  1. Mind telling me what your allotted calories and carbs are each day? I am also a revision patient and have a bigger pouch. I didn't get any guidelines as to what that should look like other than 5 small meals a day.
  2. I was hoping to find more of you out and about in this site! My surgery is Monday (RNY revision from a 16 year old VBG gone awry). I was diagnosed fibro about 5 years ago and was wondering if the surgery was going to throw me into a flare. I had to give up my methotrexate 2 weeks ago and for the next 3 months and I already notice a difference! Any real fibro difference with weight loss? Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App
  3. Bypass is only a tool, and is not a cure all. We now have the responsibility to use this tool and plan, track and manage our intake and exercise to get and stay where we need to be at. I could see that if I did not plan and stick to the macros, even with a pouch, I could over eat calories and carbs to derail my progress. I too can eat anything and no real dumping. Also, due to revision, I have a much larger pouch than many others, and the volume I can eat at a sitting can seem huge. Luckily small amounts keeps me satisfied, I eat 5 to 6 small meals a day, and do not go over my allotted calories and carbs each day. Each of us has a different challenge, and ours is our bypass does not control fully what we can eat. Good luck.

    Six week liquid diet!

Well, for me this wasn't actually my plan. I was sent to the bariatric center because my other doctor couldn't do an EGD (she couldn't get the scope down). Once this got started the surgery part became medically necessary. It was either take out the ring or take out the ring and do a revision. I kinda got thrown into this rather quickly. This has all happened since April or May. Then, once they started to set up a surgery date I only got 2 weeks notice! I freaked out that first couple days and ate a lot of chocolate, but have calmed down to just occasional ice cream and such. Lol Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App

  6. Hi beautiful people. A couple weeks ago i posted a thread about having had a failed lap band (due to bad actual complications) and then a failed sleeve (will post original post at the end). Today i went to the doctor, after telling him everything he was a bit appalled, and immediately recommended the duodenal switch. I feel like a failure, but he made me feel great and didn't put me down, willing to help me so much. I'm so happy! Anyone have any advice? thanks!! original post: Hello. i'm new on here. just want to share my story to seek advice. when i was 15 back in 2008, i got the lap band. it was the worst experience ever. i was only loosing weight because i threw up EVERY SINGLE bit of food i ate. i lost 80lb very very quickly and i was extremely sick. my doctor said it shouldn't be happening, so instead of trying to fix it he drained my band. After a year i started to gain weight. In 2012 i was revised to the gastric sleeve. at this time, this procedure was brand new to my doctor, he hadn't done it before. I got it done quickly after the appointments with him, maybe 3 months. i was a slow loser for a whole year. it took me a year to lose 70 pounds, even eating what i thought was healthy (Protein first and some vegetables and brown rice, wha i was taught). i wasn't never really taught about carbs at all, always just eat "whole grain everything but eat your protein first and you should be fine" none of the information that i learned now from the fb group. i got into my first relationship, went to the DR and was diagnosed with PCOS, like lots of girls are. I was put on birth control and as soon as i did my weight **** up. as it shot up and me not knowing why i threw myself into a mind change that i couldn't shake out. while working 2 jobs (13 hour days) i began to lose care about myself, and regained most my weight, shooting back up to 230. i hadn't noticed the weight gain for a while, either because i'd stopped weighing myself. last year i started to exercise and count my calories and lost 20 lbs. even continuing it again, i have not budged. My mom just had the sleeve, and can eat WAY less then i ever was able to. I am kind of jealous Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Six week liquid diet!

This will hopefully be a good experience to have found each other on here. Where are you from? I'm in Indiana. My surgery is a revision from a VBG. .. been having trouble with the ring migrating upward and causing choking, not to mention gaining every bit of the 91 pounds I lost the first time around, plus an extra 9! I'm very worried about failure! ???? Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App
  8. OMG, I hope you read this on time.. first off, Dr Hollis is amazing, he did my lap and 6 years ago.. love the man and his work.. I started having problems with my band, I called his office, let me tell you, the lady Ann, is oh so nice on the phone.. I told her all my complications, she scheduled me to come in.. I thought I was going in for a barium swallow test.. NOPE, I went in, talked to Beth, I told Beth all the same exact things I told Ann, all my symptoms.. so Beth tells me I need to do an EGD test.. and sets up next door at hospital... and they charge me almost $300 for 5 minutes of telling her the same exact thing I told them on phone... so I go do my EGD test, I explain to Dr Hollis, that I have really good insurance and I want to do a revision to the sleeve if possible? He said yes, he does them all the time.. after EGD, he tells me band has slipped and needs to come out... so Ann calls me and tells me with a revision, it's gonna cost me $11,000.. for the sleeve, and insurance should cover most of the band removal.. I was shocked!!! Are u serious $11,000... so I called true results, they are who I went through for band.. they referred me to Dr Snyder at UTI physicians in Bellaire at 6700 w loop .. long story shores I had 2 surgerys , band removal, 3 months later.. sleeve... I had dr Snyder, he is amazing... I'm all healed up, and get this with my insurance, hospital stays.. I paid $1200 out of pocket.... a lot less than $11,000 thru Sr Hollis (I love the man) his staff... NO, not at all... I think they were trying to scam me... good luck though.... PM me for any info needed.. $1200 for both surgerys, and I paid them $300 for 5 min of talking, after I told them same thing on phone... no thank you... go somewhere else... Hollis is amazing... Ann -NOT, Beth-NOT... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    BCBS denied first submission

I wouldnt stress too much. I have BCBS and they denied me twice. I recommend the following to anyone who is denied. Write a letter describing all of the medical issues that are connected to your weight. Write about how they effect your quality of life. Write about family histories of medical issues related to weight. Describe some of your recent attempts (preband for you) at dieting and how they went. Write about the success (weightloss) and failures (port probs, pain etc) of your band. Write about how the revision will help you meet your goals. I am sure the insurance company reps are told to deny the first time on whatever slim issue they can find. They are hoping you will take no for an answer. They also only see your chart. By writing, you show them who you are, why you need this and that you are noting going to take no for an answer. HW 385 SW 359 Sleeved 10/5/16

    1st post op visit....

Congratulations! I just joined this group this evening. My surgery is Monday morning (a revision from a VBG to an RNY). I'm just starting to get nervous! ???? I am in a support group that I go to once a month, but they don't seem very supportive, and I wanted desperately to find something before surgery that would help! This looks like it! !! ???? 11. I was wondering if anyone out there had been diagnosed with fibro before having bypass surgery. I can't find a straight answer from any of my docs and there isn't anyone in my support group or pain group with this particular issue. I'm wondering if this weight loss is going to "cure " my fibro. Not that I wouldn't have done this anyway, I am a revision patient from a VBG/SR back in 1999, having issues with the ring. Just wondering if my horrendous pain might actually go away in the next year? Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App
  12. BCBS wants me to do 6 mos supervised diet before approving band-to-sleeve revision. We are appealing it, of course since I did a nutrition program through work and had 3 sessions with a nutritionist even before my obligatory session with a dietician. Also, there is medical necessity argument for removing band due to gastritis and port pain. Still, this is discouraging. I feel like because I worked hard to lose 80 lbs in the last 3 years and my BMI is now 35, they are going to deny me. Do they want me to regain the weight and become diabetic again? It would be easy to do. My band has had the Fluid removed and I'm so stressed that it would be easy to binge. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  13. I've posted my story in several threads here. Here's a short version written several months ago. To make the long story short(er), I had my sleeve 8/22/2013 & then on 12/29/2015 a revision of the (dilated) sleeve & the single-anastomosis duodenal switch. I also had my hiatal hernia repaired at the second surgery. A hiatal hernia can certainly be a cause of reflux symptoms. Personally, I would not have a gastric bypass. I don't like the artificial opening from the stomach pouch to the intestine. The duodenal switch (classic or SA-DS) has the sleeve gastrectomy that leaves you with a fully-functional stomach, just much smaller. I chose not to have a DS at the time of my original sleeve because the amount of malabsorption scared me. But 2 years later I was still at a BMI of just over 35, on 4 insulin injections a day, Metformin, atorvastatin (Lipitor) & 3 blood pressure meds so I decided something more had to be done. I am now 2½ months post-op & am off all insulin & the atorvastatin. One blood pressure med is discontinued & the other (a combo) is half what it was & I will probably be off of it by the end of the month. We did try decreasing the Metformin, but that didn't work - yet. Now, nearly 10 months post-op, I am off all medications for diabetes, high blood pressure & high cholesterol. As a matter of fact, my PCP has removed those diagnoses from my problem list. This one is a long version & here's another.

    Setbacks

My revision from lapband to gastric bypass on October 11 has come with complications. I went home last Friday at 1, spiked a fever of 102 and was back in the hospital ER at 7pm...it was diagnosed as a pneumonia, and a partially collapsed lung..not to mention I still have surgical pain. I'm still here in the hospital and its Wednesday. I know I'm getting better and stronger everyday, but it's hard being away from my girls even though they come to see me almost everyday. Have any of you had setbacks from surgery that you're still trying to overcome?

  16. I've noticed most people posting here had their band put in during the last five years or so. I had mine done in 2001 and had it removed last October in 2015 after 14 years. My surgeon never advised me that it should come out after ten years, especially with old technology. I had the band removed due to pain in the port area and worries about how long I had it. My total weight loss never exceeded 65 lbs and if was 280 lbs when I had it put in. The side effects of the band was bad acid stomachs(told by the removal surgeon this was normal!) and extreme hunger. The surgeon Mr Sutton who removed my band had a lot of problems taking it out and the operative report makes horrific reading. There was acute inflammation and bad adhesions. The band was eroding into my stomach. Because I have had a band I cannot have the gastric balloon and certain other surgeries. My stomach looks like a patchwork. At my age I would not wear a bikini(I'm 69 now) but if I was younger would consider myself disfigured. Its a total mess. Also after having the band removed I had developed a huge appetite that was out of control.and I think the band irritation had caused an over-secretion of Ghrelin. This is my theory anyway and I had to fight this for 9 months as recently it has subsided. I put on 12 lbs and it could easily have been three times this amount re the extreme hunger all the time. Even after a big meal I was hungry and never felt satisfied. If you have had a success with your band you are fortunate. I wish I had never had it done but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I spent £13000 having the band inserted as there were problems, and over £4000 having it removed. Its a lot of money and having had a recent consultation with a Bariatric surgeon have decided against revision surgery. I'm sure my experience is not unique and the GB has many failures. My advice is look before you leap because I made one hell of a big mistake!!
  17. Hi i wonder if anybody else has experienced this. I had a lap band revision to a sleeve on august 1 2016. I had a leak and had to go back in the hospital. I was put on a feeding tube for a month. Long story short the tube came out on oct 11. So its been a week where i can drink and eat mushy foods. But once they hit my stomach its just aches. Any help as to y would b appreciated. Sent from my SM-G550T1 using the BariatricPal App

Seeking Advice from other LB Vets

I've met other LB vets that had a revision because the band just didn't meet their weight loss expectations. I don't know the mechanics behind *why* it works this way, but I dropped about 80 pounds then just sat there for almost 2 years before a move to a foreign country severely shook up my eating habits and I finally started dropping again - almost 30 pounds in about 9 months. When you do your fills do they remove all the Fluid then put it all back in? Could it be your band is leaking and not maintaining the fill? And, honestly - your surgeon may just be wrong and your band is actually not perfect in every way. So...its really up to what you want...it sounds like your health needs the weight loss to occur to keep the diabetes away and other issues...so if you think a revision will make you healthier where if you stick with the band it may or may not work and might be a lot of stress and frustration...well, then I'd personally go for it.

    External appeal Tricare?

Tricare said I can do an external appeal and are sending me the paperwork to do it. I was in Washington when I got the original surgery done and now in Illinois. My new surgeon has written a letter saying that it was a error and that I will need to have a revision but I still got denied.

WHEN YOUR GOAL IS NOT ENOUGH

Well, I didn't weigh my goal in middle school, so I doubt I'll want or need to go further than that. Even if I don't hit it, I think I'll be okay. After my first WLS (I have LapBand and am revising to RNY) I set my goal to 199. I couldn't even imagine being smaller. I think that was a mistake because I got to 218 and stalled. I didn't push myself to go further because I couldn't see myself even being smaller and convinced myself being healthiER (not healthy) was good enough. Not again. I'm ready to go as far as I can, but at the same time, I won't be upset if I don't get to my prepuberty weight. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App

    Stricture Mid-Stomach

From what I have seen over the years, this is one of the more common shape related issues with the sleeve - with or without a significant stricture, sometimes too much of the stretch fundus is left at the top and/or bottom of the stomach leading to excessive stretch over the long term. Whether it comes from quirks in ones' specific anatomy or surgical technique is anyone's guess for any specific case. As I have had it explained, the cutting tool/stapler that they use is a long, straight tool, with which they need to make remove the greater curvature of the stomach, following the general shape of the minor curvature on the inside - think of cutting a piece of paper or cloth into a circle with a long pair of shears - lots of little cuts rather than a few big ones - which isn't easy via the remote laparoscope, it takes lots of practice. The result with a sleeve if they make just a couple of large cuts instead of 3-4 smaller ones is something shaped more like an hour glass than the banana that it is supposed to resemble. I can understand from a liability perspective that others are shy about correcting the problem. Unfortunately, this is a big problem as those who may be relatively new to the sleeve and are more prone to these issues are in less of a position to correct the problem. Often the recommendation is to revise it to a bypass as that is what they are most familiar with. Other surgeons in the area may also be apprehensive about correcting it as they themselves may be too low on the learning curve to make such repairs. The best shot that I can think of is to find a well experienced sleeve/DS surgeon who may be willing to tackle it - the guys who do the DS as their primary procedure tend to have a lot more than average sleeve experience as the average bariatric surgeon - dsfacts.com has an incomplete listing of DS surgeons, though conveniently there are several good ones in your vicinity. The two most likely guys to check with would be Dr. Roslin in NYC or Dr. Greenbaum in Moorestown are well regarded for doing complex revisions (like putting bypasses back together and revising to DS) so if anyone can in the area can put your sleeve back the way it should be it would be one of them.
  24. Hello I had my surgery done two years ago and meet the requirements through a army hospital. At time of surgery I loss weight and was down to a BMI of 33.8 and I had two co morbidities. Fast forward to today and I need a revision because my sleeved failed( doctors error). Tricare denied me and my appeal because I don't meet the civilian standards from my original surgery. I meet them now though but because at the time of surgery I was under BMI. I am going to do an external appeal because I need a revision. Any help on what I can do or add to my appeal would be great. Also if you had an external appeal with Tricare could you let me know how the process was! Thanks
  25. My insurance paid for the band to sleeve revision. I saw the bills and they totalled about $30,000. I have a relative that went to mexico, just across the border from SanDiego California, and she paid around $5,000. I know my insurance company didn't pay the full amount because they cut deals with each other. I had an out of pocket max of $2,000 and that's what I had to pay. That was 3 years ago for me and I imagine the prices will keep going up.
