So I’ve had mini gastric bypass 2 years ago and I’m finally pregnant. I switched from taking bariatric multivitamins to prenatal vitamins. I need to know if that’s ok and covers all my nutrients and minerals needs? In addition to prenatal vitamins I’m also taking 1200 mg of calcium citrate, 20mg Chelated Zinc, 5mg Folic Acid and once in a week 10,000 IU vitamin D, I would also need to know when should I have my first prenatal visit to the Obgyn? Mine is scheduled at week 6, what do I expect of it other than ultrasound and what what type of vitamin testing should be preformed? Anything else that I need to know.. I am a bit worried and excited

If you are seeking validation to eat items that are not recommended on your diet plan or stage you might not receive that advice here. We are all adults here and diets are advanced after surgery to allow proper healing of the staple line so eating unapproved foods is at your own risk. Either ask for permission to advance your diet from your bariatric team or nutritionist. I wouldn’t seek validation to eat off plan from strangers on the internet. Good Luck.

Three and half weeks out. I have lost 34 lbs and I have currently hit my first plateau. I was advised I am eating to little food and currently light headed. I have no hunger pains.
I see my surgeon on the 11 of august for my two month appointment. I am fortune enough to have Bariatric counseling three days a week and PT twice a week. I am finding this really helps

That's really rapid weight loss, Joe!
I'm curious, is the 3x week counseling and 2x a week PT part of your program's standard plan, or something you decided on for yourself? My program has optional personal trainer sessions you can buy, and counseling sessions you can purchase as you wish to make appts for. You can also buy extra sessions with the NUT. The one "freebie" we have is the monthly support group sessions.

How about Dates?

I found this link. It addresses whole fresh fruit, fruit juices, and dried fruit. https://www.nationalbariatriclink.org/bariatric-blog/eating-fruits-gastric-bypass-surgery/ "After Gastric Bypass Surgery, there will be things you have enjoyed your entire life that your body will no longer be able to digest without discomfort. You will also have to give up some things that may seem healthy such as fruit juices, which are actually high in sugar content. About half of all Bariatric surgery patients can dilute fruit juices such as apple and orange juice and enjoy a glass now and then. Keep a close eye on your goal weight though, as these juices can quickly send you backwards on the scale. Your stomach may not be able to handle dried fruits after Gastric Bypass or other weight loss surgeries, most particularly dried cranberries, apricots and raisins. Again, this is due to the high amounts of sugar used to cure these dried fruits. After some time has passed after your Bariatric surgery, you may be able to indulge in and tolerate dried fruits again but use caution, watching for sudden weight gain." -
Holy Freaking PAIN!!!
GeminiSky replied to Someday's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Being 4 days post op I can tell you its going to be a rough few days until you hit about 4-5th day in. I finally am feeling better on day 4, cant wait for day 5 and forward. Seeing that this is my first surgery I was freaking out a bit, never felt such pain as I have the last few days, however my meds (tylenol codeine) was doing a pretty good job. Even with that said, sore everywhere, couldnt sleep, everything hurts, bruises, etc. Also make sure to get in your water, protein liquids they help immensely. Walking too will help with the gasses. Abdominal binder is a god send, thats a definite must have. This is the one I have, I wear it to sleep also. Even though I couldnt sleep until the 4th day really. It's a huge help wearing it and propping yourself up, elevating. https://www.amazon.com/BraceAbility-Bariatric-Abdominal-Compression-Circumference/dp/B00QLYZ1DK/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1533334829&sr=8-3&keywords=braceability+3x -
Anyone get converted from band to sleeve in one surgery in FL and love their surgeon? Looking for recommendations.

I have a reverse annoyance. My scheduled surgery is 7AM, oh fine and dandy you're thinking , lucky Frustr8, she gets it done and over. Now for the downside, I have to be in Columbus at 5 AM, 50 miles away so a healthy hour trip. I don't own a car, I don't drive, who do I know that wants to show up at 3:30-4 AM to transport my thrilled tushhie to Columbus? People my age tend to go to bed early and sleep in. Well since I have more guts than necessary, at least until the Bariatric surgeon gets through with me, I shall announce my problem at my 55th High School Reunion on August 11th. Taxis are out, local company. does start working until,, 5 Am and Lyft and Uber don't believe in us in my little town.

Choosing between bypass and sleeve
nrbradley0 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had a follow-up appointment with my bariatric surgeon from my EGD and he said that I have the option between roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and lap band. The lap band was a no for me, so I have the option between the other two. What is everyone’s input on each surgery and what made them pick one over the other? Thanks in advance! -
Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
sdcheesehead replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The incision where they took my stomach out of, just above it really hurt. I noticed it getting out of my Jeep. Called the doctor's office, they thought I had pulled a muscle. A week later I went in to see my surgeon and check it out and told me he had place a stitch there and it looks like I tore it, but there were other stiches, so I should be fine. Told me to take Alieve (big no no after bariatric surgery) to help with the pain. Plus I got an abdominal binder. I'm off the Alieve and it seems to be almost healed (doesn't hurt like it did) -
Do any of you use any cookbooks that are Bariatric friendly, or keto friendly?

Feel like I should have lost more weight by now
Born in Missouri replied to Letsgetgoing2018's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
"Plateaus happen, bariatric surgery or no bariatric surgery. Bariatric patients see dramatic weight loss after surgery, with most of the progress coming in the first six months to a year after the procedure. Not all of that decrease is fat. Some of its muscle, and losing muscle, unfortunately, decreases the rate at which you burn energy, in turn slowing fat loss. And, as you lose weight, your body requires less energy to sustain itself. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is going to be a lot different at 250 pounds than it was at 300 or 350. That means slower weight loss, too." 1. Re-commit to tracking your food 2. Change up your exercise routine. 3. Change up your diet. 4. Get enough sleep. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/4-ways-to-beat-a-weight-loss-stall-after-bariatric-surgery/ https://obesitynewstoday.com/reasons-for-not-losing-weight-after-bariatric-surgery/ https://mexicobariatriccenter.com/not-losing-weight-after-gastric-sleeve-surgery/ -
3.5 weeks post op and can’t stomach protein drinks
Frustr8 replied to Letsgetgoing2018's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well it seems it is at Giant Eagle, Vitamin Shoppe, Walgreens . The bad new not a one of them in my town , closest place is 30 miles away. I can get them from Amazon orOnline Wal-Mart but not in my local one. I'm a live shopper not an "onliner". if I was that I would have patronized the Bariatric Pal store before now! -
As others have said, it's normal to feel scared about surgery, but it is a very safe surgery and it would be far more risky to stay obese and risk all the dangerous obesity-related diseases versus having the surgery. Try to let go of your shame. There is a multi-billion dollar diet industry that sells you products and ideas that DO NOT WORK in the long term, and have been shown time and again to fail, but they cause you to blame yourself when they fail. Many of us keep getting fatter the more we try to diet away the weight. Once you become obese the chances of being able to lose the weight and keep it off on your own are tiny, our biology works against us to put the weight back on. The only proven effective way to be able to lose significant amounts of weight and keep it off (provided you put in the work to make the tool work for you) is bariatric surgery.

@Ronnys gal I am sending you wishes for strength, healing and a bright future ahead. You have had more on your plate than 80-90 year olds and I am sure your doctor feels this may be your last best hope. And I will be following the developments as they come. You are part ofourworld-wide Bariatric Pal family and we do worry about our own😦💦😪!

Any suggestions or ideas?
Frustr8 replied to ALEandVSG's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Mostly on top of that I have copies of postings I found especially useful in my journey. Thicks I thought might be able to utilize as times go on. My current program gave me pamphlets which,i have in a folder from Wal-Mart, Preparing for Surgery,Now that your Surgery is Scheduled, Life after Bariatric Surgery and I think, there is one more to come Happy Recovery-Happy Life, probably, will you have reached your weight goal and are transitioning, into Maintainance for,the remainder of your life The first 3 are so fat i,will probably need. to start a separate folder for the last one. I'm sure there are support groups also for post-surgery patients. If they think I will be attending they are deluding, themselves. They seem to have them scheduled in the evening, I live 50 miles see, iwhich means 100 miles round trip, I no longer drive and there is not another soul in my county I can carpool with. Sure I would pay half or the gas but there is just NOBODY! At any, rate my surgery will be September 5th in Columbus Ohio. -
Better tasting chewable vitamin recommendations???
Frustr8 replied to LL44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Flintstone. vitamins isn't their commercial jungle 10,000 strong and growing. Haven't. we grown enough and need to start deminshing? Really that was the "Party Line" on. Bariatric Pal? -
I've been walking about 45 minutes a day starting immediately after surgery. My surgeon has cleared me to get back to the gym and start with weights next week (week 7). My entire bariatric team encourages us to get active ASAP so I wonder if that book is outdated.

How Much Protein?
Diana_in_Philly replied to Swanton_Bomb's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So - I exercise a lot - I fence (en garde) 6 hours a week and spend about another 6 in the gym, including serious weightlifting (I just back squatted 215 pounds and front 165. I can deadlift 190.) I'm working to build muscle and get rid of fat. I'm 2 years post surgery. My goal is about 120 g protein daily. Once you develop a plan, it's not that hard - Breakfast - shake/smoothie - 8 ounces Fairlife skim milk, scoop of protein powder, 2 tablespoons Oikos triple zero vanilla yogurt and 3/4 cup frozen tropical fruit. 270 cal, 38g protein AM Snack - 1 5.3ounce container Oikos triple zero yogurt - 120 calories - 15 grams protein Lunch - 4 ounces of chicken breast chopped and mixed with 1 tablespoon of pesto - 147 calories 29 grams protein plus some salad greens with a little balsamic dressing Afternoon snack - deli ham and cheese roll ups - 4 slices deli ham, four slices deli cheese (provolone) - 17 g, 160 calories So before dinner - I'm at 99 grams -- If I have 5 ounces of fish or shrimp with zucchini noodles done sort of scampi style (32 grams of protein) and I'm at about 1,000 calories. I do add some carbs in because I need them for muscle healing, but I exercise probably 1200 calories a day. FWIW - I'm 57 years old, 5'3" and 155 pounds right now. I haven't had plastics done so I'm carrying about 10 pounds of skin and fat that will only come off when I have plastics. My bariatric team and my medical trainers are all good with what I'm doing. -
Most people are into overkill, lol. There does seem to be some over-emphasis on protein in the bariatric world because early on that is what we need most - we can get by without most vitamins and minerals (pills do good for that, for a while at least), our bodies will make the sugars and carbohydrates that it need (though it may not like it) and we already have all the fat that we need, but protein can't be converted from anything else. There are some "high protein" diets in the weight loss diet world but they are just another alternative to all the other low carb and low fat diets that don't work any better, but some get into them, particularly those who don't like their vegetables, Our needs vary, largely based upon how much lean body mass we have (largely musculature and organs) so that a taller man needs more protein than a shorter woman. Figures, methods and opinions on figuring out how much protein we need vary, but generally fall into the same ballpark. I use a method based upon maintenance of lean mass as being sensible and gives results that fall within most sane guidelines - my 150 or so lb of lean mass needs around 105g per day, as a 5 ft woman (presumably....) your lean mass will likely be around 75-80 lb, so about half of my needs, or a little over 50g - call it 60 to be on the safe side. Most bariatric programs recommend around 60-80g for women and 80-100g for men as a baseline. If one is seriously intent on increasing muscle mass (and most importantly - doing the work to do so - protein needs can go up by 50% or more. Likewise, recovering from major trauma such as major surgery or big time burns can require a 50% or so boost in protein to promote healing. The matter that most bariatric programs are where they are on protein recommendations, and have been there for years, indicates that the surgery that we are undergoing is not all that major from an overall healing or trauma perspective; plastics or reconstruction surgery is much more traumatic to the body and they usually recommend higher protein levels for those.

You look different, did you lose weight?
MissLindseyR replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I work with a ton of surgeons, honestly, they don't say much except for my bariatric surgeon, who I also work with. Now my surgical residents, they do check on me often and ask how I'm doing. But I work more closely with them than the attendings. I think some people might find it uncomfortable to really talk about a person's weight or weightloss. Now my close coworkers, we talk about it all the time haha. -
Weight Gain at Week 3-5- Failing at WLS
MissLindseyR replied to MissLindseyR's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
They gave me the lovenox shots at the hospital, but I did not have to do them at home. I am going to have it checked out via ultrasound today. I'm hoping maybe they can make sure everything is ok with the IUD. I just wanted to make sure my food was up to par and not too much too. I go back to the bariatric doctor on Monday. I was just nervous to not give them a loss. -
I could tell you the intervals former bariatric program had because I still have their booklet lying, around. But my upcoming ones at OSU- kind of strange? I meet August 24 with Anesthesia Resident- this is new one to me. I am allergic to Hibicleanse, tried to express this the day I had my surgery date locked in. I was told to tell anesthesia they would know what else I could use. Hunnnh? And any other times I have had surgery. and I have had 7 as an adult, I met anethesia for a few minutes, if not merely a few seconds before,i went off to La La Land. So whaRF are they doing things this way. IDK- YGGAM, there's some new Bariatric Intials for the

Diet without surgery?
Orchids&Dragons replied to Lisa.H's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Honestly, I don't think anyone should resort to weight-loss surgery unless they have really tried losing without it and been unsuccessful. If you haven't, then definitely give it a try. The statistics say only 5% can lose the weight and maintain, but you may be one of those. However, if you have lost weight many times and regained, research shows that weight-loss surgery is the most successful treatment. There are a great many bariatric diets out there, in addition to Weight Watchers (very balanced), the Mayo Clinic diet and others. If you want to lose without surgery, find one that fits your life and stick to it. Good luck with whatever you choose! -
No Immune system 5 years post Op
GreenTealael replied to AussieLiz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi there, How often do you see your bariatric team and primary doctor? How often do you take antibiotics? There could be a number of things in play but only medical practitioners can diagnosis. You may need pre and probiotics as suggested but also have a look: https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2009/msu-professor-studies-links-between-gastric-bypass-immune-system/ Do your own research, Check in with your physicians and ask them to run more extensive testing. Safe journey! -
Well I had both my cardiac Cath through the radial artery as did Tomkitten( my son) . So much better route than through the femoral artery in the groin. Had good friend who had his done through that route. You have to lay flat with your pressure bandage on so long but the thing he hated even more was ha had a painful lump for so long. Put a hitch in his giddy-up! So glad yours turned out uneventful ---now back to the bariatric surgeon and see what happens next! Maybe back to surgery, and things will get completed?🙏😛
