RNY folks lose it faster but VSG folks lose very well, MUCH better than banded folks.

Need to convert from band to ?????

Actually, I give it less than a week. ;o))))) I just emailed Alex to ask if I can tell and he said yes. The new sleeve forum will be: GastricSleeveTalk.com He's been working on this for a couple of months. He asked me a long time ago if I would moderate that board and a ..... (drum roll please).... a REVISION forum! He has other ideas in mind but I'm not sure what they are all about. I'm not sure if we belong more on the new sleeve forum or the new revision forum sooooooo, I guess we just add both to bookmarked sites! HA! So this is all very cool... We get our own forum(s)! I heart Alex!
  5. Hi Gary, I just went for my first fill this morning (under flouro) and found out that my port had flipped. My doctor was extremely apologetic and said that a relatively simple outpatient procedure would take care of the problem. Basically, he's going to schedule me for a revision where I'll be put under again, though not as intensely as for the original surgery. Then, they open up the port area, turn and relocate it, then stitch me back up. He said I'd be off work a day and would have to take it easy thereafter, but he assured me that all would be fine afterwards, albeit a bit sore. Of course, I'm concerned, but I'm not freaked out about it. I know it happens and have a friend who went through the very same thing and has been incredibly successful with her weight loss. But I do know one thing for sure...I'm going to make him promise to sew that baby down like crazy this time!!!
  6. Hi had surgery last Friday June 10. Last 2 days lower right abdomen pain feels like gas but does not go away. Diarhea (sp) for 2 days. Please tell me this is ok. I have had 2 prior bypass surgeries and have gone through hell... I can't go through another revision or complications. Waiting to hear from Doctor...

    Size of sleeve??

Well during my pre- op today I found out he does a 40. He explained that less was just in millimeters and his experience is anything less than a 38 puts you at a greater risk of problem including mal-absorption and ultimately leading to a bypass. I have to trust that he knows this to be true and am content with his explanation- worst case scenario in 10-20 years I need a revision. to my revision.. lol...

When Will I Not Be Hungry?

To add to this I think that because I had a lapband revision to sleeve I had learned how small portions keep you full and the difference between real hunger and not. Please understand that I speak as a former fat person too. It is very hard to go from a large quantity eater to eating only two ounces, knowing that you are full and then having to understand that you DON"T need more food in two hours. I think the work "starving" is a little strong here, are you really starving? People living in third world countries are starving. I think we are so focused in the beginning on food that yes it is very difficult for some to differentiate between the two. It's not hunger. If anyone would care to answer: what is your hunger queue? My stomach makes noises, but it is not hunger just gurgling noises, not hunger.
  9. Hello Sleevers! For the few weeks I have joined this forum, I have been introduced to a community of caring, wonderful, supportive peeps--some mentors and some at the beginning of this journey like me. To all those wonderful and brave souls, thank you. I am going in to surgery today with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. Let me start by saying I have always been generally risk averse. So, it would make sense that my journey with WLS started at the lap band some 9 years ago, or as others have appropriately coined it "the crap band." The lap band was a series of disappointments...mostly in myself. But long story short is that I lost 45 lbs while training for a marathon the first 3 years but really, aside from the first 25 lbs associated with the post-op diet, the band didn't really help much in my weight loss journey. Instead it encouraged me to eat sliders and forced me to slime at inconsistent times but usually when trying to eat in front of new people (who didnt know or need to know about my band) or when eating healthy foods. Over the years the weight crept back along with worse and worse eating habits. More alarming was all the data about failure, slips, revisions, and the long term complications with having some silicone in your body (duh). I knew I needed to get this piece of crap out of me...but was afraid to balloon up without something... But for not succeeding with the band, I take full responsibility. I know if I stuck to weight watchers and kept running every day then I would have maintained my 28-29 BMI. Great! If I could stay on weight watchers my entire life and run everyday well then, I wouldn't need this sort of help, would I? Back to risk aversion--that explains why I am 1000 miles from home, in a foreign country, by myself getting major abdominal revision surgery. I am trying to take a measured risk here. Dr. Aceves is at the top of his profession and no one has more revisions under his belt than this Tom Selleck mustached genius. As a testament to his fan base, there are two other gals with getting surgery on the same day as me. One gal is accompanied by her daughter (Aceves July, 2011) who lost 100 lbs and is super cute, and another gal who is coming back after 7 years to get her band revised. Both ladies know Aceves and have enough confidence to come back. So....I am on my way. Wheeeeeeeee! kisses Sylvia Mom

    Attending a Seminar, then what?

Honestly every process is different, after I attended my free siminar they sent us home with a packet that was basicaly about our weight history and such. After getting my packet they sent me to my general health doctor so I could get a check-up and to get a letter of recomendation to send to the insurance company [b/c the lapband dr. can't do it due to he would be making money off of it, and the insurance companies won't accept it]. After these steps it's really dependant on what insurance you have, and how long it takes you to do things [b/c if you are like me i have work and school and tend to put all other things off for as long as possible...i am a huge procrastinator.] with my insurance company (United Healthcare) they require a 5year weight history (for me this was the longest part of the process took me about a month and a 1/2). When I was done getting all of that together my nurse at the surgical clinic who is handeling my case put all my information into a packet which would go to the insurance company for them to review and then decide if they would cover the surgery. My nurse told me that the revision process could take about 90 days, but I recieved a call from her 3 days later and she told me I was approved. Now all I have to do is attend a meeting, and we are setteling on a final date today [more then likely april 6th]. so all together it took me about 4 or 5 months (that come and go quickly) not very long considering how long I have been unhappy and uncomfortable in my own skin due to being overweight. Hope this helps...but usually it is different for everyone, and it really stinks for those whose insurance companies require a 6 month doctor monitored diet...but remember the juice is always worth the squeze. good luck =]
  11. Congrats! Don't be scared. PLENTY of women don't wait the required 12-18 months. If you have had good progress with weight loss, life adjustment, psychological needs, etc that come with life with a band, then you can relax. I think the complaint I hear most from newly pregnant bandsters is they didn't lose enough weight beforehand, or they are scared of the weight gain that they worked so hard to lose. I got pregnant 8 months out after losing about 50 lbs. Depending on your restriction, your band doc can't "require" an unfill. This is your body and your baby and your choice of weight management. I had decent restriction but not overly tight prior to pregnancy and I haven't had tons of issues with the band so far, so I'm comfortable leaving the fill in as long as possible, hopefully the whole time. Some of us have VERY tight fills, and I think you may run into some issues if thats you. Other women found their band incredibly tight in the first few weeks and had to get unfilled simply to be able to eat at all. My advice would be to watch your band, if it gets too tight for too long, then unfill. I have days where mine is tight, others it's fine. I've never gone more than 1 or 2 days at a time with it being super tight, or I would unfill. Also, if you get major morning sickness, UNFILL! You don't wanna have to have band revision surgery due to a slippage.
  12. Congratulations on your revision AND making it to Onederland! I was fortunate enough not to require a drain, but I hear people feel a world of difference once it is out. Don't get worried if your weight loss slows as the first week can be a week of losing all the fluids they pumped in you during your procedure. Soon, you will get to the phase where you are burning fat, but remember it will also burn muscle, so be sure to get as close as you can to your Protein requirements. Good luck and again, CONGRATS!
  13. Since 2001 I've have a laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, an exploratory laparoscopic surgery, a revised Nissen Fundoplication and a laparoscopic hysterectomy. My surgeon planned on my surgery being a 2 hour laparoscopic RNY and hiatal hernia repair, but my surgery switched to an open after 9 hours as a lap. The extra 7 hours of lap time was due to adhesions. The switching to an open was due to how fragile my pouch tissue was (due to the Nissen), it became difficult to attach my small intestine to it. In total the surgery went over 12 hours.
  14. Getting my lap-band revised to RNY was one of the best decisions that I have ever made! There have been ups and downs since my surgery in May but it has all been worth it. I have lost more weight in these last 3 months than I ever did with the band. I am just 3 lbs away from this fabled place I hear of called "one-derland", I can't wait to see 199 on that scale!! I wish you luck on your new journey, you truly deserve some things to go your way after such a long struggle.
  15. Yes, I did. I had my band removed, the sleeve done, a hiatal hernia repaired, adhesions removed, and gall bladder removed all at once. I don't really remember how long the surgery was - I was asleep :P ! But the recovery was no worse than getting the band, I just had more "holes" this time around. So it CAN be done. It was nice because I was self-pay for WLS, but my insurance pd for the other procedures, so I was able to save money on the revision.
  16. Good luck with your surgery in the AM. I got revised 4/15. Highest weight 311, Surgery weight 288, Current weight 243. I did good with my sleeve till the I fractured my spine. I developed a hernia and my GERD was rediculous. Then I got a pregnant a year later and only continued the weight gain with post partum depression. Doing great mentally and physically now, steady weight loss but I am right on par considering the meds I have to take slow it down. Sent from my SM-G973U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Hello, I didn't have a revision but I choose Bypass due to already having severe GERD. My surgeon explained that it was very likely my GERD would remain the same if not worsen and that bypass would likely reduce or completely cure it. Almost 4 months out it seems to have CURED IT! I have had no signs of anything acid reflux/GERD related. I was on 2 prescriptions plus eating tums daily. I am off of ALL GERD medications and have not eaten a single tums since surgery. I am so pleased about that because it was miserable! As far as weight loss, I have lost 73 lbs since surgery in a little over 2.5 months. I am 6ft tall. Stats are on the side panel too if people set them up. Good luck- I hope your acid issues are resolved!
  18. I had a sleeve to RNY revision for GERD. I did not have reflux before my sleeve, developed it a couple of years later. I was on the maximum dosage of omeprazole (80mg) for a few years and still had breakthrough acid, which gave me an esophageal stricture. I regurgitated everything I swallowed. Still, I didn't want RNY, so I found a surgeon who was willing to explore alternative surgeries with me. However, after a bunch more testing that uncovered some previously unknown issues, I decided on RNY. Had the surgery on 6/29. I had one episode of reflux two days after surgery, I figured it was the last bits of acid in my stomach trying to make me miserable one last time. No acid since. No regurgitation. No vomiting. It has been a massive relief not to wake up in the middle of the night with acid in my mouth or throat. I am really pleased with the RNY so far.

I had port revision...it was a lot easier than actual first lapband surgery. I'm glad you insurance covers it! Good luck!

    US vs. Mexico?

Hi.... Find out how long the process is through your insurance. If it's too long of a wait/process then check out "Beliteweight." I went through them to finance my surgeries. First I had lap band by Dr. Rodriguez in TIJUANA, Mexico in 2013 and now I am having revision surgery to the sleeve. Dr. R is the best!! I can let you know how my sleeve surgery goes if you want. It is scheduled 3/24.

    Concerned

My being afraid of bypass is what led me to the disasterous decision to do a band to begin with. I have realized very much the hard way that I should not make medical decisions based on things I am afraid of that I have no expertise whatsoever in and that I should listen to the people who do have the expertise. I went to my revision doctor wanting the sleeve. He suggested bypass as a better option. Thankfully this time i listened. I ultimately realized this was the best course to take to avoid the risk of yet another revision. And I'm done with bariatric surgery! He was right and I'm mad at myself for wasting 11 years of my life in denial with the band where I could have just had success and eliminated my health issues in one fell swoop instead of trading them in for The new ones the band caused.
  23. ive been dealing the UHC since May now waiting to see if they are going to pay for my revision but after talking to them today they said #1 my bmi is only 30 and #2 my insurance will only cover 1 bariatric surgery for lifetime. It's still at the insurance waiting patiently to find out. i guess what i'm needing to know if anyone with UHC had a revision with a bmi less then 35 and UHC cover it???

insurance pay from lap band to sleeve

I am sorry you got denied. I would still try to appeal...also just a thought, most companies have open enrollment starting in November for January 1st. Could it be possible there is a different plan that might be offered by your employer that you could change to? I would contact your HR Rep and maybe see about this. I would still do the removal, especially if you are having issues, then maybe (fingers crossed) you could get the revision through an updated plan??? My employer, or husbands, is with UHC. My lap band was covered with UHC with a different employer. It was very easy, just had to show 5 years of weight and co morbidities if needed, which I had. Was approved the first time, no hoops. No NUT to deal with or anything. I was sure trying to get the revision I was going to run into issues. Still with UHC but with a different employer. But it was approved the first time, still just needed to show the 5 year weight history, co morbidities, etc. Just found out I was approved for removal and to get either the sleeve or RNY. Still not sure which one I am going with, so surgeon advised of both to them. Scheduled for surgery 12/4. I wish everyone could have it that easy. I thought for sure I was going to be rejected. Some how the stars lined up and pushed me through. But I really hope maybe some plan change etc could be done to get you approved for next year? I would not give up hope and really talk to someone in your companies HR to see what is written in for the plan. Like someone else said, each company is different. I used to work for UHC as a rep for the companies, and most don't know that it is their employer that actually sets the plan limits. Some employers are self insured, meaning that all UHC does is manage the plan and your employer pays all the medical cost to a certain point, like hitting max out of pocket, then UCH pays. Then there are other employers that are fully insured, meaning UCH (or any health insurance for that matter) pays all the claims and they have control over what is approved or not. So a lot of it depends on your employer. Wish I could offer more help than that, but hopefully that gives you a little more something to work on. Best of luck to you!!!
  25. Kim, so did you get your port replaced? If so, how are you doing now? I'm having the same problem you described and am looking at having a port revision, but am waiting until end of May so I don't have to take so mcuh time off work. Hope everything went well for you, please let me know.
