Some Needed Input On The Mushy Stage

My Mushies Menu consists of Mashed Potatoes with low-fat gravy, cottage cheese, natural applesauce, baby foods, scrambled eggs, hot cereals, refried Beans & tuna and along with those I continue to include the Soups and yogurt. Thank goodness for the soup and yogurt, it made the full liquids very bearable and was not bad at all. Today was my first day for the Mushies and couldn't wait to wake up this morning to have some Eggs! dinner I was satisfied with the potatoes and gravy. I would also love any suggestions to add to this phase. Not sure about the rest of you, but after one week of pureed foods I move on to Soft foods for a week. Not quite sure what the difference is yet between the two. I'll meet with the Dietician on Monday to review.

    JUNE 2009 Lap Band Surgery

Wow! Gemini, I could have written your post! I too have lost 90 lbs and am very pleased with my results so far. The last month's weight loss, though, has been very slow fro me also. I too have had a lot of stuck and painful sliming attacks (every day at least one or more meals a day for about a month!). I keep thinking I've just eaten too fast, didn't chew enough, was holding water, hadn't drank enough water, had food that was too hot/cold/spicy...etc! I was just fine and then all of a sudden--just like you said--I can't seem to eat anything except yogurt, pudding, or soup. I actually can't take it anymore. I have an appointment to have a slight unfill this coming Monday. If I were you, I wouldn't get that fill you have scheduled; I can't imagine you'll be happy with it. If my doctor has any good insights into why everything was fine until about a month ago, I'll let you know. I'm so looking forward to being able to eat again without wondering whether or not what I ate will be staying down...
  3. Thanks to all of the replies! I know, I do hate to complain, as I know I could have it worse by not getting any dinner. But really I appreciate all the feedback...these are good tips, I should look in to some different flavors I can add or crystal lite, etc. Good idea!! This morning I weighed and lost 3lbs the first day, so that helped motivate me a bit. But today was kinda more of the same...once I get to dinner, I'm fine and feel much better...but have just been so fatigued and weak during the day until that point. I did however realize today that I have the option to blend my shakes with nonfat yogurt or skim milk (i was just using water!) and that has kinda changed my life...I just had one with nonfat raspberry yogurt this evening, and it was so delicious! And I also realized I can mix up when I have what...so I'm thinking I might do a fruit in the afternoon, and save the third shake until the end of the day. Thanks again for all of the support!
  4. Hi, im 12 days post op...tried onion broth with a bit of melted mozzerella and went through 1 hour of deadly reflux and i threw up a few times..I guess everyone goes through it. I was just wondering if i could eat watermelon or yogurt? Im a bit scared of yogurn from that mozzerrella reaction..I would really appreciate it if i heard what people were eating around this time...if anything?? Thanks for the help

  6. I have a desk job so it was easier for me to return on Monday (after a previous Thursday surgery) than if I had a physically active job. The difficulty was that my job requires me to *think* -- novel concept, I know! It was difficult to concentrate on tasks while taking prescription pain meds. In my case, I was on Percocet, and thus difficult to actually work! I left each day around 4:30 (I usually work 9 - 6), and went home and took a nap. I made sure we didn't have any social event or after-work stuff to attend to -- I think that helped as well. As soon as I shifted off of Percocet (day 7) and on to Extra Strength *Liquid* Tylenol, that made all the difference! I was alert and able to focus at work. Liquid Tylenol is great. Drink lots of Water with it. I also had chicken broth with me and drinkable yogurt.
  7. I haven't posted in awhile because I have been so disappointed in myself & my journey so far. I have seen other people post about struggling & have seen a lot of people criticize them. I don't need that right now as I am already hating myself. I thought that I was prepared for this journey, but the reality has hit me hard. I had a large part of my stomach removed & I am never getting it back. I will never be able to eat the way I used to again. This should be a good thing, right? The first couple of weeks were the easy part. I went down 31 lbs. in the first 2 weeks & that is exactly where I have stayed. I am still 381 today. This is not a stall. I did have a stall during week 3 where I was completely on plan, but not losing anything. I actually gained. Then the small amount I gained came off & I haven't moved at all now for 2 weeks. This is completely my fault. I haven't been exercising. I haven't started my vitamins. I don't get in all my water every day. I don't follow my nutritionists guidelines. So, I am obviously not expecting that I would have gone down anymore. I have read so much on this board about people not being able to tolerate foods, sliming or vomiting. I know that is difficult for those people & I am not wishing that I would be sick. It's just that I have been able to tolerate anything & everything that I have tried. My offices food guidelines are very strict & I have not kept to them. According to my nutritionist my diet should be Breakfast: 1 protein shake, Lunch: 1 protein shake, Dinner 3 oz. of protein, 3 oz. of vegetable & 3 oz. of salad, Snack (if needed) 1/2 a piece of fruit or 1% cottage cheese. Period. No drinking milk (not even in tea, coffee or protein shakes) though I am allowed cheese & yogurt & no carbs except what naturally occurs in the aforementioned dietary outline. I need to total 60-70 grams of protein a day, less than 20 grams of carbs per day & at least 64 oz. of water per day along with my vitamins & exercise. I do not know what is holding me back from following the program except my own mind maybe. I want to be able to treat myself. I want to enjoy my food. So, that is what I have been doing. I have been having flavored lattes multiple times per week over the past two weeks. Today I spent over 4 hours getting 10 chicken nuggets & a large mocha frappe into my stomach. I had nothing before & I know that I won't have anything until tomorrow. I have also been allowing myself 2 cigarettes a day. I am sharing all this for different reasons. One reason is there might be others going through the same thing & I want them to know that they are not alone. Another reason is that I need massive encouragement. Before anyone suggests professional help, I have already set that up. I am seeing my nutritionist again in 2 weeks instead of 4 because she knows that I am struggling. My surgeon's office also has a psychiatrist on staff that deals specifically with bariatric patients pre and post-op & I have set up an appointment with her. For years I have lost & regained the same 30 lbs. over & over again. I have not been below 380 in about 3 years now. I knew that getting sleeved wasn't going to "cure" my obesity. I just thought that I would have a longer period of time before I would be able to tolerate different foods & that I could resolve any other issues before then. I am feeling so sad & just beating up on myself. Yet, I keep giving myself a reason to beat up on myself every day. Every day this goes on the worse that I feel about myself. This should be incentive enough to stop, but I haven't. I have so many reasons to treat my body well and I am not. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this or know anyone else who has? Do you see something that I don't? Any words of encouragement? Any hope for me?+31

Thanks BooCakes! I am pretty sore today, and sitting in the car for 6 hours on the drive home did not help. I need to walk around some more to get rid of the gas pains. Other than that, all is good! Not too hungry, probably had about 500 cals total of soup & yogurt & protein shake today. Much better than all that broth! You will be on the banded side soon! :blushing:
  10. Hey, BariatricPal Members! It’s hard to believe that we’re already through January and into February! We hope that so far in 2014, you have been achieving your goals in weight loss and in life. BariatricPal is the best place for weight loss surgery support, so we hope you’ve been visiting frequently. If not, come on back and join the conversations! Before you do, take a look at this month’s newsletter. You’ll find: Member Poll: How Do You Beat the Cold? Member Spotlight: Meet Joanna! BariatricPal Social Media – Stay Connected! Surviving Super Bowl Sunday After Weight Loss Surgery Enjoy the newsletter, and then talk about it – and whatever else is on your mind – at BariatricPal. There’s always plenty going on there to take your mind off of the winter weather and to motivate you to stay on track with your weight loss. See you on the boards! Sincerely, Alex Brecher Founder, BariatricPal Member Poll: How Do You Beat the Cold? This year has seen record-setting freezes and winter storms throughout much of the country, and the cold weather will stick around for a few more weeks. Whether you are a New Yorker who has seen temps dip below 0 degree Fahrenheit or a Californian who shivers when it is below 50 degrees, what do you do to keep warm? Exercise more. It gets my metabolism going and keeps me warm for hours. Plus, I burn extra calories! Drink some hot coffee or tea to warm up my insides. Plus, since my weight loss surgery diet doesn’t let me eat solid foods when I drink liquids, drinking coffee or tea keeps me from turning to food to warm me up. Turn up the heat or start a fire in the fireplace, pile on the blankets, and distract myself from the cold by reading, knitting, using the computer or talking on the phone. Nothing in particular, but I need help! Since weight loss surgery, I have been less able to tolerate cold than I used to be. I hate to admit it, but the only thing that warms me up is some good old comfort food…macaroni and cheese or freshly baked Cookies. Luckily, I can’t tolerate much after weight loss surgery! Other (tell us!). Click on this link so you can select your answer and give us more details in the forums! Member Spotlight – Meet Joanna! We are thrilled that our first member spotlight of the year is on Joanna. Joanna knew she was overweight, but the deciding factor in getting surgery was when she had to get off of a roller coaster because she could not fit into the seat! She is a gastric bypass patient who got her surgery done in June of 2012. Her health insurance approved the procedure, and her hospital stay was two days. At a height of 5’7”, Joanna weighed 289 pounds and had a BMI of 45. Since losing 73 pounds, she has achieved a BMI of 33, and is about halfway to her goal weigh of 150 pounds. The journey has been hard, but she has no regrets and would do it again. She says that the drawbacks are that she has low Iron and Vitamin B12 levels, and she does not like constantly being on medications. On the other hand, she recommends the gastric bypass to anyone who needs it because it could save your life. She watches everything she eats to make sure she loses weight. Joanna says she chooses fat-free and no sugar-added choices whenever possible. She tries to avoid junk food. And her favorite snack? Greek yogurt with fruit. Great choice! It’s high in Protein, low in fat, and high in dietary Fiber. You know what you’re doing, Joanna! Thank you, Joanna, for being in our spotlight! All the best to you as you continue on your journey, and thanks for sharing it with BariatricPal. We also want to mention that Joanna welcomes questions from other BariatricPal members! Our member spotlights feature BariatricPal members who have gotten any type of weight loss surgery. This is to help promote BariatricPal’s mission of providing a unified front for all types of weight loss surgery. We can all learn from each other, regardless of where you are in your weight loss journey or what type of surgery you have or are considering. Are you interested in being in our member spotlight? Surviving Super Bowl Sunday After Weight Loss Surgery Super Bowl Sunday is Sunday, February 2. Even people who do consider themselves diehard football fans tune in to the big game. If you are one of the 150 million people who are expected to watch this Sunday’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, chances are that you have to face the food that comes with a Super Bowl party. chips and dip, jalapeno poppers, chicken wings, snack mixes, pizza and cupcakes just aren’t for you anymore after weight loss surgery. They are not only high-calorie, but they can give gastric bypass and sleeve patients dumping syndrome or cause obstructions or blockages for lap-band patients. You can still enjoy good food at your Super Bowl party, though. Just plan ahead, and use these strategies to help you. Be Sure There is Something You Can Eat If there is no food available that you should eat, you will probably end up eating something that you should not eat. Make sure that there is some food available that is part of your weight loss diet. You can prepare enough only for yourself, or you can prepare one or more larger dishes or platters that everyone can share. Easy Snacks for yourself include hard-boiled eggs, mixed nuts or peanuts (small serving size!), low-fat string cheese and beef Jerky. If you prefer to bring a dish for everyone, try a vegetable platter with hummus or dip made with Greek yogurt, or a large Greek salad with lettuce, tomatoes, olives, feta cheese, and chicken breast. Everyone will appreciate your contribution, and you will have healthy food to munch on during the game. These are some other ideas for snacks. Stuffed mushrooms with extra lean ground turkey, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese Grilled chicken breast on skewers with roasted zucchini Meatballs with ground turkey and Italian seasoning Egg, spinach and ham bites baked in muffin cups Apple slices with Peanut Butter Cheese platter with grapes and nuts Pace Yourself A football game can last three or more hours. You will feel sick if you eat constantly during this time, even if you are eating healthy foods. Unfortunately, food will probably be offered the whole time. Your best bet is to pace yourself with a few snacks that fit into your weight loss surgery diet. For example, you could plan to have one small snack during each quarter of the game. That works out to about one snack per 45 or 60 minutes. Take a break during half-time to focus on the show and the commercials, and drink some Water. Move Like an Athlete Get some exercise in the morning or early afternoon before the game-starting coin toss. If you live somewhere with good enough weather, go for a brisk walk outdoors. If the weather is too extreme, go to the gym or do a short workout with hand weights at home. During the game, use the commercials as opportunities to get some light exercise. You don’t have to skip the famous advertisements; just be sure to move during them. When you keep moving during the game, you will be reminding yourself that you are working hard to lose weight. That gives you extra motivation to eat well! Do you have any other strategies for surviving Super Bowl Sunday? Talk about them at BariatricPal so that all of us can benefit, and let us know what you think about our tips. Enjoy the game! That is about it for this month’s newsletter. We hope you found it inspirational and informative, and we look forward to seeing you on the boards! Remember; feel free to contact us at any time with feedback, questions, and suggestions. Our members keep us going, and we love hearing from you! Take care of yourselves and each other.

    Frozen dinner question

I agree that most of those meals are carb heavy and full of sodium and preservatives. For me it is fairly easy to pick a Protein and then add a vegetable it fruit. (For instance, turkey breast and green Beans or roasted Brussels sprouts or similar; cottage cheese with fresh tomato; Greek yogurt with fresh berries; chicken patty and a green vegetable; etc.) It tastes so much better than frozen meals anyway and is really easy..

    No one in Nov?

Longhorn, I'm taking 9 days off my teaching job. I will work at the computer from home. I do translations. If I don't work or do something productive... I'll get depressed. I went to the grocery store to check out all the yogurts, puddings, drinks etc. I'm so excited.

    September 2009 Band Date

Congratulations Christie! I was banded on 9/1 also. My gas pain is all in my chest too. Walking helps. Every time I walk, I cough - which hurts the belly but I guess that means progress. Full liquids is good, way better than clear, but I can't seem to find anything I am interested in. The cream of chicken Soup was good...all the Protein shakes taste way too sweet. What else is there? Yogurt I guess. We are allowed to have cottage cheese too, I could try that. Not much of an appetite.
  14. Okay, I ran to Publix and picked up some healthy stuff. I purchased avocados, pears, cracker barrel individually wrapped sharp cheddar chunks, Planters South Beach Diet Mix of macadamian nuts, almonds, and cashews with sea salt, some low carb/high Protein wraps, 4 1cup individual servings of a new greek yogurt with fruit(pineapple and strawberry), baked pita chips, hummus dip, dreamfield's elbow noodles, cheesy whole wheat tortelini, I also picked up some South Beach Peanut Butter Protein Bars, some Silk soy milk. No Mootopia here. I also picked up some Weight Watcher meals. I'll only be able to eat 1/2 of one per meal, but I figure I can save the rest for later in the day. Today, I've already eaten 3 times, every 3 hours since 9am. I had 3/4 cup of Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal with 1/2 of 1% milk. The bottom half of a Lender's Blueberry bagel, toasted with a dab of butter. (That really didn't feel all that great once I ate it so probably won't do it again) Then at 2:45ish, I hate 6 almonds, 4 macadamia nuts, and 1 of the sharp cheddar chunks. I am stuffed. Tonight, I'm making it leftover night for the guys, and I plan on having part of WW meal for dinner. I'll try my best to get in more nuts and some cheese before bed, but I really don't want to push it. All of that is only 533 calories. So, here's to tonight, slow and steady dinner with a snack. I'll eat dinner about 6, then try to have a snack around 9pm.

My favorite is this - Lemon sole. Juice of one lemon; 1/2 tbsp of butter - cook in a pan. Mash it up. Another one but this is high calorie and believe it or not my doc's office suggest it (or maybe it is high cal compared to what I have been used to eating). Noodleless lasagna - skim ricotta; skim mozzarella and marinara sauce microwaved or baked. I try to keep that at the minimum though. Good ole tuna w/ light mayo Greek 0% yogurt with blended fruit or i do use a bit of honey.

OTR! How do i ingest the chia seeds?

I like the juice of half a lime, 12 ounces of Water, a bit of stevia and a table spoon of chia seeds. I let it sit for about 20 minutes and YUMMMMMMMMY I'm pre-sleeve so I know that the lime is out of the picture for a few months post-op.. does anyone know when you can start incorporated hydrated chia seeds? I was reading some MU paperwork that I think they said 3 months before adding seeds... but I don't know that hydrated chia seeds really count as seeds since they're kinda, goopy? Also another way to eat them, is to pre-make them into a gel by adding to waterand store the gel in your fridge, then just incorporate into whatever you want. That way there's no waiting for the seeds to hydrate. Some people do it this way if they like to use in yogurt or apple sauce.
  17. You should definitely consult your doctor on his/her plan for your first couple of weeks. I know that some doctors do only clear liquids the first two weeks, and then "full liquids" the second two. My doctor, on the other hand, does anything liquid during the first two weeks, as long as it is the consistency to be sipped through a straw (BUT DON'T USE A STRAW - TO MUCH AIR/GAS). Of course, protein needs to be FIRST PRIORITY. I have been doing lentil soup put through the blender, and fat-free greek yogurt. I have also been doing drinks that I ordered through American Bariatric - both their clear fruit drinks (a little like Crystal Light), and their cappucino mix (delicious - I mix it with warm coffee - 15 grams of protein and 90 calories!).
  18. Greek yogurt...decaf coffee...oatmeal...scrambled eggs w turkey bacon...McGreenie ( egg white on toast w cheese n ham).
  19. These last 3 days have been the toughest by far. I eat yogurt for breakfast and it's still sitting in my chest like a blockage with bubbles and belches and I just relieved myself of about have of it. Should I be worried that I have a blockage? Sipping tea and it's not going down.

That almost DOES sound good! Probably much more appealing if I were only able to eat yogurt and cottage cheese, though
  21. MeganA

    I think he likes me....

Before banding...no way. After banding...if we just move the milk, the yogurt, and the cottage cheese there would be plenty of room :-) Hee hee. Good one Jack Megan
  22. It's getting better everyday! I had a full nights rest and found getting up out of bed less painful...might even venture out a little today. I will definitely look into MyFitnessPal as soon as I post this...been hearing and reading quite a bit about it. Any help is a step in the right direction. This girl is looking forward to some greek yogurt. Ha I am excited we are close in surgery dates too! Karen, my name is Carol.

Okay I'm back home surgery went pretty well they ended up taking my gallbladder because I found a small polyp in it. Painless pretty intense the first day at the surgery and then it hit its peak at 3 a.m. I guess technically the morning after the surgery it was really bad. I had severe shortness of breath and my heart was all over the place so they ended up ordering at CAT scan of my chest and ultrasounds of my legs to look for blood clots and then an upper GI to make sure everything was in order. I'm glad to say that all of those tests came back normal and my shortness of breath is still here but obviously getting much better. They kept me in hospital for 2 days technically three because I wasn't released until 8 last night. The nurses were phenomenal at my hospital I felt very good and taking care of I walked a grand total of 50 laps around the nurses station and every time I went at least one nurse and look at how good your doing. When they release me my heart was still a little bit all over the place but the doctor felt confident that I'd be okay going home. So here I am I got up this morning and did walk the length of my house 8 times I had my first breakfast which was super runny yogurt took my Prilosec and crushed at my potassium and hid it in the yogurt. I also got to take the bandages off today and take a nice warm shower that I'm very tired after all the activity and will be in bed for the next hour to hour and a half. How did everybody else do you had surgery on the 9th 10th or 11th

I can have Greek yogurt & cottage cheese next week. As well as fruit or veggie smoothies [emoji4] Never thought I’d be so excited about yogurt lmao

    Yogurt...

LOL I'm hugely picky as well. I'm fine with the nonfat yogurts, but this sugar-free stuff is 🤢 I just am not sure I should be eating the kind with actual sugar. I'll talk to the dietician.
